Boston To New Orleans On AA

On Friday, 11/17, my friend Jeff dropped me off at Logan at 2:00pm for my 4:05pm American Airlines flight to Dallas/Ft. Worth. I checked in after waiting in line for just 10 minutes, the I proceeded to walk to thegate area. After passing through secirity, I stoped at the Burger King and grabbed a bite to eat, then I visited one of BOS's many gift stores. The time then was around 2:45, so I walked to gate B27 to wait for my Boeing 757 to arriveat the gate. I saw lots of cool aircraft at BOS....Aer Lingus A330-300, Swissair A330-200, Air France B767-300, Lufthansa B747-200, lots of big AA and DL planes, and a pleathera of FedEx DC10's.Very impressive airport. An AA A300 parked at the gate next to my plane, bound for LHR. We boarded on-time at 3:30pm. I had windown seat 30F, behind the wing, just how I like it. After taxiing for about 15 min., we were airborne at 4:20pm. Takeoff was very steep, and we climbed right over downtown BOS, which right at the end of one of the runways.Very scenic. Our 4h5m flight took us over IND, STL, Ft. Smith, and then DFW. They showed "The Perfect Storm", which is a simply great movie. Dinner consisted of Barbecued Chicken with green peas, potatoes, salad, a roll, and a brownie. Not too bad. I got served 3 Diet Sprites.The flight was very relaxing with the expanded legroom. We arrived at the gate in DFW at 7:50pm.
After killing an hour in the lovely DFW Terminal C, I boarded flight 1927, the 8:55pm departure from DFW to MSY. Aicraft: B727-200. I had seat 19F, another window, right over the right wing. Flight was totally full...not a seat left. We got airborne at 9:20pm, after taxiing past an AA MD-11 for for somewhere in South America I believe. I love the takeoff on the 72S....we used up a whole lot of runway, and it took us awhile to climb to altitude. I love it! Flight was fairly smooth(until arrival in MSY), and we were served a choice of beverages at 29,000 feet. I must say, offering a full bev. selection on a :55 flight is very impressive....Delta only offers 3 drinks on its 1-hour ATL-MSY flights...kinda cheap. Anyway, it was raining in MSY all day, so on our initial descent, I saw the rain come down. It came down pretty hard, but the flight was smooth. We touched down to the East, after descending over the swamps and marshes just to the west of the field. The captain stuck the landing cause the runway was wet. Great flight. As I walked off, I told the pilot "I love this plane, I'll miss them when they are gone." He smiled and replied "So will I...pleasure to fly...only 2 years left." As I walked down the long Concourse C to meet my dad past the security checkpoint, I noticed a very unusual sight. A Hawaiian DC10 was parked here!!! Very unexpected, and a very nice sight I might add.
All in all I give AA an A. Very nice f/a's, comfortable planes.I will fly them again. It's good to be home, even it is for a week.

Flew Atl-Msy on an L1011 and 763, both of the flights were full, and both times we got full beverage service. One of the flights I got a deli bag, which had a sub,chips,cookies, and something else in it. In my opinion great Y service;maybe you just had a bad flight>

The Hawaiian DC-10 was a Sports Charter, according to Tom In NO. You could probaly get the details from him. MSY is a great Airport. Glad you had a good flight.

Nice report.
I enjoyed reading it, especially if it's written by someone who likes American. It sounds like your trip went pretty well. It's interesting to know that the last 727 will be retired in two years from now, yes...right...the last one will be on its way out in 2003. I will miss them too.

I noticed when I was in DFW too that lots of the flights (even the short & medium-haul domestic ones) take up a whole lot of runway when taking off. Is this because of altitude issues or something having to do with increased airspeed etc?

There are several resons for a long takeof roll.

First, depending on when you were here, it was probably hot. I mean, we have yet to have a freeze this year. And hot air means less power from a jet engine, or even a car engine for that matter.

Second, all American 727's have longer takeoff rolls. This is as a result from the type of hushkit they chose for the plane. See, the hushkit doesn't make the plane much quieter, it just changes the flaps/slats so that it gets a bit more lift. But because the plane is not much quieter, it has to use reduced takeoff power to keep the noise within requirements. Also, keep in mind, that not all of AA's 727's have been retrofitted with hushkits at all yet.
