Condor Munich - Dalaman And Back

Hey everybody! After reading those trip reports and discussions here for many years I just decided to join the community and post my first trip report. So please be a little patient with me as I'm still trying out and have not made too many pictures - especially on the outbound flight

So just join me on my holiday trip to Turkey with the German leisure carrier Condor!

It was a quite fresh Monday morning when I arrived at Munich' s airport Terminal 1 to already find many passengers using the common Condor check-in area used for all the carrier's flights in module B. Luckily I have used Web check-in the afternoon before and could make use of a separate counter to leave my luggage. This special counter is reserved for passengers having used Web check-in or travelling in Condor's Premium Economy Class. There was just one person in front of me - so check-in was a breeze and I could continue through security to wait for boarding my Condor flight to Dalaman in Turkey.

DE 1442 MUC-DLM boarding pass

01st of August 2011
Condor DE 1442
Munich - Dalaman
06:45 - 10:40
Airbus A320

The boarding gate for my flight was located in module C and I could already find our Airbus A320 standing at the gate and being prepared for this morning flight. The Boarding Pass said boarding would begin at 06:00 but sitting at the gate nothing moved. It wasn't until 06:35 before the first boarding call was made - so a delayed departure was foreseeable. Boarding was done according seat rows and I joined the line to get on the passenger bridge and down to the Airbus. Welcomed ba a friendly cabin crew of one male purser and three female cabin attendants boarding was quite quick although the aircraft being very packed - especially with many families. Condor's Airbus Fleet has just undergone a redesign and the cabin was looking very bright and modern featuring blue cloth seats. Seat pitch however was quite mediocre   We pushed back approximately 15 minutes late and taxied out for take off. Flight time would be 2h30min and all anouncements very made in German and English - also the safety video was shown in both languages - very professional. The safety video was really funny - featuring celeb doubles. For example at the end an astronaut said: "Thank you for your attention! A small step for you but a great step for your flight safety!" For those who are interested, the video can be seen under the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daed7gAch6I

After take off we broke through the heavy bed of clouds and soon inflight service started. Headsets were offered for 3,50 EUR however what I really like with Condor is that you can use a normal one-plug headset to hear the inflight entertainment - so no need to buy one for me. A movie started while cabin crew started to serve a small breakfast which was quite good including warmed rolls:

DE 1442 MUC-DLM breakfast

A full drink service followed two times with flight attendants actively asking passengers if they wanted two drinks - for example water as supplement to a glass of tomato juice etc. - thumbs up for that! I had tomato juice and a cupa of tea for breakfast. Meals and all drinks are free on Condor with the exception of alcoholic drinks for which you have to pay.

Later flight attendants sold duty free items before our short flight already came to an end. We started approach to Dalaman from a north eastern course and approached Dalaman's runway coming in overflying the mountained country side. Touch down was only five minutes behind schedule so we made up most of our delay. Deboarding was through an airbridge into Dalaman's very modern and nice international terminal. Passport control didn't take very long and as we approached the baggage reclaim our suitcases were already circling on the belt

We spent some very nice days in Lykia World Oluedeniz - which is 1h30min bus drive from Dalaman airport. A very nice holiday resort surrounded by mountains being located in a very nice bay. Following are some pictures - also of our excursion to the Greek island of Rhodes that is just 1h30min away with hydrofoil.

The nice holiday came to an end and return flight came closer. Check in for the Condor flight back to Munich was also a breeze with four counters open and only four people in front of me. Here is a picture of Dalaman's modern check in area:

My flight back to Munich would board at gate 29 and here you can see a picture of our flight's aircraft taxiing in. It's a Boeing 757-300 painted in a special livery to celebrate Condor's 50 anniversary! I was very pleased to see that special aircraft operating my flight.

Next to our aircraft was a Condor Airbus A320 operating to Berlin and on the other side a Thomson Airways Boeing 737 bringing back holiday makers to Newcastle.

DE 6585 boarding pass

06th of August 2011
Condor DE 6585
Dalaman - Munich
21:05 - 23:10
Boeing 757-300

Boarding started slightly delated and I made my way through the airbridge. Boarding was through door 2L and I turned right to find my seat 18A. A range of newyspapers was offered at the boarding door just as on the outbound flight. Cabin had a very warm atmosphere featuring blue and yellow holiday mood colours.

Condor Boeing 757-300 cabin

Seat pitch was also considerably better than on the outbound Airbus! Flight time was announced to be 2h40min and we taxied out with a slight delay. Having reached one end of the runway wind conditions changed and we had to taxy to the other end to take off in the opposite direction. So in the end we took off with a delay of half an hour into a clear night sky. Service on this flight consisted of a hot dinner service and two drink rounds - the first drink round only offering cold drinks.

DE 6585 dinner

Then trash and empty meal trays were collected before a second full drink service also offering hot drinks was conducted. Overall this procedure was adding to a very relaxed and unrushed service.

DE 6585 tea service

Descent into Munich started over the Austrian city of Salzburg and we touched down 5 minutes late at the end. Having parked at a passenger bridge the friendly cabin brew said good bye offering candies at the door - a nice touch.

So that's it - I hope you enjoyed reading my first trip report here. In overall I really liked those two Condor flights and think that the carrier is one of the best and most professional leisure airlines flying around - also with the advantage of being able to collect Miles & More miles!

Next time I will also try to take more pictures - my next flights coming up this September!

No reason what caused the late boarding? Overslept crew maybe?

Ouch... will also the 753 get an updated interior? Seatpitch was already cramped imho.

That's good indeed, although the meal looks small for this duration of flight. Did you care about pre-ordering a 'premium meal' on DE? I did and was very pleased with it.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 1):

Yes it wasn't the biggest portion, but enough. I always wanted to try SunExpress - a little bit more exotic than Condor and I read somewhere that they enhanced their catering only some time ago.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 1):
Yes, I remember that from my DE 753 flight last year.

I really found the Boeing cabin cosier and more comfortable than the just redesigned Airbus cabin.

I try to make a lot more pictures on the next trip   I'm really looking forward to it - it will be a SWISS / Edelweissair journey and therefore be somewhat more interesting than the Condor trip. SWISS really is one of my favourite airlines!

So stay excited!

Nice report and pictures, thanks for posting your first report, more to follow in the future I hope!

- The meals have looked reasonable for a charter company, not unexpected to pay for booze, so all good.

Nice to catch a 757-300, still missing from my flown log, Condor might be the carrier to get this resolved.

thank you - nice to hear that my trip report was quite readable and enjoyable
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 2):
No reason what caused the late boarding? Overslept crew maybe?

It was quite poor that there was no information on what caused the delayed boarding. Perhaps it was an overslept crew   but I also think they needed quite long to load all baggage because pushback was delayed as luggage was still in progress of being loaded.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 2):
Ouch... will also the 753 get an updated interior? Seatpitch was already cramped imho.

I have heard nothing that the 753 is also planned to get an updated interior. However I really found the 753 more cosier and comfortable than the new airbus interior. Pitch on the 753 was better and enough for me, but I also think the seats in general were upholstered more comfortable. So in my opinion no need for an update
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 2):
That's good indeed, although the meal looks small for this duration of flight. Did you care about pre-ordering a 'premium meal' on DE? I did and was very pleased with it.

The meal was quite small but in the other way there are so many scheduled airlines flying around offering nothing more than a sandwich on a flight of comparable length - so I think it's quite okay. I looked at the premium meals and found they sounded nice. However I decided against ordering one and instead getting surprised by the regular offering. Did you know Condor now also offers a dedicated Premium Economy Class in the forward cabin on its short and medium haul flights? This offers an empty middle seat, premium meal, free alcoholic beverages etc. However on both of my flights not one passenger seemed to have opted for this travel class as the whole cabin was standard economy. Sad for Condor...

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 2):

Congrats! Nice one. Do you know why DE operates both types on this route?

I think the monday trip is operated by the Airbus 320 while the saturday rotation is flown with the bigger 753 - perhaps because more holiday makers prefer departing on the weekend?!

I remember reading that trip and really enjoyed it. Perhaps the 753 was more cramped for you because you may be taller than me?
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 2):

Yes I think most leisure carriers, mostly in the UK and the Benelux countries, changed their inflight service concept to become more like a LCC carrier on which you have to pay for food and drinks. Luckily the holiday airlines in the German speaking area (also Austria and Switzerland) continue to provide quite good inflight service!

Departurex

Is this true?! Free of charge?! I flew the last time 2-3yrs ago with DE on much longer intra-european sectors (like HAM-AYT), but was always only served with a small standard sandwich.

I'm happy that in Europe we still get meals on many flights. And hopefully this won't change in the near future so we'll still have something to discuss
Quoting debonair (Reply 8):

Yes that's not good with Condor: you'll only have access to online check-in if you make an advance seat-reservation which costs you 10 EUR!

Yes - those meals really were free of charge. Perhaps in the last years Condor has decided to improve its service? That's a good idea because so they can distinguish themself from other charter carriers e.g. Air Berlin which has downgraded its catering to free sandwiches / bagels only on European flights - even the very long ones to the Canary Islands!

You're right - Condor isn't fully a charter airline but more some kind of a scheduled airline concentrating on leisure destinations and leisure passengers. All their flights can also be booked individually and not only with a tour operator's package. Online check-in is only possible for passengers with advance seat reservation for which you have to pay 10 EUR per person per segment. However for me it was worth paying that extra and getting the possibility to pick my preferred seat   When doing advance seat reservation online you may pick your preferred seat from the seat map. Following this when doing online check-in the system already knows your seat reservation and you cannot change seats anymore.

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 13):

Yes they do also feature this service. In my opinion almost all "charter carriers" in Germany do offer some version of farewell candies etc. Two years ago on TUIfly I was given a packet of gummy bears and several years ago LTU offered some chocolate...

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 13):
By the way, did you buy your holiday as a package deal or did you book the flight and hotel separately?

I bought the holiday as a package deal via German tour operator Schauinsland Reisen. So pick up from the airport to the hotel and back was also included.
