After more than 3 years it was time to visit South Africa and my South African family again. Also it was my first 380 flight.
I didn´t take a picture on my flight from FRA to JNB but on the flight back I took pictures.

Flight data :
Airline: Lufthansa
Airplane: A380 D-AIMA named after my hometown Frankfurt am Main
Route: FRA-JNB
Date: 22.06.2011
Flight time: 9.30h
Class: ECO

Due to a heavy thunderstorm in Frankfurt at the day of departure, a lot of flights were delayed. There were abnormal queues for check in at FRA airport, after boarding we
also had to wait for some passengers in the Airbus, hence we left Frankfurt with a delay of approx one hour.
The service on board was good, but the LH cabin crew could have offered more smiles during services.
The flight back will be more detailed!

So let’s visit Africa. I love South Africa. First we stayed at Kempton Park with the family. After that we went to the Kruger Park and afterwards into a private Game Reserve. We saw all Big five, a lot of cheetahs and all other African animals. It was just brilliant!

After some other brilliant (but cold!) days in and around Gauteng, monkey sanctuary and Go-carting it was time to go home…

Flight data :
Airline: Lufthansa
Airplane: A380 D-AIMH named after the City of Zurich
Route: JNB-FRA
Date: 06.07.2011
Flight time: 10:10h
Class: ECO

Boarding was without any problems
Leg room wasn´t the best, especially when the person in front of you hasn´t got his seat in the upright position.

After a smooth take-off we reached our cruising altitude and the service began. This time the cabin crew was friendly offering smiles to the passengers.

Food was nice!

Let’s talk about the IFE System. The Personal Screen was big and nice. But, sometimes the IFE was really slow and when you compare Lufthansa’s IFE to e.g. Etihad´s IFE System, Lufthansa’s IFE system isn’t as extensive as others.
Next I would like to mention is the map system on the IFE, so that you know where you are, how high you are etc (Nice Camera). I think they showed to many views like in the picture shown
http://i56.tinypic.com/p7z82.jpg
Of course it was nice but still I would like to see more maps e.g. like a day/night map, just like I experienced it on South African Airways

And finally, do you really need those IFE Boxes right there?
http://i55.tinypic.com/23vb509.jpg
I am a little disappointed but maybe my expectations were too high after experiencing Ethihad.

Not the best Idea to put it on top of the armrest. The reading light turns itself on all the time due to the elbow resting on armrest. Very disturbing

I tried to get some sleep but suddenly something happened, that I don’t want to experience again. A man on the other aisle just appeared to be very sick, he was lying on the cabin floor.
The lights were turned on and a fellow passengers who luckily was a doctor and cabin crew gave first aid. Eventually the passenger was able to get up and was moved to a different section of aircraft. In the morning he returned to seat and seemed okay.
Well done Crew and Doctor!

Ok let’s forget about this! Two hours before landing the crew started with their Breakfast service. I just woke up so I only ate the sausage. Very nice!
http://i53.tinypic.com/2zgc8m1.jpg

After a quiet and smooth landing the flight came to it´s end.

To sum it up: It was still a nice flight and the plane is just wonderful. But Lufthansa should think about a small upgrade of their IFE System to meet competitiors.
For me, the most important thing is to feel safe at any stage during flight and with Lufthansa I always feel as safe as can be!

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed the Trip-Report.

Cheers David

Thanks for the report! I too have family (in-laws) in South Africa so we usually go there once per year, have a look at some of my previous reports
LH looks like good, solid service. It's a consideration for my next trip, but I'd prefer something a little more "exotic"

Awesome David,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write the trip report and uploade the pictures.

I have to say that, after reading your report, I am even more eager to go to South Africa on vacations. S.A. has been on my list for a while, but I just have not had the opportunity to go; hopefully soon.

How did you like the LH A380s? I flew LH FRA-JFK back in April and I chose the A380 flight on purpose in order to have my first -and so far only- flight on board the whalejet. I loved the flight. I am probably less tall than you and I was lucky to be assigned an aisle bulkhead seat, so I had heaps of legroom to stretch. I guess that makes a lot of difference.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Hi David,

interesting report, is it your first one? You made some nice pictures, but certain ones didn't load. You should downsize your pics a bit for the reports.

Quoting fra-flyer (Thread starter):
Airplane: A380 D-AIMH named after the City of Zurich

You flew on "Zürich", but that's registered D-AIMF. Interestingly, I flew JNB-FRA on D-AIMF in mid-May.

That's right, there are many more advanced systems out there. But it's still decent.

Quoting fra-flyer (Thread starter):

No. Emirates has tiny IFE boxes which don't bother anyone - but I guess those are more expensive.

Quoting fra-flyer (Thread starter):

Proabably, yes.

Absolutely true. I had the same problem.

At least the plane didn't have to divert.

I flew FRA-JNB on SAA's A346 and enjoyed that flight more than the LH flight. If I had the choice again, I'd take SAA. Catering and service were better.

What I didn't like on the A380 was the fact that I couldn't lean my head against the wall when I tried to sleep. It was my fifth A380 flight, but the first real night flight and the first one longer than six hours, so I hadn't had that problem before.

Sorry, ofcourse it wasn´t D-AIMH!

No it was my 3rd Report. The pictures shouldn´t be so big. Normally it works like this but next time I will downsize them.

I liked that very much because I had more space for my head and arms. When we came to SA there was a free seat between me and my mom. So I actually slept for a long time and normally I don´t sleep at all!

Yes. It just happend while we were flying over the Congo. I don´t know if their airports are 380 ready. The Doctor and the crew really made a good job!

Thanks Plane-Hunter

That's a good point. Would be interesting to know the diversion airports for that route.

Nice trip report. Sorry to hear about the incident with your fellow-passenger. I'm glad he was ok when the plane landed in FRA. Like the pics as well.

Hey David, an interesting bite-sized report you've written up, with some excellent pictures. I really like the pics you took on your safari.

LH's Y product on the A380 seems pretty average to me, food looks nice especially since they offer two hot meals which seem to be the norm on most LH long hauls.

On such a new aircraft like the A380, I was surprised to see them using the same old IFE boxes. IIRC EK are using a sort of miniaturized box with the same size of a DVD-case, and they offer like 800 movies. So it's a bit ironic that LH use a bigger box, and at the same time offering a poorer IFE selection. Also they should've at least placed the IFE box "outside" the row, i.e that it faces the aisle instead, hence giving the aisle seat pax some extra space.

Thanks for sharing!
