Parisian City Break à La Air France. ARN-CDG Y Rt

Bonjour fellow a.netters and welcome to my last report for this summer. This report will cover my most recent weekend trip to Paris on Air France in Economy Class. As always the report will be accompanied with a lagom amount of pictures that I’ve shot through my newly acquired wide-angle lens.


Background


Paris is a city I’ve been not very keen to visit again. My first visit was back in 2008 during an 8 hour layover at CDG, when I decided to catch the overpriced AF shuttle into town. The visit turned out to be quite a fiasco since I ended up getting lost while attempting to walk all the way to La Defense, my suitcase broke down and fling opened in the middle of the street (resulting in some pretty dirty laundry), and I got kicked out from a perfume store. The worst part was of course the fact that I missed out on all the main attractions, apart from the arc de triumph of course.

Since that fateful day Paris to me have been more like an overpriced, overrated touristic theme park, rather then a city and I was not keen on setting my foot there again... Until recently...

Booking

At the beginning of this summer, I received an email from Air France stating their early bird special campaign for European destinations. Flights were to be booked by june 20th, and the travel period started at August 22nd. The fares looked quite reasonable, until the non-stop service to CDG caught my attention. €75 for a return trip ARN-CDG on August 22nd to 25th, with the outbound flight leaving in the morning, and the return coming back in the late evening. An offer I simply couldn’t refuse, mostly since flights to CDG often start at twice that price.

Since this was a weekend trip, I was not in the mood for spending 4 nights in Paris alone (and not to speak of the hotel costs), so I began my search for a suitable travel companion. Luckily my best friend Farid was the perfect man for the job, he was more then excited to come along since Paris was on the top of his list for cities to visit.
So now came the challenge to find a suitable hotel in the city. Paris haven’t been known for cheap hotels, but luckily I managed to find us a nice three star hotel in La Republique for the insanely low rate of €110 per room for three nights, and on top of that I had a 10% student discount on hotels.com.

All this took place in less than half an hour, and after some smooth typing on the AF website and hotels.com, my VISA card was charged and confirmations issued. Total cost per person for this 3 night weekend was €129,40 now that’s what you’d call a killer deal!

August 22nd 2011


So it was time to leave for Paris. Since our flight was leaving ARN at the ungodly hour of 6.50am, I had to spend the night over at Farid’s place in order to catch the 3.55 Swebus Airport shuttle to ARN. With a price of €14 for a 90 minute ride, I wouldn’t call it cheap but it’s at least the most reliable mean of transport for getting to ARN from Västerås. Forget SJ (unless you’re flying SAS) since you’re most likely to get stuck in a delay next to some whining old b**ch, and miss your flight.

Anyways, I woke up around 2.30am after some three hours of sleep, mostly obstructed by the usual pre-flight excitement. This was followed by a quick shower and some breakfast, before catching a ride with Farid’s mum to the bus station at 3.25am. We arrived at the bus station around 10 minutes later, only to find that our bus had already arrived.
Since we had booked our tickets online the night before, we only had to present our booking numbers for the driver to type in. The driver however was just as tired as we were, so he didn’t bother typing our numbers. Instead he just had a look at it, and let us board the bus. In other words we were allowed to travel for free this time, since Swebus Airport tickets are valid for three months after purchase. Not so bad after all

The 90 minute bus ride was smooth, and at 5.25am we arrived at Arlanda Terminal 5 bang on time! Since we were only traveling with hand luggage this time and having done OLCI the day before, we decided to head straight for the Air France self-service machines to print out our BP’s.

Soon we arrived at the crowded AF-KLM check in area, and I went off to one of the machines to type in our e-ticket numbers. Sadly however the machine refused to print out our boarding passes despite several attempts. So in the end, we had to queue up behind the Economy Class counter like everyone else’ish. The line was very crowded and moved slow, but for a slight consolation the Premium line didn’t seem to move at all.

After 15 minutes of queueing it was finally our turn to check in. We handed over our passports to the friendly agent, and received our BP’s printed on proper paperstock. After our check-in formalities were done, we headed straight for security which wasn’t much of a breeze, but we were able to get through in less than 5 minutes.

Due to the delayed check-in procedures we only had 20 minutes to kill before our flight was to board, which of course meant some strolling around the tax-free shops at ARN. To be honest I really don’t like this part of ARN with the florescent lightning and the low ceiling. With not much to see around the shops, we headed back to our gate.

We arrived at our gate around 5 minutes prior to boarding, and with the place looking quite full we would expect a healthy load on this morning flight. Soon boarding was called and families with children were allowed to board first, then Skyteam Elites and finally the rest of us Y pax. As usual Farid and I decided to wait until most pax had boarded.

Soon came our time to board the plane as the last group of passengers. Our boarding passes were handed over to the friendly gate agent, who turned out to be the same woman who did our check-in, something Farid found very interesting. I didn’t bother telling him that this is a common practice after all.

As we walked down the crowded jetway, I could see the lead purser of the flight greeting passengers at the door in a very friendly manner. Of all the times I’ve flown Air France I’ve never encountered crew being so friendly. A nice first impression I thought, until it was time for me to board. I was expecting a smile and ”good morning” from the male purser, but instead the moment I entered the aircraft he instantly turned his head away, and began picking his thumbnail.

I was quite stunned by this silly and unprofessional behaviour. Could it have been the camera hanging around my neck, or did the man simply not like me? That is a question still unanswered, nevertheless to say I’m pretty used to this kind of behaviour, so without bothering much about it I continued to my seat.

Soon we settled in to our seats A&B in row 8, the first row behind the curtain. The cabin on this old A320 was fitted with the old-style Y seats, they’ve been around since the 90’s. In terms of comfort however I much prefer these over the newer ones with the flexible headrests.

Load factor on this flight was close to 100% in both classes, I didn’t notice a single empty seat in Economy Class and Business was pretty full too. Legroom was estimated at 34 inches which was more then enough for me. I don’t really care much for legroom despite being 6ft tall.

A very rainy ARN this morning.

Soon boarding was completed, and the captain came over the PA welcoming everyone onboard. Flight time today was estimated at two hours and thirty minutes, there would however be a 15 minute delay due to slot restrictions at ARN.

At 7.05am, the aircraft pushed back 15 minutes behind schedule, and the CFM-56 engines spooled to life. Following pushback was a manual safety demonstration conducted by the crew. Announcements were made in english, french and some recorded ones in swedish. Soon the aircraft reached runway 01L/19R, and made a slow and heavy takeoff.

The heavy takeoff was followed by an equally heavy and slow climbout over the suburban Stockholm. I’m pretty sure the reason for this slow clim was for fuel saving measurements. I don’t however see a point of flying through rainclouds for such long time since the amount of fuel saved on the slow climb was most likely to have been wasted on the wing anti-icing systems.

After some 45 minutes in the air, the captain came over the PA informing us that we have reached our cruising altitude of 39 000 feet. Meanwhile, the crew rolled out the trolleys and sprung into action (or ”Soon the friendly crew start the show”, as our dear friend from Finland once put it).

It has been three years since I last flew Air France i.e before the rebranding of the products, and the swoosh logo. So I was more then curious to find out whether they still offered the same proper service in Y on flights longer then 2h 30m, or if it too had been cannibalised. The e-ticket did after all state ”breakfast” as the meal offered on this flight, so naturally I was expecting the DIY breakfast tray of the olden days. This soon turned our not to be the case, when the cute blonde F/A serving our section came around with the ”trays”.

The breakfast was by no means what you’d call substantial, in fact it was barely even a breakfast at all. The croissant and chocolate muffin were pretty small and dry, but with the Nescafé provided it was possible to wash them down. The blueberry yoghurt tasted pretty fine though, with some nice pieces of blueberry it became the ”main event” of this meal. Jus d’orange was nothing special either, although the taste was pretty mild and not sour which I like, especially in the mornings.

According to Farid’s observation, the passengers in Business Class received a full hot breakfast, crème brulé and a kanelbulle.

All in all the breakfast was a huge letdown as it wasn’t good nor filling. Neither did they offer any additional croissants, only Nescafé and jus d’orange were offered which I gladly accepted. Then again, I shouldn’t complain too much since the flight only cost me €37,50 and the fact that SAS would’ve either served you a nice bowl of cabin air, or ripped you off another €10 on some overpriced breakfast baggie.

Feeling not so stuffed, I decided to head for my usual walk down the cabin and make a visit to the lav.

There was quite a long queue to the lavatory, so I decided to skip it after a while. To make things worse I had a very ”Larry David” like experience when a man from Business Cut everyone in line to get to the rear lav first. It’s just silly how some simpletons think of themselves as the owner of the plane just because they’re in the premium cabin...

Since I was feeling pretty tired this morning, I decided to go for the same treatment as our friend Eric did on his recent flight to OSL, i.e large consumption of caffeine beverage. So I shoved my way down to the rear galley to request another cup of Nescafé. As I arrived, the crew were all gathered around on the jumpseats, savouring the leftover Business Class breakfasts.

When I brought up my request for another cup of coffee to the senior female F/A, she gave me a strict and serious ”Non!” before looking at me angrily for five seconds. I on the other hand stood there all stunned by this, until the entire crew burst out in big ”french” laughter telling me it was just a joke. My face was turned red like a tomato, but I could do nothing more than to laugh about it as well. Meanwhile my coffee was prepared and promptly handed over to me, I thanked the crew and headed back to my seat. What a funny lot of people!

I spent the remainder of the flight playing around on Farid’s  iPhone, while he was asleep. Soon afterwards the aircraft began its descent to Paris Charles Du Gaulle Airport. What I found interesting was how steep the descent was, I suspect this too is a cost cutting measurement as no engine power was required.

Our landing was followed by a 10 minute taxi to our gate at Terminal 2F. Since I was seated on the left-hand side, I didn’t get any good views for spotting. Not very nice since I always enjoy watching the heavies at CDG. Soon we arrived to our gate, and as usual Farid and I waited to disembark as the last. On my way out, I thanked the crew for the flight and asked for a quick peak in the cockpit which was granted.

As we made our way up the jetway, we were directed towards an exit leading out to a bus waiting for us to take us to the Schengen part of 2F. The bus was quite packed, but luckily the ride was only two minutes long. Upon arrival we made our way up the escalators and out through the baggage reclaims hall.

By now we really felt like it was 4pm in the afternoon, even though it was only 9.50am. In other words we were experiencing a jetlag despite having just traveled for little less then 3 hours in the same timezone. Suppose turning your day rhythm can have that effect.

Since it was five hours until we would be able to check in at our hotel, we decided to take the RER train into town. The ticket was rather overpriced at €9.10, if I would’ve known it cost that much I’d rather have taken the Air France Coaches for €11 since they offer better value for the money, and besides it’s much ”fancier” to travel on an airline branded transfer service rather then some dull subway train.

At 10.45 we arrived in central Paris. Since I wasn’t sure on where to go, we got off the train at Chatlèt since it was said to be closest to our hotel. After some hours shopping, eating and sightseeing it was now time to head for our hotel. Finding the hotel didn’t turn out to be the easiest thing. It took us nearly three hours to find the darn place.

The hotel exceeded all our expectations. The standard was surprisingly high for a hotel costing only €15 per person/night, and not only that was the location great. What I didn’t like was the view from the room, as it faced a narrow back alley and not the street. Not a big deal really since we would only spend the nights there.

Farid and I spend four fabulous days in the city, with some shopping, sightseeing and clubbing. Here are some pics from our stay:

August 25th 2011


After four wonderful days in Paris, it was sadly time for us to travel back home.

The day did not start well... We woke up around 11.30am with a terrible hangover after a wild night of partying. To make matters worse we only had 30 minutes to vacate the room, unless if we were willing to pay €180 for an extra night. So Farid quickly packed up our stuff while I jumped into the shower. At 11.55am we left the room, and headed downstairs for check-out. Soon our keys were returned, city tax payed and we were ready to hit the streets... Sort of.

First stop was the nearby supermarket where we picked up some smoothies for breakfast. They did however not stay in for long before I had to forcefully offload it at one of the public loos scattered around the streets of Paris. Feeling sick and decadent, we headed over to a nearby McDonald’s where indulged in some hamburgers, in hope for this hangover to cease. After a while we began feeling better, and I insisted in us making a final visit to the Eiffel tower before catching the RER to CDG.

At 5pm, we bid goodbye to Paris and the Eiffel tower and headed to the nearby train station to catch our RER to CDG. After a smooth ride, we arrived at CDG around 5.45pm with some 2h 30m to spare before our 8.15pm departure. Since we had already selected automatic check in by the time we booked our ticket, all we had to do was to collect our boarding passes from one of the self-service machines. Our assigned seats for this flight were 10A&B, but I decided to move us to row 11 as it was an exit row.

After having printed out our supermarket-style-paperstock boarding passes, we didn’t feel much like spending 2hrs+ in the boredom of T2F’s overpriced cafés and duty free shops. So instead we did like any statusless low-booking class Y pax should do, i.e head for the perfect lounge substitute = Starbucks! For us it was only a 5 minute walk over to Terminal 2D.

After some ”lounging” and spotting it was finally time for us to head back to T2F at 7.15pm, 30 minutes prior to boarding. But on our way Terminal 2F disaster strikes! A ”security threat” forces the heavily armed gendarmes to close off the area around the TGV station, making it impossible to get to our terminal. The place was chaos, within a matter of minutes the entire hallway was crowded with people not knowing that the h*ll just happened. No information was given for how long the area would be closed off, so naturally we began worrying about missing our flight. I could really see why a certain venezuelan a.netter hates this airport so much...

Soon the blockade was released, so Farid and I began running towards 2F and the security control. Luckily the security wasn’t crowded at all and we were able to pass within less than two minutes. At 7.35pm we were airside.

After a quick look on the screens, we found out that our flight wasn’t du to board until another fifteen minutes, so this gave us some extra time to look around in the shops. We ended up flicking through magazines at one of the WHSmith’s or whatever they’re called in CDG, before heading over to our gate F28.

As we arrived, boarding had already been called. What surprised me was the lack of passengers flocking the boarding gate, which I would soon find out to be caused by the low load factor. Passengers were allowed to board at their own leisure, so Farid and I decided to board right away.

When my BP was scanned through the machine a red light illuminated, the gate agent then informed me that I was seated by an exit row and offered to move me to another row.
I jokefully told him that the only way I would move was if it meant an upgrade. This was obviously not the case as I was traveling on a dirt-low booking class on a half empty plane, so I thanked him and caught up with Farid who was already on the plane.

At the door, I was greeted by a friendly female flight attendant who this time did bother to greet me. The crew for today consisted of one senior male and four younger female flight attendants, most of them quite friendly. This A320 turned out to be the same aircraft that operated my outbound flight, a bummer for most people on this forum! The cabin was fitted with the same old 90’s style seats.

As we settled into our seats, the boarding had been completed. Load on this flight was estimated to be 40% in Economy and a healthy 80% in Business. Legroom at the exit row must’ve been at least 36 inches, more then enough for me. A moment later, the female F/A came over to our row and told me that she had seen me take pictures of the cabin. She strictly told me that I under no circumstances should upload that picture on Facebook. I found this quite strange, but I’m guessing she was afraid that any of the crew’s faces ended up on my pics.

Soon the aircraft pushed back, and the captain came over the PA welcoming everyone onboard. Flight time today would be 20 minutes shorter due to some favourable tailwinds. A bit of a bummer for me as it meant shorter time in the air, and longer time at ARN waiting for the bus home. During our taxi the crew made a manual safety demonstration. This was followed by a long taxi and a powerful takeoff from a runway which I don’t know the designation of, it was located near T1 though.

Au revoir Paris!

Following takeoff was the same slow climb as experienced on the outbound flight, during which the man occupying the aisle seat decided to move to one of the empty rows. This meant that Farid could move to the aisle seat, and the middle would remain free. Since the middle seat has a drinks table that folds out from the backrest, I decided to fold it out and move out the armrests giving us an additional 2 inches of seat width. In other words we were able to enjoy Business Class comfort when traveling in Y.

Sadly our luck was short lived as one of the passing by flight attendants noticed the middle seat table was down. She instantly stopped at our row telling us ”Non!!!” before slamming the table up agains the backrest. I know the airline industry is all about product differentiation but in this case it just goes to ridiculous extent. What’s the problem with letting the passenger do minor modifications to an existing product he’ve purchased. I know you’ll all say that ”If you want more space you’ve to pay for it”.

Then again that raises the question whether it should be okay to let people stretch out on 4-seater rows on empty long haul flights? If you want to sleep comfortably on a flight purchase a ticket in C class, no matter how empty the flight may be. So in that sentence I would advice Air France and all the other airlines in the industry to make all armrests immovable on long haul planes, and to hang padlocks on the middle-seat cocktail tables when the seats are used for Economy Class.

Anyways as I was getting upset about that, the crew had commenced the meal service. My expectations were kept low this time as the word ”meal” stated on the e-ticket must most likely be an euphemism for biscuit. To add some ”premium” touch to this all, the crew were conducting a trolley-less service this time, thanks to the light load.

Even though the days of three course cold meals in Economy Class, with salmon paté, tiger prawns and Sacher chocolate cake are over I was pretty satisfied with what was on offer for this flight. First of all quality and quantity wise this meal is still of higher standard in terms of quality and quantity then what’s being served in those paper boxes for SAS Economy Extra. And bare with me, I didn’t pay €600 for the flight...

Everything tasted absolutely great, especially the créme brulée. I must admit that Air France are still on the forefront when it comes to airline desserts.

I was feeling rather stuffed after the meal, but I was still in the mood for some coffee so I hit the call button and a cup of Nescafé was promptly delivered to my seat. The remainder of the flight was spent chatting, and reading the Air France Magazine. I also took my usual walk down the cabin for a small inspection of the lavatory.

The lav was not much to say about other than the blue colour on the toilet seats gave impressions of the aircraft might have had KLM as its previous owner.

As I returned to my seat, we had already began our descent to ARN which turned out to be very steep. In fact it was even steeper than the one we had on the outbound flight. This rapid descent caused the windows to fog making it impossible to get any views of the landing. Landing was smooth at runway 08/26, followed by a hard break and a quick taxi to our gate at Terminal 5.

Farid and I decided to leave the plane right away, so we quickly disembarked and were out in the arrivals hall within 10 minutes. We spent some time at McDonald’s in SkyCity before catching the 11.30pm bus to Västerås.

Conclusions

This was my first AF flight in three years, and I must say that despite all the cut downs they have still managed to keep the service levels at a high level, i.e more superior then most other EU majors including Lufthansa (of course it also depends on the duration of the flights). I would however have preferred AF to serve something more substantial on the morning flights. The crews were nice and friendly as always, with some slight exceptions.
All in all I’m still satisfied with the company, and I wouldn’t mind flying them again.

the AF service looks really good. What is the mininum flying time to get this service?

Last time that I travelled within Europe AF eco MUC-CDG the service was only a drink.

UK train tickets (except the advance purchase ones) are the same - if the conductor does not stamp them with the date, they remain valid - provided you don't use them to pass through a ticket barrier, as exists at some main stations.

= Jaja  . This made me smile. I could write a book on why I hate CDG. It would be a best seller for sure - sort of like RUINAIR! I am not surprised by the lack of announcements - it is VERY CDG.

BTW, I have developed a new "strategy" to enjoy my trips to France ... by pass Air France and Paris altogether and just go to the South. People are nicer and happier  .

Anyways, thanks for the report on AF. Besides the inconsistent crew, it seems to be a pretty above average experience. As I have always maintained, AF European crews are significantly better than the old-timers on the long haul flights!

Yeah, the land travel options from CDG aren't very nice. The RER is okay, but the cars are dirty and old and the trains stop at some really dodgy suburbs. Plus it is a complete rip off - try pricing a ticket to the next stop before the airport (at the Expo park) and it costs only half of the journey to CDG - that's an "airport surcharge" for you.

I give you a free hint since you obviously prefer spending time over money: There are some hotels around Expo, I think some of them offer a free shuttle to CDG so you could just use that one as a freeloader and then take the train to/from Expo instead. Of course it is a major hassle, but hey, if it is all about being on a shoestring...!

Having said that I still prefer the RER as the legroom on the Les Cars Air France is quite horrible and the ride is very uncomfortable. Plus depending on when you are traveling the center of Paris can be quite a mess so you end up spending a lot of time in that cramped bus.

Yep, AF isn't that bad. The real problem is CDG - flying AF usually means going through there, and that is far more stressful and annoying than it should be, so quite a major put off thing for me. Plus of course having to fly AY as the codeshare feeder flights to/from CDG.

Whilst it's true you were indulging in a Biz only perk, she could have been a bit nicer about it. Having said that, i don't see how you having the table down made any difference to ANYONE else (including AF's bottom line). If you had managed to use it though, you may have thought about using AF again, which would have benefitted AF. It's not much difference from using the middle seats' normal table - airlines don't have a problem with that! I tried to get the middle table down on my recent LH Italia flight, but it seemed to have been locked in position.

Stupid attitude of the FA. Its not like you went to the front and stole an upgraded meal, or tried to barge into the business lounge. A little extra room doesn't hurt and with an empty cabin what difference does it make to the FA whether you have a table between you or not?

Sounds like AF are heading downhill fast. I flew them a few years ago BHX-CDG-BES-CDG-BHX and was very pleased by the crew on all sectors. Albeit there was only one sector on mainline, but still they were good then.

This looks very nice, I must say that the catering on AF looks quite nice in comparison with LH and KL (not to mention SK Y). But then again I usually travel short haul from got which I think has a different set of meals than ARN as the distances are shorter.

The south does indeed seem nicer. I'd love to visit Nice and Monaco some day, sadly atm they're a bit over my budget.

I took the Air France cars during my last visit, and I must say they were pretty comfortable. Ride was very quick as well, and the bus was not too crowded.

Most probably reasons are; derated thrust (fuel saving and engine life saving), following the standard instrument departure accoriding the charts, including (lower) speed regulations for possible noise abatement procedures. It was 7am so that would be a wise decision.

Well, I was in C class on KLM lately, as well in Premium on KF. Passengers from Y go to the forward lavatory all the time and block the usage for me. On KF I had to use the toilet during approach and seatbelt sign on, because it was't available to me before. On KLM it's clearly stated that the forward lavatory is for business class passengers only, but people from economy class just don't follow up. And crew just can't be around all the time to send them back to the rear. Maybe the C-class passenger was frustrated about a similar happening?

You paid for Y-class, and for 1 seat. Not for the comfort of a middle seat or traytable in the middle. Maybe other passengers will follow your behavior etc. Plus, I'm not sure if this is allowed at the exit-row.
The traytable is part of the 'luxury' in C-class (for your comfort), and doesn't fit in the Y-class cabin product.
I understand the FA's wise decision to bring it back in position, maybe in a more 'friendly' way or with some explanation about it.

Hej Martin. Yes CDG T2F is really the nicest terminal, although 2E doesn't look that bad either. I'm glad the ARN flights don't leave from 2D anymore as they used to back in the days  .

I wouldn't say that. In my opinion the crew should either greet all passengers or not greet them at all. A polarized service treatment is something that shouldn't be accepted anywhere. Of course with the exception of higher class pax, elites, etc. Also the man looked away on purpose so I'm pretty sure that classifies as what's stated above.

Hey Marc. Yes the seating might not be up to date on this particular aircraft, however AF seem to have 4 different kinds of seats on their short haul aircraft. Would be better if they did like LH i.e introduce a single product fleetwide.

Hey Eric, thanks for your reply! Yes at that time I wasn't aware of the massive distances in Paris so I just kept walking thinking I'd be there soon. I should've taken the metro though...

I didn't even touch the perfumes. The woman in the shop just wanted me out the minute she saw me.

Yes, Västerås isn't the best location for going to ARN. 90 minutes away is quite the distance, but luckily there are busses going every hour until midnight.

Farid brought his trolley bag which was enough to cater his needs for 4 days. I crammed quite a lot of clothes in the upper compartment of my Fastpack, so for me it was fine as well.  .

No, but I would've expected the similar tray as offered on the return, i.e it consisting of cold cuts, youghurt, jam, bread & croissant. That would've been more appropriate for the duration of this flight.

For me I don't really care if the airline loose revenue on this ticket, then why did they offer it to me in the first place. Besides by purchasing the cheap-o tickets I help increasing the demand for this flights, i.e the people who actually need to travel at this given time are forced to pay higher fares = the airline makes better revenue. This system is of course many times more profitable then offering a flat fare for all pax no matter what time of booking, that's when we see them loose revenue.

Only time I've used the front lavatory was on my OK flight three years ago. C class was completely empty with only the crew having their lunch there, but even so I ended up having the F/A banging on the door urging me to get out.

That's not quite right, here's a fare breakdown on an SK one way itinerary ARN-CDG with a direct flight:

STO SK PAR 95.28TSEOWM NUC 95.28 END ROE 6.19217 XT 24.80YA 21.50YQ

The currency is USD, thus there's only the Swedish Passenger Charge (YA) levied on this itinerary, should be similar on AF as well.

The $21.50 (YQ) is the SK fuel surcharge.

So yes, AF did make a tiny bit of revenue from this fare. Profit? Hell no!

Whenever there is a possibility I always do it - I fold down the middle seat table and reposition the armrests to get the business class comfort for the price of economy. It never bothered a single FA. I guess you were just out of luck - the lady was in bad mood

Isn't it amazing that many of these old style seats are more comfortable than the newly designed ones?

The breakfast was by no means what you’d call substantial, in fact it was barely even a breakfast at all. The croissant and chocolate muffin were pretty small and dry, but with the Nescafé provided it was possible to wash them down. The blueberry yoghurt tasted pretty fine though, with some nice pieces of blueberry it became the ”main event” of this meal. Jus d’orange was nothing special either, although the taste was pretty mild and not sour which I like, especially in the mornings.

I don't know what LH serves on similar flights in these days, but the breakfast looks quite decent. Times have changed, AF has been under pressure by FR, U2 and others as much as other legacy carriers. What I really find ridiculous is what BA serves on flights between Germany and the UK.

That's totally unreasonable! I suggest you great everyone getting on your local bus the next time and make sure you don't miss anyone. Keep in the F/A has other duties as well to take care off during the boarding process.

In over 800 flights, I can recall being greated on less than half.
