Hello everyone!

This is my 5th TR and my 1st on LH.

My Lufthansa Experience

Background

I had just finished my 2 weeks reservist training when RvXKaz told me about the promotion LH was having to CGK for SGD120 (EUR 70/USD 100) one way. Without wasting any precious time, I decided to proceed with the booking because of three reasons. Firstly, I've never flown LH before so it would be a great opportunity to check out what LH has to offer. Secondly, LH uses B744 for this short route and as such, how can anyone turn down the opportunity to ride on the Queen of the Skies!  Thirdly, come October, LH will be replacing the B744 with A380 for the daily FRA-SIN service.  The A343 which operates on the MUC-SIN service will continue to CGK.

Introduction

I arrived at SIN an hour before check in. Since I was feeling lazy, I just sat in front of the mechanical FIDS. I'm really thankful that the airport management decided not to replace them with digital ones because I really love it when information on the board starts to 'flip'!

SIN T1.

Check in was quick and efficient.
Agent: Sir, your bag only weighs 4kg.
Me: Yes, I know.
Agent: Don't you want to bring it up the plane as cabin baggage? Oh, could it be because you have bottles of liquid that are more than 100ml?
Me: Yes, you're right!

Ok, the real reason why i wanted to check in my bag was so that I could keep the baggage tag.

The agent was ready to stamp my printed boarding pass (i had earlier in the day checked in online). I managed to stop her from doing so and politely asked her to print a proper boarding pass.

My boarding pass.

MI ready for pushback to one of the many exotic regional destinations around Asia.

And they've even got a koi pond+garden at T2!

Feetup at SIN!

Yes, a 20 min delay. We were scheduled to depart SIN at 1700 but the timing was changed to 1720 due to the late arrival of the airplane from FRA.

While waiting for the plane to arrive, some crew members decided to utilise the free Internet stations. And yes, they were checking their FB for updates. Some passengers even had to queue behind them before they can have a go at it! Personally, I find this very unprofessional.

Aaahh, there she is!

If only the aerobridge wasn't in the way.

Another announcement was made to inform passengers of a further 20 minutes delay as they needed more time to clean the airplane. This delay somehow reminded me of how GA distributed snackboxes to passengers after informing us of the possible 40 minute delay. You can read about it here:http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/trip_reports/read.main/192571/

Boarding commenced and before I knew it, I was walking down the aisle of the Queen! Oh but wait, where are the crew? Apparently most of them were busy in the galley.  I was really excited to be on a B744 that I didn't realise the seats in Y were equipped with PTVs until a few minutes after I sat down in my seat!

In Flight

Flight: LH 778
Route:Singapore-Jakarta
Scheduled Departure:1700 (+40min delay)
Scheduled Arrival: 1745
Aircraft:747-400
Registration: Was to excited that I forgot to note down the registration number! oops!

While waiting for other passengers to board.

I love LH logo!

PTVs! Unfortunately, headsets were not distributed! Why??  The passenger seated behind me requested for a blanket but the steward informed her that they do not give out blankets on such a short flight! Could this be the same reason as to why headsets were not distributed? hmmm..

Seat controls with the call button located at an EXTREMELY BAD position .

I wasn't particular about the seat comfort as it was a short flight.

But let's just say legroom was AWESOME!

Stuff you'll find in the seat pocket

Climbing to cruising altitude.

And soon it was dinner. Ok, it's more of snack time.

We had a small bottle of mineral water, chicken sandwich, strawberry cake (?) dessert which was really delicious and kit kat in the snackbox.

Cabin view during in flight.

After 'dinner', I spent the remaining time admiring the clouds.   And before I knew it, we started our descend towards CGK.

Business Class.

I approached the purser and asked if I could snap some pictures of First Class. He said alright and asked a fellow stewardess to escort me to the upper deck. WOW! I was thrilled as this was my first time on the upper deck of a 744. I told the the stewardess about it but she didn't care at all!. It seems like she wanted me to get out of her sight as soon as possible!  This was unlike when I requested to snap pictures of EK First Class Suite half a year ago. The EK stewardess even suggested that I try out the seat functions and gladly opened all the compartments to show off the suite to me!

I enjoyed this flight only because it was on a B744! Personally, given a choice, I would definitely fly GA anytime for this specific route.

You were lucky, only four planes (out of 30) have been refurbished yet.

It was D-ABVC ("Baden-Württemberg") as you can see in one of your own pictures. Just look at the tail.

That's too bad. They could at least hand them out on request.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):

Yes, I can only agree. And believe me, it's not better on the A380.

Good choice, one of the best seats in the house.

Yes, that's what I have chosen on the CGK-SIN route. I hope to get PTVs, too.

I frequent this route way too much and LH is one of the airlines I have flown before besides a whole host of others (SQ, KL, JT, GA, VF, QZ...)

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
I'm really thankful that the airport management decided not to replace them with digital ones because I really love it when information on the board starts to 'flip'!

There is something so retro about these flipboards. Brings back a lot of childhood memories and with every Changi Airport reno, I too worry the days of the flipboard are numbered. thankfully, it survived. The sound of it going "clak clak clak clak..." invokes the excitement of air travel.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
PTVs! Unfortunately, headsets were not distributed! Why?? The passenger seated behind me requested for a blanket but the steward informed her that they do not give out blankets on such a short flight! Could this be the same reason as to why headsets were not distributed? hmmm..

Not that you would get anything else on other full serviced carriers too (eg. SQ) but a blanket I've seen it being given out to passengers who request for it. Service on these European carriers can get a little iffy even in Business Class on such a short sector, let alone YCL. I was once on the upper deck of KLM (SIN-CGK) and a stewardess even had the audacity to ask for my boarding pass, as if to verify if I was a Business Class passenger. Not satisfied, she asked for a photo id so I handed her my passport. Satisfied afterwards, not only did she not welcome me on board, she retreated to the galley in a defeated swagger as if she was on a power trip like no other. In any case, the catering you had on LH (sandwich etc) was the same on KLM, only difference they were placed on casserole china dishes. On SQ and GA, you get a full meal tray with a hot entree.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):

They are on a turn around so they probably could not wait to get you off the plane and relax after that.

Hey Mustafa,

Once again, great trip report! I've been a fan of your TRs ever since, I love the simplicity and the high quality of the images.
Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):

If they didn't have PTVs in Economy!   .....but then I then I realized later on that your 744 has PTVs!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
LH will be replacing the B744 with A380 for the daily FRA-SIN service.

Well from a passenger's standpoint, the A380 is much better in comfort but from an aviation geek like me, the 747-400 is a true beauty!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
I really love it when information on the board starts to 'flip'!

Same here! They have the same thing in MNL, it adds to that airport-feel

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
Ok, the real reason why i wanted to check in my bag was so that I could keep the baggage tag.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Unfortunately, most US carriers charge you for checked-in baggage and there's no guarantee that your bag will be there at your final destination or in one piece anyways...

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
I managed to stop her from doing so and politely asked her to print a proper boarding pass.

I have a whole collection of BPs! Hehe

Hi Mustafa,

Another great report with good pictures.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
And they've even got a koi pond+garden at T2!

One of the things I like about Changi - the gardens with the brilliant displays of orchids.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
and politely asked her to print a proper boarding pass.

Yes a proper boarding pass is so much more desirable than one printed on A4. Whenever I check in with EK at PER, they issue one automatically even though I have checked-in online.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
Apparently most of them were busy in the galley.

For a short flight I expect they would have to make sure everything is ready for almost immediate distribution.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
the call button located at an EXTREMELY BAD position .

It's for decoration, not for use
Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
It seems like she wanted me to get out of her sight as soon as possible!

With the late arrival they would have had less time to make the plane ready for the return journey, but I note that you did at least get a photo of your visit.

I enjoyed reading your report. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Mus!

I'm really glad you took time to do up this precious TR on LH's 5th freedom flight, on their longhaul B744 product nonetheless! It was a delight to read as usual!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
I had just finished my 2 weeks reservist training when RvXKaz told me about the promotion LH was having to CGK for SGD120 (EUR 70/USD 100) one way

haha! I knew you would give it some consideration since I believe you had mentioned you have a certain inflatuation with LH!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
I've never flown LH before
Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
LH uses B744 for this short route
Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
LH will be replacing the B744

3 really good reasons indeed to grab this opportunity!!! I'm really glad you took it up!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
because I really love it when information on the board starts to 'flip'!

I know of someone who love to go to the airport just to watch the board 'flip' all day! LOL

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
the real reason why i wanted to check in my bag was so that I could keep the baggage tag.

Good move!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
My boarding pass.

I'm really glad you requested the real boarding pass! LH's boarding pass looks very classy! Did they give you back the bigger portion or the stub during boarding? When I flew with LH, they only gave us the stub back. Boo.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
We were scheduled to depart SIN at 1700 but the timing was changed to 1720 due to the late arrival of the airplane from FRA.

I guess that's the little risk we must assume when flying 5th freedom flights! Especially when they need to clean up the huge B744 plane after arrival haha!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
And yes, they were checking their FB for updates. Some passengers even had to queue behind them before they can have a go at it! Personally, I find this very unprofessional.

Hmm I have to agree with you somewhat. Not a very good impression for the passengers.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
Oh but wait, where are the crew? Apparently most of them were busy in the galley.

Was there anyone at the door to greet the passengers?

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
Registration: Was to excited that I forgot to note down the registration number! oops!

Yup as what PH has mentioned, the registration ends with VC, as seen in your photo of the tail.
Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
Seat controls with the call button located at an EXTREMELY BAD position .

Yes, I hate that, I always have to be mindful if I was pressing down on the call button!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
We had a small bottle of mineral water, chicken sandwich, strawberry cake (?) dessert which was really delicious and kit kat in the snackbox.

This was very similar to what I had as well! But I found the chicken sandwich very meaty and good!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
WOW! I was thrilled as this was my first time on the upper deck of a 744. I told the the stewardess about it but she didn't care at all!. It seems like she wanted me to get out of her sight as soon as possible!

Aww... it seemed like the crew wasn't at their best for this flight. Alittle disappointing. My own experience was quite different and the crew had been most polite to passengers. Anyhow, you did try out the LH on the plane you've always wanted to fly with! With the new LH product nonetheless! Good for you!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Thread starter):
I enjoyed this flight only because it was on a B744! Personally, given a choice, I would definitely fly GA anytime for this specific route.

Sorry to hear that the service standards were a little disappointing, and the meal really can't compares to what GA offers! Anyhow, you've been there and done that!

Congratulations on your latest achievement!

Cheers,
RvXKaz

Totally agree...the bigger the better...there is something about old school analog that should be cherished...kinda like having a real watch with moving arms instead of a digital one... There is just something more sophisticated about the old ways....

Make a nice change to get such a large aircraft on a short route, one of the great things about the 5th freedom rights.

Compliments for the good picture quality! ; snackbox seems alright too! Yes, German crews are more 'business friendly' and lack a bit of warmth usually.

She said alright and as I was snapping away, another stewardess came up to me and suggested that I should snap pictures of First Class too! That was the happiest day of my life because it was my first time stepping into a First Class cabin.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 1):
Yes, that's what I have chosen on the CGK-SIN route. I hope to get PTVs, too.

If i'm not wrong GA flies their B738 on all SIN-CGK flights so you'll definitely get seats with PTVs!

MUC? Or do you mean MXP? My relatives live there soI thought it would be nice to visit them before flying back home.

Once again, great trip report! I've been a fan of your TRs ever since, I love the simplicity and the high quality of the images.

I guess that's my style and future TRs will be as such.. unless I decided to do something radically crazy for a change! haha!

Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 3):
If they didn't have PTVs in Economy! .....but then I then I realized later on that your 744 has PTVs!

HAHA!
Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 3):

Well from a passenger's standpoint, the A380 is much better in comfort but from an aviation geek like me, the 747-400 is a true beauty!

Precisely!

Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 3):
Same here! They have the same thing in MNL, it adds to that airport-feel

Are you serious?

Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 3):

Ahh. You're like me, always traveling light. I was in ATL a while back and the TSA agent was shocked to know that we didn't have any checked-in bags (and we were on an international flight)

I won't be travelling light for my nxt flight though as I'll be away for 4 months!   But WOW! Only carry-ons for an international flight!
Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 3):
I have a whole collection of BPs! Hehe

Me too! Do you place them in a FB album or something?

Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 3):
Great trip report, as usual. Looking forward to more.

Hello Roy,
It's nice to see similar people reading and commenting on my TRs!   Thank you very much for doing so!

Quoting Quokka (Reply 4):

Another great report with good pictures.

Quoting Quokka (Reply 4):

Yes a proper boarding pass is so much more desirable than one printed on A4. Whenever I check in with EK at PER, they issue one automatically even though I have checked-in online.

Yes, that's the normal procedure when you fly out on SIN so I was surprised that LH didn't follow suit. Probably they're trying to be environmentally friendly by not issuing boarding passes to those who did online check in.

Quoting Quokka (Reply 4):

It's for decoration, not for use

Quoting Quokka (Reply 4):

With the late arrival they would have had less time to make the plane ready for the return journey, but I note that you did at least get a photo of your visit.

I like taking pictures of me in First Class as it motivates me to study harder

Hi RvXKaz!
Many thanks for telling me abt LH's promo!
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 5):
I'm really glad you took time to do up this precious TR on LH's 5th freedom flight, on their longhaul B744 product nonetheless! It was a delight to read as usual!

Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 5):

I know of someone who love to go to the airport just to watch the board 'flip' all day! LOL

He/She must be a COOL person!

Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 5):
I'm really glad you requested the real boarding pass! LH's boarding pass looks very classy! Did they give you back the bigger portion or the stub during boarding? When I flew with LH, they only gave us the stub back. Boo.

I got the stub back too
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 5):
Was there anyone at the door to greet the passengers?

There were two, and they were smiling!
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 5):

Sorry to hear that the service standards were a little disappointing, and the meal really can't compares to what GA offers! Anyhow, you've been there and done that!

That's right!

Hello Burj!
Thank you for reading my TR!
Quoting Burj (Reply 6):
Great trip report and nice photos... Cool to see what the coach cabin looks like with AVOD!

It certainly is!
Quoting Burj (Reply 6):
Totally agree...the bigger the better...there is something about old school analog that should be cherished...kinda like having a real watch with moving arms instead of a digital one... There is just something more sophisticated about the old ways....

Well said

Hey Eric!
Thank you for stopping by!
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 8):

I love those boards also. If you ever come to The Netherlands, you can find a big one with all trainsservices on it in Utrecht Central Station, afaik the only of this kind in my country.

Hmm, I was there in 2007 but probably didnt noticed it! Will definitely check it out if I happen to be in Utrecht once more!
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 8):
Compliments for the good picture quality! ; snackbox seems alright too! Yes, German crews are more 'business friendly' and lack a bit of warmth usually.

Ic, I'll take note of that!

Hi reggie!

Quoting RJtraveller (Reply 9):
Nice trip report and great pictures , !
remind me of my flight on the SIN to FRA route but i never flew to Jakarta with the LH744 cause i opted for GA or SQ, but i'll think i ill try it once or twice on the future

Anyway thanks for sharing hope you enjoy Jakarta, (including its traffic )

I overnight at CGK as I flew back the next morning.. Yes, the trip was done so I could try out LH!   But i've been to Jakarta a couple of times and the jam(macet) is HORRIBLE! haha!

It was my pleasure! Thank you for reading!

Hello lychemsa,
Nice to see you dropping by too!
Quoting lychemsa (Reply 12):
The regular legroom on LH long haul is clearly tight. Welcome to European / US airlines. They just cannot compete with Asian / Gulf carriers.

You're certainly right about that point!

Hi Sultanils,
Thank you for taking your time to read and comment on my report once more!
Quoting sultanils (Reply 13):
Really nice to see another report from you. Not too long with some good pics, that's how I like it

I'm glad you do!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 13):
Good on you to score a 5th freedom flight on LH's 744, and even on a retrofitted one. You were lucky that day mate!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 13):
Seems RvXKaz is a 'reliable' source for information

He would be happy to hear this!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 13):
Ha that's funny! Usually people tend to hold on to their bags instead of checking them in.

HAHA! I guess I'm slightly different from the normal people!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 13):

Isn't that the MUC flight at the gate (A343)?

It is..

Quoting sultanils (Reply 13):
WOW! indeed, you had a proper sit-in in a seat you normally will not ever be in (at least I won't...)

Well, I probably won't too but it certainly is nice to sit in First even if it was for less than 1 minute! haha!

Hi again, Mustafa,

Thank you for your reply. I like the way that you reply to each respondent. It is a good example of courtesy. I particularly like the attitude displayed when you say:

Quoting moosecamel88 (Reply 14):
I like taking pictures of me in First Class as it motivates me to study harder

That is exactly the right attitude. While there is no guarantee, it will certainly help you along the way.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 13):
WOW! indeed, you had a proper sit-in in a seat you normally will not ever be in (at least I won't...)

Nils, I truly hope that that is not true. Nothing in life is certain and I have witnessed painful set backs from time to time, but a positive attitude is more likely to see success. I know that it sounds trite, but I really hope that one day you are able to sit at the front end and not just for a photo at the end of a flight.

Stay well,
Roy (aka Quokka)

You're very welcome. I can't wait to see more from you. I always love seeing TRs on SE Asian Trips!

Quoting moosecamel88 (Reply 14):
Are you serious?

Yes, although, IIRC they only show 10 departures and 10 arrivals. Basically, MNL's T1 is very old fashioned. Blue floors, dark and dingy and their baggage carousels are rusty! But I have fond memories there, so I don't hate it.
Quoting moosecamel88 (Reply 14):
Me too! Do you place them in a FB album or something?

I have a special box in my room where I put all my airline memorabilias (airline mags, BPs, luggage tags, etc) If I have the time, I might make a scrapbook. I also have a "Delta" shrine in my room, honoring my favorite US airline   but CX also has a small portion, although I haven't flown with them personally, my dad and a couple of my friends fly with them quite a lot and they always give me stuff that has the CX logo on it. My friend even bought me a Special Edition 1:400 Scale CX 747-200!

It's a cultural thing.

Not necessarily. I noticed some negative aspects on my recent JNB-FRA flight, so far my longest on the A380. I will go into detail in a TR.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Reply 14):
If i'm not wrong GA flies their B738 on all SIN-CGK flights so you'll definitely get seats with PTVs!

Yes, I was told that the newest birds fly on that route. I just hope there won't be last-minute change to an ex-FR bird.

Quoting moosecamel88 (Reply 14):
MUC? Or do you mean MXP? My relatives live there soI thought it would be nice to visit them before flying back home.

No, I meant MUC.

Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 17):

Nice, I also have that one.

Hi

I am going to do this exact trip next week, for the very same
reasons as you! Glad that you have enjoyed your flight ! Hope to fly on both refurblished and non-refurbished 744s!

From 2012 Jan onwards, the only short haul 744 you can fly on is SQ!

Cheers

I was really excited to be on a B744 that I didn't realise the seats in Y were equipped with PTVs until a few minutes after I sat down in my seat!

Seems like you got one of the few renovated B744s. The new F looks nice on there.

I was under the impression that SQ is retiring all their 747s later this year?

check out Singapore to Hong Kong routing.

Yes, I just heard the same on some German forums. Rumours are that in addition to LH also SQ will operate the A380 between FRA and SIN.
Wonder what will happen with SQ FRA-JFK flight...

The four remaining planes are scheduled to be retired by March 2012, according to ATDB.
