What is fifth freedom? I read a great explanation on this forum that went something like this: It is a great way for aviation enthusiast to try exotic airlines without the need to travel to their home country.

And since I do not have any plans to travel to Singapore anytime in the future, their MUC-MAN service is a great opportunity to try an airline, which is considerate to be one of the world’s best.

I manage to convince some friends and family that this is a great thing for a weekend trip. Munich is close to Ljubljana (only about 4 hours by car), but of course we decided to fly there, spend the night and go to Manchester with SQ the next day, then taking a train down to London and flying with EasyJet on the way back.

There are already at least two great reports about this flight, which I have read:

Guernsey, Ash Cloud Alarm & Mostly Empty SQ 77Ws (by PlaneHunter Sep 26 2010 in Trip Reports)
Manchester - Munich (Singapore Airlines) (by fca767 May 16 2010 in Trip Reports)

I have already done a trip report on the JP LJU-MUC route with the CRJ9, but I will post some different pictures from the once you have already seen on this leg.

After a quick check-in (there was no line in the terminal) we went to the visitors terrace next to the terminal building.

The view of the aircraft parked at the terminal gates is not that great, but it is better than nothing.

Boarding started at 18:10 for the 18:30 flight.

Quick bus ride and we stopped in front of S5-AAL, the scheduled CRJ9.

Nice view of the aircraft.

We started on time and my favorite sound of the engines starting up filled the cabin. Quick taxi and we were on our way!

The 'meal' is still the same as it was in August, only the water provider changed.

Last row is without a window – a note to those, who prefer to sit in the back row, I would recommend row 21 on JP CRJ900.

The weather started to get worse. It was a great and sunny day in Ljubljana, but in Munich it was raining.

http://www.shrani.si/f/L/P1/1UCbJXBw/s20.jpg

We landed after a very short flight time of 50 minutes.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1n/gt/2Jx3cHx3/s21.jpg

I have never gone to the baggage claim area in MUC, despite I have been here multiple times.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3z/RW/Jtqn4ah/s22.jpg

It is nice and spacious, I do not think there are a lot of PAX that go down here, as most of them are transiting.

http://www.shrani.si/f/J/o2/1El8AaTg/s23.jpg

And in exactly 5 minutes bags started to roll out on the conveyor belt.

http://www.shrani.si/f/26/2A/19t6e2mt/s24.jpg

After dinner at the airport we spent the rest of the evening at the visitor’s terrace, it is opened until 22:00.

Next: Singapore Airlines!

This will be my 6th Boeing 777 flight and 3rd B777-300ER flight. I have done a FRA-GRU-FRA roundtrip with TAM a few years ago.

A very early wake up call, but I was excited about my flight so I did not care too much. Check in area was empty, we checked in at the first class counter.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2p/CF/iFWJxVv/s26.jpg

Singapore airlines boarding pass! I was getting more and more excited.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1l/pF/171mclKY/s27.jpg

The flight from SIN was supposed to arrive late, but actually it was on time.

Here it is after a long flight from Singapore.

B77W, great aircraft.

http://www.shrani.si/f/a/xU/1DY1LUIJ/s30.jpg

A346 is still my favorite wide body though.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3k/Lh/44HYHv6n/s31.jpg

It is impressing how quick such a big aircraft is turned around. Less than an hour and it was on it's way again.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3t/GD/1iCWJoT4/s32.jpg

Our crew. I do not remember seeing famous Singapore girls live before.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3Y/pb/IF15Pyw/s33.jpg

Boarding. Only around 20 passengers boarded the flight.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1w/Li/3Wsr3mLk/s34.jpg

Blurry, sorry.

…through the jetway…

http://www.shrani.si/f/2x/XT/2lwYY1tV/s37.jpg

…and onto Singapore airlines B777-300ER! The reason we took this trip in the first place. There were only two passengers in business class.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2I/6A/2JW0IggY/s38.jpg

The seat width is just amazing.

http://www.shrani.si/f/G/BV/3D2ZR5sg/s39.jpg

It looks so calm and fresh. I walked thought the business class cabin and entered the first economy section…

http://www.shrani.si/f/1N/1u/1JECaAx0/s40.jpg

…and there was a lot of PAX from the flight from Singapore already onboard. They looked tired, sleepy, weak,… What was for me a beginning of a great flight was for them another leg in their journey to their final destination. They have already been on this aircraft when I was waiting for boarding the other day in Ljubljana.

http://www.shrani.si/f/24/CT/4tKLy2n7/s41.jpg

My seat, a pillow and a blanket were already waiting for me. First impression was very good.

Two options for breakfast today – pastries or cheese, ham and egg sandwich. I went with the first.

Sandwich:

Cup holder is another nice feature.

My friend ordered the sandwich, but was given an empty plate with no explanation.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1J/VV/4DZjLwhX/s55.jpg

I thought that this will be a -1 point for SQ service, but the FA came back soon, apologized because they had no more sandwiches and brought a meal from business class. +1 for SQ. She came back before descent and asked if the meal was ok. +2  http://www.shrani.si/f/2N/Kk/2mYLmGgN/s56.jpg

One last look of our aircraft.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1K/vk/3WhefsMq/s74.jpg

United. Or is it Continental? Must be confusing for those, who do not know a lot about aviation.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1a/Oc/1Y0cMiKQ/s75.jpg

I had the highest expectations from Singapore Airlines and they did not disappoint me. From what I have experience on this flight and read in other trip reports they are a great airline and I would not mind flying with them all the way to Singapore and beyond. I hope I will get that chance one day and if SQ will be an option on any of my future routes I will probably choose to fly with them.

Now that we were in Manchester we had to get to London somehow. We decided to try the Virgin Trains Pendolino. I'm sure they are some ferroequinologists among aviation enthusiasts, so I will post a few pictures from our train ride. Here is our train:

http://www.shrani.si/f/1J/T0/4xPtHGSr/s76.jpg

Not a lot of stops, most of them are very near to Manchester.

http://www.shrani.si/f/14/Do/49ChiWIW/s77.jpg

Coach K for us today.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2G/yB/1A0Jg0RY/s78.jpg

When I was looking for fares on Virgin website I actually found a first class fare that was cheaper than an economy class ticket on the same train. I decided to take a chance and booked it, e-tickets arrived a few hours later, printed them and had no problems on the journey. Very simple and efficient.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1f/KJ/ZJKoef9/s79.jpg

Coach K is the first (or last) coach of the train and no other passengers joined us, so we had the whole coach for ourselves.

http://www.shrani.si/f/8/gY/1Ll4gCuY/s80.jpg

The ride is quick, it only takes a little over 2 hours.

http://www.shrani.si/f/F/th/3kxkw8Qg/s81.jpg

And soon we arrived at London Euston station.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3W/Jn/2pP6jVXD/s82.jpg

This sure is a great way to get from Manchester to London.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1k/AH/48ql2IOb/s83.jpg

Long taxi queue, but it did not take more than five minutes to get a typical London black cab.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3y/Q5/XXRO4E4/s84.jpg

After two nice days in London it was time to go back home with EasyJet.

A guy sitting at a bar at Heathrow noticed a really beautiful woman sitting next to him.
He thought to himself: "Wow, she's so gorgeous she must be an off duty flight attendant. But which airline does she work for?"
Hoping to pick her up, he leaned towards her and uttered the Delta slogan:
"Love to fly and it shows?"
She gave him a blank, confused stare and he immediately thought to himself:
"Damn, she doesn't work for Delta."
A moment later, another slogan popped into his head.
He leaned towards her again,
"Something special in the air?"
She gave him the same confused look.
He mentally kicked himself, and scratched Singapore Airlines off the list.
Next he tried the Thai Airways slogan:
"Smooth as Silk."
This time the woman turned on him,
"What the fuck do you want?"
The man smiled, then slumped back in his chair, and said
"Ahhhhh, EasyJet".

I have flown EasyJet twice before – VCE-LGW and BRS-VCE and both flights were very nice in my opinion, the crew was friendly, the aircraft was ok, nothing to complain about. Since then I have read a lot of bad publicity about U2 and jokes like the one above, so I did not know what exactly to expect.

We have arrived at STN airport well ahead of our scheduled departure time.

http://www.shrani.si/f/Y/2Z/1HnlgIBw/s87.jpg

There was a long line for check in, but there was no one in the line for those, who have checked in online. We were done in less than 2 minutes. With EasyJet you can check in 60 days before your flight. You do not actually need to check in by clicking something, you just print boarding passes from your online reservation information page.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3t/11h/1sZWkW8c/s152.jpg

So the EasyJet flight was great, crew was nice and friendly, aircraft was clean and comfortable, nothing to complain about. And if you follow their rule about only one piece of hand lugagge and buy checked bags (if you plan to have them) before arrival at the airport you shouldn't have any problems.

Adria flight was a standard one, nothing to say about them. CRJ9 is very nice aircraft, crew was very friendly, aircraft was clean, the flight was on time.

The Virgin train to London was a nice break from flying, it was comfortable and quick.

Singapore airlines are, based on my experience and other trip reports, one of the top airlines of the world. Compared to my JJ flight to GRU the cabin was more spacious (3-3-3 on SQ compared to 3-4-3 on JJ), legroom seemed better. I would love to try SQ on a long haul flight someday, if I will have a chance.

Thank you for reading,
Blaž

Hello Blaž,

this is definately an eye-opener into SQ's 5th freedom operations and a great showcase of their B77W product. Thanks for bringing it to us! Its always fun to ride a wide-body with PTVs on a shorthaul flight, how long was this particular flight?

Also, comparing with Planehunter's and fca767's TRs, its nice to know SQ do change their menu selections periodically. Were menus distributed for your flight as well?

Its nice to hear that though there had been a lapse in dishing out an empty tray, the stewardess managed a quick service recovery. Looking at that juicy kebab, I must say they do feed the C class passengers well.

I enjoyed the pictures, especially the pictures of the beautiful alps and its interesting to see the sleek executive design of JP's seats.

Thanks for the great report and quality pictures!

Cheers,
Gavin

Hey very nice report. Nice mix of airlines too. Always had a good view of JP , nice small airline.

As for SQ very nice also and kudos to the FA for exceeding expectations with the meal .

Thanks for the nice report and photos.

What a way to travel intra-europe! Singapore Airlines can do no wrong!
Did you enjoy the Krisworld on the short flight?
So they served cold meal instead of hot ones? But well, it's just a short hop after all!!

I've never known that SQ has 5th freedom on this route. Maybe I should try it out next time I'm in MAN visiting my friend.
A short ride on SQ 77W to MUC is something nice to do as a side trip from the UK.
I wonder about the STAR GOLD lounge in MAN for MAN-MUC pax. Does BMI provide that for SQ in Terminal 2?

Thanks for the trip report on SQ and photos from Slovenia's capital airport! Seem like a good place to travel!

Let's just blame it on yields.

Hi Blaž,

great report with nice pictures! Good to see you also enjoyed SQ between MUC and MAN.

After a quick check-in (there was no line in the terminal) we went to the visitors terrace next to the terminal building.

Nice facility, but I guess it can get boring there after a while.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The 'meal' is still the same as it was in August, only the water provider changed.

That looks a bit basic compared to the tasty sandwich I got on JP last year between VIE and FRA.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Last row is without a window – a note to those, who prefer to sit in the back row, I would recommend row 21 on JP CRJ900.

Good to know!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
They looked tired, sleepy, weak,… What was for me a beginning of a great flight was for them another leg in their journey to their final destination. They have already been on this aircraft when I was waiting for boarding the other day in Ljubljana.

Weren't they allowed to leave the aircraft? I remember that all transit pax had to wait in the gate area last year.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Two options for breakfast today – pastries or cheese, ham and egg sandwich. I went with the first.

Looks good!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I thought that this will be a -1 point for SQ service, but the FA came back soon, apologized because they had no more sandwiches and brought a meal from business class. +1 for SQ. She came back before descent and asked if the meal was ok. +2

Very nice service!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):

Good one! But you should replace easyJet with Ryanair...

A nice little trip you did. Your photos arriving into LJU were really nice. I flew JP LGW-LJU-MUC back in 2002 - back then they used an A320 on the MUC route.

I flew on that FR in the Boeing colours back in 2007 DUB-MAN.

Hello SloAir,

very good trip report, thank you very much for sharing this with us. I enjoyed reading about all of the three sectors, but of course especially about the SQ one. This MUC-MAN service is a very good opportunity to take a flight with them and I am looking at it for quite some time now, but did not manage to book it so far. Your report is the right reminder for me to finally tackle it again

Very nice approach pics of LJU airport aswell!

Hi!

Thanks for the report, your photos are excellent   Nice to see a report on this short SQ sector, as well as Adria. I'd fly the SQ route myself but it's usually a little out of my price range! Good to see the SQ service lived up to expectations though. Maybe I'll get to try Adria one day too. My to-do list gets longer.

Funnily enough, you arrived into Manchester just as I was departing - in fact, you can see my Flybe Dash 8-Q400 on stand being prepped for departure in your landing photos. It's a small world

Thanks again!

Indeed, that's a great service. And the meal looked very good as well. SQ certainly is a great airline. What I don't like in their cabin though is the brownish color of the seats.

The flight went by very quickly and we were soon over the alps approaching Slovenia.

Always a pleasure to cross the Alps. Very nice pictures, these red fittings under the wing and the winglet sure makes your pictures much more interesting. Also nice ones from the approach to LJU.

Hi Blaž,

Very nice report on SQ with numerous good pictures. This route is very popular amongst our frequent flyers here, too bad the price is quite steep in my opinion. I would like to fly it someday, but then the other way around, from MAN to MUC.
Also very nice pictures of you EZY flight to LJU, the mountains look stunning in sunny weather!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
There was some fighting for a good position in the queue

Oh my that's bad, why do such situations only occur with the LCC's? I mean, there's room for everybody...

Thanks again,

Hi SloAir,

What a great read. Being a MAN regular myself, this route on SQ is indeed very interesting and something I really should try. It seems it was well worth it, what excellent service you received onboard. 10/10 for the business meal that was brought when they ran of sandwiches.

As for easyJet, I've done many flights with them and with the exception of two cancellations due to snow, everything's always been great. You pictures on approach into LJU are simply breathtaking. I'm a sucker for mountains.

Wonder what that AB A330 was doing in MAN. Does anyone know?

Thanks for posting & happy flying

Yes, there is not a lot of traffic at LJU, but it is interesting between 17:00-18:00, when there are a lot of arrivals and departures.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4):
That looks a bit basic compared to the tasty sandwich I got on JP last year between VIE and FRA.

They still have sandwiches on longer flights (I do not think you are even able to finish eating a sandwich during cruise on such a short flight), JP sandwiches are always good in my opinion.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4):
Weren't they allowed to leave the aircraft? I remember that all transit pax had to wait in the gate area last year.

It seemed not. I read in you're report that they had to, so I expected the gate area to be quite full, but there were no passengers to be seen from the SIN flight and I think it is almost impossible that they left the aircraft in such a short time.

Excellent trip report SloAir ...I really enjoyed ....I know that the topic is Singapore Airlines, but ...hehehe

Adria Airways is my first love and still has a special place in my heart... first flight ... first flight with propeller plane ( DHC-7 ) ... My shortest flight (ZAG-LJU) ... the weirdest experience ( only passenger in the MD-82 ) ... my first FF ... and so on on on ...and that is why I always glad to see the JP report ... and of course LJU airport ...

Definitely ... Ljubljana is perfect for a city break ... very beautiful ... cozy ... with lots of greenery and urban areas ... close to the natural beauty of Postojna caves or lakes Bled and Bohinj ...

Thanks again SloAir ... Lep pozdrav Stipica

I would love to fly Adria Airways but there fares always seem to be so expensive. That is really kool that Ljubljana airport has such a nice viewing area.

The picture that you took of the logo is very nice as well. HAHA and that story with the man and the flight attendant is hilarious.

Hope to see some more reports soon!

Yes, that is their problem, it's hard to get fares under 200€ for a roundtrip. They did have a 50% off promotion this year in light of their 50 anniversary and I hope they will do some more similar actions.

= I am not the hugest fan of SQ on A.Net as I feel there service quality has fallen in the past ten years ... but there are times when SQ can be just old-excellent SQ. This simple gesture reminded me of why they remain as one of the best in the world. In most carriers, the crew would have just ignored your friend - including in J-cabin. This is a small gesture with tremendous value and if you have the name or where you were seated, write to SQ a small note. Management takes feedback seriously there.

Thanks again for writing this report.

I flew on 9V-SWF (in seat 46A) exactly 4 days before you!! She did the SIN-HKG-SFO-HKG-SIN run during March 28-30, and I was on the SIN-HKG sector. It just illustrates how far and wide these birds go, and the hours and miles they rack up.

Nice to know that I've crossed paths with a fellow a.netter via the same aircraft, albeit with a 4-day gap!!

Thank you for the tip, I might as well do that. On another note - when I flew TAM 77W GRU-FRA, there were three options for dinner in economy (chicken, beef and pasta). But by the time the FA arrived at our row (over the wing in the first section of economy), only pasta was left, so he just threw the dinner plate at my table without any explanation or apology. I'm not saying that JJ is a bad airline, I have enjoyed all my flights with them, but I would at least expect an explanation 'Sorry, there is only pasta left'.

It also did a SIN-NRT-SIN roundtrip after your flight and before it flew to MUC to pick me up according to libhomeradar. It really is amazing where this airplanes travel. After my long haul trips I usualy search the photo database for the aircraft I flew on to see what parts of the world they have visited.
