Greetings, Everyone!

After about three months of no air travel, I was itching to get back to the airport! I spoke to my sister in late-May, and she suggested I make a visit to North Carolina in mid-July. This led me to start doing some flight searching, and I decided to also coordinate it with a visit to my parents in New York. Thus, a multi-city trip was planned. I chose American, as I enjoy flying them, have not flown them in a while, and thought I would use up some Advantage Miles on this trip.

Friday, July 15 dawned in Minneapolis and I got up excitedly and finished preparing my bags before a car came and picked me up 5:00am. The streets around our apartment were quiet on this foggy, muggy morning. Our 10 minute drive to MSP seemed to last more than that, as I was getting excited for my trip. I decided to fly in First Class to Raleigh/Durham through Dallas, and having not been upfront in a while, I was very much looking forward to it.

First Class check-in was empty; having checked-in online and not checking bags, I quickly re-printed my boarding pass, and headed to security. I showed my boarding pass, and was able to bypass quite a long line at the First Class security line. The screen near the E concourse was promising an “on-time” departure, so I headed down towards E-16.

By the looks of it, the agents were able to accommodate all upgrade and standby requests, and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Regular customers were greeted by name, etc.

Boarding began right around 6:30 a.m. for the 7:05 departure. I got in line, and was soon on-board. The flight attendant serving First on this flight was excellent. I never got her name, but she was excellent at what she did. Always happy to help, she had a smile on her face at all times, and made the flight much more special than the next flight to Raleigh. First filled up rather quickly, and we were soon pushing back. The flight attendant handed out pre-departure drinks in First before we closed the door, and then there were refills. The gentleman next to me ordered 2 or 3 cups of coffee! Impressive…

With not too much traffic that morning, we were soon airborne. Sitting in the front of the S80, you really can’t hear anything. It was really peaceful actually; just seeing the plane climb higher over recognizable locations, and then into clouds.

Breakfast trays were not handed around individually, but from a cart. It didn’t matter very much, but seemed to be not as nice as if it was brought right from the galley. Continental Breakfast was on offer that morning, and it was really good. The meal consisted of fresh fruit, cereal, a warm bagel, and a banana. Light, yet just what I wanted. Good job, AA!

Here’s where our flight attendant did a really nice job … While handing around breakfast trays, she would ask... “Would you like a bagel or biscuit to go along with your breakfast this morning?”... not, “What do you want, bagel or biscuit?”

The flight to Dallas was 1 hour 50 minutes, but it felt very short as breakfast was unhurried, and watching the clouds outside always causes time to pass quickly. Soon, I could feel the plane slowing, and we began the descent down … A smooth landing soon occurred.

It was HOT in Dallas after touchdown! The taxi to the C Gates seemed to not be very long, but you could feel the heat through those windows… Upon arrival, our flight attendant instructed everyone to close their window shades before deplaning.

Dallas Ft. Worth was busy as I made my way from one side of the C Gates to the other, for my next flight to Raleigh. I considered stepping into the AA Admirals Club, but $50 seemed a bit much for an hour!  

Flights to San Francisco, Ontario, Los Angeles, Burbank, Phoenix, Washington, all around ours to Raleigh. C21 was our gate, and it was already pretty full when I arrived.

Boarding began promptly at 10:35, and I was soon on-board again getting situated. The flight attendants upon boarding didn’t seem as interested in us from first impressions; no pre-takeoff beverages were done, and service the whole time seemed pretty lacking. Amazing how two flights can be so different?

Door 1L was shut at around 10:55am, and we soon were pushing back. 3 MD-80’s were getting in line for takeoff, just like us. Wow, AA certainly likes those MD-80’s! Besides a few 737’s, that’s all I saw at DFW. I guess the 767’s, 777’s, and 757’s were over on the other side of the airport at the D Terminal.

Takeoff seemed to be an extra-long one; presumably because it was in the 90’s and the MD-80 was utterly packed… The wings flexed a bit as we finally left the runway and blasted skyward.

Drinks with “Hot Nuts” were served within about 20 minutes; again, from a cart. Lunch options included a Chicken Sandwich or a Salmon Salad.

After the beverage service was complete, we had lunch, and it was pretty good. I was hungry, so I ate everything. Having not gotten anything on the ground, I was ready to eat. The sandwich was tasty, and the salad was nice with some Greek Vinaigrette.

Cookies were passed around after lunch, and I grabbed a Bailey’s to go along with it. Sure, it was 12:15 p.m., but hey, it was a day off! 

Clouds and my book entertained me the rest of the 2 hour 20 minute flight. We took a pretty easterly route; Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina …

Drinks were passed around if people wished to have anything else, but after the cookies were served, we pretty much did not see the flight attendants until we began descent into RDU.

Before beginning the descent …

Raleigh/Durham interestingly enough was much cooler than both Dallas and Minneapolis; with temperatures in the 80’s! Not really that cool, but certainly better than the kind of weather we’ve been having in the Midwest. Descent began abruptly; I could suddenly feel a bit of weightlessness, and the MD-80 beginning to slant downwards. I knew landing was not very far away.

After a relatively smooth landing, we taxied off to the very empty C concourse, and parked within a few minutes of arrival next to the open C23 gate soon to be operating the daily AA 767-300 service to London’s-Heathrow—LHR. I remember when RDU used to get the 777-200 everyday; amazing they offer the non-stop daily flight.

Overall, I had 2 good flights with American. The service, food, and flight crew on the first leg to Dallas definitely beat the 2nd flight, but I really can’t complain much about the 2nd flight, as the food was good, and we arrived on-time. I like flying American; I think they do a good job. The only criticism would be to make sure they offer a good, consistent product every time.

I did not include a report on my trip to New York LGA as it was very routine. I did, however, take a few photos I thought I’d share with you all. I hope you enjoy them!

I was served the exact same meal on CLT DFW two weeks ago! The sandwich really was very good!

I did a DFW MEM DFW quickturn yesterday, but took Coach the whole way. On MEM DFW, I was in the bulkhead in Y. Sitting towards the front of the aircraft really does make a difference in noise!

My itinerary was MSP-DFW-RDU-LGA-MSP ... I paid for the RDU-LGA in Y, and used miles for the MSP-DFW-RDU in F, and I think 12,000 miles for the LGA-MSP in American Eagle Y. I think the total miles used was around 30K

Thank you! Interesting you were served the same meal; I guess they don't switch it up very often. I totally agree about the noise on the S80 .. from the front, it is like a library it is so quiet!

Yes, a bit .. more over Brooklyn, and then we began to turn right over Queens before heading out over Long Island, the Sound, and back towards LGA around New Rochelle.

Yeah, it was pretty hot there when I was there too. We're having unbelievable heat this summer in the mid-west, and east-coast. I think it was a record heat day in NYC this past Friday ...

I can still remember when RDU was a hub for AA and they had many other flights in and out of there. Also BNA and SJC.
Wasn't it just a few years back they discontinued their SJC-NRT service too?

Indeed, this is such a simple matter of wording, but it makes all the difference in this case. It's the difference between making the customer feel appreciated and empowered versus making the customer feel like they're just another body sitting in seat 4F and needing to be fed. Kudos to this particular flight attendant.

Yes, amazing how it is one product in theory, but two very different products in practice. Seems like the flight attendants on this leg should take some advice from the FA on the previous leg.

I remember it too. My sister has been living in the RDU area for about 15 years, and so I've made countless trips to see her. AA used to operate F-100's, lots more MD-80 flights, the 777-200 flight to LGW, and destinations such as SFO and LAX I believe? Now, it looks like they only serve DFW, LHR, ORD, NYC, DCA, MIA, and BOS?

Thanks, BZNPilot! Yeah, its an interesting route. By the looks of it, it seems to be a pretty profitable flight everyday, with very high load factors!

Thanks, Ps76! Glad you liked it. I definitely will write a detailed report on my next trip to Denmark in September. We're flying SAS from Washington - Dulles to Copenhagen, and back through Chicago!

I'd agree with you that F class travel many years ago was in a league of its own. However, in this day in age, with an economy still struggling, and tons of change to air-travel in the past 10 years, I felt it was pretty good for a domestic F flight. The service on the way to DFW really couldn't have been any better; it was an 1 hour 56 minute flight, and we had a filling, continental breakfast. The flight attendant was extremely warm, friendly, and professional. I'd agree with you that the flight to RDU was not as good, but hey, what can I ask for. I'm happy to have more than pretzels, and enjoyed the food even though it wasn't that substantial. Again, for a 2 hour 30 minute flight, it was plentiful. I think I'd feel differently if this was the only offering for a transcontinental flight, or other.
