What is fifth freedom? I read a great explanation on this forum that went something like this: It is a great way for aviation enthusiast to try exotic airlines without the need to travel to their home country.
And since I do not have any plans to travel to Singapore anytime in the future, their MUC-MAN service is a great opportunity to try an airline, which is considerate to be one of the world’s best.
I manage to convince some friends and family that this is a great thing for a weekend trip. Munich is close to Ljubljana (only about 4 hours by car), but of course we decided to fly there, spend the night and go to Manchester with SQ the next day, then taking a train down to London and flying with EasyJet on the way back.
There are already at least two great reports about this flight, which I have read:
I have already done a trip report on the JP LJU-MUC route with the CRJ9, but I will post some different pictures from the once you have already seen on this leg.
After a quick check-in (there was no line in the terminal) we went to the visitors terrace next to the terminal building.
The view of the aircraft parked at the terminal gates is not that great, but it is better than nothing.
DHL B757 cargo.
G-EZDR pushing back for the flight back to London STN. I will arrive in three days on the same flight and on the same aircraft!
Airside, first floor of the terminal building.
You two have a very cool job
S5-AAN to FRA.
Boarding started at 18:10 for the 18:30 flight.
Quick bus ride and we stopped in front of S5-AAL, the scheduled CRJ9.
Nice view of the aircraft.
Five rows of business today with only one or two passengers.
Cabin view from my seat.
We started on time and my favorite sound of the engines starting up filled the cabin. Quick taxi and we were on our way!
The 'meal' is still the same as it was in August, only the water provider changed.
Some nice scenery.
I like the reflection of the logo.
Cabin view from the back.
Last row is without a window – a note to those, who prefer to sit in the back row, I would recommend row 21 on JP CRJ900.
The weather started to get worse. It was a great and sunny day in Ljubljana, but in Munich it was raining.
We landed after a very short flight time of 50 minutes.
I have never gone to the baggage claim area in MUC, despite I have been here multiple times.
It is nice and spacious, I do not think there are a lot of PAX that go down here, as most of them are transiting.
And in exactly 5 minutes bags started to roll out on the conveyor belt.
After dinner at the airport we spent the rest of the evening at the visitor’s terrace, it is opened until 22:00.
Next: Singapore Airlines!
This will be my 6th Boeing 777 flight and 3rd B777-300ER flight. I have done a FRA-GRU-FRA roundtrip with TAM a few years ago.
A very early wake up call, but I was excited about my flight so I did not care too much. Check in area was empty, we checked in at the first class counter.
Singapore airlines boarding pass! I was getting more and more excited.
The flight from SIN was supposed to arrive late, but actually it was on time.
Here it is after a long flight from Singapore.
B77W, great aircraft.
A346 is still my favorite wide body though.
It is impressing how quick such a big aircraft is turned around. Less than an hour and it was on it's way again.
Our crew. I do not remember seeing famous Singapore girls live before.
Boarding. Only around 20 passengers boarded the flight.
Blurry, sorry.
Down the escalators…
…through the jetway…
…and onto Singapore airlines B777-300ER! The reason we took this trip in the first place. There were only two passengers in business class.
The seat width is just amazing.
It looks so calm and fresh. I walked thought the business class cabin and entered the first economy section…
…and there was a lot of PAX from the flight from Singapore already onboard. They looked tired, sleepy, weak,… What was for me a beginning of a great flight was for them another leg in their journey to their final destination. They have already been on this aircraft when I was waiting for boarding the other day in Ljubljana.
My seat, a pillow and a blanket were already waiting for me. First impression was very good.
Some Lufthansa aircraft next door.
IFE control. We pushed back a little late and we were airborne soon after.
Sun trying to shine thought the clouds.
Flight information display.
I remembered we flew over Brussels.
The table mirror is a nice feature I haven't seen before.
Dirty wing on SQ?
Two options for breakfast today – pastries or cheese, ham and egg sandwich. I went with the first.
Sandwich:
Cup holder is another nice feature.
My friend ordered the sandwich, but was given an empty plate with no explanation.
I thought that this will be a -1 point for SQ service, but the FA came back soon, apologized because they had no more sandwiches and brought a meal from business class. +1 for SQ. She came back before descent and asked if the meal was ok. +2
I was trying to stay awake and enjoy the short flight as much as I can.
Cabin view from my seat.
We started our descent into Manchester too soon.
Cloudy day.
Almost there.
Wet runway. This was actually the worst landing I have experienced, it seemed that there was a gust of wind just before landing that shook us up pretty well.
Hello MAN!
Blurry AA B757.
Cabin after almost all passengers left the plane.
Gallery.
Our plane was 9W-SWF
It started raining in Manchester. Luckily the weather in London was better.
One last look of our aircraft.
United. Or is it Continental? Must be confusing for those, who do not know a lot about aviation.
I had the highest expectations from Singapore Airlines and they did not disappoint me. From what I have experience on this flight and read in other trip reports they are a great airline and I would not mind flying with them all the way to Singapore and beyond. I hope I will get that chance one day and if SQ will be an option on any of my future routes I will probably choose to fly with them.
Now that we were in Manchester we had to get to London somehow. We decided to try the Virgin Trains Pendolino. I'm sure they are some ferroequinologists among aviation enthusiasts, so I will post a few pictures from our train ride. Here is our train:
Not a lot of stops, most of them are very near to Manchester.
Coach K for us today.
When I was looking for fares on Virgin website I actually found a first class fare that was cheaper than an economy class ticket on the same train. I decided to take a chance and booked it, e-tickets arrived a few hours later, printed them and had no problems on the journey. Very simple and efficient.
Coach K is the first (or last) coach of the train and no other passengers joined us, so we had the whole coach for ourselves.
The ride is quick, it only takes a little over 2 hours.
And soon we arrived at London Euston station.
This sure is a great way to get from Manchester to London.
Long taxi queue, but it did not take more than five minutes to get a typical London black cab.
After two nice days in London it was time to go back home with EasyJet.
A guy sitting at a bar at Heathrow noticed a really beautiful woman sitting next to him.
He thought to himself: "Wow, she's so gorgeous she must be an off duty flight attendant. But which airline does she work for?"
Hoping to pick her up, he leaned towards her and uttered the Delta slogan:
"Love to fly and it shows?"
She gave him a blank, confused stare and he immediately thought to himself:
"Damn, she doesn't work for Delta."
A moment later, another slogan popped into his head.
He leaned towards her again,
"Something special in the air?"
She gave him the same confused look.
He mentally kicked himself, and scratched Singapore Airlines off the list.
Next he tried the Thai Airways slogan:
"Smooth as Silk."
This time the woman turned on him,
"What the fuck do you want?"
The man smiled, then slumped back in his chair, and said
"Ahhhhh, EasyJet".
I have flown EasyJet twice before – VCE-LGW and BRS-VCE and both flights were very nice in my opinion, the crew was friendly, the aircraft was ok, nothing to complain about. Since then I have read a lot of bad publicity about U2 and jokes like the one above, so I did not know what exactly to expect.
We have arrived at STN airport well ahead of our scheduled departure time.
Ryanair aircraft with the Boeing c/s manage to hide his nose behind whatever that black thing is.
Check in area C for EasyJet flights.
There was a long line for check in, but there was no one in the line for those, who have checked in online. We were done in less than 2 minutes. With EasyJet you can check in 60 days before your flight. You do not actually need to check in by clicking something, you just print boarding passes from your online reservation information page.
Airside.
Gate was published about an hour before departure and we have to take the train to the satellite terminal.
Gate 11 was our gate today.
G-EZDR – our aircraft today and the same aircraft I saw in Ljubljana a few days ago.
FR and U2 are the biggest airlines at STN.
Our crew.
Some EasyJet aircraft.
Boarding started exactly 30 minutes before departure. There was some fighting for a good position in the queue, as some queued before on the wrong side. We had speedy boarding so we were one of the first to board the plane.
Down the stairs to the apron.
View from the top of the stairs.
On board, young and friendly Anja from Slovenia offered us some exit row seats, but we decided to head to the back so that the wings would not obstruct our view.
U2 next door.
Anja told us, that the flight was completely full with every seat taken.
Push back was on time.
Soon we were cleared for takeoff.
Here are some picture from our journey to our cruising altitude.
Boarding pass for our flight.
U2 service. There were some options for a hot meal, but I ate at the airport so I wasn't hungry.
I listened to music for the remainder of the flight and almost fell to sleep.
The flight went by very quickly and we were soon over the alps approaching Slovenia.
We started our descend as we crossed Karavanke, here we are flying past Kranj.
Stožice football stadium and arena. I play football once a week in the white balloon at the top left of the picture
We flew past Dolsko and started our ILS approach to LJU.
Myair A320 that is supposed to fly for JP this summer.
AF flight to Paris CDG.
S5-AAH is no longer a part of JP fleet.
This was actually my first time flying into LJU with a different airline than JP. I have flown different airlines (U2,TP,BA) from VCE, but it was my first time landing in Ljubljana with a foreign airline.
The usual rush to get off the aircraft ASAP started.
A lot of packages for CRJ9.
It was a beautifully, sunny and warm day in Ljubljana.
My bag was not out yet.
PAX waiting to board U2 flight back to London.
Soon to head back to STN.
You have to go thought passport control when arriving from the UK.
The line looks long and chaotic, but it moved very quickly and I was through in less than five minutes.
Paparazzi photo – at the bottom right of the photo is ex Miss Slovenia, probably went to London to do some shopping.
The view as you enter the arrivals area.
Overview of the airport from the drive to the city.
Ljubljana and Jesenice, two biggest Slovenian hockey rivals.
So the EasyJet flight was great, crew was nice and friendly, aircraft was clean and comfortable, nothing to complain about. And if you follow their rule about only one piece of hand lugagge and buy checked bags (if you plan to have them) before arrival at the airport you shouldn't have any problems.
Adria flight was a standard one, nothing to say about them. CRJ9 is very nice aircraft, crew was very friendly, aircraft was clean, the flight was on time.
The Virgin train to London was a nice break from flying, it was comfortable and quick.
Singapore airlines are, based on my experience and other trip reports, one of the top airlines of the world. Compared to my JJ flight to GRU the cabin was more spacious (3-3-3 on SQ compared to 3-4-3 on JJ), legroom seemed better. I would love to try SQ on a long haul flight someday, if I will have a chance.

Hello Blaž,
this is definately an eye-opener into SQ's 5th freedom operations and a great showcase of their B77W product. Thanks for bringing it to us! Its always fun to ride a wide-body with PTVs on a shorthaul flight, how long was this particular flight?
Also, comparing with Planehunter's and fca767's TRs, its nice to know SQ do change their menu selections periodically. Were menus distributed for your flight as well?
Its nice to hear that though there had been a lapse in dishing out an empty tray, the stewardess managed a quick service recovery. Looking at that juicy kebab, I must say they do feed the C class passengers well.
I enjoyed the pictures, especially the pictures of the beautiful alps and its interesting to see the sleek executive design of JP's seats.
Thanks for the great report and quality pictures!
Cheers,
Gavin

What a way to travel intra-europe! Singapore Airlines can do no wrong!
Did you enjoy the Krisworld on the short flight?
So they served cold meal instead of hot ones? But well, it's just a short hop after all!!
I've never known that SQ has 5th freedom on this route. Maybe I should try it out next time I'm in MAN visiting my friend.
A short ride on SQ 77W to MUC is something nice to do as a side trip from the UK.
I wonder about the STAR GOLD lounge in MAN for MAN-MUC pax. Does BMI provide that for SQ in Terminal 2?
Thanks for the trip report on SQ and photos from Slovenia's capital airport! Seem like a good place to travel!
Don't be annoyed knowing the passengers around you are non-revs and op-upgraders, be grateful for them. Life is beautifu

I flew on that FR in the Boeing colours back in 2007 DUB-MAN.

Hello SloAir,
very good trip report, thank you very much for sharing this with us. I enjoyed reading about all of the three sectors, but of course especially about the SQ one. This MUC-MAN service is a very good opportunity to take a flight with them and I am looking at it for quite some time now, but did not manage to book it so far. Your report is the right reminder for me to finally tackle it again

Hi!
Thanks for the report, your photos are excellent Nice to see a report on this short SQ sector, as well as Adria. I'd fly the SQ route myself but it's usually a little out of my price range! Good to see the SQ service lived up to expectations though. Maybe I'll get to try Adria one day too. My to-do list gets longer.
Funnily enough, you arrived into Manchester just as I was departing - in fact, you can see my Flybe Dash 8-Q400 on stand being prepped for departure in your landing photos. It's a small world

Indeed, that's a great service. And the meal looked very good as well. SQ certainly is a great airline. What I don't like in their cabin though is the brownish color of the seats.

Hi SloAir,
What a great read. Being a MAN regular myself, this route on SQ is indeed very interesting and something I really should try. It seems it was well worth it, what excellent service you received onboard. 10/10 for the business meal that was brought when they ran of sandwiches.
As for easyJet, I've done many flights with them and with the exception of two cancellations due to snow, everything's always been great. You pictures on approach into LJU are simply breathtaking. I'm a sucker for mountains.
Wonder what that AB A330 was doing in MAN. Does anyone know?
Thanks for posting & happy flying

Yes, there was a menu already at my seat, probably left from the SIN-MUC flight, but the FAs went through the aircraft with menus before takeoff and offered them to those, who havevn't received one.
Quoting oa260 (Reply 2): Thanks for the nice report and photos.

Yes, there is not a lot of traffic at LJU, but it is interesting between 17:00-18:00, when there are a lot of arrivals and departures.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4): That looks a bit basic compared to the tasty sandwich I got on JP last year between VIE and FRA.
They still have sandwiches on longer flights (I do not think you are even able to finish eating a sandwich during cruise on such a short flight), JP sandwiches are always good in my opinion.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4): Weren't they allowed to leave the aircraft? I remember that all transit pax had to wait in the gate area last year.
It seemed not. I read in you're report that they had to, so I expected the gate area to be quite full, but there were no passengers to be seen from the SIN flight and I think it is almost impossible that they left the aircraft in such a short time.

Yes, that is their problem, it's hard to get fares under 200€ for a roundtrip. They did have a 50% off promotion this year in light of their 50 anniversary and I hope they will do some more similar actions.

= I am not the hugest fan of SQ on A.Net as I feel there service quality has fallen in the past ten years ... but there are times when SQ can be just old-excellent SQ. This simple gesture reminded me of why they remain as one of the best in the world. In most carriers, the crew would have just ignored your friend - including in J-cabin. This is a small gesture with tremendous value and if you have the name or where you were seated, write to SQ a small note. Management takes feedback seriously there.

Thank you for the tip, I might as well do that. On another note - when I flew TAM 77W GRU-FRA, there were three options for dinner in economy (chicken, beef and pasta). But by the time the FA arrived at our row (over the wing in the first section of economy), only pasta was left, so he just threw the dinner plate at my table without any explanation or apology. I'm not saying that JJ is a bad airline, I have enjoyed all my flights with them, but I would at least expect an explanation 'Sorry, there is only pasta left'.
Quoting N949WP (Reply 20): It just illustrates how far and wide these birds go, and the hours and miles they rack up.
It also did a SIN-NRT-SIN roundtrip after your flight and before it flew to MUC to pick me up according to libhomeradar. It really is amazing where this airplanes travel. After my long haul trips I usualy search the photo database for the aircraft I flew on to see what parts of the world they have visited.
Quoting N949WP (Reply 20): Nice to know that I've crossed paths with a fellow a.netter via the same aircraft, albeit with a 4-day gap!!
DanTaylor2006 departed from MAN the same day that I arrived, you flew on the same aircraft just days before, it looks like a lot of a.netters were involved in this trip somehow
