Hi, this report is about my recent trip to MUC. The flights covered are AMS-MUC on LH Cityline’s AR8 in business class, and MUC-AMS in Augsburg Airways’ ERJ-195 in economy.
A few weeks ago, my good friend and fellow anetter WindowSeat let me know he’d be in Munich for work. As MUC is practically next door for me, I looked into air fares, but was disappointed. A SAT-SUN round-trip would set me back well over 200 euros. A little too much! I couldn’t resist checking the fare again one day later, and found that it had dropped to 99 euro’s on LH!

I didn’t hesitate and proceeded to book. I chose the earliest outbound flight on Saturday, operated by Lufthansa Cityline, with their AR8. I’m a big Avrojet fan so I was looking forward to another ride. For the way back I determined it would be a nice chance to get a ride on the ERJ-195. Instead of Cityline I opted for the once daily Augsburg Airways flight, in order to score a new airline as well.

I was working on Friday the 25th, having the late shift, and found out that I would be riding the D-AVRB the next day. My friends at LH arranged an upgrade for me, and got me into seat 1A, with a great engine view! I got up around 4:30am the next day and made it to the airport at around 6AM. Thankfully I could use the priority security lane as the regular lane was completely full. I cleared security in less than two minutes, got some coffee, and headed to gate B23.

D-AVRB was the third AR8 for Cityline, delivered in 1994.

I said goodbye to my coworkers at the gate and was the first passenger on board. Three others followed me into the business class. There were 56 pax in the back, so not a very full flight. 1A is a bulkhead seat and the legroom is rather poor, however the view makes up for it!

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/1262/dscf8855w.jpg

Besides the usual complimentary newspaper offerings on LH, business class pax are also offered a variety of magazines (i.e. TIME or the Economist) Everyone got settled in time. Before the doors closed the purser walked up and down the cabin with a black backpack which had been left at the gate, however no one responded. We pushed back on schedule. On engine startup I immediately noticed the noise level in the Avro up front is WAY less than in the back! As usual, a long taxi followed to RW36L, the dreaded Polderbaan.

I just love this engine view!

Take-off on the little quad was not very spectacular due to the light load and the long runway. After turning into the direction of MUC we climbed through the clouds and into the sunshine

http://img858.imageshack.us/img858/9966/dscf8849.jpg

The purser walked down the biz section offering everyone glasses with orange juice or water, and he unfolded the table in the seat next to me. Breakfast concluded of oatmeal with honey, yoghurt and blueberries, and croissants. I also got a cup of coffee next to my orange juice. Both the purser and the other flight attendant were very friendly. The breakfast tasted good though it was very light in my opinion.

Soon enough we started our descend into MUC. The cockpit crew gave us some destination information and told us we’d be landing on time. The final descent was pretty steep!

We reached the stand a couple of minutes ahead of schedule. We were allowed to disembark at the front and rear, however I was determined to use the Avrojet’s Airstairs. The passenger directly behind me asked the purser for his camera bag, to which he responded that it was still in AMS. It was the back he showed around during boarding! I thanked the purser and got on the bus to the terminal.

The arrival at MUC was very smooth and I enjoyed the modern and clean terminal. I got a ticket for the S Bahn into town and texted WindowSeat that I’d made it to MUC in one piece, and that we’d be meeting at the hotel. After 45 minutes on the train, I transferred at the Hauptbahnhof for the subway. I was surprised to see some ancient subway trains! I think they were built in the 60s or so. At least they were in better condition than the tin cans that ride around Amsterdam.

After meeting WindowSeat at the hotel we decided to head to the Dachau concentration camp, the BMW welt and Olympia park, and to get some beers in town that night. Some impressions of MUC;

Dachau was pretty impressive and is well worth a visit. It’s easily accessible by a train/bus combination. After heading back to town we visited the BMW welt. I’m not really a fan of German cars but the building itself is worth a visit, it even has an indoor test driving track!

After heading back to the center, we decided to drop by at the famous “Hofbrauhaus”. We intended to have one beer here, but this place was so fantastic we ended up spending the entire evening among the drunken Germans! Great atmosphere, people, and of course, beer!

Thankfully we found our way back to the hotel, thanks to my good instincts. (right, V?)
After sleeping off our hangover we had some excellent breakfast, and went into town for some sightseeing around the city center. We didn’t have that long as my flight would be leaving at 5PM and I wanted to head back to the airport around 2PM. Some impressions of the MUC center.

At around 2PM we made our way back to the Hauptbahnhof, said goodbye to WindowSeat, and I got onto the S8 to MUC. In all this train is pretty convenient, but I wish they had an express train which didn’t stop at all the small stations!

I had already checked in by phone the previous day, and so I could proceed straight to the gate. That’s until I saw a sign saying observation deck! I could do some spotting instead! The deck was pretty cool but unfortunately the weather was really bad. Nonetheless a lot of LH movements to be seen. Also lots of AirDolomiti planes.

After some spotting I decided to go to the gate area. Airbuseric had informed me that D-AEME would be scheduled for today, an Augsburg Airways E95 as I had hoped! Security was a breeze and I easily found my way to the gate. I really love MUC T2, everything is spacious and clean, and somehow a very calm atmosphere.

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/1198/dscf8962b.jpg

We got onto a Swissport bus and headed towards the aircraft. I was really surprised by the presence of so many Air Dolomiti planes!

I got on board and was greeted at the door by two friendly flight attendants. I made my way to seat 19A and I found a very pretty Italian girl in my seat. Sorry honey but you have to move! I’m sitting here. The seat was very comfortable and way better than the ones I had tried before on BA Cityflyer. I was impressed by the legroom and overall spacious feeling of the regional jet. It almost felt like a mainline jet! To my horror I soon found out that the Italian girl was travelling in a group, and her friends were all around me making a lot of noise.

Everyone got settled and the flight was reasonably full as far as I could see. We pushed back 3 minutes late and the CF-34-10E’s slowly whined to life with a lovely sound. A short taxi to the active and a rolling take-off followed. Due to the water on the windows the take-off video is not worth sharing.

In cruise
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/505/dscf8977c.jpg

The service consisted of an Italian salad (the irony) with Italian breadsticks. I only remembered to make a picture until after I ate it. Of course I opted for a beer as LH is the only airline around here to still offer glass bottles!

We also got a tiny, but tasty, Augsburg Airways chocolate

The cabin crew was very friendly and attentive. I spent the remainder of the flight doing some reading and looking out the window

After a short cruise we started descending into AMS. Some very nice weather in the Netherlands instead of rainy MUC!

I got on the bus and was home less than 40 minutes after leaving the plane!

-------------------------------------------------------
Conclusions;

Cityline AR8
The business class service was alright, the crew took good care of me and for the short flight it was fine. The legroom in 1A is rather poor. I’d still choose the Avrojet over any other regional jet, though it’s rather cramped and noisy in the back. I just love it!

Augsburg E95
I usually hate the E95 at work, because they are a total nightmare when it comes to weight and balance. However from a passenger POV I loved it! The seats were better than on the only other Ejet I’d been on, the BA Cityflyer E70. The legroom was great and it’s hard to think it’s actually a Regional jet. Especially when compared to the CR2 for example. The Augsburg crew was very friendly and I can recommend them to everyone.

MUC
Loved the city, and loved the airport! Both are very clean. The city has a lot to offer and I could easily spent more time there. The airport, at least the LH part, is fantastic.

-------------------------------------------------------
A special thanks to my friends at LH for the upgrade, and to WindowSeat for the good company! Thanks for reading and any remarks / comments are always appreciated.

Regards,

Martijn

Hi Martijn,

nice report on a rather standard route which I've flown so often. The best is that this route sees such a nice mix of aircraft types. Nice that your collegues were able to put you upfront, especially being on a revenue ticket. Since you're working for their groundhandler, can you use 'staff tix' on LH group?

btw,, the chocolate you got in C on LH is the same one as I got on my Condor flight   In Y...

Haai Martijn,

Thanks for your report on the AMS-MUC-AMS sector, a nice story and comparison of 2 regional jets. Having also flown them both I personally like the E195 more, it has a more spacious feeling inside and is more modern.
Good thing your colleagues provided you with a business class seat although I believe that the difference with eco is rather small on these short flights, isn't it?

Hey Martijn,

Just amazing! I was surprised to see LH could serve such a breakfast on a short flight though...
Munich looks very modern and so future minded. Great architecture.
Dolomiti seems like a strange airline imo... They call Munich Monaco.. :S

Hey Martijn, great report!

€99 is a great fare, considering those Sat-Sun weekend trips are really expensive normally. LH's short haul J class looked pretty decent, food offerings looked rather adequate for the duration of your flight. Do you know what they serve on daytime flights? Also, were you able to use the Lounge in AMS?

The return flight looked really nice. Just love how LH have gone back to offering a proper full service to their costumers, pretty impressed to see them serving a salad in Y for such a short flight. Makes me wonder if they'll start serving hot meals on the longer sectors, i.e ARN-FRA/MUC.

Tix with a Sat/Sun night are always the cheapest actually... it brings down the price a lot.

The LH lounge is really not good in AMS, even if he didn't go he didn't miss anything

LH served hotmeals since many years on longer European sectors also in Y. On MUC-MAD/FRA-MAD flights I had hot meals before. ARN-MUC is too short and receive a regular service compared to the one Martijn got on his flights. LH has always served a kind of meal/snack, they just changed the items now (the sandwiches are now also replaced for a small salad or a muffin, or muesli etc)

Well they are certainly one of the better airlines out there

Hi Martijn,

Great trip report as usual. Service on the LH business class seems to be alright. It appears you've had a great time in Munich with Windowseat. Munich must be a great place to visit.

Quoting CrimsonNL (Thread starter):
The seat was very comfortable and way better than the ones I had tried before on BA Cityflyer.

I know how you hate it when someone warms up your seat. I'm glad to hear you've still had a nice flight. These seats indeed look better than on BA's Cityjet/flyer? I think Air Dolomiti offers even more legspace, I'm not sure of that.

Tim,

Hello Martijn!

Thank you for another great story! I´m a big fan of both the Avro and the Embraer so this was a very enjoyable read!

Also some good videos!

Greetings
Robert

Great report and pictures - thanks for posting. EUR99 is a decent price I would imagine. The domestic J experience within Europe is generally pretty shabby due to the seats being regular Y seats (and legroom) with just the middle seat blocked off. Was that the case on your AMS-MUC sector as well, or did they have different seats for J?

Thanks Tim!

They really were, the seatback didn't end at the height of my neck so you could comfortably lay back in these.

Yes this was the case indeed, the middle seat, (or in my case the seat next to me) is blocked. I can't think of any European carrier with dedicated biz seats on short haul equipment. This does make it very flexible in terms of business class bookings!

Hi Martijn,

Excellent report   Really nice photos of your flights and of Munich also.

Quoting CrimsonNL (Thread starter):
My friends at LH arranged an upgrade for me, and got me into seat 1A, with a great engine view!

Very nice

. I was surprised to see some ancient subway trains! I think they were built in the 60s or so

I loved the U-Bahn trains in MUC, although I didn't use them much.

Quoting CrimsonNL (Thread starter):
Some impressions of MUC;

This gives me some more ideas for stuff to do next time I'm in MUC! I did Dachau last time
Quoting CrimsonNL (Thread starter):
Yours truly enjoying a beer

Something I should've done
Quoting CrimsonNL (Thread starter):
In all this train is pretty convenient, but I wish they had an express train which didn’t stop at all the small stations!

I agree completely. It would be nice to have a train service (even if less frequent than the current S1/8) that stops at less stations.

Quoting CrimsonNL (Thread starter):
The seat was very comfortable and way better than the ones I had tried before on BA Cityflyer.

I may have to book a trip on a LH E-jet now just for comparison's sake now I have tried both BE and BA variants

Again, thanks for posting   A very enjoyable read.

Regards,
Daniel.
