Easter Get Away Part I: ZRH-LCY With BA In Y

In January 2011 I decided to try Air Malta’s Business Class product and flew from Zurich to Malta on Air Malta in C-Class. I wrote a trip report about that journey as well.

I was rather impressed by what such a small airline like Air Malta had to offer. However I was also a bit disappointed because on the Zurich-Malta route Air Malta does not serve a hot meal in Business Class due to the flying time of only 2h20. So I decided to book another trip with them, this time from London Heathrow to Malta and back. I figured a flying time of over three hours would be enough to secure the hot meal.

But of course I still needed to get to and from Heathrow. So I booked myself an open jaw from Zurich to London City to try and then a Heathrow to Basel. A flight from Zurich to City was chosen intentionally to try out the Embraer 190, a type I’d never been on previously.

This report covers the segment from Zurich to London City in Economy Class. Enjoy!

I left early from work on Maundy Thursday and took the train to Zurich airport, as usual. The train was pretty empty. Zurich airport’s railway station is connected to the national and international railway system of Switzerland and offers connections to most cities in the country.

When I arrived at the airport I was surprised to see that there were quite a lot of people around. Presumably they had the same idea and decided to take advantage of the lovely weather in Europe and make the best of the long Easter weekend.

Check-in for BA is in what used to be Terminal B, which is now Check-in 2. As flights to the UK are outside the Schengen area, all BA flights depart from the E Dock, accessible by the automatic Skymetro. I was quite looking forward to this flight. First of all, because it had been quite a while since my last trip from the E Dock, secondly because I was curious about the Embraer 190 and thirdly, because it’s been ages since I last flew with BA.

Gate E 68, the only gate at Zurich airport that allows for boarding of the A380 on two levels.

In any case, I definitely like the Embraer 190. It’s so spacious and those huge windows are just brilliant.

One thing that struck me a bit strange about this flight was that there were Business Class passengers. I saw the FA dishing out the trays. But there were not more than two or three rows of Business Class on this flight. But the cabin divider was positioned somewhere around row 9. To be honest I’m not sure if they simply forgot to move the divider or if they simply could not be bothered. All in all the crew were okay, but not excessively enthusiastic about their job either.

This concludes the first part of my Easter trip to Malta. I did not take any pics of the Heathrow to Malta segment. So the next report will be of the Malta-Heathrow journey.

That's just poor catering.. no excuse for that! My ZRH-LCY flight on LX last week got served a roll.

My pleasure, thanks for replying. I have to say, I fly LX most of the time and very often I complain about their service. But then you fly on some other carrier and you realise they ain't that bad after all. Still, I would love to try BA's premium product some day.

The speedbrakes remain open so the the aircraft can have a stabilized approach at the deeper angle of 5.5 degrees that is required on LCY

Hi LX138, I'd say the load was pretty much 100% or close to that. But it may have had something to do with it being the long Easter weekend. My flight was on Maundy Thursday. Emirates even operated an additional service from Zurich to Dubai with a B. 777 that day!
