Usually, my family and I go together on a trip in the german summer holidays. So planning started in april with a nice discussion round, which destination it will be.
After some destionations around the mediterranean ( PMI MAH etc.), which have been terribly expensive with over 300€ for a return trip on direct flights, we deciced to fly to the United States.
Luckily I found a acceptable fare on LX with the routing LUX – ZRH – MIA return, so I booked these flights for my family.
To complete the trip preparation we booked the Best Western Ft Lauderdale, which has direct access to the beach, and a rental car, because you can't do Miami and suroundings on public transport.
I never understood why they constructed the new airport so large, but well for the passengers comfort it is just perfect. Check-in was a breeze, as there were no queues at all at the two open LX counters and I already preselected the seats during OLCI.
Security was also done in a rush, as I normally prepare my things in a way that, I am through in a minute.
Airside, there is not that much to do so I had a quick look around the shops and then just sit down in the waiting area and relaxed.
Nice to have the glass ones in LUX, always give you a good view on the bird.
The flight:
LUX – ZRH
Swiss
RJ100
HB-IXW
10:40-11:18
Boarding was soon finished and we made the short way to the runway for take-off, during which, the safety presentation was done manually.
The take-off itself was a very powerful one as usual on the RJ100.
Shortly after take-off I noticed the tail of the B747-8F next to the Cargolux facilities, bugger I couldnt get a picture of it, but well.
The service started soon, a drinkrun and a piece of swiss chocolate in this case. I went for coffee and orange juice, a good combo to start the day.
The flight passed quickly and too soon, the first officer announced that the decent already started and that we will land in about 10minutes.
The rural landscape on approach to ZRH is really nice, and on short final there are nice ads cut into the fields.
As expected we arrived at the regional stands, meaning also a busride back to the terminal.
Unfortunately the busses here are covered in advertisements so the view wasnt perfect at all.
After some 3 mins ride we arrived at the main terminal building.
As our connection time was less than 90mins, we hurried up and fastly arrived at the transit train, which brought us to the international satelite, where all the LX longhaul starts from.
Inside the train are speakers, which keep playing animal noises. Something not usual, but nice.
While arriving at the satelite, something really nice happened.
The queues were quite long at the security check-point, so the agent who checked our boarding passes leaded us to the crew screening point, where was hardly no traffic at all. Thumbs up for that.
There we were through in a couple of minutes and soon after we settled down near our gate, the boarding started.
Down the nice glass jetways into the aircraft: I wonder why they use only one of the two jetways, even the load in all classes was very good.
The flight:
ZRH – MIA
Swiss
A340-300
HB-JHG
13:15-18.10
As expected earlier, the load in Economy was 100% with most of the passengers travelling to MIA for holidays.
The whole boarding process took about 30mins.
We had to wait for about 10mins to takeoff, because nearly all longhaul flights of Swiss depart at the same time in the early afternoon, so there is always a „rush hour“ around that time in ZRH.
The takeoff run was quite long as our A330-300 was nearly at max payload for the trip over the pond to Miami.
Directly after the takeoff, all planes do a sharp left turn to keep the noise level above the Zurich down, but this also gives you a nice view of the city and the airport:
After that I started exloring the new IFE. The selection of movies and TV shows was not bad, but ICE and Krisworld are still miles ahead. But the most important channel for me was the airshow anyway, which is the latest generation one on LX.
The next hours I watched some movies and listened to my iPod.
Drink runs were performed a lot of times and about 6 hours into the flight, some delicious Mövenpick icecream was given to the passengers.
After returning the rental car to the specially designed return centre, a shuttle bus brought us quickly to the international terminal. We arrived there about two hours before our flight and at the LX check-in counters, there was already a long queue of people, most of them being holidaymakers, who still think they have to be there at the exact beginning of check-in time.
I already checked in online for my family, but we still had to get the boarding passes and drop of our baggage.
After that done, we proceed to security as there was not much to do landside.
Security was a breeze, because the staff there was really nice.
I also experienced the Bodyscanner, which I personally dont mind at all.
Airside I firstly had some lunch and then walked around the shops to get rid of my last few USD.
About 40mins before boarding started, I sat down and just relaxed.
The LH A380 flight to FRA was delayed by more than 5 hours and even departed after our ride to ZRH.
The boarding was announced bang on time and as I arrived at the gate there was a huge queue, so I just settled down again and waited for some time as i didnt have much handluggage to store away.
The flight:
MIA – ZRH
Swiss
A340-300
HB-JHI
19:40-10:20
I was greeted by some middle aged female F/A at the door and made my way to my seat.
Boarding took quite long on this, again totally full flight and when everybody was seated, the maitre de cabine welcomed all passengers in english, french and german on board.
Shortly afterwards, the safety presentation was shown and we taxied to the runway.
A380 next to us, the name Zürich is a nice coincidence isnt it?
As this was a red-eye flight, I took a nap after the meal, but I cant sleep well on airplanes so after about 2-3 hours of halfsleep, I watched some movies.
This time we took a northern route instead of the more south one on the outbound leg.
The crew performed several drink runs on this flight too, which I appreciated.
The breakfast service started about 70mins before landing, with some nice french landscap to fly by.
As we had some 6 hour layover, we went and did the airport tour with a bus, which was amazing, because in ZRH you are allowed to step off the bus and take pictures of planes right next to the runway. After that I went to the viewing terrace and stayed there for a few hours.
Some shots from the tour and the platform:
XL airways in Miami air colourscheme:
The flight back to LUX was just a normal shorthaul flight and I was too tired to take many pictures.
Conclusion:
LX is a nice carrier and offers a decent product in longhaul Y, but also I could not see much difference to LH, even they are often called the better LH .
The A333s are in a excellent condition and the legroom is fine for a longhaul flight.
I also liked the RJ100 flights, which are perfect for some short intra-european sectors.
Transit in ZRH was a breeze and I would definately choose LX again in the future.
A huge thank you for my brother, who did many pictures for this report.
Thank you a lot for reading.
Comments and questions are highly appreciated.

An excellent trip report, bravo! I guess the "test" of a quality trip report is if it enables the reader to feel like he's experiencing the trip alongside you and this one more than exceeded that test!
I noticed the safety card seat pocket said it was an A330.
Quoting luxair747SP (Thread starter): Because of a thunderstorm, MIA was closed for about 45mins, so we circled around the bahamas which gave me some nice views.
Quoting luxair747SP (Thread starter): Finally we landed after more than 10 hours in the air, quite a stretch for A333.
Slightly scary, given the A330-300's range! Though of course I'm sure if the thunderstorms raged much longer the aircraft would have been diverted to another airport.

Hi Johannes.
that was a very enjoyable trip report. Was the catering tasty>? Seems like a few of the European carriers are raising their game to keep up with the Gulfies.
Nice to see LUX airport too, always been a bit curious!

Hi Johannes,
Nice trip report an a very enjoyable read. very nice to compare against my MUC-MIA-MUC run last December. For comparison, reed my BRU-MUC-MIA report on Lufthansa here Lufthansa, There Is No Better Way To Fly! (by MSS658 Jul 5 2011 in Trip Reports) . Catering looks IMO better on LH than LX, the rest almost mirrors my flight on Lufhansa.
Thanks for dedicating me to the UA 767 to me as well .

That's the way it should - you cannot touch it unintentionally. LH should have a look.
Quoting luxair747SP (Thread starter): About one hour before landing in MIA, the second food service started, this time a pizza slice, which was rolled and some drinks.

Great products compared to the competitors on the same routes.

Hi Johannes,
Good to see your Miami TR up. Looks like two very decent transatlantic flights with LX - high quality service and what looks like a rather comfortable seat with good legroom. Well done, Swiss!
BTW what's up with your pictures? They all seem to be quite heavily compressed with lots of compression artifacts. Did you do that yourself or is it Picasa playing some shenanigans?
Quoting luxair747SP (Thread starter): After that, we went for a breakfast to the selfservice restaurant on the first floor, which gives you excellent views of the apron.

Well, I fail to see why somebody would mind. Then again I'm a Finn, and our nation is particularly famous for people (especially the male ones) who never give up an opportunity to frolic around naked... .
Quoting luxair747SP (Reply 1): The dinner service started about 50mins later and consisted again of chicken or pasta.

They actually accompany a short film which is projected onto the tunnel wall, showing Heidi. It is a bit kitsch, but it's what's many tourists associate with Switzerland & it's always amusing to watch the reactions when it's played. A mixture of groans & delight!

Yep that is it, but now im using more the bridge in Grevenmacher and the A1 to get to the airport.
Quoting SR4ever (Reply 18): Thx a lot for this TR. I fly LUX-ZRH (and beyond) once in while, to the extend that I feel almost home on that sector

Hi Johannes,
always nice to read a TR about Swiss long haul, great job! I
hope to get a chance to fly LX again soon in any class. Their Y product looks great as well. But I think that the current logo is better than the new version that they are introducing now.
And the photos from ZRH are great, the SQ A380 looks great.

LX looks like ok, also the RJ´s, something what I like
Yeah was a nice flight on the RJ, the 2-3 layout is a good way to travel

Hi Johannes,
Nice TR of Swiss and visiting Miami, thanks for sharing.
Quoting luxair747SP (Thread starter): Because of a thunderstorm, MIA was closed for about 45mins, so we circled around the bahamas which gave me some nice views.
This reminds me of my first trip to Miami and to US, I was flying with PanAm and we also had to circle around something like 1 hour because of the thunderstorms, I still remember the clouds over the Miami area.
I enjoyed your TR and Hard Rock Cafe Miami is a good reason to visit there again.
