Background
It has been a very long while since I wrote a trip report. This one is rather special. Me and my partner have been having tons of difficulties lately, without going into details, we had decided to take some time apart, so I remained in Argentina and he moved temporarily to Chile, where he is from.
Finally, after a lot of talk, we decided to take a trip together, and we picked Easter Island, thinking it would be a nice place to visit, isolated from people, things and other distractions.
To make a long story short, our week in Easter Island was a total success, he is in fact coming back to Argentina next week and we had an amazing time.
For people who say that 2 or 3 days are enough in Easter Island, well… my opinion is that they are terribly mistaken. The island is very small, but there are a million and one things to do. Visiting those weird statue heads is just a small part, you can go to the beach, go hiking into the volcanoes, take a four by four and go exploring, go out at night to really nice bars, do some plane spotting and more. We had a blast. We spend five days over there.
So this trip report is about the flight back to Chile from Easter Island. We had to take LAN as they are the only carrier that flies there. I, however, don’t get the negative comments I read from some people here in the forum about LAN as they usually provide me with very good service, and this was no exception.
The airport
The airport in Easter Island is very weird. It’s very small but it has a very long runway. I am sure you nerds know by now that it was to be used as an alternative landing site for the space shuttles, so NASA and the government of Chile extended the runway to over 10.000 feet. The airport is very basic though:
And a funny sign:
Some thing this airport is fantastic for, is the plane spotting opportunities it provides. While you are waiting for your plane, you can walk almost to the runway and photograph your ride back to the continent. Here are some pics of my plane landing. It was one of the Oneworld birds!!!
Check in was a breeze, and the lady at the counter was really nice. She produced our boarding passes and assigned our seats 2A and 2C today (we had flown into the island on 1A and 1C).
After the plane landed, people were asked to go into the boarding area, and we obediently complied. There is an x-ray machine prior to checking in, which prevents people from taking things from the island, such as stones, part of the monuments, etc. The other x-ray machine is located next to the boarding area. Some pics from the boarding area:
My ride:
A nice looking moai:
This is the gate, there is a different line for business and elite passengers:
This shot attempts to be artistic, with all the flight attendants and the bird behind:
This is a plaque talking about the NASA and Chilean collaboration:
Boarding was called, and we proceeded to the gate. I have to say that the plane was late into the island, so we were delayed a good hour and a half. However, since the island is so small and everybody knows about everything, we were told about this during checkout at the hotel, so our transfer bus to the airport was delayed accordingly. Everything was very relaxed.
Here are some pics of the boarding process… we were the first ones to board the plane
Captain waiting for us:
Yours truly:
During boarding, we were greeted by a very nice flight attendant, who said she would take care of us during the flight, and offered the customary drinks. LAN offers a nice Pisco Sour aside from the champagne and the water, and that’s what we had:
Then, my partner (who is a photographer btw, and a very good one) asked the flight attendant to ask the pilot if it would be ok to take a pic of the cockpit, and the pilot was very happy to let him. The pilot had not heard of airliners.net though… :P
After that, doors were closed and we commenced our taxing into runway 10. There were only a few seats empty today in J, which was very different from our flight into the island, in which we were only 7 people in J. During both flights I took a walk to Y, and would say that load was over 80% as there were very few seats left.
Here is a very nice video of the take off:
And some more pics of the map, it looked hilarious, as if we were in the middle of nowhere, but in a way I guess we were:
Menus were waiting for us in our seats and this is what was offered today:
I chose the agnolotti and my partner the tuna:
We were also offered a nice Chilean sauvignon blanc.
The flight was only 4 hours and 10 minutes, so this was the only meal service offered. I have to say my dish was very nice, but my partner´s tuna was rather dry. During the meal the flight attendants made runs offering wine, warm bread and water.
After the meal trays were taken away, the flight attendants offered pillows and duvets, which were warm and comfy. I only took one more pic, as I fell asleep the rest of the way.
Conclusion
LAN is one of my favorite carriers. I don’t believe they have anything lacking when compared to other world class carriers and still fail to see the attitude, robotic demeanor, cold service that other people see. And I fly with them at least once a month. I loved this flight, service was very nice, and flight attendants were very kind and accommodating.
Easter Island is a must. There are too many cool things to do in the island, and we didn’t even do them all… We had no time for the scuba diving, surfing or boat trips. I recommend strongly visiting. Also, plane spotting can be very fun. I leave you guys with some pics we took while spotting:
And the Qantas plane that we were lucky to get while there:

Hola Ogre727!
Thanks for this interesting insight in one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
LAN always seems a great airline to me. I am looking forward to flying them when visiting Argentina next summer, they seem to offer a great service, despite being almost a monopoly form South America.
Pictures are great and the food looks very nice, nice idea to have a pisco sour included in the welcome drinks... it adds a nice local touch to the flight.
Salut! and happy to read that things with your partner got better; maybe the magic of the place played its role. All the best!

Very good report! I love seeing reports on Easter Island. Definitely a place I'd like to visit someday.
I love small airports like this, where you can get really close to the runway action! The LAN 767 with winglets looks very striking coming in and departing!
Looks like you had a nice flight in J as well. I'm surprised however that for a 4 hour international flight, LAN would only offer a one tray meal service! Food looks tasty, but not very substantial ...

very nice report! remembering me my trip in January but ouf of Lima. In case of my flights the J was nearly totally empty with on both ways only 2 revenue passengers up front and 100% load in ECO.

Thanks for sharing. Easter island is on my next "to-do" list. What hotel did you stay at, and would you recommend it to others?
Quoting ogre727 (Thread starter): The flight was only 4 hours and 10 minutes, so this was the only meal service offered.
This is what I have found on all my LAN flights, the food they offer is nice, but always very simple and basic, and the emphasis is on collecting the service items ASAP. On my recent flight from LIM-IGU, at 3.5hours, we were offered a chocolate and a small ham and cheese croissant, as well as a choice of drink. I had only just finished my croissant and the FA was back ready to collect the rubbish. The only other time I saw her was when I went to the toilet, and when we got off the plane. In their defense, it was a beautiful croissant, but quantity was lacking for a 3.5hour international flight. We got more on the one hour flight LIM-CUZ.
I look forward to exploring the IPC airport next year sometime, your photos look great. Our intention is to take the once a week flight on to PPT for a few days before heading back to Australia, sadly our flights will be in Y, but I plan to stay somewhere really nice to compensate.
Thanks for your report.

couldnt agree more, the service of LP/LA is a joke on the midrange flights within SouthAmerica, even worth on the 1 stop services like LIM-UIO-MDE or LIM-LPB-VVI, on the secon legs they even do not offer water, only focused on Duty Free sales.

Nice report, Ogre727 !
Easter Island is definitely a must ! Can't wait for LAN to resume its LIM-IPC-LIM flights next year !!!

I agree with you, however LAN's catering in Economy class can be a bit disappointing sometimes.

Thanks for sharing! It reminded me of my trip to IPC in January, but as Avianca, I was flying from LIM. The service was excelent in Y, I really like LAN as well and don´t understand how can some people not like them.
Very nice TR and excellent pictures. I'm glad that your trip was a success and that you enjoyed the island.

You are not the only one that is perplexed by the negative comments. The service is very good and LAN receives many awards in regards to their services every year!

Very nice pictures! CC-CXJ is one of LAN's newest B-767-316ERs and the a/c is only 1.5 years old!

I must say, it's quite refreshing that LAN offers this option to Premium passengers on most of their international flights!

LAN's pilots are awesome, I'm surprised that they did not know about this website, glad that they do know of it now. Even LAN Ecuador's pilots frequent airliners.net from time to time.

Indeed, there are lots of different activities to do on Rapa Nui, and some great museums as well.

I searched the internet but couldn't find anything else. Do you have any other info or photos of their expansion plans? I was in Easter Island in Dec 2010 and didn't take a photo of the huge display in the airport terminal.
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

As previously stated, this flight is a domestic flight. On the IPC-PPT sector, a full meal service and light snack, (before landing) are offered, along with amenity kits, a duty free service, down comforters, etc. This also applies to the LIM-IPC route, whereby pax are offered a full dinner service and a light breakfast before landing, etc.

Guys,
Thank you very much for your comments. I really appreciate all of them.
Quoting 797 (Reply 10): Dude, nice report. But you lost your funny touch... this was like reading a IPC Brochure
Its not gone... this one needed to be solemn and serious... funny will come back, I hope.
Quoting pugsley (Reply 4): Thanks for sharing. Easter island is on my next "to-do" list. What hotel did you stay at, and would you recommend it to others?
My hotel was not bad... I found the staff to be not too nice, though. Like the day we checked in they had messed up the reservation and they sent us to another hotel for one night. They gave us a free car for the inconvenience, but no apology was offered... more like "dont worry, you will have a place to stay". Almost like "why are you annoyed?"

Oh, La Isla de Pascua!!
I have a big wish to visit this place, as many others here already said! But that's also because in 2008, I visited a museum about the Island in Viña del Mar, which I found pretty interesting (most of my friends found it boring though...)
Your TR is really great and I enjoyed every single line and picture of it.
Very nice that the captain allowed your partner to photograph the cockpit before departure!

= AAW . More important than this TR .
Thanks a lot for sharing this with us, and to hear on what JCL would look like on this sector. I have done it in Y. I am impressed by the Pisco welcome drink ... though underwhelmed by the meal options for both your partner and you.
Thanks for sharing.
Saludos,
A.
PS: This is one of those times I am OK with the airport remaining small. The mystery of IPC is it being far away and special - the mainland Chileans have done enough damage to native culture and the last thing I'd want is that to change.
