Hello dear readers, welcome to the third instalment of my travels to Mexico and down into South America.

For those new to this series, here is the trip route

There are many options when travelling from SCL to GRU, rather than take a direct flight, why not take 2 flights for almost the same money and go via EZE?

So, I took a LAN 767-300, this would afford some 3 hours or so of spotting in EZE, it seemed a good idea at the time, the connecting flight was operated by a TAM under a LAN codeshare, so there arouse the opportunity for fly a TAM A330.

The LAN 767 would also be my first flight on a 767 with winglets, seems the entire LAN 767 fleet, including the freighters have them - they must deem the fuel savings worth the cost.

The flights were booked on the Ebookers website, easy to use and my e-mail confirmation came back a few moments later with a confirmed seat allocation for the first leg and more importantly a PNR number, something I've not been given when using Opodo in the past.

Using the PNR I checked my booking on the LAN website and changed the seat on the first sector to the last row in the cabin, attempts to change the seat on the TAM operated second sector proved fruitless, this needed to be changed as it was an aisle seat.

A call to the local LAN office also proved fruitless in changing the seat, so I had to search the web for a number for TAM, the website was not much help, in the end I found a number via a forum, the call was answered quickly and the agent changed the seat for me, sorted!

So join me now as we fast forward a few months!

As you may know I arrived early the day before, the entire day was spent spotting from the outside of the terminal, I managed 50 odd new machines and a nasty sun burn despite just a 2 or 3 hours in the sun, it's strong this time of year, I do suggest lot's of cream, wearing a hat or staying in the shade!

Re the Sky Airlines 737-200, these are being replaced by A320's to get them whilst you can, wish I'd had an extra day and taken a trip on one, my last 737-200 flight was in 1997!

I left the hotel around 6am, it was just a short walk to the terminal building, a few shots en-route.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070875.jpg

Entering the building I approached the LAN agent guarding the entrance to LAN's check-in desks, he advised me to use the self service machines before returning to check bags, hmm, seems you have to use the machines, no choice here!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070891.jpg

I found a free machine and tried using the passport ID option first, no luck so I dug out the PNR off of the documents, glad I brought copies with me, that worked fine, though each page on the machine was in Spanish, there might have been an English language option though I must have missed that, so I just kept going, though one of two of the questions were causing me to scratch my head trying to guess what it meant, I can order beer and a few other bit's but Spanish is not my strong point - in the end the machine spat out the two boarding passes of the paper variety.

Next stop passport control and security.

Passport control was a painless affair if a little slow, the flip side was security screening was a breeze as there were no lines.

As with many airports these days, you arrive airside in the middle of a duty free shop

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070897.jpg

not needing or having the space for anything else I kept going.

According to my boarding pass, boarding would take place from gate 19 at 06:45, that gave me plenty of time to walk the terminal for a couple of pictures and check out what was parked on the ramps, any opportunity for a few new registrations!

From the outside, the terminal building gives the impression of being bright an modern, however once airside it is all rather drab and very corridor like.

I managed to collect a few new planes on my walk, a planned stop at Starbucks for a coffee was dropped,a rather large queue of at least 15 people, so I decided to head to the lounge instead, I figured I had perhaps 10 minutes or so to grab something.

LAN Lounge

The lounge is either down the stairs or via the lift to the level below, when you greeted you are greeted with with some nice pictures of LAN's history, they sure remind you how much this airline has grown over the years.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070914.jpg

I've not given it much thought, but looking back LAN has indeed come a long way and grown to be a major force in South America.

Credentials checked by the lounge agent and I'm free to enter the lounge.

Views are limited to the outside, at this time and I expect much of the time, the blinds are down to help keep the heat out.

Enough comfortable seating spread over several areas including a hard wired PC section, the connection was very slow when I had a quick peek @ A.NET.

Two areas had identical F&B offerings, some fruit, sandwiches and pastries were set out along with OJ, mango and Rasberry juice, the latter very tasty.

Flight 405 was announced for boarding just before 7, arriving at the gate a few moments later begged to differ, however a moment later a boarding announcement was made, the masses in the seating area took to their feet.

Situated To the right of the gate podium are 3 stands, one indicating priority, one for rows 1-14 and the last for rows 15 onwards, I think this is a pretty good way of organising things, if you have thee space of course.

A few moments later and the priority line started to move forward, boarding passes checked but the passport hardly glanced at.

Here's my bird for the flight to EZE.

CC-CRH has an interesting history, originally ordered by Canadian but NTU, sold to GPA and leased to Malev as HA-LHC, further to China Southern as B-2652 before joining LAN in 2004. Despite a couple of different homes before it, the aircraft is in excellent condition internally. Not directly related to this trip, but Malev seemed to have operated 2 different 763's with the HA-LHC reg, c/n 426 & 738.

Boarding was via door L1, greeted at the door by a smiling LAN FA, boarding pass checked and directions are offered as to the aisle for your seat.

Today's load was pretty light in both classes, J ended up with just 13 seats occupied out of a possible 30.

The seat was pretty comfortable though it's design prohibits any stowage of luggage during departure or arrival, a negative point, apart from that it's all good, legroom is excellent at 74".

Charging points and USB connections are all a plus when you have power hungry apple products, or a long flight ahead of you.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070954.jpg

One of the downsides of the last row of J is the proximity to economy, and right behind me was a screaming child, whilst I appreciate you could hear this child in 1A and likely the cockpit, it's even worse being so close.

Stunner outside!

Pre-departure drinks of either OJ or water were offered, followed by offerings for newspapers, magazines and a pre-order form for duty free should you require it. The magazines and papers were offered from a trolly in a similar fashion to Iberia.

Whilst looking out of the window, I noted both of the windows I had easy access to were were not that clean, especially the one nearest to me, so apologies in advance for some of the picture quality.

The aircraft climbed quickly, the captain advising he would be leaving the seat belt sign on until we had cleared the Andes mountain range.

At this altitude the condition of the windows got even worse, picture taking became nigh on impossible, looking across the cabin I noted the windows on the other side were in a similar condition, a real shame since the view was spectacular, well what I could see of it!

Once clear of the mountain range, the seat belt light was extinguished, I must add the ride across them had been as smooth as silk, not a single bump.

Breakfast service started approximately 45 minutes after departure, a simple tray with fruit, a muffin and a plate with cold cuts of meat, cheese, a slice off egg and half a cherry tomato. Small but perfectly adequate for this length of flight. In addition pastries we served from a tray along with tea/coffee and fruit juice and water.

It might be a simple meal, but at times this is all you want and I must admit by the time it was finished I felt quite full. I had a second cup of the coffee, that was excellent, the best I've had since leaving London a few days ago.

Gazing out of the window over the flat lands of Argentina is quite relaxing, just a shame the windows don't allow a good shot.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070986.jpg

I can feel the plane begin descent, it's almost 10 to 9 in the morning.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070998.jpg

For the first time in the flight we hit a little chop though light enough for the seat belt signs to stay extinguished.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070999.jpg

In inflight announcement is made, appears the cabin needs to be sprayed prior to landing to comply with regulations, it won't affect our health they say, once done it smells more like some kind of deodorant.

After a trip to the bathroom revealed bottles of lotion and the like, nice.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1070983.jpg

I discover my third window is in pretty good condition, just a shame I noticed so late in the flight and that once seated I can't reach it, though a later discover if I open the seat belt to the largest possible size I can lean forward from the edge of the seat and take pictures.

The ground continues to get closer as approach continues.

Prior to the front door opening, two of the flight attendants placed themselves between the cabin divide to stop economy passengers trying to flood into business class, nice touch.

All in all it was an enjoyable flight, I hope to have the need and opportunity to fly LAN again in the future.

Once off of the plane, last shot, not great.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080022.jpg

Terminal time.

I followed the connecting flight signs, seems I was the only person connecting off of the flight today, everybody else was ending their flight here in EZE.

In the middle of a corridor sits the x-ray equipment and a tensa barrier, it seems the barrier is to stop people getting to what I assume is the domestic or at least AR part of the terminal, the x-ray equipment is of course for connection passengers to pass through, I asked if liquids needed to be removed, the woman advised no.

I have to say the exterior of the old original terminal building looks superb, old, in need of repairs and full of character, great looking, full of history! - sorry no picture, was not in the right place to take one.

Once in the airside section there is not much to do and because of the layout taking pictures of the traffic must be done through two sets of glass and you might have to avoid disembarking passengers too.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080025.jpg

The terminal has 10 gates and it's quickly walked, with little to do and minimal traffic I thought I'd look for a lounge. The United Red carpet lounge opens at 14:45 so not that's no use. I tried the AA Admirals lounge too, however despite the ticket being a code share with LAN they would not allow me access since the next flight was on JJ metal, I didn't bother trying the Iberia lounge, figured it would be the same story.

I took another walk of the facility to kill another few minutes before getting a coffee. The coffee was awful but I finished it, they give you a cup of water, I guess it's to wash the taste of the coffee away, the water was awful too, yuck!

Coffee experience over I wandered around the waiting areas with a view towards the runway, hoping to snare a few more planes on the Argentinian register.

I have to say traffic levels are dire, I know AEP is busier, but i never realised how slow EZE is, in hind site, not a great choice but time had not allowed for a trip to AEP, perhaps I should have planned the trip a little better.

I killed time with a little lunch, I had planned to wait until the flight but was getting a bit hungry.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080048.jpg

Initially I assumed I would be flying on PT-MVS, however MVQ arrived and parked at gate 4 around 13:00.

By the time I got to the gate area it was packed, quite contrast from the almost deserted area from earlier in the day.Three widebody flights departing from 3 adjacent gates, an AZ 772 to ROM, JJ 332 to GRU and an IB 346 to MAD.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080054.jpg

Prior to boarding it got a bit messy around the podium, people seemed to be getting all lined up, figured I'd join in though it was a bit tricky since the line had become a 'blob' of humanity. One of the ground staff was checking documents and stamping your boarding pass, seems you need this stamp, without it no boarding, not that it had started yet, however it started a few minutes later, it was now about 13:40.

If there was any priority boarding for F & J passengers I never noticed it.

Ground staff were at the entrance to the jetway, they checked you boarding pass and took off their section, handing you the stub, free to enter I too this shot half way down the jetway, best I could manage, sun in the wrong place again!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080055.jpg

After my customary touching the airplane, I entered the plane, initially there were no staff however one appeared, checked my BP and directed my right, well I assume that's what she said.

Seat 8A is in the second Business Class cabin located behind door 2L, the second of four rows in this cabin, the forward J cabin has just 2 rows, First is forward of that.

Despite the congestion in the boarding area the flight was far from full, at least in business, our cabin had just 6 seats occupied out of 24.

The cabin was immaculate, though something you would expect from such a young plane, legroom was a mere 60", you could really feel the difference from this mornings LAN flight, however on the plus side the design allows you to have a bag in the space ahead if you.

Pre-departure drinks of OJ or water were offered, I took the OJ, note the colour of the glass

Immigration and customs forms were handed out from a trolly along with a sweet if you so desired.

Door 2L was closed just aft 2pm, push back occurred at 14:05. Around this time dinner and drinks orders were taken, the offerings were chicken or risotto, I took the chicken along with red wine, the choice of Spanish or French, I took the Spanish of course.

I noted another JJ A330 had arrived, including us the were now 3 JJ A330's on the ground, there must be sufficient traffic to warrant putting these birds with F & J cabins into EZE, I suspect most of it is traffic connection on to JFK/MIA and Europe, AR lacks capacity and quality to be a real home player.

In addition to Brazil next door, LAN of course has an Argentinian subsidiary, one wonders why the government does not just chuck in the towel with AR and save a bundle of millions, national pride I guess., though are people proud of their failing national/flag carriers?

Not a surprise, no other traffic ahead of us so a rolling departure, passing a lone AR 744, I suspect next bound for MAD.

Dinner service began around 50 minutes after departure, not quite sure why it took so long, not as if we had any mountain ranges to worry about turbulance, in this time a post departure drink could have been offered, I thought it was a pretty poor show so far.

There few words were uttered if any by the two crew presenting your meal and drinks, breads were offered from a basket, there we no further offerings.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080106.jpg

The starter was a salad, with a salad item I have not seen before, it was fine though I found a dead insect in it, only a small one mind, on one of the salad leaves, there was some brownish mush in the corner, turned out to be tuna, I'm not keen on tuna, I can only manage tuna steak, so I ate the tomato bits and left the rest.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080107.jpg

The main course was chicken breast with mashed potato and spinach, the chicken turned out to be filled with what seemed to be a peso or similar filling, it had a taste I can't quite place, not unpleasant just not quite right, at least to my palate, I ate it though so it can't be all that bad.

Meal finished my tray was taken and drinks topped up by my request, desert in the form of chocolate cheesecake or fruit was offered, I should have had fruit, but took the other. Desert was ok, came with some berry type sauce on the side, was ok, nothing special.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080112.jpg

The table was cleared but I requested top up's for the water and wine when the FA tried to remove the glasses.

There were no offers of tea or coffee, I guess you have to ask.

All in all I guess the meal was ok, service was robotic and lacked any smiles, quite unlike the previous LAN flight. The wine top up's were small too, certainly not generous with the quantities for sure.

As I write this up, the flight map tells me we are at over 41,000ft, don't recall ever being this high, it's a long way down!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080115.jpg

A trip to the toilet revealed nothing special, the flower holder was empty and the toilet devoid of any additional lotions or scents. I returned to me seat, outside was nothing but blue sky above and cloud below us.

I must have dropped off for a while, I awoke to the sound of the captain on the PA, seems we had picked up a holding delay into GRU, he said it would be about 15 minutes though would advise if it extended beyond that.

Looking out of the window the clear blue sky above had change to cloud all around, I can't recall seeing cloud formations like this.

As we deplaned the crew displayed more smiles than they had during the entire journey, not a good impression really, seems they were happy to be rid of us!

As expected we taxied to a remote stand to be bussed to the terminal. I have to say the bussing operation was slick, 3 busses were waiting for us, and unlike other airports I could mention, LHR, they did not pack us in like sardines, makes a nice change.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/LAN%20AND%20TAM%202011/P1080157.jpg

Immigration was very quick too, it was something like 20 minutes from landing to having cleared immigration, quite impressive, obviously we arrived at a quiet international arrivals time hence the quick egress.

Overall LAN were very good, I certainly hope to have the excuse or need to fly them again.

TAM, not what I was expecting, I'm a little disappointed, perhaps it was just this crew?

So, a few days spotting lined up in GRU, CGH,GIG, SDU before travelling home on TP via LIS.

I'll do a report on the CGH-GIG-CGH sector, that might be interesting, both being close in city airports and of course the last will be the TP segments.

I hope you enjoyed these flights, feel free to drop a comment or a line, always nice to get feedback.

Cheers

For those interested in spotting, here are just a few images from the two landside viewing areas in the terminal, note the windows are quite dirty on the outside and the inside is prone to sticky fingers etc from people looking through them.

Mark,

Great Part III to your trip! I've been looking forward to reading this part for quite some time! As usual, great documentation of the entire journey.

LAN looks very nice on this flight, and I'd agree with you, TAM looks okay, but there seems to be things missing/lacking in the service.

I also always like when I am flying Business Class and the flight attendants hold passengers from deplaning until J class empties .. nice touch.

Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to your next installments, and the long haul to LIS!

Hi Mark,

great third part of your series, really enjoyed reading. Very good choice of airlines/types!

Sounds quite good - apart from the sunburn.

Nice pictures. I saw some impressive formations on a recent trip to South Africa.

Hi Mark,

A stunning follow up! I did not expect anything else.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
why not take 2 flights for almost the same money and go via EZE?

Good move!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
The flights were booked on the Ebookers website, easy to use and my e-mail confirmation came back a few moments later with a confirmed seat allocation for the first leg and more importantly a PNR number, something I've not been given when using Opodo in the past.

Good to know. It has been a while since we used both Ebookers and Opodo. Last time it was in 2009.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
in the end I found a number via a forum, the call was answered quickly and the agent changed the seat for me, sorted!

Could the forum be A.net?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
my last 737-200 flight was in 1997

Me too. It happened to be with now defunct Indonesian airline Mandala.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I left the hotel around 6am

At which hotel did you stay?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I can order beer and a few other bit's but Spanish is not my strong point

I am sure there are a lot of Spanish speaking fellows here willing to learn you the language.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
These guys do brisk business

Is it recommendable to wrap your suitcase while traveling around in South America?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
a planned stop at Starbucks for a coffee was dropped,a rather large queue of at least 15 people,

A common sight of Starbucks outlets, except the poor airside outlet at Jakarta’s Terminal 3.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
well would be rude not to sample right?

Wise decision. You will never regret not having a taste of it, like me after skipping the breakfast buffet of EK lounge in Dubai….

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Today's load was pretty light in both classes, J ended up with just 13 seats occupied out of a possible 30.

Finally, an empty seat next to you. I am sure you enjoyed the space. Along with 74 inch legroom, what else could you ask for?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Charging points and USB connections are all a plus when you have power hungry apple products, or a long flight ahead of you.

Definitely. You just have to recharge the battery of your camera somehow.

Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your next adventure especially the SDU-CGH leg!

Hola Mark!

Great 3rd part of your S. American trip.

Nice to see LAN offers such a great service on a short flight SCL-EZE. The legroom looks huge and the seat seems to be very comfortable, great! They seem to keep their service quite in good shape and hope stays like this in the future. BTW, they seem to be doing great business in Spain as they offer a total of three flights out of MAD: SCL, LIM and UIO. I have only flown them with LAN Argentina and their service was quite better than what I found in AR; prices were the same.

JJ seems to be another story: I was surprised to hear their service was so robotic and lacking smiles... it is something you do not expect from such warm people as Brazilians are. Not surprised not to see your traditional empty plate after finishing your meal, from what you said and the pictures food does not seem to be their strong point either.

Great pictures and looking forward to reading part IV.

Salut!

Roger

I am also surprised that LAN did not offer a hot entree. I remember flying in economy on LAN on either an A319 or 732 back in 2002ish and I received an omelet in economy on a flight to COR from SCL!

I rememver the views climbing out from SCL and they are truly stunning!

Nice to see Moron on the Airshow map; think I've met quite a few people from there, unfortunatly........

Extra bonus for the nice spotting pictues from GRU; I know that place well having spent a whole day there spotting on several different occasions.

Great Job, as usual. Just in case you're interested, the 727 you captured, CP-2498, was originally delivered to AA as N706AA, it's a 727-223. From looking at the pictures here on A.net it also appears to have flown for LAB before going to AeroSur. It caught my interest because one of the 727s on my log flies for Aerosur, not the aircraft you pictured though, but rather the former N7450U. Overall CP-2498 was the 1755th 727 off the line. Now I'm thinking i'm going to have to go to bolivia, to get one more 727 for my log before they all get turned into freighters or pop cans.

I'm curious, how was the ride into GRU through all that soup?

I'm looking forward to your next installment, you're making me more and more interested in going to South America, maybe in 2012.

Super report Mark.....nice to see you down this neck of the woods. You'll have to spend more time in BsAs though. You need days rather than hours the next time you come. Yes AEP is the place to go spotting especially since they moved a lot of the short haul traffic over to it from EZE. AEP is a super place to spot and very exciting seeing the jets land and take off in the middle of the city. Good access points along the road side to get some spectacular shots. EZE can get busy but only at certain times of the day.....guess you were there at the wrong time.

I see the LAN 767 flights from SCL flying over my house as they start their descent into EZE so I might have spied the very one you were on. Your TAM flight seems to have left you rather disappointed.....I have only had good experiences with them with especially good crews. You must have got a duff one.

EL-AL has hit the nail on the head and is mainly the reason why AR still exists. The unions are very strong down this way and it would take a brave politician to say enough is enough we shall sell the national airline.
I think the day will come when it happens but until then we are left with a monster which leaks money and provides third class service at first class prices. The work force know they're on to a good thing so why should they even bother trying when they know their job is safe anyway.
It really is a disgrace and the same can be said for a lot of public funded institutions here. Keep people in jobs...keeps the unions happy gets the votes.

Hi, Mark,

a real good read again.
Never been to this part of the world, but it seems with the interesting planes you show us with you´re pictures it´s a must to go there sometimes soon.

Greetings,
Markus(FLIEGER67)

Hi Mark.

An enjoyable part to this series you have going.

Definitely some interesting airlines out that way.

Very good pictures from the approach into GRU. Can't beat a good downpour on final.

Cheers, Lee.

Hi Mark,

A very nice and interesting report you've written up this time!

Nice that you managed to score LAN's 767, in my opinion they're the nicest 767's in the skies today! Love how they've fitted it with the new-style overhead bins and wall linings.

TAM seemed to offer a rather decent J product on the A330, seats look very similar to the ones used on Dragonair and OZ (old seats), however the color scheme seemed a bit odd. The combination of beige and red doesn't go home well in my books, also the glass the pre-departure dring was served in looked very similar to one of those candle light bowls found in IKEA

I found it pretty strange that the Lounge was closed at such hour, how comes?

Thanks for sharing!
//Jonas
