know, that it wasn´t that easy to reach my home office ontime to catch the next flights.
My bed welcomes me at 01.45 am, with the cell phone alarm set for 02.30 am.
Believe it or not, it doesn´t feel like 45 minutes only. The cell phone calls, double checked and for real, it was 45 minutes, I´am ontime, better a short sleep than no sleep at all!.
Absolutely no chance to miss todays schedule,
a new airline and a new departure airport, like the story title.
Service XQ 791 operated by Sun Express
Scheduled: 05.50 // 09.55
On the road at 03.30 am, no OLCI available and no chance to do the late-night-check-in the evening before, thanx to the
AirFrance/Regional party.
It´s the winter vacation week, so I expect a good load on this service today.
Nevertheless the fare is pretty ok, 60.00 Euro´s fixed with Exp.de..
Sleeping, sorry, driving down the free motorway and 4.15 am at the airport as scheduled.
My service looks like ok
Any idea what happens with AF to LYS?.
Ok, we know it better this time!
Three counters open in terminal 3 and as expected, me and
the crowd of turkish VFR travellers all around.
Dont get me wrong, no problems with these people, but really interesting to follow the action at the counters.
Kids crying, parents complaining. "No, we don´t know that it isn´t possible to check-in only seven suitcases with three seats booked without paying an excess baggage fee".
It´s simply unbelievable to see what these people try to check-in in from Germany to Turkey.
Well, at the counter after some 10 to 15 minutes.
A young, female turkish agent there.
"Just me, no bags and the window last row, please".
No comment, but a deep breath and really friendly smile follows.
With five flights to depart at the same time, also T1 security is well used today, but nothing serious, some five minutes to wait.
It´s the only service from this part of terminal 1 this early morning time, so it´s calm all around.
No time to wait at passport control and in the gate area with not as expected, not that much pax around my place 113.
The plane is on nightstop, may I see a new registration today?
Boarding is called pretty early, short after 5.00 am and is going slowly forward with also wheelchair travellers, baby carriages and else.
That looks like TC-SUJ, no new reg. here, the second time on this plane and leg no. 54 on the B738 at all.
My ride also to Adana, a couple of days ago only
There are 25 planes on type in the actual XQ fleet.
Me boarding with the last pax at the gate, as usual around these services, not the last at all, with some more people at passport control.
A very warm welcome at the planes door from a nice middle aged female turkish FA.
We talked about the good load and the very slow boarding action.
Once again it seem´s I´am the special pax here.
"What about your intention today to go for Ankara, politics?".
With Ankara as the political centre of Turkey, it seems there is nothing else to do there for a German in winter around all these turkish people.
"Well, there´s a special interest in aviation, doing pictures, writing stories and today´s theme is
an appointment with AnadoluJet".
"So it´s more a business thing".
"Not at all, but something like this".
Also the last row is taken with an older woman in my seat.
"I will wait if there is something else acceptable for me".
"Sure ok, there are some more pax to come", is the answer from the young male FA in the rear galley.
Well, the plane filled up till the nice female FA from the front door approaches me, talked quiet:
"The exit row is not sold today and it´s free for you, if you want".
Exit row seats are available only for 20.00 Euro´s extra on XQ, so I bid farewell to the last row and accepted the nice offer.
Thanx, pretty good and personal service here again with XQ.
All together one ok young male and three female FA´s,
all turkish, the other two females also ok.
The 738 as scheduled
It´s finally 06.00 am, ten minutes late, cold with -6 degrees, when we leave STR from 07 for the 2 hours, 50 minutes to ESB.
Dark cabin view with XQ´s destinations on the screens
Bremen, been there, maybe exciting for the turkish people
No legroom complaints in the exit row, 16A, three for me in the end, also with the good load, more than 90%
The seats en detail, dark blue leather, well used
Engine view with the sun coming up
Cockpit crew is also turkish, the pilot with detailed informations inflight in turkish and english.
Flightlevel is maximum 37000 feet above VIE, BUD, further along the Danube and IST.
Nice colours on the winglet
"Afiyet olsun", we will see
Sure ok for me this early morning time,
coffee, breadroll and a small piece of cake
What´s wrong here?.
We´re approaching an airport with something white on the grass
Pretty low clouds till short ahead to touchdown on the 3750 meters runway 03R. It´s
9.50 am local, 8.50 am in Germany, light snow, shudder and the temperature is - 1 degrees
Jet from India, this plane goes tech the night before and diverted to ESB, together with an unknown IL76 on the apron
I don´t need more snow, but this is definitely Ankara- Esenboga here.
Looks like pretty modern
At the gate beside that huge TK A330
The finger position is for sure warm welcomed today.
A last view to my machine returning directly to STR
Wow, I´am impressed, that terminal is superb
Arts in the arrivals level
Airy and clean
Some minutes at the check point, another stamp in my passport and so I´am in Turkey again.
No sleep in the plane and I´ve doesn´t feel that tired,
should I go more often this way?.

Service Turkish Airlines TK 7350 operated by AnadoluJet
Scheduled: 14.30 // 16.05
OLCI for AnadoluJet works after several tries ok.
The website links to the TK website
and there it is possible, after some typing with the reservation code and the ticket number to check-in.
Printed at home, no need to go to the counters here.
Business is done via Exp.de, the fare somewhat higher than my usual standards with 110.00 Euro´s, but the connection fits perfectly this way.
With the non welcoming weather conditions I decide to stay at the airport and view the details.
That´s the domestic check-in hall, also clean and airy
Stairs to the groundfloor arrivals area
From the upper restaurant level
The nice looking restaurant at the main level
Dont get me wrong, but ESB is built for far more traffic than it actually attracts, we will see whats going on there.
So, what about the weather, any chance to go for view outdoor?.
Not that really, snow showers here and then,
heavy snow stopped all traffic the upcoming Wednesday, so it seems I was lucky to do this two days earlier
A cafe at the ground floor
The biz area close by
Arts in the central terminal
Curbside view
So, there is no lounge information about ESB on the "Miles and More" website, there is also no positive information from the counter when I asked there.
"It´s a business lounge available for all passengers, but you need to pay an entrance fee".
Thanx, not for me today.
What to do when the prices are really sky high,
like the name of the upper level coffee bar?.
But where are all the workers go for a midday break?.
There is a self service restaurant at the ground floor
and I follow the employees around noon for some coffee and "Ekmek/Bread" at my price level!.
My flight shows counter open, time to go airside for me
Another shaking head police officer, when he see my arrivals stamp. But no question at all, leaving Turkey again.
One customer and five security staff together with two police officers, wow that´s an impressive client/staff ratio here.
Apron view with AnadoluJet and an SkyAirlines A320 in AnadoluJet colours parked
View from above to the arrivals area
What about that sign on the upper level, looking like TK style?
Remember the no lounge information.
Well, anyone know the very important rules.
Don´t believe anyone, check it for yourself, as rule one.
And what about rule two?. Never forget rule one.
Me going upstairs and whats there?.
A male agent at the door.
"Good day, is this a TK lounge here?.
"Sure it is".
"I´am Star Alliance Frequent Traveller, is it possible to go inside?".
"Well, let me check it".
"Welcome Sir, enjoy you´re stay!
It´s a small place only, no airside views, but coffee and some more details on offer
Nice seaters here and I´am the one and only customer
Coffee for me and after some more minutes inside I decide to check "Kapi" 116 and the action around
Sky closeby, started domestic scheduled operations only a couple of weeks ago
Jet repaired on the run for departures
And what about that cute winglet fitted plane turning for my gate
It looks like my machine is TC-JKL "Anamur", leg no. 31 on the 737-700 and a new registration.
The 737-800 is on schedule, but the -700 is perfectly ok.
There are 10 737-700´s in the actual fleet.
With the leased Sky plane still in the background
Gate change for 117, the one beside
Borajet ATR in the background now also with Anadolujet livery
Ground handling action
Boarding is called well ontime, not bad with my short connection in Vienna.
What about these seats?. That´s my first run on this airline, but I´ve seen these blue red leather seats before, but where?
No more rain, but low clouds when we leave ESB again via 03R
at 02.30 pm, ontime with + 1 degrees.
2 hours, 20 minutes for Vienna
Cabin crew is all turkish, four young and nice females.
Cockpit crew is also turkish, the captain is on the mike very nice and detailed during boarding, he wished the crew a good flight.
Up through the clouds
And I don´t find the solution with these seats and cabin
The very well used safety card
And also an extra magazin here
Legroom is somewhat low, seat 27F, the last row window, three for me, no recline. The cabin is also not that really clean and the load is some 70%, again close to all turkish pax
Anyone find the pre-operator solution?.
This plane was first in service with now defunct Slowakian Skyeurope from 26.01.2007 and joining Anadolujet at 04.11.2009.
The airline is covered in my log, but thankfully not the plane itself
Meal details, well served here and no, that´s not coke, it´s my usual coffee
Much better weather conditions close to Austria.
Flightlevel is 40000 feet maximum via Varna, Bucharest and further south of Budapest
Coming in above the Neusiedler lake
Touchdown on the 3600 meters runway 34, it´s 03.50 pm, 15 minutes ahead to schedule. The weather is nice and sunny here with + 3 degrees.
No, thats not ok, taken over by these VO F100
A gate position, connection time is not that much,
we will see how it works

Service Austrian OS 187 operated by Austrian arrows/Tyrolean Airways
Scheduled: 17.20 // 18.40
Simply no one in front at passport check and finally back in the Schengen zone within a minute.
Booking is done via Exp.de, the fare 40.00 Euro´s secured together with the return leg in early May.
OLCI is done from my home office and works quick and easy.
Now, follow me to the OS lounge
Dinner, no way that´s to early for me today
That fit´s better, some nut cake and well, coffee number, who know´s, today
The lounge is well used, sure, a view to the apron is possible, but all seats taken
Done it this way, ok for cake and coffee
For STR "Go to gate", the lounge is prior to the security checks, well lets go
The fast lane is open for me, not a minute to wait and in the downstairs gate area. B40, every Vienna visitor know that this place is not the really recommendable part of the terminal.
And together with some heavy construction work, its definitely a shame to use it for passenger services today.
The gate box opened by a stressed, but nevertheless good looking austrian female agent and on the bus for the apron scenic drive.
Now thats for sure a Fokker tail
Austrian arrows operated by Tyrolean, yes we know
What a shorty fuselage, the F100 is on schedule, but the F70 is also warm welcomed
"Stadt Salzburg", OE-LFH, here we come.
In service with Tyrolean since 11.08.1995,
one of 9 in the actual fleet
Leg no. 9 on type and the second ride on this plane, after Vienna to Sofia a couple of years ago.
Boarding view
What about these strange seat colours, not my personal favourite
Departure from the 3500 meters runway 29 at 05.15 pm, close to ontime, still sunny, no clouds and + 3 degrees.
One hour for STR.
The Fokker 70 safety card
Just between the wing and the engine.
16A, the second last row window, two for me and recline is also ok here
Cabin view, well maintained
Two female FA´s here, both from Austria, one younger, one elder and both nothing special.
London calling, sure, but not today!
Cockpit crew is also from Austria, the captain with a very nice welcome during boarding. He is later on also on the mike nice and detailed with inflight and arrivals informations.
Legroom is really good here, the cabin is clean, the load is 60%, mainly biz travellers.
Germanwings is in comparison on the same route
Just departed
Service is snack and coffee for free.
Wing and engine view
Flightlevel 30000 feet above Salzburg and Munich.
A curve with traffic above us
Touchdown at STR´s runway 07, it´s 6.20 pm, 20 minutes ahead to schedule, +7 degrees, clear sky, fairly no real reason today to leave STR weatherwise.
Apron disembarking, by bus to the terminal and as scheduled and also much earlier than the last arrival here, on the way back home for some warm welcomed hours of sleep.
Sorry, not that much hours, the next flight tomorrow morning is scheduled to leave STR again at 06.35 am.
"The Air Alps Dornier 328 around Salerno",
if nothing goes wrong, as usual.
Super nice, personal service with XQ, that company impressed me once more. My expectations are low with these vacation week VFR service.
Also Anadolujet is ok, not that personal like on XQ, but anyway recommendable.
No complaints with OS/VO, ontime, good fare but far from any special service here.
And ESB/Ankara airport is a real positive surprise, well done.

Hi Markus,
Nice to see another installment of yours popping up. I admire you on doing this trip, especially after a merely forty five minute sleep.
I have been interested in AnadoluJet and was wondering how the service would look like. Well, it is not disappointing. Big sister TK has set an example. Look at the meal, simply delicious!
However, the personal touch of XQ is also appealing. Just look how considerate the crew member has been to allow you occupying the exit row.
The ESB terminal interior is stunning! The designer has rightly adapted the indoor garden concept with high glass ceiling.

Hi Markus,
as usual a very nice TR with many good pictures.
The service on XQ looks ideed quite nice and in my opinion better than the german X3 or AB.
I would have never thought, that you leave your last raw, but an exit one is always nice.
ESB 's aiport reminded me somehow of LUX, it looks about the same there.
AndaluJet was okay in my eyes, and the Tyrolean flight was just standard.
Thank you a lot for sharing.

Hello Markus,
I agree with akhmad, the meal onboard AnadoluJet looks delicious!
As always, a very pleasant reading from you! Its nice to hear that your flying took you all the way to Turkey this time! The domestic Ankara terminal looks really charming, with its clean white look and wide spaces.
Its great to try both the 738 and 737-700 on the same day. I just love the winglets on both aircraft.
I found it interesting the little coffee cup accompanying your meal onboard SunExpress has the German words 'Guten Appetit' considering SunExpress is a Turkish carrier. What a really nice touch!
And yes, I agree with you on the odd combination of colours on the headrest covers on Austrian Arrows!

I'm quite impressed with what these less-known (well for me) Turkish carriers offer on these flights. Always nice to get some free catering & even better when it's good.

Hi Markus,
Thanks for keeping me up last night reading this instead of going to bed, but then again with your recent lack of sleep I guess it's only fair I share some of your parin .
That new Esenboga terminal looks very nice, although I guess it is vastly oversized for the traffic it nowadays gets! I'm not sure how you managed to spend half a day there - ultimately it looks quite a boring place...
Nice to get some insight into Anadolujet, I was looking into flying them a while ago on the ARN/CPH to SAW/ESB routes but found the fares rather high so abandoned that idea for the time being at least.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Believe it or not, it doesn´t feel like 45 minutes only. The cell phone calls, double checked and for real, it was 45 minutes, I´am ontime, better a short sleep than no sleep at all!.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): It´s simply unbelievable to see what these people try to check-in in from Germany to Turkey.
It's the same with "gastarbeiters" all around the world, ever seen a Philippine Airlines flight being checked in?
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Exit row seats are available only for 20.00 Euro´s extra on XQ, so I bid farewell to the last row and accepted the nice offer.
That's good! Although remember that the extra fee only applies to prebooked seats, they are free game at check in.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): We´re approaching an airport with something white on the grass

Whoa! I never expected to see snow in Turkey (outside the mountains, that is), but apparently it is true! Yeah, things really seem to be upside down with rather warm weather in STR and snow and coldness in ESB!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): A male agent at the door.

Hmm, the fact that all the Anadolujet flights are operated with the TK flight number might work to your advantage here. But he was wrong, technically you are not allowed in, not as a Silver. Still nice it worked to your favor.
BTW there's no such thing as "*A FTL", there is "*A Silver" and "LH FTL", though.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): And what about that cute winglet fitted plane turning for my gate
Yea, the -700 does look quite cute with winglets. I wonder how a -600 would look, probably quite funny.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): What about these seats?. That´s my first run on this airline, but I´ve seen these blue red leather seats before, but where?
Hey, I thought of SkyEurope the very moment I saw the photo!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Meal details, well served here and no, that´s not coke, it´s my usual coffee
Hmm, that's very impressive. I'm actually quite confused about this whole Anadolujet concept. I though the idea was to be a LCC, but the fares (at least international ones) are not really LCC calibre, and then you get a free meal which is very confusing. Why can't they just operate these as regular TK mainline flights instead?
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): The fast lane is open for me, not a minute to wait and in the downstairs gate area. B40, every Vienna visitor know that this place is not the really recommendable part of the terminal.

Then again pretty much everything they do is flying between Germany (or at least German-speaking countries) and Turkey, so not that surprising. Ok, they have flights to some other countries as well, but the home market is definitely German/Turkish speaking.

Hi Markus,
I cannot believe you flew all the way to Turkey and found snow! Dear me. Still, that impressive looking terminal at Ankara more than made up for it. And it seems XQ offered a good service again. Good to catch something exotic as ell with Anadolujet.
Oooh, that wouldn't have been a good start to the day.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): "No, we don´t know that it isn´t possible to check-in only seven suitcases with three seats booked without paying an excess baggage fee".
Unbelievable indeed.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): No comment, but a deep breath and really friendly smile follows.
You must have been a breath of fresh air after all the others and their excess luggage!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): No sleep in the plane and I´ve doesn´t feel that tired,
should I go more often this way?.
That's the excitement of such a day flying, the adrenalin keeps you going!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Don´t believe anyone, check it for yourself, as rule one.
Not even the information desk?!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): What about these strange seat colours, not my personal favourite
Very dated, it looks like OS could do with a revamp
Happy flying

ESB looks very nice. This is the first trip report I've seen that includes it and I'm glad it's getting shown off here it's fairly obscure for such a nice large airport.
XQ is good as usual and I have always wondered what AnadoluJet was like and it seems decent.
Lots of the people who have commented are surprised that it snows in Ankara / Turkey and I just want to say that central Turkey is a cold semi-arid climate which has cold snowy winters and hot dry summers. It doesn't get moderated by the ocean like the climate in Germany and it is on a much higher elevation which makes it much colder on average in the winter. It even snows in the mediterranean parts of Turkey even though it's not common. The good weather that people expect to find in Turkey is only on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts once you pass the mountains it becomes much more harsh.

Hey and nice to see such a good number of comments.
@Gavin:
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 12): I agree with akhmad, the meal onboard AnadoluJet looks delicious!
As always, a very pleasant reading from you! Its nice to hear that your flying took you all the way to Turkey this time! The domestic Ankara terminal looks really charming, with its clean white look and wide spaces.
Hey, welcome and thanx for you´re feedback.
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 12): Its great to try both the 738 and 737-700 on the same day. I just love the winglets on both aircraft.
Sure it looks really nice on the 737.
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 12): I found it interesting the little coffee cup accompanying your meal onboard SunExpress has the German words 'Guten Appetit' considering SunExpress is a Turkish carrier. What a really nice touch!
Definitely the point here.
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 12): And yes, I agree with you on the odd combination of colours on the headrest covers on Austrian Arrows!
Quoting Aflyingkiwi (Reply 13): I'm quite impressed with what these less-known (well for me) Turkish carriers offer on these flights. Always nice to get some free catering & even better when it's good.
Definitely a good level on Germany-Turkey services.
Quoting Aflyingkiwi (Reply 13): The new terminal at ESB looks very impressive though it does look eerily empty. Hope that they can gain some new service in the future.
Me, too, there is a lot of space to fill.
Quoting Aflyingkiwi (Reply 13):
Sounds very interesting, looking forward to reading it.
Coming up, hopefully soon.
@Lars:
Quoting The777Man (Reply 14): A very nice report with very nice pictures! XQ looks great and service seems to be very good as well. ESB looks amazing similiar in a littile bit to CDG 2F. Much nicer than IST airport for sure. I had no idea that they got snow in Anakara....a bit odd that it was warmer in STR than ESB..
Thank you and also my impression with ESB, much better than expected.
Quoting The777Man (Reply 14):
Seat colors are like that on most if not all of OS aircraft, their 777s for sure look like that.
Good to know.
@Nils:
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 15): Nice report with the world upside down: bad weather in Turkey (where it's supposed to be good) and good weather in Western Europe. Indeed lucky for you getting not caught up in snow in ESB!
For sure you are becoming a nocturnal person , so little sleep I could not make it that way, especially not with little children around the house...
Thank you and I was not amused to see that snowflakes down at ESB.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): Thanks for keeping me up last night reading this instead of going to bed, but then again with your recent lack of sleep I guess it's only fair I share some of your parin
I do my very best, you know.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): That new Esenboga terminal looks very nice, although I guess it is vastly oversized for the traffic it nowadays gets! I'm not sure how you managed to spend half a day there - ultimately it looks quite a boring place...
People watching, book reading, time goes by quick!.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): Nice to get some insight into Anadolujet, I was looking into flying them a while ago on the ARN/CPH to SAW/ESB routes but found the fares rather high so abandoned that idea for the time being at least.
Also the fare was higher than my usual limit, but worth it.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): It's the same with "gastarbeiters" all around the world, ever seen a Philippine Airlines flight being checked in?
Good point, that´s exactly the feeling.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): That's good! Although remember that the extra fee only applies to prebooked seats, they are free game at check in.
And not used by other pax on my service.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): Whoa! I never expected to see snow in Turkey (outside the mountains, that is), but apparently it is true! Yeah, things really seem to be upside down with rather warm weather in STR and snow and coldness in ESB!
Exactly my feeling when the pilot told us about the arrivals weather.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16):
Where is that used? IST I assume - might be worth looking into, never flown on one myself...
IIRC it was another example of these Jeddah runs, no domestic widebody service at all.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): Hmm, the fact that all the Anadolujet flights are operated with the TK flight number might work to your advantage here. But he was wrong, technically you are not allowed in, not as a Silver. Still nice it worked to your favor.
So a bit confusion seems good for free lounge access!.
Thanx for the level correction.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): Yea, the -700 does look quite cute with winglets. I wonder how a -600 would look, probably quite funny.
That might be an interesting view.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16):
Hey, I thought of SkyEurope the very moment I saw the photo!
Good point, noticed it only back at home.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): Hmm, that's very impressive. I'm actually quite confused about this whole Anadolujet concept. I though the idea was to be a LCC, but the fares (at least international ones) are not really LCC calibre, and then you get a free meal which is very confusing. Why can't they just operate these as regular TK mainline flights instead?
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 16): Then again pretty much everything they do is flying between Germany (or at least German-speaking countries) and Turkey, so not that surprising. Ok, they have flights to some other countries as well, but the home market is definitely German/Turkish speaking.
Good point, the major market is Germany-Turkey.

You really do go to Turkey very often!! Very jealous
Thank you, it´s an interesting country, not that I told you anything new with my opinion.!.
Quoting gardermoen (Reply 19): What was the TK 330 doing at Ankara?
A scheduled flight? I would have thought most of TK's Ankara flights would be of the A320/737 variety.
Sure the case, IIRC it was another example of these Jeddah runs.

Turkey is promoted exactly like these sunny mediterranean climate, but we know that there are also other parts of the country weatherwise.
I will do also the black sea coast, so maybe another climate again.

Hi Markus,
another nice report, well done, and all that after just a few minutes of sleep
I am quite impressed by the service of SunExpress, looks very nice. And ESB airport sure is impressive, this airport is actually not that much covered here, so thanks for the pics.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1): B40, every Vienna visitor know that this place is not the really recommendable part of the terminal.
Indeed, I have just been there on my flight to FKB and I agree that is a rather unpleasant place, I wonder with the construction there it will improve somehow.
