Takeoff Aborted On Continental (Video Trip Log)

This is my Video Trip Report (with minute by minute annotations) on my flight from New York's LaGuardia to Cleveland on an Continental ERJ145. I was in New York in summer to watch the World Cup Quarter Finals and was making my trip back to Cleveland. The trip log includes the aborted takeoff along with the complete flight thereafter. It will take you thru an unsettling experience of getting back onto the same aircraft that just had some engine issue and failed its takeoff first time around!! Good video log! Looks like an eventful trip to Cleveland! Never been on an airplane that has aborted its takeoff; I was on an ERJ-145 from MSP-EWR back in April '09 that did a "go around" at landing because the airplane in front took too long on the runway ... that was an interesting experience. Before the explanation from the flight deck, it was definitely quite a shock.

God I love the sound of the ERJ. Such a great aircraft. Scary event but better to find out on the ground than in the air.

Interesting video, if you notice the fire truck standing by during takeoff from LGA, this is local Port Auth policy, when ever a flight aborts takeoff, if the same flight departs later on with the same aircraft which was the case here then 2 Fire Trucks standby for the second (or once in a while) third takeoff. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks!! I could not see the fire truck...if you should you go to that video again can you tell me the time on that video - I would love to add that fact to the annotations - interesting!!

Great video. It reminded of an experience I had once on a DL L1011. We didn't do the aborted takeoff bit, but we did some engine runs on the tarmac with a mechanic on board. It was pretty cool to listen to the engines spooling up and down while the plane creaked and groaned against the brakes.


Why are people so against low yields?! If lower yields means more people can travel abroad, i'm all for it

...I wish they changed the planes and not put us all in the same one. I wonder if anyone knows of any incidents where there was an issue with an aircraft prior to take off and then it crashed subsequently (problems with its engines or something related) and then took off and crashed?

I would be so curious to know, I dont think I can Google it and find a result but what are the chances of such an incident like this happening or does anyone know of any such crash?

wow rohanghosh that was a great video. I don't think I would have got back on that aircraft. I think I would have ate the cost of the flight and paid for a different flight on a different airline. That was crazy seeing them going in circles and call it a test run. I'm glad you made back safely..

Its a weird feeling. When I saw them doing circles on the ground I went up to the counter and see if I could another flight but being Sunday they only had that flight out and I was too .... "timid" may be the right word to voice my feelings and tell them otherwise. Also, they do not have too many flight out from LaGuardia to Cleveland post Sunday afternoons.

People often say "oh, if you dont like it then go change the flight and take another".. in reality, it is not that simple to "just cancel your flight and just take another one" ...and everyone should experience this once before they post comments or tell me that.

Very interesting video! I've been on one aborted takeoff, DL CRJ from SWF-ATL. We turned on to Runway 27 and began barreling down, when the engines suddenly went silent and we rolled to the next taxiway. I said to my kids, "Hmmm, that's never a good sign!"

The surprising issue for me was that we returned to the terminal to top off the fuel load. Those few seconds on the takeoff roll had used up too much fuel for this particular flight.

On another trip, a NW CRJ from DTW-SWF, we went out to the runway three times until we finally took off. Each time there another maintenance issue. I was more annoyed than freaked because I had an important meeting that I was in danger of missing.

The flight that did freak me out a bit was many years ago on an AA DC-10 from LGA-BUF when the planes were brand new. The engines were spooled up for takeoff, but the brakes locked and we didn't budge. Return to terminal. Two hours later, same thing on the same runway. On the third try, we took off, but I was feeling a little helpless by then. (When I think about it now, I wonder how the brakes could lock on takeoff, but release for taxi).
