Four small engines to Lviv/Ukraine

Zdrastujte, dear readers,

originally booked for the weekend are daytrips to Austria and France.
Some two weeks ahead, Mr. S. from the scheduling department approached me somewhat excited.
He saw a very good offer by Miles and More to the Ukraine, 10000 miles and some taxes only.
I´ve never been to the Ukraine before.
More interesting is the fact that Lviv airport is in major renovation works and therefore only small planes are permitted to operate. That is usually the basic scenery for high fares, what is the actual standard there.
Well, S. consulted C. from the controlling department and soon thereafter we receive three greens, as long as we cash back the taxes.
Hotels are also not that expensive for the night from Saturday to Sunday, so the whole thing is quickly booked.

This is the map with the actual departure airports

and the latest route map

Returned late last night from the UK

The Amsterdam Jet 2 Amsterdam, Seriously! (by FLIEGER67 Sep 2 2011 in Trip Reports)

and now I should set the heading to go the eastern way.

Lviv International Airport

.

Service Lufthansa LH 2550 operated by Lufthansa CityLine
Scheduled: 09.25 // 12.15

5000 miles and 55.00 Euro´s taxes per leg, this is acceptable so far to fly out from Munich today.
Some two hours to go by car usually, but you never know, so the cell phone alarm is set for 03.00 am, after a short night.
On the road at 04.00 am.
Traffic is ok and finally at the designated low cost parking deck P81 at 06.30 am. The fare is 25.00 Euro´s, ok so far.
Only deck 6 and 7 are open for the public, all the other
decks are reserved.
A couple of covered meters now to walk till the suburban train station, where the ride to the terminal is included in the parking fee.
The next train approached soon. I´am impressed how many of LH employees used also this way to store the car´s and reach the terminal. The train station is in Terminal 1, more meters to go for the Lufthansa Terminal 2.
It´s the weekend now, but S. from the scheduling department decides to follow my adventure anyway.
Comfy armchair, specially imported Ukrainian Medowucha, Vodka with honey, produced by Majska, on the table. Aside Wareniki, local filled pastry, so everything is set for an enjoyable weekend.
OLCI, whenever possible, seat 18A for me, the last row window, it´s one of the few rows with two seats only.
A view from above to the biz counters, not that much action this Saturday morning, or maybe the action is located at the eco counters
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101001.jpg
Now that´s a stylish bavarian restaurant
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101002.jpg
Three friendly female agents and me at the Senator Star Alliance Gold desks to send my bag for the airport tunnels, see you soon!.
There is a special entrance to the security checks directly from the Senator desks, well done here Lufthansa.
No one in front and through in seconds.
Time enough to go for the Senator lounge now, just around the corner from the entrance
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101010.jpg
The bar, everything what you want is served by nice staff
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101003.jpg
Self service buffet
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101004.jpg
My second breakfast
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101005.jpg
Only a couple of customers around, it seems I´am pretty well ahead to the first departure wave
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101006.jpg
Comfy seaters
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101007.jpg
Relax chairs
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101008.jpg
That´s the way to spend the time, surfing A.net reports
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101009.jpg
So, here we go from gate H24
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101011.jpg
I am really impressed to see that huge number of passengers around here, it seems LH doing well at MUC.
Ready ontime for boarding at the gate.
A bus is waiting downstairs, so it seems we´re doing the apron tour.
That´s the way, but not to the usual regional parking spots, just around the terminal to the other side.
Ah, this is the scheduled Avro RJ 85, D-AVRN, in service with Lufthansa Cityline since 12.09.1996.
14 examples are in the active fleet.
Leg no. 7 on type, it´s a new entry to my log and I´am in a good mood with this type today while the last flight is close to 300 legs ago
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101012.jpg
It seems the first day with rain around my latest travels, joke!.
Therefore no apron pics, only some shorty´s from the bus like this nose detail
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101013.jpg
Cockpit crew is from Germany, the captain with a short welcome during boarding.
09.35 am, ten minutes late, is the time to leave the European Union, 15 degrees, 1 hour 30 minutes for the Ukraine.
26L or 4000 meters beton, that´s fairly enough to go from MUC now.
The magic moment when you leave the clouds, how I love it
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101014.jpg
Contrails, some other planes around
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101015.jpg
Cabin view, that feels somewhat oldfashioned here.
The load is 100%, good biz for LH today
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101016.jpg
Bright grey leather seaters, well used.
Legroom is ok in the second to last row, the aisle is also taken
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101017.jpg
Cabin crew is two female FA´s, one middle aged, biz friendly to say the least, one young and nice.
The safety card
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101018.jpg
My personal IFE and the LH cake served with free drinks
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101019.jpg
Weather looks like better eastern side
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101020.jpg
Hazy on approach. The captain is short again on the mike, but less detailed. No route or flightlevel information
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101021.jpg
Some thunderstorms along the route.
Not that long to go for Lviv, the approach is once again from the shaky party, heavy to say the least
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101022.jpg
A very hard touchdown with superheavy braking action at the shortened, 1630 meters concrete runway 13, it´s 12.10 local, short prior to schedule, 11.10 am in Germany. Warm with 26 degrees and partly cloudy.
Renovation works, it seems that´s really needed here with these runway
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101023.jpg
A thousand of planes at the apron
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101024.jpg
Modern style bus transfer
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101025.jpg
The young captain is at the planes door during disembarking, he´s a cool looking guy with his pilot sunglasses.
Bye now, D-AVRN
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101026.jpg
Wait, there are some more passengers
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101027.jpg
Well, that building in the back looks interesting
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101028.jpg
Believe it or not, this is the terminal
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101030.jpg
Thanx god, it´s nice weather while queueing outside the small door, no more pictures with police protecting us or maybe the apron, who knows.
I´am at the end of the line, as usual and now that´s a really nice welcome to this country.
A young woman travelling with her mother in front and soon we´ve done a nice chat.
She is born in Lviv, but is now based in Munich for work.
We talked about life in Ukraine and what to do here in Lviv till we reached some small cabins with the officers.
He only want to see my hotel reservation and soon I was stamped, or better my passport receives another stamp and I´am allowed to enter the country.
There is no baggage belt, so you pick you´re suitcase up, walk along a grumpy old man, it seems the customs officer and reach the public area of the so called terminal.
Now, S. sitting relaxed in his comfy armchair, slurping from his icecold vodka and want to see a couple of location pictures. But first, where I want to stay this night and
how to reach the hotel from the airport?.
Well, I dont want to loose that much time and it´s Saturday early afternoon by now.
Sure, there is a public bus service but you need to change busses till the old town.
I´ve send a mail to the hotel about the best way and they offered me a personal ride with the hotels own car. The fare is less than 10.00 Euro´s, well gladly accepted.
The driver is waiting for me and soon thereafter I´am on the way. Catching some first impressions about the extremely secured driving style and the really well maintained roads here, irony out!.

.
Lviv International Airport

.

.
Service Lufthansa LH 2551 operated by Lufthansa Cityline
Scheduled: 12.55 // 13.50

I´am on the way for the included hotel breakfast early Sunday morning. Original intention was, to take a couple more pictures, but the weather changed and it´s raining steadily.
S., from the scheduling department is also again in his comfy chair, well, Vodka that Sunday morning, not my taste, to follow me on the way back to MUC.
The fare is again 5000 miles and 55.00 Euro´s taxes.
Well, anyway time to go to the airport.
The hotel arranged my taxi transfer, a pretty oldfashioned Skoda, but it works.
This should be the airport, surrounded by houses and industrial estates
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101070.jpg
Like a train station, isn´t it?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101071.jpg
The main entrance
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101073.jpg
And a view the other way around
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101072.jpg
Check-In for LH is in a small building beside the main terminal. It´s not a real counter there, more like a kind of scale, where you place you´re bag.
Seat selection is done online from my mobile the night before. The last row is taken, therefore 16A, the second to last row, but it´s also a two seater.
My question for the secured seat is ok, boarding pass printed and with nothing else to do on the way through the single security station.
Now that´s airside where you find nothing else than a couple of different style seats, second hand lookalike. A small but anyway closed shop and a couple of pax waiting for the same flight like me, so it seems.
That looks like BT on the apron and what´s that on approach from the left hand side?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101074.jpg
This is the door to the apron from the extended, joke, waiting building, no seats, concrete floor, no lounge here.
Gate 4, sorry where are the other 3?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101075.jpg
BT and LH closeby on the apron
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101076.jpg
Boarding now, again by bus
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101077.jpg
That looks also nice
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101079.jpg
So, that´s what an airport in the former soviet union
with the historic fuel truck looked like 40 years ago
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101081.jpg
Boarding now

Engine close up
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101083.jpg
No problems as long as you go the secret way.
D-AVRA, another Avro RJ 85 should bring me to MUC. Leg no. 8 on type, one more new registration for the log.
In service with LH Cityline since 18.11.1994.
1 pm, close to ontime, 16 degrees, wet after rain here, 1 hour 35 minutes for MUC.
UTAir inbound from Russia
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101084.jpg
And BT is leased by Ukraine International to operate during the runway works
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101085.jpg
Cockpit crew is from Germany, the captain with a short welcome during boarding.
Departure from runway 31, LCY style, engines spooled up. The plane rattling and shaking around and soon we´re in the clouds again.
Cabin crew is one young nice male and one middle aged female, less interested to say the least.
She´s also serving my row and that´s one of the very few examples when LH served something with meat, there is nothing else for me on offer without it.
Clouds ahead in direction west, nothing else expected
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101086.jpg
The FO is on the mike with detailed informations. Cruise level is 32000 feet above Krakow and south of Prague.
The actual LH magazine

And another safety card
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101088.jpg
Legroom is ok here. The same bright grey leather seats.
The load is again 100%
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101089.jpg
The well used cabin again with an oldfashioned feeling for me
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101090.jpg
Coming in to MUC on the 4000 meters 26R, 1.45 pm, close to ontime, pretty nice weather, joke, 12 degrees, cloudy and rain.
Now that´s summer in Germany.
Parked on the usual regional apron at MUC
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101091.jpg
Bye D-AVRA
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/UA1101/UA1101092.jpg
By bus to the terminal. My bag is quickly on the belt, priority helps and the same way back to my car.
Two more hours on the motorway and finally back home for a couple of days on the biz road.
S. send me some compliments immediatelly!.

This trip to the Ukraine was a real pleasant surprise, a nice city, mostly nice people, beside that alcohol addicts, but these guy´s are not only around in the Ukraine. Two flights on not that well covered material in my log.

And further on?.
S. booked a couple of flights, five to substantiate it. The mission is to catch a new departure airport in Norway.
Some lounging, an upgrade and an A.netter joint flight on the last leg, coming up soon, you know.

Buwajte,
comments are really welcomed, I´am glad to stay in contact with all you readers out there, so let me know
if there are any questions.

FLIEGER67 or Markus Klaus Felger, that´s also the way Facebook know´s me!.

Hi Markus!

Another great tripreport, I like the pics of Lviv.

I was lucky enough to fly the Avro 85 on a flight with Malmö Aviation, I was expecting an Avro 100 since they have 10 of those, but only 2 85's. Cabin was worn on that example too, like the two LH birds featured in your report.

Yeah, it sure isn't looking like an Airport.

Hi Markus,

good to see your Ukraine report, that country doesn't show up here frequently. I also considered going to Ukraine for a weekend in August, but I didn't find interesting flight options, so I booked the trip to Egypt.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Traffic is ok and finally at the designated low cost parking deck P81 at 06.30 am. The fare is 25.00 Euro´s, ok so far.
Only deck 6 and 7 are open for the public, all the other
decks are reserved.

That's where I always leave my car, it's a great facility. And btw, nothing will happen if you park on the other decks.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The train station is in Terminal 1, more meters to go for the Lufthansa Terminal 2.

Actually you arrive in the Zentalbereich right in the middle between the terminals. Due to the different layout of the terminals you reach the T2 check-in area faster than most T1 check-in areas from the S-Bahn. It's just too bad that there is no tunnel connection to T2.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The load is 100%, good biz for LH today

Well, the question is how many people have used 10,000 miles for the flight.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
My personal IFE and the LH cake served with free drinks

That was all?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
She´s also serving my row and that´s one of the very few examples when LH served something with meat, there is nothing else for me on offer without it.

Did they hand out sandwiches or trays with meals?

Quoting deltamartin (Reply 2):
Looks really nice

A real nice surprise.

Quoting deltamartin (Reply 2):
eah, it sure isn't looking like an Airport.

Exactly my opinion.

@PH:

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 3):
good to see your Ukraine report, that country doesn't show up here frequently. I also considered going to Ukraine for a weekend in August, but I didn't find interesting flight options, so I booked the trip to Egypt.

Thank you and Egypt, you know, also interesting.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 3):
That's where I always leave my car, it's a great facility. And btw, nothing will happen if you park on the other decks.

Good to know.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 3):
Actually you arrive in the Zentalbereich right in the middle between the terminals. Due to the different layout of the terminals you reach the T2 check-in area faster than most T1 check-in areas from the S-Bahn. It's just too bad that there is no tunnel connection to T2.

I remember a good walk lately, arrival on AB departure on KF.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 3):

Well, the question is how many people have used 10,000 miles for the flight.

Good point.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 3):

That was all?

Free drinks, the usual style, but nothing else to eat.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 3):

Did they hand out sandwiches or trays with meals?

Sandwiches only, I remember the small ones.

Hi Markus,

What a pleasant surprise to see your weekend trip to Lviv popping up. Judging on your excellent pictures, Lviv is immersed in somewhat mysterious atmosphere. Something like the attraction of the undiscovered. Great job of S. to get you there!

Hello Markus,

Verey surprised to see a report from you featuring only 2 flights   But it's ann interesting read on this small and rather unknown destination. Is LH the only WE carrier who flies here I wonder? Apparently the do well on this route (at least in the weekends) with these 2 full loads.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
I´am impressed how many of LH employees used also this way to store the car´s and reach the terminal.

Maybe they are obliged to do this?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
it seems that´s really needed here with these runway

Indeed, looks more like the runway at FIH, for example.

Lviv seems to be a great choice for a short weekend trip. I would love to go there one day. I hope that the fares become more acceptable once runway renovation is finished.

The city has a very interesting history. Chronologically, Lviv was a part of the Kievan Rus, then it became part of Poland in 14th century. Hallo Markus,

Nice to see another one of your reports online.

This interesting one reminds me a lot of my visit to Ukraine (and Moldova) two years ago. Spent a night in L'viv/L'vov and I can only agree, it is such a nice city with very interesting history and culture. I wrote my second TR on that trip, actually.

Nice bargain with the LH award ticket, where were you originally scheduled to go during that weekend?

Comfy armchair, specially imported Ukrainian Medowucha, Vodka with honey, produced by Majska, on the table.

Time enough to go for the Senator lounge now, just around the corner from the entrance

Hey, that looks like a familiar place! Oh and I completely agree with the above - it is peculiarly empty!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Leg no. 7 on type, it´s a new entry to my log and I´am in a good mood with this type today while the last flight is close to 300 legs ago

Well, as a regular KF flyer I have logged 56 flights with the -85, over 30 with -100...

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
A thousand of planes at the apron

When I was there there was a huge boneyard of more or less broken and abandoned old Soviet planes there. Did you see it or was it gone?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Modern style bus transfer

That looks just like the buses in MUC sans the info display.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Believe it or not, this is the terminal

Yes, I know the feeling. But it is very cute actually.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
He only want to see my hotel reservation and soon I was stamped, or better my passport receives another stamp and I´am allowed to enter the country.

No immigration card any more? The one I had was quite funny, worst English I've seen for quite some time. There was a special immigration officer lady who helped me to go through it and made sure it was properly filled, I think I had to write down my hotel's name and address four or five times on the same sheet... so pointless.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
I´ve send a mail to the hotel about the best way and they offered me a personal ride with the hotels own car. The fare is less than 10.00 Euro´s, well gladly accepted.

Heh. I took a taxi, we agreed on 40 or 50 Hrivna. When we got to my hotel I only had notes of 100 and he didn't have any change, so I ended up paying him the full 100 - which is around 10 EUR. He was very happy, shook my hand etc.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Historic houses, goodlooking churches and also well, people!.

Well, you know Ukrainian brides is big business around there. You should go to Odessa one day. The adverts for the marriage brokers etc. are amazing.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
This should be the airport, surrounded by houses and industrial estates

Such a nice airport. These old Soviet airports are so grand. Totally insufficient for modern day's requirements, but very beautiful and nice. I like how they have incorporated the old facade into the new airport at VNO.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
And BT is leased by Ukraine International to operate during the runway works

I was wondering what it was doing there, thanks for the explanation.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 17):

Yes, I know the feeling. But it is very cute actually.

That´s exactly my impression.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 20):
No immigration card any more? The one I had was quite funny, worst English I've seen for quite some time. There was a special immigration officer lady who helped me to go through it and made sure it was properly filled, I think I had to write down my hotel's name and address four or five times on the same sheet... so pointless.

Not at all, the hotel reservation copy only and I was stamped.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 20):
Heh. I took a taxi, we agreed on 40 or 50 Hrivna. When we got to my hotel I only had notes of 100 and he didn't have any change, so I ended up paying him the full 100 - which is around 10 EUR. He was very happy, shook my hand etc.

Hah, good story, also the ride from the hotel to the airport was around 5.00 Euros only.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 20):
ell, you know Ukrainian brides is big business around there. You should go to Odessa one day. The adverts for the marriage brokers etc. are amazing.

Will do so!.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 20):
Such a nice airport. These old Soviet airports are so grand. Totally insufficient for modern day's requirements, but very beautiful and nice. I like how they have incorporated the old facade into the new airport at VNO.

Good point with VNO. We will see what´s going on at Lviv.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 20):

I was wondering what it was doing there, thanks for the explanation.

This bird was also a surprise for me, you know.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 20):

Cards in taxis in Ukraine? Dream on, maybe in twenty years!

Or maybe a couple more!.

WOW Markus thats a fab report. Lovely city and hotel looks really nice. That Airport is unique I hope they never change it. Such history.

The Armenian Churches have a unique design reminds me of the one in Beirut.

Did you hole punch your Gold card? Just I see you don't use the Red leather tag which it goes inside.

Thanks for the lovely read.

Hi Markus,
Nice to follow your travels with yet another great trip report. Ukraine is still undiscovered for me so most interesting to see some photos from there.
Also nice to see D-AVRN again, it's a familiar one for me, flew FRA-FLR on it last year.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
S. from the scheduling department decides to follow my adventure anyway.
Comfy armchair, specially imported Ukrainian Medowucha, Vodka with honey, produced by Majska, on the table. Aside Wareniki, local filled pastry, so everything is set for an enjoyable weekend.

These gentlemen keep to amaze me - I'm running on a "one-man-operation" instead, but well...
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Well, S. consulted C. from the controlling department and soon thereafter we receive three greens, as long as we cash back the taxes.

Why did you change your original travel plan?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
My personal IFE and the LH cake served with free drinks

I think that is an improvement from my LH Cityline flight roughly a year ago - back then a completely disgusting vacuum-packed was served. Lufthansa seems to offer a very solid product otherwise also - on time, reliable, you know.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
Like a train station, isn´t it?

Yes, I can definitely see some similarities.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
And BT is leased by Ukraine International to operate during the runway works

Weird to see BT operating FOR someone as you've seen most interesting airlines operating for BT lately.
