I N T R O D U C T I O N
It took quite some time to decide on writing this report up, perhaps time too long that the decision was made well after the trip itself, and with not even half the stock of photos and notes, as I normally would have to populate my typical production. Will I do a TR? Will it be on a.net, or should I just dump the pictures on Facebook? I just could not decide!

While a 30-minute flight can be a tad difficult to document, one on an Air Mauritius A340 is too tempting to ignore. And so, today I bring you something that will probably be a little different to what you would normally expect out of me.

For starters, I think it is unfair to post a book-long introduction on Air Mauritius and it’s recent issues and goings on, when I only caught a brief glimpse of the experience. So instead, this report will be more concise and will give you an insight to the overall trip, which will show you things we don’t always see around here.

WELCOME TO MY 31st TRIP REPORT
This TR will cover my flight on Air Mauritius from MRU to RUN in Economy Class on the A340-300.



B A C K G R O U N D
As seen in my previous report, the idea of finding myself in Mauritius was far from the typical touristy norm that one would expect. Well, what other reason can it be apart from one that relates to a self-connection to a flight to God knows where?

In any case, I would not be lurking the depths of the Indian Ocean had it not been for the sole purpose to get myself to Réunion and catch my long awaited Air Austral flight to New Caledonia. For those of us who have not seen that TR, please feel free to take a look right here:

I had no plans to overnight in Mauritius, as I had that on the agenda for Réunion. As such, my options were more or less limited to nonstops on either Air Austral or Air Mauritius, both of which seem to offer competing shuttle services between the two islands.

While Air Austral was a flight-to-be tomorrow, why not give Air Mauritius a tick off my list today? And so, a visit to the Air Mauritius website was all that was required to get this sorted out.

The airline’s website –while looking rather basic- does offer just the right features that one would expect in order to facilitate today’s techno-needs. Apart from the company’s usual background info, which seems fairly updated, the Air Mauritius website also features an extensive online booking system that allows you to purchase your ticket, select seats and meals, and check-in for your flight online.

Given all that, my ticket was issued with a fair bit of ease, albeit the website did seem to hang up on me a few times. Of course, the choice for today’s flight was definitely Economy Class, as Business Class for a 30-minute flight would be a tad OTT don’t you think?

Ticket in hand, and Air Austral on the horizon, it was time to go. Air Mauritius here I come!



D E P A R T U R E
Today’s journey had commenced in Dubai, and on an itinerary that had already began to exhaust my energy upon arriving at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius. However, a fully decked out Emirates B777-300ER featuring private suites in First Class, lie-flat seats in Business Class, and New Generation Economy Class seats was a serious way to get to a leisurely destination such as Mauritius. So who’s to say that even my seat in cattle class was not comfortable?

Upon arrival at MRU at 9:30am, I proceeded to the transfer desk that is located right before the immigration counters that all other 300+ deplaning passengers that were on my flight had proceeded towards. The friendly Air Mauritius branded agents took to my request immediately, and upon the usual passport and document checks, my boarding pass for my 15:10 MK292 flight was issued in no time.

Adjacent to the transfer desk was a security checkpoint that I had to go through before arriving at the airport’s single –and very humble- airside terminal building which very much follows a similar concept to that of its neighbor in Réunion. However, before exploring my immediate surroundings, a visit to one of the airport’s premium lounges was on my agenda.

Does Air Mauritius offer lounge access to its Economy Class passengers? Of course not! But as a Priority Pass member, I am allowed lounge access to many worldwide airport lounges, and in the case of Mauritius, this will be the ‘Amedee Maingard’ Lounge.

Located towards a far end of the terminal building, the lounge is in a hidden location far away from the main terminal bustle. A professional agent welcomes me inside after checking my membership validity and boarding pass.

Dim and tranquil, the lounge instantly put me into a feeling of absolute Zhen. The ambience was rather soothing, and the peaceful sounds of the running water from the central fountain could have easily put me right to sleep. It almost felt like I was in the waiting room of a mid-range spa, but I did not mind especially as I was the only person using the lounge at that time.

With ultra-basic amenities, the lounge does not offer much apart from finger foods and some beverages, a couple of outdated computers, a flat-screen television, and inadequate seating. It is definitely not a lounge designed for long waiting times, but there was something about the vibe that was rather seductive; I did not mind hanging around here for a few more moments.

I had figured I could grab a bite to eat at the lounge, but the small selection between mini-quiches, pesto sandwiches, and sliced cheese was not too interesting. So after checking my emails and taking the necessary pictures, it was time to move to the main terminal area.

As with Réunion’s airport, this Mauritian terminal is small and consists of one hallway that houses three gates, ample seating, a reasonable amount of duty free and souvenir-type offerings, one F&B outlet, and two premium lounges.

Gate assignments at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport follow a similar etiquette as the likes of London’s airports whereby gates are ‘published’ on the FIDS relatively closer to the scheduled time of any given flight. As such, at 2:05pm, Gate 2 had been allocated to my flight.

At 2:30pm, a general boarding announcement was called, and everyone instantly responded by queuing in front of the podium.

Handing my boarding pass to an Air Mauritius ground staff, I was wished a friendly ‘enjoy your flight’ as soon as the boarding card reader’s beep signaled that I was legal to board. And off I go!

At Door 2L of the aircraft, I am met with what seemed to be the purser on today’s flight. She smiles as she greets the enplaning passengers, but there isn’t much more to be expected beyond this on today’s short island hopper service. Simple and to the point, so let’s all just relax, shall we?


“Hi, welcome on board! This way ..”



By 2:35pm, I was on board.

Welcome to Air Mauritius





Making my way through, several crew members were spread across the cabin, some standing fully upright with a faint smile, while others leaning casually on the seatbacks watching the boarding bustle go by. It was definitely a more casual affair today.

The cabin interior on the Air Mauritius A340 is quite unique. The bright green Economy Class seats are too hard to miss; in fact, the color is too powerful for a cabin’s interior in my opinion, yet I somehow cannot look away. Overall however, for a 13 year old plane, the condition of its interior was not all that bad.

At my seat at 28A, I discovered that it was an exit row seat; a type that I am not that overly fond of. While such a seat certainly boasts better legroom that the norm, I much prefer a standard seat only because it simply is the standard offering that I would prefer to experience. Nevertheless, the seat was comfortable, and the situation was more than satisfactory for this short flight.

As the cabin crew was conducting a final headcount, the seatbelt sign was switched on and this was followed by an announcement by our South African captain to welcome everyone on board. He advised us the necessary details of our short routing to Réunion today, and that today’s flight would take only 30 minutes.

The safety video was then played on the overhead screens, and right after all the aircraft doors were closed and crosschecked by the crew.



We pushed back at 3pm





Parakeet’s hairdryers slowly hummed a humble blow as we pushed back into the Apron, and eventually we began our short taxi to the runway. Passing several other company A340’s and A330’s, we also taxied by the Emirates 77W that dumped me here, parked on a remote stand awaiting its night flight back to hub DXB.

We arrived at the runway, and then began our ground-hugging trek before lifting off at 3:10pm. Even with such a short flight and light load today,
this lazy bird just was not in the mood to get up and go! Don’t you just love that?

And off to St. Denis we go







Several seconds after lifting off, the captain signaled with the seatbelt sign for the crew to be released to conduct a quick service. From my previous experience on tag-on flights between Dubai and Abu Dhabi (back in the day when many airlines used to tag these two together), there did not seem to be any time for anything, yet the crew on today’s flight managed to appear in the aisles with trays of Apple Juice cups for everyone. Not bad at all I think!

And in no time, the seatbelt sign was switched back on signaling that we had begun our initial descent towards Roland Garros International Airport. The flight was too short for the crew to conduct a full service –even with today’s 50% loads- so everything had to come to an abrupt end in time for landing.

A R R I V A L
As seen in the video above, it almost felt like we were going to land on water. There was not a slab of concrete in sight only until the very last moments when something suddenly appeared in time for Parakeet to drop on. At 3:45pm, we touched down at St. Denis Airport hence, bringing this short hop to an abrupt end.

Upon exiting the aircraft, we entered into the terminal building and directly arrived at two immigration desks that seemed to be the only allocation for the entire arrivals area at the airport. There was a little bit of congestion even though our flight was barely half full, so I wouldn’t want to imagine what it would be like when a Corsairfly B744 dumps its load around here!

Nevertheless, the immigration officer that took to my odd passport out of the gazillion other French ones was super nice and helpful. He did question whether I had an onward booking beyond Réunion and did not seem surprised when I flashed my Air Austral itinerary in front him. “Ah Oui! … Welcome sir!”



C O N C L U S I O N
Again, I think it would be unfair to project some criticism on Air Mauritius with such a brief encounter, but the overall experience was more than satisfactory as it got me from A to B on time, and with my luggage.

As for my travels through Mauritius, the airport was small and basic, but with just the right amenities for a typical traveler. While it is far more outdated than its French neighbor, both airports seemed quite similar in their design and operation; boutique and functional, they seem to get the job done!

SAINT-DENIS DE LA RÉUNION
I had less than 24 hours in Réunion, and since I had arrived close to the end of the day, I had very little time to explore the city after checking in to the hotel. However, the receptionist at the hotel lobby was so helpful to suggest that I could at least pay a visit to the city’s downtown area, Ville de Saint-Denis, which really is not much apart from small basic shops and restaurants.

From my brief experience, I found the city to be quite charming and humble, and its people seemed kind and very simple. It seemed much more pleasant than Nouméa and I definitely would want to return for a more thorough visit.

Very odd seat color, never seen anything similar. Almost as bright as your shoe laces...

Few peoples can make a great report from a 30 minute flight, did enjoy reading it very much.
ST-DENIS looks like a great place for a quiet relaxing vacation. Did you notice any nice beaches?
A hamburger meal for $10 is really expensive, do the locals go there?

Heya Roni,

Been excited about this TR ever since I heard it from you during our meeting at DXB. It's a very nicely written TR with all the details covered! True enough, a 30 minute flight is hard to document due to the limited time but nevertheless a very good documentation of the Airbus A340-300 on a short flight! Surprised to see that it has a ground hugging climb even on a light load. Looking forward to your next TR! (And this is another title to add to my already diverse memory of your TR titles  )

Hi Roni, as usual very interesting TR with many highquality pictures.
Air Mauritius is not covered well in this section and i fully enjoyed reading it  
I always like doing such short runs on long haul birds.
Do you know how many times they use the A343 on this route?
The pictures of La reunion also look very good, and it should be a nice holiday destination.

Every time I see pictures of Mauritius, Reunion, Seychelles and Comoros area, I am reminded how unbelievably beautiful that area is - most beautiful in Africa, and perhaps the world. Nice trip report

Interesting point as I have recently completed several trips from Hurghada to Sharm El Sheik, a mere 22 minute flight, and everyone got offered a juice or water, why therefore do many North American carriers claim that flights of less than an hour do not give them time to do a beverage run?

Glad you posted this . I actually love the interior looks wacky   Always wondered what they were like never flown on them.
Arnt their other cabin interiors Orange or something? Maybe Im confused with some other airline.

Exceptional trip report! I'm glad this report got a write-up, despite the length of the flight. I'm extremely surprised a drink run was even possible on a flight this short and on an aircraft the size of an A343 (regardless of the load factor). I'm a desensitized American domestic flyer.

Excellent Report as always whether the TR is big or small. It's always nice to get a widebody on such a short sector especially on a not very well-known airline like Air Mauritius.

It seemed like MU offers a nice product on these short hops and it's good to see that they managed to offer you something on the flight.

La Reunion looks like a very nice place to spend a few days relaxing. Hopefully I'll be able to spend some time there in the future.

Totally, my encounter with the A343s were on GF, EK, CX and I feel the same.

Nice to see some juice on the short hop, there isn't time to offer much more. Can you imagine when the flight would be totally packed?!

St. Denis seems to have its charm, and i would love to go back there ... and actually stay a while  

I could not get to a beach as the sun was setting, and apparently, Reunion is a sleepy little town that winds down very early  

As for the prices, i guess they are typical European prices, but still not as manic as New Caledonia! In the restaurant where i had my dinner, it seemed like a few locals where having a meal there.

Yeah really, that thing is just so sluggish. I absolutely love the slow climb of a fully loaded A340. It feels like the never ending takeoff!

It seems that the A340 (and the A330) are doing daily runs on this sector. The A330 was doing an earlier flight on that day, which i could have easily taken in order to spend more time at Reunion. However, give me an A340 any time!

According to their website there are a couple of A340's that feature the older generation product, which are not officially deployed on long-haul routes. I think these birds have the orange interior.

They were definitely of the usual standard, and all of which were quite satisfactory. No complains from my end

The Comoros is beautiful physically, but not much more than that. Add to that the (relative) instability compared to the other island nations, questionable food/drink safety standards, high population density and the like...I went to the Comoros once but really have no need to go back. I will choose Mauritius, Reunion and Seychelles any day.

Mayotte - never been, sorry mate. Physically I must imagine it is like the Comoros, since they are so close, but with a much more stable government and way of life, being an overseas territory of France and all.

Madagascar - completely different. I felt like Madagascar was more akin to continental Africa rather than the Indian Ocean resort Africa. Sure, there are some beautiful places and beautiful ocean settings, but it is also quite a large island and most of the country is inland, and in that way it doesn't feel much different than places like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and even South Africa (inland areas, of course). The capital, Antananarivo, isn't even on the water - it is about as center of the country as you can get.

If you are looking for beautiful, tropical resorts...still, Mauritius, Reunion and Seychelles are the best. I am particularly keen on the Seychelles myself, but they are all great.
