Date: 30 May 2011
Route: Brisbane (BNE) - Kuala Lumpur (Kul)
Flight: Malaysia Airlines MH134
ETD: 2320
ETA: 0505+1
Seat: 5K (Golden Club / Business Class)
Aircraft: A330-300
Flight time: 8hrs 15mins
Registration: 9M-MTB
1st Flight: 29 March 2011

Preflight
After several days in Brisbane, I had to leave my family in Gold Coast and head back to Jakarta for 24hrs for an important meeting before coming back to Brisbane and Gold Coast again an resuming my holidays. Drive from Gold Coast to BNE was quick taking 45mins and I was excited, as finally I am about to fly MH brand new A333.

9M-MTB which is Mh’s 2nd and newest A333 in the new order

Inflight
As usual a very cheerful crew onboard and load is pretty good for both J and Y which is about 90% full.

First impressions are that this is definitely million times better than the usual regional A333. MH really needed this new bird. Seats are of lie flat type and similar to a lot of other airlines J seats, pity its still lie flat and not full flat. In the upright position the seat is really comfortable. Departure slightly delayed due to a small technical fault, pretty unbelievable on a brand new bird that’s barely 1 mth old.
Bye bye Brisbane, see u in 24 hours

Skylighting

After take off I realized that fault was due to a faulty generator, can you imagine tht, and on a brand new bird! Main victim was the IFE which to be restarted several times, but this really did not cause any problem for me as I had my iPad with me and I was going to sleep anyways.
Other then that, the flight itself was uneventful and I woke up for breakfast before going back to sleep and waking up when the wheels touched terra firma.

Flight time: 7hrs 30mins
Registration: 9M-MTA
1st Flight: 23 Feb 2011

Preflight
After a quick 24 hrs for an urgent meeting back in Jakarta its now time for me to rejoin my family in Gold Coast. Arrived at KUL 20 mins early and my time was just spent relaxing in the Golden Lounge. My ride today is 9M-MTA which is MH first in a series of new A333. 2 days ago I flew on MTB which meant in a space of less than 48hrs i have flown on MH entire new A333 fleet hehehe
9M-MTA

Inflight
Pretty good loads in both J and Y. J itself was about 80% full. A cheerful MH crew onboard as usual. After meal service I just slept all the way into Brisbane. Everything went as I expected although the IFE was also giving teething problems, but it wasn't an issue for me as I had my Ipad with me. So this now now in a span of 24hrs where I have been on both of MH’s new A333 and both have teething problems with the IFE.

My thoughts of MH new A333 is that of course this bird is a major step forward from their old A333, however, by the time all of their new A333 enters service, their inflight product will be outdated yet again. So in short, the new A333 have good inflight products, however, I will not use it for such a long route to BNE, but routes to India and maybe Osaka is definitely ok. Well that’s just my 2 cents worth.

Cheers!!

My next trips that I will be posting are:
1) Japan on TG F on the B744 and on our HND on TG J on the A345
2) A quick weekend break to KUL in end June
3) FRA in mid August with my usual TG F on the B744
4) LAX in late August on SQ A380 Suite and return with CX Suites on B773ER

Nice to see a report featuring MH's new 333. Thanks for posting this.

I remember when they first started flying 333s into BNE nearly 15 years ago and like Thai, they've spent the last 15 years swapping aircraft into BNE - 747s to 777s to 333s to 777s to 747s and back again!

I really hate their new colour scheme though - it's bland and entirely uninspiring. It hasn't grown on me at all since it was launched. Blurgh.

Wow ! you flew all the way back to Jakarta just for a meeting and then flew back to Queensland in 24 hours? Wasn't it possible to dial into the meeting or organise for some kind of voice conferencing facility to be available?

Cheers P/jet

You really summed it up well - by the time they fully implement this product on their new A333 fleet, they will once again be hopelessly behind. I really find this new update to be underwhelming - its totally on the lower end of the curve when it comes to new products and not innovative in any shape or form. That's one thing I really like about SQ - say what you will about them but they have an astounding ability to remain competitive in their product innovation. They are one of the few airlines to actually patent their products so that they remain unique - I mean look at their new regional J seats and their new F and J long haul seats. Hell, the SpaceBed was unique to SQ for the first few years when it came into service. The MH seats look identical to a plethora of different second tier carriers' J class seats.

Awsome trip report ! A nice insight into MH's new J class seat. Would be great if you could put up a pic of the seat in reclined mode!
Glad to know the classic MH hospitality is still in place even with the new fleet of A330s coming in.
Have you flown SQ's new regional J class seat on their A330-300s? How would they compare to MH?
I feel angled lie flats are adequate for regional sectors, however I do hope MH would fit proper flat bed seats on the A380

it was actually a meeting and a dinner function, so i really got to be there in person, and it was arranged after i had arranged my Queensland trip

Hi Mark,

Yap, these Recaro J seats are really common now on airlines, the next one would be BE Aerospace lie flats too.

No need for the congratulations ahahahah its pretty easy when their entire new A333 fleet consists of only 2 birds ahahhaha

Cheers and thanks for reading

Can you imagine the all-white scheme on the A380? hmmm, they better think up a more stylish livery soon! I still like the grey underbody/ red highlights, I did grow up looking at the MH fleet flying over my house near the old Subang airport! The DC-10 looked the best in MAS colours!

I can only assume that the A330s are doing mostly regional sectors, hence angled-lie flats. I do hope the A380 fleet will get proper flat bed seats though!

Yes i agree, nothing beats flat beds, however I always find a way to get comfy on them, even on the dreaded old J seats on Swiss! The trick is to individually adjust the settings instead of using the 1-touch button. Usually the lower leg support can go pretty flat, and keep the backrest at an angle. This tends to minimise slipping down the angled seat!

Just a remark here that this is MH's new mid haul J class product. A new long haul J class product is expected to be rolled out when the A380 enter service in April 2012. Therefore the comparison with LX's new flat bed J seat is not quite apple to apple.

Good news indeed, looking forward to their J configuration on the A380. I wonder if those new CX J seats would fit into the upper deck? They look pretty good, not tried them yet, but looks the best of the bunch.

Hi thaia345,

Nice trip report on MH new A333, the buisness class seat made a lot improvement from the old red buisness class seat on its old A333. Seems like the seats is similar to TG 's 777 i think.

Is the new A333 serving DPS to KL ? Or its the old one's

Anyway thanks for sharing the wonderfull TR ,

cheers,

Lets see what MH opts for in J and F on the A380, their A380 will be rolling out roughly the same time as TG and TG already showed what to expect in the cabin

Not just yet, even the new B738 are not serving DPS yet, but occasionally you will get the new B738 operating the MH711/710 KULCGK route

Hello Mr. K, great report!

Interesting to see MH getting new A330's, the old ones looked really awful especially with those nasty red seats. I could imagine it getting a bit stressful for some passengers. Will the old A332's also get the new products, or will these AC be leaving the fleet?

The Recaro seats looked rather OK, pretty industry standard. It's interesting really how some airlines like AY have ditched these in favour of the new Thompson seats, fully flat. Then again, for regional flights they seem pretty adequate.

Food looks great as always on MH.

Thanks for sharing.

Interesting. Wish I could afford to try both of them myself!

With the SQ seats, 1 must stand up to flip the seat over to convert to a bed. I prefer being able to recline the seat directly into a flat bed.

I rather compromise convenience for comfort than compromise comfort for convenience.

Even though this is a leap forward for MAS in the regional sector, it is still not good enough to revive the glory of MAS. They should've taken a braver approach and tried to innovate, rather than just simply content with industry standard. While full-flat beds are not necessary, they could've made the seat look much more attractive with leather as the fabric looks rather cheap. Also, the grey plastic makes it look very factory-like. Catering looks delicious though!

The overall cabin ambience and seats could have been improved, but realistically any improvement by MAS is welcome considering how rare they are. Now we need to test the Y seats. >:D

And thank you for the pleasant report, ThaiA345.

Y seats should be a different story altogether. It was the improvement in Y that received positive feedbacks when the new A333 was launched.
