My 10th trip report on Airliners.net is nothing special in terms of flights, but I think that the event, Airliners.net meeting at one of my favorite airports, deserves some coverage.
Firstly I have to thank PlaneHunter, who advised me of this meeting and after checking fares and schedules from LJU to FRA it soon become clear that using some miles for the ticket was my best option. Unfortunately, only business class awards were left, but I think it was well worth it.
I arrived to the surprisingly empty parking garage at LJU at around 6:45 for my 8:00 flight to Frankfurt.
I did online check-in and had no bags to check-in, obviously as I was returning the same day, and went straight to security for my first check today.
First a trip to the first floor to have a look at the aircraft parked at the apron.
Adria crew boarding the A319 for their flight to ZRH.
Then I went to get a sandwich from the business lounge. Soon after I was finished, boarding started on-time, at 7:30.
Aurela operating JP450 to LGW today. I must admit I have never heard of them till today.
ZRH flight was ready for pushback.
The bus stopped in front of S5-A F, wearing the special ‘Mini’ color scheme.
I can’t imagine fitting all these bags in the overhead compartments on the CRJ.
Legroom in the bulkhead row, seats 2C&D have the best legroom on JP CRJ2.
6 pax in business today, each was given a 0,5l bottle of water before takeoff.
After takeoff we had a nice view of Šmarna gora, the popular hiking destination with the church (and a nice bar) on the top.
Ljubljana.
Some more green scenery.
Tray table is in the armrest and it is easy to take out.
FA talking with the angry lady in 1A. She was pissed because she had a neighbor at her original seat 2A so she moved to first row and wanted to know how she can write a complaint.
Breakfast tray.
Quite nice for this short flight.
O2 for our crew.
The sign was illuminated for the whole flight.
The clouds cleared as we approached Frankfurt.
It looked like we were going to have some nice weather.
Frankfurt.
Football stadium.
I’m going to spend the whole day up there.
This was my first time seeing A380 in LH colors.
We parked near runway 18 so we had quite a scenic drive with the bus, passing a lot of interesting aircraft that were parked at the remote positions.
‘Cabin crew open the doors please.’
One of the better looking c/s on JP aircraft, I like the Microsoft as well.
After a great drive to the terminal we made our way up the escalator to the B gates.
There a big group of people were waiting and there were police everywhere and they had sealed of the corridor with their tape, so nobody could go past to the exit. After about 15 minutes they removed the tape and everyone was free to go again.
I picked up my boarding pass for the return flight from one of the self-service check-in machines and made my way to T2.
Time of departure is very accurate.
It is always a pleasure taking the train, the view is magnificent.
After making my way up the escalators it was not hard to find a group of people that I supposed they were A.net users. And right I was, Airbuseric, Contact Air and CrimsonNL were already waiting at a table and Flieger67 came by soon, after he was finished negotiating for the price and re-entry.
The price is a reasonable 5 eur or 3 eur for students, and we had to pass security to get in.
The visitor terrace is great and it offers nice views of aircraft parked at T2 and those landing and taking off from 25L and 25C.
Kuwait airways with A.net user LXM83 onboard.
The group was getting bigger and bigger. I was impressed with how many people decided to attend, it was great to meet so many users from all over Europe.
It was quite a challenge keeping up with all the names, usernames, countries, flights…
Which one do you prefer? The B747 or the A380?
Delta in Skyteam colors looks good.
We had a lot of interesting conversations on the terrace, about aircraft, airlines, miles, flights we took, aircraft we have flown on,… It was great to spend the day talking, looking and thinking about nothing but planes, it was just the thing I needed for a break from everyday routine.
And Frankfurt airport with its diverse and nonstop action is a perfect place for such a meeting.
I do not know if I have seen so many aircraft in one day.
Morning was the busiest time with most of the US bound flights departing.
I could just stand there for hours and watch the action down below.
It was a pleasure talking to each and every participant of the meeting, there really just was not enough time to talk enough with everyone.
We also had luck with the weather, it was sunny and warm with temperature around 25 degrees and there was a bit of wind the whole time, so it did not get too hot.
Flieger67 was kind enough to take us to the viewing position next to runway 18, thanks again for that!
Back at the airport we decided to go and get some lunch at the food court. And then back to the terrace!
It was great listening to different members sharing their experience with different airlines and discussing about various miles programs.
Time really just flew by, I cannot believe that we spend seven hours at terrace. I entered at 10 in the morning and we left at around five to get a drink at the Fly Away bar.
Have I mentioned that the traffic at FRA is great?
TAM flight from GRU made a 180 degrees turn after waiting for quite a while. I took this flight in 2009 and we also had to wait quite some time on the ground at FRA to get a gate.
A good friend of FlyingFinn.
Retro.
The smallest airbus.
Two 747 in the same shot are actually not that hard to get at FRA.
Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong running late.
I also took this flight a few years back, it was one of the best I ever had.
Nice color scheme but that does not look good at all.
There is always something happening at FRA.
This UA B747 caused a go around for a LH flight landing on 25C.
Syrian.
It was starting to get a little darker and a few drops of rain fell on Frankfurt soil.
A visitor from Japan.
Qatar.
Some more clouds in the background.
LH A380 being slowly towed to the hangars on the other side made a nice opportunity to take pictures.
I saw a lot of these at YUL.
This might be Akhmad's flight back home, I can’t see the registration on the photo. I took the picture because of the Emergency service ambulance, there are just loading a sick passenger on a gurney into the car.
Asiana.
Condor with winglets.
So after 7 hours of spotting we decided to get something to drink inside. The bar was named properly and we grabbed every free seat and gathered around one table.
At this time people started leaving and heading back home with various flights. After some more nice conversations about everything aviation related those left decided to go back to T1.
Users PlaneHunter and IberiaA319 were on the LAN flight, they had a nice registration CC-CQC. We also checked my flight, it was going to be operated by S5-AAG, the JP Star Alliance CRJ.
Now it was time to say goodbye to those left. My flight departed from gate B12 and I had a quick snack at Quickers.
After that I took a seat by the window.
Going to the A gates.
LJU airport website showed a 42 minutes delay for our flight, but boarding started on time.
It is quite a long drive to the aircraft. JP flights usually have a 45 minutes turnaround time, but this flight has a 60 minute turnaround time.
We had to wait for some traffic…
… and aircraft passing by.
S5-AAG it was.
Dark clouds on our way.
Walking up the CRJ2 stairs once more.
2D for me again. The pilot came on the speaker and announced a 15-20 minute delay due to ATC restrictions over southern Germany. After that something unexpected happened – the young FA came from the galley with a plate full of glasses filled with OJ and water and offered them to every passenger. Great service!
Only 2 passengers in business on this flight. The older FA, one of the nicest I have had the pleasure flying with, asked me if I have my passport. I was a bit surprised and said ‘yes’, and she asked me ‘Are you sure?’ I showed her my passport and she was happy and started looking around. She explained that somebody lost their passport on the inbound flight and that pax was seating at my seat. I checked around but was not able to find it. The FA checked all seats and after a while she returned with a passport and a boarding pass in hand. The passenger that lost the passport was very lucky that the FA found it in time, before we departed back to LJU.
Just as the captain promised after about 15 minutes of waiting we started our engines.
It looked like we had a race to the runway with this MD11, we were both taxiing at a pretty high speed.
But the MD11 won.
It was our turn soon after.
The flight was short, just over an hour of flight time.
An interesting view outside.
The meal was great, as it always is in JP business.
It was hard to get any good pictures as it was getting dark and the window was full of scratches.
We landed as usual, but we taxied to the most remote position possible.
You can barely see the terminal! It felt like we were at Frankfurt.
I asked the FA how come we were parked here and she said she has no idea. She also mentioned that they joke that they parked us in Šenčur. (Šenčur is the closest town to the airport in this direction).
When the ground agent came onboard she asked him about the parking position and he replied ‘This is where they put you.’ It seemed he had no idea why either.
It is the end of the apron here.
There were only two JP aircraft on the ground, quite strange actually. And for the last picture, the same I made this morning.
It was a great day at Frankfurt. To anyone considering attending a similar meeting, I would definitely recommend it! So many wonderful people from different countries. It was a pleasure talking to all of them, they all speak great English so there are no problems in communication.
To those of you who attended – thank you for an unforgettable day and I hope that we will be able to meet again in the future. And if anyone is anywhere close to Ljubljana send me a message, I will be glad to show you around.

Hi there Blaz!
You won the gold medal for bringing up this one so fast! I could not make it out to FRA that day unfortunately... Thanks for this very nice report, makes me feel as if I were there too. Great spotting from FRA also!
'Aurela', what an oldfashioned name for an airline.

Hi Blaž,
You were the first! You sure were fast with this but my excuse is that I was not home until 2AM on Monday morning...
Some very pretty pictures along the way and of course the plane pictures from FRA are excellent - there simply is just too much to see there.
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): Then I went to get a sandwich from the business lounge.
Is the lounge still unstaffed? Or do they have more than one nowadays? Back when I was there in 2005 there was only a single lounge (AFAIK) and inside it was unstaffed, not to mention I was the only person in there...
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): Aurela operating JP450 to LGW today. I must admit I have never heard of them till today.
Well, I told you about them, didn't I?
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): She was pissed because she had a neighbor at her original seat 2A so she moved to first row and wanted to know how she can write a complaint.
Does JP block the other seat in business? If so, what happened - somebody took the wrong seat or a check in error?
Funny, there was actually a Chinese lady in the first ICE train I took to Cologne who was departing on this flight - I just happened to see her e-ticket printout (not that it was very difficult as she had all her stuff spread out on the table in front of her...).
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): To those of you who attended – thank you for an unforgettable day and I hope that we will be able to meet again in the future. And if anyone is anywhere close to Ljubljana send me a message, I will be glad to show you around.
Yep, the same to you. It was a great day. As you said a little confusing and never enough time to talk with anybody in the level of detail you'd like, but that's to be expected. There are always more opportunities to come. As I said, I will get around revisiting LJU at some point, I really want to fly JP, especially the CRJ-900!

Yes, the lounge is still the same and it is still unstaffed, there is a cleaning lady that comes in and cleans every so often. This morning it was quite dirty with empty glasses and plates on many tables.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 2): Boeing, any day. It is beautiful, versus that ugly whale.
I agree, the 747 is better looking, but the A380 is also impressive.

Yes, at least I got two interesting liveries if I did not manage to get one of the A320.

Hello Blaž,
Nice TR, congratulations on being first!
Looking at the picture of the FIDS I can see you really haven't exaggerated when telling me how peaceful LJU airport is.
Interesting to see JP's business class product. Not an expert, but the meals look really tasty and sufficient for such a short flights.
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter): She was pissed because she had a neighbor at her original seat 2A so she moved to first row and wanted to know how she can write a complaint.
Don't understand that kind of people. She's got a row for herself, eventually.

Hi Blaž!
That was a nice meet with you and the others for sure. Good to read your report.
Sandwiches in the LJU lounge look big and quite good, at least a good breakfast, also on board! I guess also on JP they only place 1 passenger per 2 seats in J-class?
"AAG" also flown by me, you remember, the FMO-FRA flight with LH flightnumber, substituded by JP, a nice surprise, but not that comfortable in Y. I do not like the CRJ200 at all to be honest, it's just to cramped. Mealservice on the FRA-LJU leg look really good!
See you!

They are quite filling, I was not hungry at all until our lunch at the food court.

Not according to the FA. It is quite strange, sometimes they have five rows of business with only one or two pax, other times business is completely full. Depends on the load I guess.

I agree, they are cramped and you have to bend down if you want to see anything out of the window. The CRJ9 is much nicer.

Quoting Parton87 (Reply 19): I wish I will have the opportunity to fly Adria some day! It seems like a nice airline with a beautiful livery, especially on the CRJ!
I hope you will get the chance, it is a nice small airline.
Quoting EL-AL (Reply 20): Great report! Slovenia looks like a beautiful country, hope to visit there one day.
It would be great if you will be able to visit someday so we would get a great TR about Slovenia
Quoting EL-AL (Reply 20): Great photos from FRA, what a busy airport.
Sure is, a great place to spend a day.
Quoting infodesk (Reply 21): Thanks for this report of the meeting in Frankfurt. You included so many nice pictures from the terrace that I felt I was a part of it! FRA must be a spotters paradise.
Thank you Infodesk, hope to see you at the next meeting.
Quoting infodesk (Reply 21): Your flights on Adria looked to be of a high standard again.

Quoting MSS658 (Reply 22): First of all it was an absolute pleasure meeting you! I had fun as well. Hope to meet you soon.
It really was great and I hope we will be able to repeat it sometime in the future.

It was really great to meet you and all the others in FRA - as you mentioned, a very appropriate place for such an event.
Best Regards
Christoph
