Off To Norway, On A Classic. ARN-BGO SAS Y (pics)

Hello and welcome to my third report for this year. This time I will cover my short hop to Bergen on SAS in Economy Class. As always, the report will be accompanied with a lagom amount of pictures, that I hope you’ll enjoy!

Background

Having just returned from my two week holiday in Turkey [”Flying It Fake” On SAS, ARN-DLM in ”C” (pics)], I was starting to feel a bit bored again. This mainly due to the fact that most of my friends at home were either working or away on holiday as well. And to make matters worse, my mother had decided on engaging her annual summer projects, such as attempting to renovate the bathroom or laying new floor in the living room. So naturally, she didn’t want to have me sitting around at home all day, since I’m very unwilling of taking part in these ”projects”.

With another six weeks left of the summer holiday, my options for where to spend them were rather limited. I could either have do as I’ve always done, i.e spend them at my somewhat ”troubled” relatives down in Morocco [TAP Portugal, And The Moroccan Travesty (pics)]. Or I could pay a visit to some good old friends to the family, in western Norway. With the latter being the most obvious choice, I decided on giving them a call. Turns out that they were more than happy to have me over for as long as I pleased, so with that in mind I began my search for a ticket.

Booking

There are many options to choose between when traveling from Stockholm to Bergen, with SAS and Norwegian operating daily flights, and Finnair operating their 4x weekly service. Since it’s the middle of the summer season, looking for fares on DY and AY would be pretty pointless since they’d probably cost €90 or more, which is way too much for a 1h 20m flight, in my opinion. Instead my eyes were kept on SAS, as they offer cheap last-minute fares to all their destinations in Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, with ticket prices starting at €45.

After a quick search on SAS’s website, I managed to find a cheap last-minute flight for the next day for only €47. Since it was the middle of the night, not wanting the risk of not finding the fare again in the morning, I decided on sneaking out mom’s credit card from her purse and booked the flight in an instance. I also managed to find myself a cheap 1st Class train ticket to ARN for €14 with breakfast included. All in all, with a total price of €61 not bad considering I booked on such short notice.

July 13th 2011

I woke up around 6am after having only slept for three hours. Not good considering the fact that I had a long day of traveling ahead of me. Unable to fall back asleep, with two hours before leaving the house, I got up from bed and did some last-minute packing. When that was done, I headed downstairs for a shower, and a quick breakfast before leaving my house at 8am.

As I left the house, I began my 10 minute walk to the train station where my train to Arlanda via Sala would leave at 8.14am. Soon I arrived to the station, and after a quick wait my train arrived bang on time. The train ride to Sala was pretty uneventful, I managed to sleep for almost the entire duration of the 36m ride. Sadly though as we began arriving to Sala, the train conductor came over the PA announcing that the InterCity train to Arlanda was delayed by 30 minutes. This didn’t come as a surprise since these trains are delayed in 90% of the cases. I didn’t worry much though since I’d still have plenty of time to kill on Arlanda, and in case I would miss my flight SAS would re-book me on the next one (As a part of the SJ-SAS cooperation).

Soon my train arrived at 9.32, 33 minutes late. I was able to board the train, and make my way over to the 1st Class car as it was located at the rear end of the train. On my way, picked up my pre-ordered breakfast bag from the bistro car.

The bag consisted of a cheese sandwich, blueberry yoghurt, OJ, coffee, and an apple. It didn’t taste too well, the sandwich was dry and lacking content, apple was very hard and sour, the OJ and yoghurt tasted rather okay, but the coffee was terrible. It had a very thick and dark tar-like texture, and a very bitter taste. It really was that kind of coffee that could give you severe diarrhoea after only a few sips, so I decided not do drink it. I don’t really see why SJ offer this as an optional extra, since you can get these items for the same price from the Bistro.

The train ride was pretty uneventful, however there was a man and his whiny wife sitting at the row opposing me. They were both heading to ARN, and the wife wasn’t too happy about the delay. So she decided on taking out her aggressions on whining, and making bad comments about the people around her. Hence saying some pretty nasty things about me, when taking a picture of the breakfast bag. I decided not to bother since she would probably miss her flight anyway.

With our train being half an hour late, we had to go at a reduced speed due to meeting trains as we were going on a single-track railway. This resulted in an overall delay of 60 minutes, which was good as it meant me getting a full refund on the ticket. Soon I arrived to ARN, I quickly made my way up the escalators to SkyCity and continued to the SAS concourse at Terminal 5. As I had checked in the day before, I only had to go by one of the self-service kiosks to print out my BP and luggage tag. When I swiped my statusless Eurobonus card at the machine, my booking quickly appeared on the screen, and I was able to get the tag. My request for a printed BP was however denied, since I had chosen EB card as identification at gate. This wasn’t a big deal, since I don’t like paper boarding passes anyway, just a waste of paper really, and besides you have the risk of loosing them. I also recall this being a cost cutting measurement from the airline.

After printing out my tag, I went to drop my bag off at one of the counters. The line was very long, and it took me nearly 20 minutes until I could dump my bag on the belt. Since I was very tired, I didn’t bother on taking any pics of the departure area. Instead I headed direct to security. The security lines turned out to be as long as the ones for check in, and to make matters worse I ended up behind a family from central asia, consisting of 5 adults and 8-10 children, all of them traveling with oversized pieces of hand luggage, and all of them wearing metal objects.
I don’t recall ever encountering such a disorganised heap of passengers before, not even the fly-once-a-year half-drunk typo holiday crowd could beat them in terms of time consumption at security. It took nearly 20 minutes for them to clear security, and most people in the line seemed very annoyed by this. I just remember the face of the security officers, nearly loosing their patience close to just letting them pass without the scan. Each one of them had to go through the detector like five times. Luckily my stress levels were kept surprisingly low, and I managed to stay alive during this whole process.

At 11.50am I was through security, and free to stroll around in the T5 tax-free mall. I had around 15 minutes before my flight would board, so I decided to have look around in the tax-free mall for another five minutes before heading to gate 6A where my flight was departing. With not much to see around the mall, I headed straight for the gate instead and did some spotting along the way.

I arrived at gate 6A at exactly 12.05pm, only to find out that the aircraft hadn’t arrived yet despite the flight being scheduled to board at this exact time. No announcements were made either, and I was really starting to hope that we’d might have a cancellation. The fact is that, when I made the booking the flight was said to be operated by a B738, but when I got the e-ticket issued it said B734. The B737-Classics is perhaps my least favourite type, and I’ve had some pretty bad experiences on the B734 as a child, i.e seated at windowless rows and ruptured eardrums.

Soon though, I noticed a SAS Norway B734 rolling in towards our gate, and it turned out to be the aircraft operating my flight.

At 12.15pm boarding was called, and by the time the gate area was already packed with people. Since I was to be seated on the third row, I waited until last to board.

Around 10 minutes later most people had already stepped onboard the aircraft, so I made my way to the jetway handing the friendly agent over my EB card, that was swiped and I was handed over a small piece of paper with my seat number printed on it. I really wish this was the norm on all SAS flights, not having to use a printed BP. I thanked the agent and walked down the jetway as the last person.

As I stepped onboard this well aged B734, I was greeted by the friendly norwegian crew consisting of three female and one male flight attendant, all of them senior as is the case with all SAS crews. The cabin was fitted in 1980’s style Recaro seats (Believe it or not, they actually made them back then!), and I was quickly able to make my way over to seat 3A. A woman was already occupying the aisle seat, but the middle was to remain empty for the entire flight. Load today was 70% in Economy and 0% in Economy Extra, no cabin divider but still row 1 was blocked.

When I first sat down in my somewhat uncomfortable vintage Recaro seat, I was blown away by how great the legroom was. I estimated it to be at least 36 inches, which is more than enough for this short hop, hence me being 6ft tall.

Very soon, doors were closed, slides armed and the crew began the manual safety demonstration as the aircraft pushed back. The CFM-56 engines screeched into life as we began our taxi to runway 01R/19L, followed by a quick and powerful takeoff.

With the aircraft being at such light load, we were quickly able to pass 10 000 feet. Soon the seatbelt sign was turned off, and the crew sprung into action. I too decided to spring into action by running down to the lavatory for a customary visit.

As I made my way back to the seat, the crew had already parked their BOB trolley by my row. Feeling rather stuff after having eaten breakfast twice this morning, I decided to spurge out my last 20 SEK on a cup of coffee. Just for the sake of the report.

The coffee tasted pretty well, and with three re-fills it was well worth the money. I guess BOB isn’t too bad after all, but still they should’ve offered the coffee for free as is the case with all other airlines in the SAS-group. One thing that I found rather amusing was the fact that the crew announced the service offerings for Economy Extra as well, despite being no pax there on this flight.

I spent the remainder of this short flight watching some sitcoms on my Macbook, while from time to time having a peak out the window to enjoy the spectacular views of the scenery as we cruised over the ”Norwegian Alps”.

Very soon, the captain came over the PA announcing that we would shortly commence our descent and approach to Bergen Flesland airport, followed by a crew announcement kindly advising us to stove away all our and hand luggage, keeping the tray tables up and the seats in an upright position. So I quickly put away my belongings under the seat in front of me, and enjoyed the beautiful views of our approach, followed by a smooth landing.

The landing was followed by a quick taxi to gate 27, and soon the aircraft was docked to the jetway and the herd of passengers eager to get off the plane, were set free. The cockpit door remained closed during the whole de-boarding process, so without bothering to stay onboard I decided to leave the aircraft rather quickly.

I didn’t spend much time in the terminal as there wasn’t much to see, and besides that place is always packed! Perhaps time for Avianor to consider building a new terminal for BGO. Instead headed straight for the baggage hall where my bag was 3rd off the belt. After picking up my bag, I headed outside and took the overpriced SAS transfer bus into central Bergen, where I spent a couple of hours sightseeing before catching a bus to the remote village of Masfjorden, where I would be spending 18 days with the Bernard Family, our dear friends.

Conclusions

Not much really to say about SAS on such a short flight, but at least I was pleased with the efficient check-in and luggage procedures on the ground. I could imagine them being pretty cost efficient for the airline, hence allowing the passenger to spend less time at the airport.

This was my first flight on SAS Norge (even though they’re not really a separate division of the airline anymore), and the crew were very friendly, offering good service. It would’ve been nice though if SAS did offer free service to their Y costumers on short haul flights, and maybe we’ll might see that in the near future. All in all, it was a good flight, and I wouldn’t hesitate to fly SAS short haul again in the coming months!

Why not? Maybe you could earn some money by helping out mom with the work also?

90 Euro for 1h20min is not bad in general, of course, with the lowcost operators around it can be found cheaper on several routes, but it's not a bad deal.

That's a hit or miss it seems, iirc you take these breakfast many times before and were satisfied? What's up with the coffee then, did they change brand recently?

Apparently people purchase it in advance (you also did), so that is why they offer it?

Hmm, I would rather have ontime operations, because I want to receive a service delivery as expected on booking the ticket and schedule given. But at least it's good to see SJ offering refunds if they fail to deliver their customers according plan.

The 737NG (-800s) have also windowless rows.

You are standing on the toilet seat for this picture?! Can't say I agree with this position, where other people have to use it for neccesary purposes...

It's clear to me, SK in Y does not offer free drinks, so if I want it for 'free', I pay more for a tickets in Y-extra. Apparently the crew makes this clear to everybody (maybe somebody changes to Y-extra on their next flight). But I also think it's a standard text and used on all flights. The majority of passengers didn't notice that Y-extra was empty on that flight, I think.

Shame about security and all the problems there, I can imagine how stressed everyone would have been.

I like projects - though not any projects, but flying projects to be precise. Few days, many flights, you know...

As your flight had Norwegian crew it was apparently the inbound from BGO. Did you see many passengers deboarding the arriving flight?

SK seem to be at the forefront of reducing waste. I remember last year getting two flights on one boarding pass and think that was pretty revolutionary! Now you don't even need that!

Your photos really are great!
Why did that women on the train whine about you taking a picture of your breakfast? Was she just annoyed and complained on everything?
I would be happy to ride on a SK 734 rather than an -800. I wanna try them before they are gone!
I'll be doing a daytrip to BGO in late august, flying JZ and DY. Kinda looking forward to it now that i read your report!

Yes, youth under 26 only. Still a few years left for me, but I doubt they'll keep this concept that long.

They changed brand 18 months ago, some organic jibberish. I don't think it's the coffee itself but more the poor maintenance of the coffee machines, lots of calc makes the coffee go bitter even when it's fresh.

Actually I don't care, since I'd get to my destination anywya. Also SJ isn't a company you can trust, so I was glad to have the ticket refunded, and it also cut some waiting time at ARN.

That's good! Here in the UK it's up to each train company to decide on compensation. My region has one of the more generous - 50% back if the train is 30-59 mins late, full refund if it is 1 hour late or more, but all refunds in travel vouchers.

Yes, that's the EU regulations. All train operators in Europe must follow these rules. You also have the option to get cash in refund, but for that 1hr delay gives 25% cash and 2hr give 50%.

The price for the ticket itself was €10 and the optional breakfast was €4. Next time I'll eat breakfast at home or pack some sandwiches

That's a very smart thing to do, the kind of good, time-saving and hassle-reducing things that corporate world seems incredibly reluctant to implement... As usual Scandinavia leads the way.
