Dear A-Netters,

This is my first but un-planned trip report, however I would like to share a special experience with you.

Flight stats:
Date: June 15, 2011
Route: AMS-DXB
Flight: EK 148 (seat 10K)
Boeing 777-36NER A6-ECM (SN 37703, delivered 12/08)
ETD: 15:30 ATD 15:35
ETA: 23:49 ATA 00:35

The Emirates experience is well reported on A-Net, f.i. in Akhmad's TR ' Dubai-Amsterdam: a tribute to Friendship' posted on June 3 last.
I regularly fly the AMS-DXB-AMS route, their product is very consistent so nothing new.
Since I live within the 65km range from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport I can use the Emirates Limousine service which adds very positively to the EK travel experience!

Well underway to Dubai passing Qatar at 11:17 DXB time (09:17CET) the captain made a PA advising that all passengers seated at the right side of the aircraft were offered an alternative to the ICE entertainment system by having the chance in witnessing a full moon eclipse!

The moon was visible at 2 o'clock and the eclipse was at that time 80% underway under a 100% clear sky.
Since we were flying in almost a straight line at cruising speed, we were treated with the full experience, it took about 10 minutes to reach a complete eclipse and after another 10-15 minutes the sun had passed the moon for 80% again.

Although the windows on a T7 are quit large, my view was still restricted and I decided to sit on the cabin floor for a better view upwards.
The aft C-cabin was almost empty (ca. 10pax) and I thought I could do this discretely, but my move was almost immediately noticed by the cabin staff, "anything wrong sir?" "No, just watching the Moon." "cool, where is it?..shall I give your an extra pillow to sit on and something to drink?"

All in all, this made the flight a life-time special, by luck a nice addition to ICE and an excellent service extended to floor-level, thanks to a very attentive Emirates crew, both in the Cabin as well as the Flight deck!

Unfortunately I did not bring a camera, otherwise I should have shared them with you all.

Best regards,
Aart

Hi Aart,

When you told me that you were flying EK again, I could imagine you being pampered by my friends on duty. But viewing moon eclipse the way you did, never crossed my mind. Definitely worth sharing with us! Thanks.

Perhaps you can consider bringing along a camera next time. Just in case.

That is my Emirates!

Thanks again.

Suryo

hey Aart, look closely, your phone has a camera   just kidding. thanks for the trip report.

I remember one of my uncles who was a An-32 commander in the IAF was once doing a sortie during a solar eclipse. His stories ran for hours....
