London – Milan

What airline am I flying again? Lufthansa/bmi/Lufthansa Italia LHR-MXP

During my trip to China last month, I met up with an old friend (actually the one who took me drinking before my early morning flight to Dunhuang). She’s Italian, but works in Beijing. As she would be back in Milan in late July, she invited me over, an invitation I couldn’t refuse. After a good few hours of comparing the various flight options, I went with an outbound from LHR to MXP with Lufthansa/bmi, and a return on the same route with BA. I’d been getting plenty of email from LH in the past few months telling me about the great fares on the LHR-MXP route. Unfortunately, for the day I was looking for, the only cheapish fare was on the 0700 flight. I don’t like early starts, so generally have a “not before 0900” policy on flights, although it seemed that I’d have to break my policy for this flight.

Today’s route
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/map.gif

I left home at 0400 to walk down to the station to get the bus to LHR.

Waiting for the bus – ouch, so early
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1441.jpg http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1443.jpg

Thankfully, at this time in the morning, the bus was empty, and there was no traffic, so we arrived pretty much on schedule. I walked over to Terminal 1, and up to the check in area. As the title may suggest, I was slightly confused as to what airline I was flying on. I had booked the flight on LH.com, where it said the flight was operated by BD. The BD website said it was operated by LH. Hhmm. In T1, the LH desks are situated quite a long walk from the entry point, and my walk towards them brought me past the BD premium desks. I thought I’d try my luck, and the lady said it was fine for me to check in for the ‘LH’ flight here. My bag was tagged with a priority label, and I was given a window seat. You can’t normally check in for LH flights at BD desks, so it seemed like the flight was more BD than LH.

I made my way through security (the guy issuing plastic bags was in a terrible mood, riling up nearly everyone passing through), and then down to the lounge. On BD operated flights, I don’t have lounge access with LH Silver – I only have it when flying LH/OS/LX/LO. However, I was let in without a problem.

The lounge was fairly empty, so I grabbed some pastries, a coffee and some water, and took a seat in my favourite chaise-longue by the window.

There wasn’t a lot of activity this morning
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1446.jpg http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1447.jpg

After a very acceptable breakfast, I left the lounge, and headed for the gate.

As expected, there was a BD aircraft at the gate.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1453.jpg

We were called to board by row numbers at 0640.

July 2011
London Heathrow (LHR) – Milan Malpensa (MXP)
Lufthansa LH 3781
Operated by bmi British Midland (BD) for Lufthansa Italia
Scheduled: 0700-1000 (2h00m)
Actual: 0724-0923 (1h29m)
A319 G-DBCA

I was welcomed on board by a cheerful member of BD crew. There were two English cabin crew, and one Italian speaker. I made my way down to row nine where two girls in their early 20s were sitting in my seat (well, one of them was!). I told them that this was my seat, and they looked very confused. Obviously, they were more used to U2 and FR seating policies. I had to explain how the seat numbering worked! The flight gradually filled up until we had around 90% load, although I had a row of three to myself. The other side of the exit row aisle was full.

Legroom
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1455.jpg

The cabin of the aircraft, despite the BD paint on the outside, was unmistakably LH, with plenty of Cranes around the cabin. However, the headrests were that of LH Italia.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1456.jpg

In my seat pocket there was a BD safety card, and a LH magazine.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1458.jpg

In the middle seat pocket, there was also a LH Italia magazine.

The emergency exit signs were in English and Italian (no German)

Hmm, an interesting selection of airline memorabilia! We pushed back a little behind schedule, and taxied to the runway. (sorry, still haven’t managed to get my camera lens cleaned, so that annoying black blob is still on some photos).

Immigration was very quick. The baggage hall (along with the rest of the airport) felt very tired, and in need to a 21st century revamp.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/milan2011/CIMG1521.jpg

Despite the rather schizophrenic nature of the airline in question (and I’m still not sure if I flew BD, LH or LH Italia), the flight was good. Having the exit row to myself of a full flight was a nice perk too. With LH Italia going the way of the dodo pretty soon, I guess this aircraft will either be put back the way it was (BD style) or amalgamated into the LH fleet.

Hola Gabrielchew!

Interesting TR on LH? BD? LH Italia?

Great to see LH Italia is still operating these flights out of LHR, they will be missed by the end of October when they disappear.
I used to fly them as they always have great fares between BCN and MXP, and their business special for 129€ was very much welcomed to put 2000 M&M on my account.
Great pictures

Salut!

Roger

Hello,
and thanks for this interesting report.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
What airline am I flying again? Lufthansa/bmi/Lufthansa Italia LHR-MXP

This reminds me of the Swedish domestic route ARN-KLR. It used to be operated by SK only - but about a year ago Blue1 started operating the route for SAS, though not with its own aircraft, but with ATR 72's leased from Golden Air.
Alright, that's a SAS flight operated by Blue1 operated by Golden Air. Phew...

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):

My policy is "let the price, not the timing decide". Though, if a flight is leaving/arriving at such an hour that there no longer/not yet run buses to/from the airport, then it's perhaps not the best possible option.

As that BD aircraft was fitted with LHI headrests etc. It seems the aircraft is only used on LHR-MXP-LHR routing (according to this at least: http://data.flight24.com/airplanes/G-DBCA/ )

By the way, I do not remember reading what the special fare was? What did you pay for your flight?

I'm sorry to see the "real" Lufthansa Italia go - I had the time to score a flight on them last year, and I liked it very much.

Looking forward to the return journey.

There was a flight 2 hours later for an extra £20, which I should have gone for in retrospect. I was so tired that first day, I needed a siesta, which isn't good when you are out with friends sightseeing! I paid £72 for the flight, so not the adverised £49.

Hi Gab,

A very nice report about your confusing flight to Malpensa. I agree that this LH/BMI thingy has lead to some very weird "operated by" arrangements recently, with the LH group growing to be a paneuroepan aviation behemoth we can only expect the trend to continue - but then again for us these kind of flights are the bee's knees anyway!

No G&Ts that early in the morning?

Oh dear, the LCCs are growing up a new generation of travelers who have no idea of what flying once was...

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):

Hmm, that's quite bad. LHI (who still are the marketing carrier and whose service concept should be followed here) seems to really have gone downhill her - they used to have hot meals not too far ago... But then again with the operation about to be shut down anyway I guess they couldn't really afford that kind of service anyway.

Yep, kinda mind boggling. But generally it goes according to the AOC, so you flew with BMI.

Hey Gabriel, great report!

Nice to see a LH Italia report, seems like a nice airline. I'm thinking of might booking a flight with them soon, i.e before they shut down

Interesting, I thought you had lounge access on selected airports when flying with any *A carrier. Nice at least that they let you in the lounge. I'd always pictured airlines being very, very strict when it comes to accessing their lounges.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
The lounge was fairly empty, so I grabbed some pastries, a coffee and some water, and took a seat in my favourite chaise-longue by the window.

That's a pretty massive helping of snacks. Didn't they offer a more proper breakfast

Nice legroom! What brand of NC headphones do you have?

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
A sandwich (cheese and lettuce) was handed out, along with a choice of drinks.

That's very poor! I thought LH Italia served full hot meals on their flights, or perhaps LHR-MXP was too short?

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):

So you got a priority tag on a Silver Card? Then again the priority tagging should be taken with a pinch of salt :P

LHI (who still are the marketing carrier and whose service concept should be followed here) seems to really have gone downhill her - they used to have hot meals not too far ago... But then again with the operation about to be shut down anyway I guess they couldn't really afford that kind of service anyway.

I was full from the lounge, so the poor onboard catering wasn't a problem.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 7):
great report!

Thanks!

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 7):
i.e before they shut down

Better be quick. Lots of good fares around though

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 7):

Interesting, I thought you had lounge access on selected airports when flying with any *A carrier. Nice at least that they let you in the lounge. I'd always pictured airlines being very, very strict when it comes to accessing their lounges.

Because LH uses the BD lounge in LHR (not a LH lounge), there is a specifc arrangment only for certain airlines, not all *A. Before, when there was a LH lounge in T2, then you could use it with a LH Silver card for any *A airline. The last time I was in MXP, flying SQ, I used the LH lounge in the Schegnen zone before going through immigration.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 7):
That's a pretty massive helping of snacks. Didn't they offer a more proper breakfast

They had porridge, fruit, and crisps

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 7):
Nice legroom! What brand of NC headphones do you have?

They are Sony MDR-NC60. I've had them about 18 months now, no complaints

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 7):
So you got a priority tag on a Silver Card? Then again the priority tagging should be taken with a pinch of salt :P

I was very surpised she just tagged it like that. Great for my collection, although as you say, pointless!

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 8):
Thanks

No problem!

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 8):
I used to fly to Milan from London on the Vickers Viscounts. Many moons ago. In those days they served a hot meal.

A flight on a VV would have been cool. More interesting that A/B.

Quoting Burj (Reply 9):
Very cool.... Can't imagine how much confusion the BD/LH franken product causes...

Gld you enjoyed it

Hi Gabriel,

a good read here, although indeed confusing enought with the LH/LHitalia and BD performance on this flight. But, it was a flight very well ok it seems. The sandwich not looking good to me, maybe too small, but I know the flights are quite cheap so what else can you wish for.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
On BD operated flights, I don’t have lounge access with LH Silver – I only have it when flying LH/OS/LX/LO. However, I was let in without a problem.

Nice touch. Maybe the lounge staff was confused also

After seeing your city pics from Milan, I really feel that I need to visit the city also (somehow, the Italian cities lack my visits so far).

Regards
Eric

Cheers for the very nice TR. LH Italia only serve Dublin once per week to Milan-Malpensa. Shame I never got to try it as it is ending soon. In any case, good pics - thanks for posting. Brings back fond memories of my trip to Milan in 2006. I was also on the roof of Il Duomo!
Grazie,

Hello Gabriel,

Thanks for ventilating us your confusion in your nice report   And confusing it was! But most important: a good flight at a 'cheapish' price.

Well, if it was a 'real' LH flight, then lounge access should be fine.

Milan isn't so tourist friendly compared to a lot of other Italian cities, but is a plesant place for a few days.

Hi Gabrielchew - yikes I am so confused - is it BMI or is it Lufthansa? Quite confusing for passengers if they bothered to notice. Thanks for your report and pics - great stuff! Looks like you had a nice time in Milano. Great location for pics from the lounge in LHR. Looks like a place you could spend hours at. When's your next trip? Is it BOG? Cheers P/jet

Hi Gabrielchew,

Very enjoyable read! Had a lot of laugh when reading about your confusing flight.

LHI offers some decent fares on WAW-MXP-WAW route, so I might give it a try before it's not too late. If I do, there's going to be no doubt about which airline operates the flight, I'm afraid.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards,
SPLTA

The closer it gets to the end date, the lower the fares are going to drop I think.

Confusing but neat trip to the beautiful city of Milan!
BD really seem to become more of an equipment provider than an airline....pity they stopped serving AMS!

Cheers!

Well, I think they're trying to be a real airline (lots of new routes started recently), whilst also helping their Dad (or is LH their mum?) expand out of LHR.

What is she doing here Eastern Airways Jet, Milan was not yet part of its network?

By the way with Nice and Morocco added at BD network shall we expect something from you?

kind regards

Léonard
