Did the following trip a few months ago for the sole purpose of flying on LY and RG 777s. 20 Jan02, LAX-EWR, UA 80, N588UA, Dep Time: 7:47, Flight Time: 4:36h, Seat:16F, Movie: Hardball. Departure from LAX was actually a few mminutes early (sched at 7:50). Nothing particular with this flight, good breakfeast and channel 9 was on so I was happy. Arriving at EWR was okay and a quick taxi to the gate. Then headed to LY to ckin for their flight to TLV. There was already a long line with people being asked questions for security reasons. I didn't have a good reason to go there I guess so they took me to a room for questioning. After about an hour, they told me the flight was full so I wouldn't be able to get on the flight anyway. I then went spotting and noticed that other people I had seen in line with LY, now were in line with CO so it seemed to be true that the flight was full. So to the backup plan. 20 Jan02, EWR-LHR, UA 906, N766UA, Dep Time: 19:57, Flight Time: 6:10h, Seat: 1E, Movie: The Others. Got First Suite which was great, meant that I would be able to get some sleep. Push back a few minutes early again and almost now wait for take off at the runway. Quick climb and after 30 min or so, then drinks followed by dinner. I had a very nice Filet Mignon with some very nice red wine. We had to circle at LHR for about 30 mins before we could land due to congestion. Went to the observation deck and was there for a few hours and saw LY 777 arrive right after RG 777 PP-VRA. Very nice!! 21 Jan02, LHR-TLV, LY 316, 4X-ECB, Dep Time: 14:43, Flight Time: 4:10h, Seat: 33B, Movie: Serendipity. Security in LHR with LY was a breeze compared to EWR. All luggage was xrayed but otherwise not a problem. They even took my luggage to the gate so I could walk around with just my backpack. Simplified things for them. Boarding took a while and we left 13 mins late but the plane had also arrived late. Not too happy being in a middle seat and the flight was full but happy to fly on another 777. Seat pitch probably wasn't that great, felt cramped. Flight attendents were very young and friendly. Service was okay. PTVs but Airshow didn't work or was disconncted. Not to good choices in inflight entertainement but the movie I chose was pretty good. Only one other choice of movie. Meal was okay. Flight was pretty quick and the unusual thing was really bad turbulence about two mins before landing. Never experienced that before, but there was bad weather in the area that night. Parked next to CO 777 and also noticed AC 763. No problem entering Israel even when I told them I was leaving early next morning. 22 Jan02, TLV-LHR, LY 315, 4X-ECB, Dep Time: 9:12, Flight Time: 5:11h, Seat: 25A, Movies: Captain Corelli's Mandolin; Traffic. Had six hours of sleep in a hotel near the airport which was great because this was going to be a long day. Got to the airport early to make sure I would have enough time to go thru security and possible questioning. I was again chosen for interview in a seperate room but was now awhere of the routine. They do try to trick you a lot so you have to be sure of what you are saying. This took about 1h 30mins and I then had to wait to see if I would get on the flight. I evnetually was called and got my boarding pass. Happy to get a boarding pass and a window seat!! Too bad I flew on the same plane again, had hoped to go on ECA or ECC. Oh, well. I had two people next to me but the window seat didn't feel cramped like the middle seat before. A flight attendent came by to talk to me and offered to tour the airplane when we were in flight. He was a friend to 4X-ELD, a member of this forum who had heard about me being on this flight. Had a nice breakfeast and then the tour of the plane. Did see the opening for the overhead crewrest but was not shown the cockpit. Also saw First and Business Class. Nice but it's clear that LY is catering mostly to Economy class passengers. No airshow again either  Sad Had to circle of LHR again which was okay since I then could continue watching Traffic. After we landed, I had to the observation deck again for a few hours. 22 Jan02, LHR-GRU, RG8753, PP-VRB, Dep Time: 21:56, FLight Time: 12:02h, Seat: 37A, Movies: Bridget Jones's Diary and The Score. Checkin was done by SK which was a surprise to me. After an excellent dinner at Chez Gerard in T3, went to the gate and got switched to a row with a window seat and two empty seat next to me. Great! Push back a few min early and then taxi for takeoff with almost no wait at the runway before take off. A quick climb followed and Airshow was on! The flight attendents were somewhat old but very attnentive. Had an excellent dinner and watched movies after that. Really makes a big difference if a flight is full or half empty. Varig also has video on demand even in Economy class. This means you can start and stop the movie at your conveneince which is great. I think SQ may have this also. Had a few hours of sleep and the flight passed quickly. Turning over Sao Paulo and then landing at GRU. Spent the day taking pics and spotting but the pics didn't come out probably due to excessive xray by LY. My flight on Varig 777 is one of the best I've had in economy class. Really nice! 23 Jan02, GRU-MIA, UA 872, N769UA, Dep Time: 23:25, Flight Time: 7:25h, Seat: 3 F. Movie: The Princess Diaries. Really glad to fly in F again as I was prtty tired by now. Had a great dinner and a great male flight attendent who was very attentive. Got a few hours of sleep after the movie. Nice again with Airshow and Channel 9 which is the best flying experince when they are both on. Had to wait in MIA for a few hours but it was dark so didn't see too much. 24 Jan02, MIA-LAX, UA 830, N779UA, Dep Time: 7:25, Flight Time: 4:55h, Seat: 14B, Movie: Summer Catch. Flew Business Class for the first time in a few years. Have either been in F or Y recently. Was pleasantly surprised at the amount of legroom. Seat pitch in C now is similiar th what it used to be in the old F seats. The seat also reclined a lot which was great. Had an okay breakfeast and then watched the movie and slep a for an hour or two. Then it was great to come home and get some sleep in a real bed!! Plan to fly AirEurope 777 later this year and perhaps a rtw on 777s next year. Not as good on trip reports as Lufthansa747 but hope you enjoyed this. The777Man

Great report, The777man!  Big thumbs up

I find it very interesting to read about your different 777 experiences. Varig 777 sounds very good - I'll have to try them on at least on LHR-CPH now that it has switched from the M11 to 772. Found their legroom very good in Y on the MD11 and service was pretty good too.

I'm doing the Star alliance birthday promo (55555 bonus miles), will be on United B767-300s MUC-IAD-MUC. Got seats 28C and 26E right now but I'll try to get Y+ windows for sure...

Best Regards,

P.S. Thanks a lot for your compliments!!!

Nice report, The777Man.

All of your flights except your first were on 777's which seems to be a 757. Right?
Well, El Al surely knows everything about security. I guess they know your dog's name after 1h 30 minutes of interviewing.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

How I wished I could be like you... maybe trying all the B747s in the world!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Take Care,

Great trip report!

Even though I think I would be totally exhausted after such a trip I really envy you. I hope I will be able to do something similar some day...

Many thanks for the nice comments! Yes, I was pretty tired the last two flights back to LAX from GRU. Yes, only AirEurope 777 remaining and that will require another long trip with no hotel. Sill working on that since they don't have schedule beyond May. SAS_A330-300: yes, all flights on 777s except first one. Hope to fly your namesake from IAD to CPH and ARN next year. Going to ARN in Mid-May by the way. Sorry for that the text in the post is without spaces and is very condensed. It has to do with WebTV uses so there's nothing I can do about it. I will try to put pics in next report to break it up a little. Lufthansa747, When are you coming to IAD? I would like to meet up with and perhaps talk about aviation and go spotting. Email me if you are interested. The777Man

Hey The777Man,
I was waiting for this report  Smile
You will be happy to know that the air show and the video system on ECB is now fully working (they did a software update that week and now there are 10 video channels to choose from)
Anyway, if any of the forum members are planning a trip with ELAL let me know  Smile

Awesome trip report!

But man, how do you afford to go all over the world in 4 days just for the hell of it?? Are you non-rev? What airline then?

Hi ! Sorry for no paragraphs but has to do with being on Webtv and then on Airliners.net. Nothing I can do about it, but next trip report will be broken up by pics so it will be easier to read. Yes, I'm a non-rev, work for United Airlines. Cost about 400 USD including hotel in TLV. Hope to fly AirEurope soon. Probably fly MXP-CMB or if I can get on a charter flight TLV-MXP, have friend looking into the latter. AirEurope would be a revenue ticket and runs a little less than USD 700 MXP-CMB/-MLE-MXP. If I do fly MXP-CMB, I will probably continue around the world via BKK and NRT to IAD. Will for sure post a trip report after I fly AirEurope 777. The777Man
