In December, we were supposed to go on a family vacation to New York, but the flight was cancelled due to the big snow storm. So we only did the LJU-ZRH-LJU part of the trip and had unused tickets left for the long haul flights. We decided to use the tickets to go to Montreal at the end of April. You can read the report on our cancelled flight on this link:
And since I already did a trip report on Adria business class on the Ljubljana-Zurich route, I will start this report with what we should have done in December – a train ride to the E gates, from where most, if not all, long haul flight from Zurich depart.
The E gates train station. You go through passport control before going on the train and you go through security check after you go off the train. Despite being the last passengers of the train (since I had to take a picture of the train station) and despite that most of long haul flights depart at around the same time we did not have to wait in line at the security line check, the agent just directed us to the next free station and we were done in less than a minute.
Our A330-300 for today's flight, HB-JHD.
The gates look great at Zurich airport.
Our aircraft was being prepared for another long haul flight.
'Bern' going to Delhi today. I was surprised when boarding was called for this flight, only two passengers got up and went through the gate, then some time nothing, then one by one PAX started to board, there was no line at any time.
Thai Airbus A340-600 HS-TNB
SQ A380 just finished boarding for its flight back to Singapore.
Interesting and usefull concept, on the left and right side of the gate there are First, Business and Economy sings, then when boarding starts the lights illuminate which side will be for premium and which for economy class passengers.
Qatar flight to Doha was also just finishing its boarding process.
Some other Swiss aircraft preparing for flights to the USA.
Another view of our aircraft from the Panorama lounge.
The Panorama lounge is ok, but I think that the one at the A gates is better. But you do have better views outside here.
Helvetic.
Departing for Doha.
Between 12:45 and 13:30 Swiss has flights to Delhi, Muscat, Dubai, Montreal, Shanghai, New York JFK, Tokyo NRT, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Bangkok.
The Emirates lounge.
United B767 going to Washington.
Singapore was also ready to depart.
Meanwhile downstairs there was a passport control booth set up in front of the gate.
And around 10-15 minutes before boarding was scheduled, there was an announcement for some PAX to contact the gate and everyone got up and formed a line. The announcements are hard to hear and understand as the sound is not that great here.
Boarding started on time – 12:20 for the 12:50 flight. When I got to passport control the agent had to check if Slovenian citizens need visa, but he quickly found out that we do not need anything and wished me a pleasant flight.
Down the hill and into the jetway.
Almost there.
I was really looking forward to this trip so after months of waiting here I am, boarding for my 5th A330-300 flight.
I was seated in 11K in the second business class cabin. The first one only has two rows of seats.
Refreshing tissues placed on the table next to the seat.
Headphones and amenity kit in the storage compartment on the right side of the seat.
Outside, another LX A333 was preparing for its trip. It pushed backed just moments before us.
Every seat has its own coat hanger.
Swiss business menu and an (already empty) glass of orange juice.
Push back was on time, but we had to wait for about 10 minutes before we could take off. The captain made an announcement (in German, French and English) informing us we will take off from runway 32 in about 4 minutes.
And as promised by the pilot, in 4 minutes we started our take off roll.
Next stop: Montreal!
Swiss news and information.
I wanted to watch the airshow, but I wasn't able to start it. So I asked the FA, when she came by, if the airshow will be on for today's flight. She said that it is working and tried to select it, but was unable to do it. She went to check and came back with some sad news - the airshow would not be working on today's flight. Too bad as it is my favorite source of entertainment on board. Shortly after, there was a message displayed on the IFE screens that unfortunately, the airshow was out of order for this flight.
Seat controls.
Still flying over Europe, the meal service is about to begin.
It started with some cashews.
Followed by an appetizer and salad.
And the main course, Roasted fillet of beef, morel cream sauce, New potatoes and green beans. The other choices were veal and beef roulade, pike-perch fillets or artichoke ragou.
We were already over the Atlantic before the meal service finished. I forgot to take a picture of the desert, it was a Tiramisu with rhubarb mascapone and strawberry coulis.
Time to look at the IFE, some movies, music, TV shows, everything standard but nothing exceptional in terms of quantity. I only watched some short programs about L.A. and Jupiter.
I just love crossing the Atlantic, especially during the day. This was my 13th time flying over the pond and I just love watching the endless blue sea 39,000 feet below.
Quality business class headphones and the blanket.
It was a very nice day outside and the flight was really calm, not even a single sing of turbulence at our cruising level the whole flight!
Once you put your seat in the lie-flat position, another seat control panel reveals. It is very useful as you do not need to look up to the armrest to change your position.
After a quick trip to the bathroom I was ready to enjoy my 'flying bed'.
We had to get up early (our Adria flight to Zurich left Ljubljana at 7:45) so I was a bit tired and got an hour of sleep on this flight. Where has the time gone, there are only 2 and a half hours remaining of this wonderful 8 hour flight.
The cabin has a 1-2-1 and 2-2-1 configuration. On the left side there are single and double seats changing at every row, in the middle there are two seats and on the right side there were only single seats. I was able to reserve single seats for all of us on the right side on the way to YUL, but on the way back there were already taken so we were supposed to seat in 9AB and 11AB on the other side. But that was not the case in the end. Why? You will see in my return report
As I mentioned the headphone quality was good.
I love the way how Swiss promotes their country with a lot of video material on the IFE.
Seatbelt contains an airbag.
I opened the window shade and it revealed some stunning scenery down below.
A lot of ice.
It was amazing, I spend almost an hour just watching out of the window.
It is just amazing how you can travel from Europe to North America in such a shor time and what kind of remote places you fly over.
Who needs IFE if you have a window seat
I guess nobody lives down there
Among the seat controls there is a button for mood light. I spend a lot of time pressing that button on and off, trying to figure out where it is Finally I have been able to locate it just in front of me.
Meanwhile there was still nothing else but ice to see out of the window.
The snack service started and it was the best pre-arrival meal I had on any flight. On the menu it was only listed as A selection of delicious snacks will be served for you to enjoy before your arrival.
Chicken breasts, spring onions and chinese glass noodles salad with sweet and sour sauce. It tasted great.
I sure did.
I just can get enough of this pictures.
Ice cream was offered for desert.
The amenity kit.
The second biggest disappointment of this flight. A layer of clouds blocked my view
The time was just flying by.
Cabin view just before descent into YUL.
Crystalvue coated do not polish.
Since it was Easter we were given big chocolate bunny.
Another view of the cabin. Seats on the right side are either located next to the window with the table on the left side, or next to the aisle with the table on the right side.
Still nothing to see outside.
Finally, first views of Canada! It is a lot less greener here then it is in Slovenia.
I love flying into a new place and watching new landscape through the window.
A cloudy day in Montreal.
It started raining the next day, but it wasn't too bad.
Nearing YUL.
This place looks like a large prison.
More and more buildings.
Almost there after 8 hours of flying.
Final approach.
Touchdown!
Taxi to the gate was quick.
In here guys!
We parked next to Air Transat.
After disembarking we proceed to immigration. It was not busy and soon it was our turn. You have to present your boarding pass, customs form and proof of citizenship. Some routine questions (how long are you staying, what are you going to do in Canada, when are you leaving,…) and our passport were stamped. Bags were already on the belt when we arrived so in no time we were in a taxi and on our way to the city (there is a flat fare of 38 dollars from the airport to city center). Here are some pictures of Montreal and Quebec:
View from the mountain.
NHL Playoffs Montreal vs Boston Game 6, on of the highlights of our trip.
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.
Quebec.
St. Patrick pub in Quebec, the only place with live broadcast of 'el classico'
Metro.
Underground city with a lot of shops.
This was defiantly my best flight so far, Swiss did a great job, their seat is great, the crew was amazing, nothing to complain about (except the airshow, but it was working on the return flight). I expected the same on the return flight, but that was not the case. I will explain everything in the return part of the trip that will also feature some flying baggage containers and a go around.

great trip report!
just flew on the a333 in business class ZRH-DLA. I loved the option of the softer or firmer! I had one of the solo window seats with two large table on either side, only downside to this is the the armrest doesn't lower to make bed wider and although all the table space was nice there wasn't much space to store stuff (like a camera) and the PTV size and rotation left a little to be desired, BUT those are all the little things, over all I greatly enjoyed their product as well, good FA's etc. i do have to say in ZRH I was sent to three different lounges due to connection time and gate, and each one told me to go to another lounge and the last one i was sent to didn't even exist so I didn't even get to enjoy that.
and as a side note, I wouldn't suggest transiting in DLA... WASN'T a good experience. lets just say a swiss agent holding a lounge access card with a few names on it (not including mine for some reason) told me I had to go through immigration. I told her I was in transit and in business class so had lounge access, showed her my business class tickets, yet she pointed me towards the health screening and on to immigration.
and three hours of running around the airport being told I had to pay money for things I didn't need in-transit (and the money went into peoples pockets, and I know this as no matter what amount they gave me in Cameroonian dollars they would accept my euro or pound note without change or telling me the exchange rate until they saw what i had) and an armed security guard who took my passport because I didn't have a visa (although i kept telling them I wanted the transit office because I was suppose to receive the free transit visa there, they then sent me through to recheck my bags, which wasn't even necessary then security wouldn't let me back through because I had no passport, even though it was one of their security guards who took it and they got really upset that I was in their country with no passport and thus no visa and started threatening the Swiss rep in French who was with me (at this point I was sure they'd take me to a Cameroonian prison or holding cell until it was sorted out. and i was sweating bullets as my family was in Malawi and I didn't have any telephone numbers as they hadn't contacted me yet), but props to the swiss rep for getting me through and reconnecting me with my passport
... and after he looked at my ticket he said "oh sir you should have gone to the lounge in the first place and they would have taken care of your visa" I wanted to say a lot of things, but simply said "yes, that would have been better" ... I was ushered into the lounge and the lady who had originally led me astray gave me a slight smile... I was relieved to be safe and onwards, but a little annoyed.
well that was a little longer then a side note, sorry to divulge from your great TR, I just wanted to share my recent Swiss business class story... as annoying as all that was I'd still like to try Swiss J or F on a longer flight... just not to DLA
All the best,
Cheers-
Kyle

SWISS seem to have a great Business Class on A333, the colors looked a bit dark though but still very stylish.
Finnair have exactly the same seats on their newest A333's. I had a change to check the new cabin a couple of weeks ago on a holiday charter HEL-LPA, here's a TR if interested:

I have read your trip report when you posted it and immediately noticed the similarity between both seats. I had the opportunity of flying in them just a few days after your report and comparing them now they really are the same. I think they are great, one of the best I've had the opportunity to try out so far.
Quoting CXB77L (Reply 4): Excellent trip report. Thank you very much for sharing. I do like their J class configuration, with the option of selecting individual seats - perfect for the solo traveller.
Thank you for your nice comment. The configuration is excellent as you have a window seat and direct aisle access if you are traveling alone. And in my opinion it is better than the herringbone design, as you can look out the window without having to break your neck.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5): very nice report, good to hear you enjoyed the LX J Class experience. I read with special interest because I tested LX' J Class on a trip to California in February. Report to follow soon!
Thank you. I am looking forward to your report, it will be nice to compare your experience with Swiss.

It was working on the return flight and it was really great, with a lot of different animations and information.

I also like your Montreal scenery very much. I have never been to Canada before. Your pictures encourage me to visit the country.
I am amazed by LX’s new J interior. It really caters everyone’s need, from a lone traveler to a couple traveling together, either on the left or right side. It has been two years ago that I flew LX. I am glad to see the cabin refurbishment.

Hello again Blaž, as you've might noticed I'm spending the night catching up on your reports
Nice to see another LX long haul J report on the forum, not too many of them around. Have a flight booked from PVG to ZRH, 13 hours and 10 minutes in the new J seats, reading your report was a nice way to see what's in store. From what it seems they really offer a nice product here. Certainly good value for the money I hope!
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): The Panorama lounge is ok, but I think that the one at the A gates is better. But you do have better views outside here.
That lounge looks pretty nice, although weren't you able to use the A-gates lounge despite having the E-gates printed on your BP? Or perhaps there wasn't much time.
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): I was seated in 11K in the second business class cabin. The first one only has two rows of seats.
The main cabin looks pretty nice, although how comes you didn't pick the stûbli which is a bit more private?
From all the take-off videos I've seen from ZRH, one could draw the conclusion that the climb on the A330 is quite a bit faster and more powerful then the A343 (that just seems to be struggling to get airborn).
The 12 inch screen certainly looks nicer then the 10" on the A340. In fact they've just re-used the screens from the old J in the A343. Suppose they didn't have the 12" screens since they didn't want J to have bigger screens then F... Product differentiation. Too bad they won't install the new F on the A343 either.
Was that the whole starter or just the "side salad"? Isn't there normally a plate starter too.
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): And the main course, Roasted fillet of beef, morel cream sauce, New potatoes and green beans. The other choices were veal and beef roulade, pike-perch fillets or artichoke ragou.
Looks very nice, although couldn't they have served it on a flat plate rather then a "bowl" hmm...
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): We were already over the Atlantic before the meal service finished. I forgot to take a picture of the desert, it was a Tiramisu with rhubarb mascapone and strawberry coulis.
Suppose the dessert came in those tiny little glass cups. Did you have any Nespresso with that?
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): but on the way back there were already taken so we were supposed to seat in 9AB and 11AB on the other side
Suppose you were lucky not to be seated in row 9 since it doesn't have any windows.
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): Chicken breasts, spring onions and chinese glass noodles salad with sweet and sour sauce. It tasted great.
That looks nice too, although the portion size a bit on the small side. Was it possible to get 2nd servings?

I spent an hour at the A gates lounge before heading to the E gates. I've had one whole day in that lounge in December, when my flight to JFK was cancelled, so I wanted to try the other lounge this time.

Simply because there were four of us travelling and the stûbli was already full. I did however get the smaller business cabin on my recent SIN-MUC flight on LH A343.
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 21): Was that the whole starter or just the "side salad"? Isn't there normally a plate starter too.
I think you can choose between salad or something else, I'm not completely sure any more.
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 21): Suppose the dessert came in those tiny little glass cups. Did you have any Nespresso with that?
Yes, those little glass cups are great
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 21): Suppose you were lucky not to be seated in row 9 since it doesn't have any windows.
It's only missing one out of two windows, so it's not that bad.
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 21): That looks nice too, although the portion size a bit on the small side. Was it possible to get 2nd servings?
I think they did do a second serving, I'm not sure though.
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 21): That's a nice touch! Did they store the coats as well or were they just left hanging by the seat?
Yes, once you put your coat up they came and put it into storage. It is a lot better than LH, where they destroy your boarding pass so they know which coat belongs to which seat.
