So looking on the BMI website I spotted a great fare and then using my BMI Gold card upgrades I paid Y and would travel in J. I had planned to visit Jordan sometime but not this soon and not this short. I had two days off and just a few thousand miles short for Gold renewal so my mind was made up. I have a good friend in Amman who is also a pilot for RJ so I emailed him and it was decided we would meet for dinner during my very short ''transit'' there.

The morning came and I took the bus to the airport as usual. I had checked in online so I could just go through security.

A nice sunny morning .

I decided to have a nice proper coffee at the Chocolate lounge :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BDAMM/012_800x600.jpg

Then I took a look at the nice retro EI logo wear. The T shirts are only EUR10 not bad at all.

Then time to head to Terminal 1 and the BMI lounge.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BDAMM/025_800x600.jpg

After spotting the Reg I wondered if it was the new cabin interior ( and a quick mention to Jamesontheroad Anetter and Ftalker for his thread on BMI's refurbished aircraft ) I saw that it was a new interior so was pleased even before boarding.

As I entered the cabin I was greeted with a warm smile and directed to my seat. I was impressed the first look at this new design.

I spotted the Aer Lingus retro jet which was nice to see.

We waited for a US Airways B757 to land before taking off.

Shortly after take off the free snack service started. I dont like the bacon bap so decided to try the mushroom and cheese choice instead. Now it was nice but nothing amazing. BMI could improve this without too much effort. Still the service by the crew was efficient and friendly. The Male FA even greeted me by my name which was a nice touch.

Soon it was time to land and disembark the aircraft. A last view of the new seats with extra width in Flex Y.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BDAMM/062_800x600.jpg

I headed to arrivals and proceeded to get my onward boarding pass.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BDAMM/066_800x600.jpg

After that I wanted to buy a special edition oyster card celebrating the Royal Wedding so I proceeded to the London Underground office. I have been meaning to buy this Oyster card for ages so this was a good excuse. It saves alot of money whilst using the Tube.

Then I headed back to security and made my way to the International BMI lounge.

I made my way to the visa desk and was met by a guy from the Tulip Hotel who assured me I would not need to buy a visa. He marched me to the top of the Jordanian nationals que had a word with the immigration officer who stamped my passport and waved me through. The whole process took only a few minutes and I was very grateful as I was due to meet my friend. I decided to jump into a taxi for 5 Dinars and it was only 5 mins to the hotel. On arrival the hotel has an Xray you have to go through and your bags are scanned. I noticed alot of RJ transit passengers from India and Africa, I think RJ gives free hotel for their transit passengers. The hotel is in the middle of a complete renovation but it didnt bother me. I checked in and went to the room. The room was a renovated one so I was pleased.

Just then my friend called me and said he would be five minutes so I made my way to meet him . We had a nice meal and a good chat. I noticed the TK crew were staying over also. So I stayed up quite late and was very tired so soon it was time for me to get a few hours sleep as it was a very early start the next morning.

I slept on and off for the rest of the flight. I also had a chat with two of the crew about the Royal Wedding that morning. The pilot came over the PA advising that our approach would sadly not take us over central London but it was cloudy anyway so even if we had we wouldnt see the crowds on the mall.

One last drink before landing

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BDAMM/365_800x600.jpg

Soon we made our decent into LHR and the crew made the cabin ready .

The lovely couple. The nice thing was that the staff in the lounge, cook, cleaners and passengers were all sitting around the TV sharing this moment. It really was a nice thing.

So thats the end of my report. I hope you all enjoyed it. I did although I was very tired after. BMI were good and I couldnt fault them. The onboard catering has improved and they are moving in the right direction. They just need their pre travel and reservations experience to improve although this time even the process to upgrade via the reservations call center was hassle free. The cabin was clean and seats comfortable and I look forward to seeing the new Midhaul cabin in person soon.

Lastly I cant finish without sharing one of my favourite Arabic sweets :

Mamoul .

Please leave your comments and feedback as usual and many thanks for reading. I have an invite back to Jordan so hope next time to see the country rather then just the airport areas.

Hey Philip,

Fab report as usual. I was going to post that the airport was BHX but Shamrock604 beat me to it! BMI look pretty good on this run. I've been tempted to try one of their mid-hauls myself and this has made me more determined to do so. Maybe I can join you on one of your future trips to AMM. I loved the pics of the aircraft graveyard. I remember how impressive it was when we were there before.

I went for the Lamb which was a good choice and really good quality it fell apart as you ate it.

Looks pretty decent. I told you BD have improved their catering. I will admit it's still not Swiss though.

When is this new Terminal opening ? Not much seems to have happened since I last saw it.

Its been a mini-saga.

from what I gather the Cypriot group which had won the tender for the $750mil terminal started turning all types of additional bills claiming added work was needed. The Jordanian government got upset and things slowed to a crawl. In addition then there was some further issues with the partial 10% stake the Cypriot group also had purchased in the consortium that was to run the terminal for 25-years.

The opening was originally planned as 2010 when the contract was awarded in 2007, then got slipped to to early 2011, and now they say early 2012 being the target. Insallah.....

Yes although the menu could have local dishes of the destination country and things with a bit more spice to them. The Arabic mixed grill on the return was ideal and its good to see. When serving such countries you need to cater to the locals and not just bland food. I would like to see Morrocan chicken with couscous or something like that for Lunch/Dinner.

Thats interesting . Hope they can get it finally opened. I read an article that RJ is finding it hard to compete with regional carriers. I guess the transit experience is not the greatest and the new terminal will make a big difference to their plans. The old terminal is quite old and not big enough. Although nothing to complain about it certainly needs a new facility.

A lovely trip report and I am happy to read about bmi's "regional long haul" service! The new Airbus cabin looks nice.
The new amenity kit and cosmetic box look excellent.

But I am surprised that no second snack/light refreshment service is served prior to arrival on the morning flight. It will be nice to have a cheese plate or a dessert place prior to arrival!

Thanks for sharing!

Hi, Phil,

now that´s what I call a short night in between two interesting flights and also a pretty good joice to do this
mileage run for Jordan.

Superb pictures and also story, well done.

Such a number of oldfasioned planes there, unbelievable, I should go there also!.

Greetings,

Great report

Nice to see some more pictures of the RJ lounge in Amman! I really need to get back to Jordan, I had a great time there several years ago. It's a lovely country!

I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

Hi Philip!

That is such funny timing for your trip - I missed you in Amman by a few hours. I spent the week before the wedding enjoying the deserts and ruins of Jordan (wonderful place btw), and only flew back on the 28th (on the RJ service to LHR). Hopefully I'll have my report up here soon.

Looks like BD's service is still ok, nothing too amazing. Shame you didn't get a refurbished aircraft on the AMM sector - the old cabins really aren't great.

For sure lots of interesting ways to get to AMM

Sounds like fun.
Quoting oa260 (Reply 9):
Yes although the menu could have local dishes of the destination country and things with a bit more spice to them. The Arabic mixed grill on the return was ideal and its good to see. When serving such countries you need to cater to the locals and not just bland food. I would like to see Morrocan chicken with couscous or something like that for Lunch/Dinner.

Can't argue with that. I do find that carriers tend to stick more with cuisine more from their home country than the destinations they are serving though. That said, BD fly to so many "Eastern" countries that some more exotic food would probably go down quite well with their passengers.

Quoting oa260 (Reply 9):
Haha Im taking the rest to work to get them out of my way otherwise I will eat them all. They are very tasty.

Sounds like a sensible idea. Don't want to muck up the diet!

According to one of my colleagues, my problem is that I'm addicted to travel!

How nice to see the beaming smile of King Hussein in your report, not only once on the twenty dinar note but in a photograph at Queen Alia. I assume that is his son, King Abdullah II in the photo next to him as his face isn't clear.

Have you visited Jordan previously? I ask because it was such a short trip although you were planning on meeting a friend. It is a fascinating country and a very welcoming one.

It is good to see that BMI offered a high level of service and in reasonable comfort.

The photos from the "graveyard" are intriguing. What happens to all those aircraft? Does Jordon have a thriving trade in used parts, cannibalising aircraft as the need arises?

Great report and thanks for sharing it with us.

Best wishes,
Quokka

After spotting the Reg I wondered if it was the new cabin interior ( and a quick mention to Jamesontheroad Anetter and Ftalker for his thread on BMI's refurbished aircraft ) I saw that it was a new interior so was pleased even before boarding.

You're welcome! If anyone unfamiliar with BMI is reading this, the thread is here:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/bmi-d...ivery-interiors-work-progress.html

The BMI Diamond Club community on FlyerTalk will continue to keep this as up to date as we can over the coming weeks and months; there are various refurbishment and reconfiguration programmes on-going with the short, mid and long haul fleets throughout 2011. Hopefully by next year the fleet will be consistent - or at least for a few months before the rumoured lie-flat seats replace the old BA seats in mid-haul business.

Twenty Dinars for my visa on arrival :

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but you included this photo alongside the Miller Harris amenity kits. I presume they were your dinars, or do BD provide this currency as a courtesy to passengers in C?

Hi Philip,

What a great idea to combine a mileage run and meeting up a good friend.

I can understand that you do not mind having a long layover in BMI LHR T1 lounge every time. At an airport like LHR, you can successfully do plane spotting from the lounge serenity.

That's Amharic written in the Ge'ez script, as the flight continues on to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.

Another good one. Great to see that there are still people doing turnarounds for the pleasure of flying, I have done a couple so far this year to Berlin, so I do not feel that lonely when flying around.

I like the food on your flight to AMM. It looks delicious and really well presented. the on board product looks very nice, would not mind trying it one day although BMI does not fly to BCN, they used ti have flights from Birmingham on BMIBaby but I think they stopped flying the route some summers ago.

I like the new seats on the first p'lane, they look sharp and the dark color gives them a distinctive touch, I am a little tired of the grey seats you get on most planes.

Thanks and keep the coming,

Roger

Hi Phil,

thanks for an extensive and informative report!

The unidentified airport is BHX - but you already know that now

A pity you had such a short visit, as you usually take some very nice destination pics!

Do you know if either AMM flight continued on to or came from ADD? I'm looking at a complex routing from JNB and an ET/BD via ADD and AMM is coming up as a possibility (in Y unfortuantely - C one day I hope!)

Thanks

I thought that too but surprisingly half the J cabin refused even one meal taking maybe just a cheese plate or just drinks. I took anything going lol... I think its so early and most people sleep. Im sure if you asked they would offer a sandwich from the back or snacks etc...

Im not sure I guess some have just been left there but maybe Im wrong but have some Iraqi Airways aircraft been moved? I seem to remember seeing more there which are in my TR above. Maybe they are parked somewhere else now.

Quoting jamesontheroad (Reply 17):

Hi James , yes keep the thread updated its really been a great resource. The 20 Dinars I bought from Amex Buraeu De Change in T1 they had an offer for Zero commission and I heard it speeds things up than trying to change money in AMM on arrival. Always good to have some local money and some Euro and USD . Just for tipps etc...

Quoting akhmad (Reply 18):
I can understand that you do not mind having a long layover in BMI LHR T1 lounge every time. At an airport like LHR, you can successfully do plane spotting from the lounge serenity.

Hey there many thanks for the comment. Yes I can easily kill a few hours laying on the bed and looking out its 5 star plane spotting LOL... They really did well with that lounge.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 18):

Very true and the Coffee was only EUR3 ! I will always stop there now in future before going to the lounges. I cant stand crap coffee.

Yes you must pay in Jordanian Dinars so I would advise to have some before travel.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 18):
third language?

As James said sometimes the aircraft goes onto ADD . A nice looking script though. Id love to go there oneday on ET.
I was told by the head FA that they work the LHR-ADD then do a few nights stop over as the crew coming back the next morning was different. Maybe they have another crew AMM-ADD-AMM. Our resident BMI crew member can probably shed more light .

Quoting akhmad (Reply 18):
