Back to Dubai, with a last few sights before flying back home in Europe.

The Bus ride from Sharjah to Dubai was faster than the outbound journey in the morn ing, as I opted for a Bus+Metro combination, via Raschidya.

XVII. Some Mixed City sights

While I was already very familiar with modern Dubai, and hence my focus on older Dubai this time, I also toured some recent areas.

Jumeirah Beach, next to The Walk and the Marinas, looking Palm Jumeirah and The Atlantis:

Marina/Media City area (looking Southwest), seen from the Atlantis monorail station, at the very end of Palm Jumeirah

Still from the Atlantis Monorail station, view to Downtown Dubai (with Burj Khalifa) and the Burj-al-Arab (looking Northeast)

Going back to older Dubai with Metro, after passing the Financial Centre area , along Sheikh Zayed Road and down the Emirates Towers.
Bastakya (Heritage area), seen at night.

XVIII. New Hotel for New Year’s Eve

While I had been staying in Bur Dubai (Arabian Courtyard Hotel, see previous section), I decided to spend the very last night closer to the Airport, as I would be flying early.

Even though this would be a short night, especially as this was New Year Eve, I would need decent sleep, and having a room very close to DXB would help. And as this was NYE, I didn’t want to risk any cab availability problem or traffic panic. Well, I faced some stressful traffic situation in the end, but not this way...

In the end, I went for Premier Inn. Not as luxurious and glamourous as Arabian Courtyard, but still clean and comfy. Most other hotels in that area were full.

I also tried to book a room in the Airside Hotel of Terminal 1, but that was not possible owing to regulatory constraints.

Views of my room:

Views from the Roof, to Festival City, Downtown Dubai (with Burj Khalifa) and Financial Centre

XIX. New Year Eve Celebration

Round 10pm, I headed to Emirates Metro station nearby, bound for Burj Khalifa, as this was the place which I had selected to celebrate the year switch. Jumeirah Public beach, next to the Marinas, was also considered, as there would be also be fireworks at the Atlantis.

But in the end, I went for Burj Khalifa, where the show sounded very promising.

Burj Khalifa Metro station was closed when it was time for me to step down there, as there were crowds of people flocking from the platforms to Burj Khalifa.

No choice but to leave at the next station (Business Bay), and then flock with other through a worksite, somewhere between Walik Blvd and Emaar Blvd.

It was a dark and dusty mess, but in the end, I managed to reach The Old Town Island, where loads of people were already waiting for the H Hour.

Then the show started, bang on time:

Game over:

It did’t last too long (10min), but I can assure you that it was just great.

Getting back to the Metro and then to my room was another story.

As Burj Khalifa station was packed, I chose to walk straight away to Business Bay.

But it was also packed, packed and nothing but packed, with stiff compression from the concourse entrance until the tickets gates. It ook me 1 hr to get to those gates, after a feeling like a sardine in the tin.
Sheikh Zayed Road nearby wasn’t any better, jammed everywhere:

The Metro ride was way more relaxing than the “check-in” at the Station, as I was travelling Gold Class.

But Silver Class was another story, and at various stations, soldiers had to be called to enforce the women-only area.
Metro was supposed to close down at 2.30 or so, and I managed to make it 1 hour ahead of it.

XX. Nights sights of DXB Airport

Right before walking up to my room, I made a from my hotel entrance a few pics of DXB (Terminal ), in the “night hubbing peak” of EK.

In the end, I dived into my bed round 2.00, and woke up round 04.30
It was time to take the shuttle bus to Terminal 1.

To be continued...
