London – San Diego via CDG/LHR. U2 and BA Y+

Hi!

Welcome to the first in a series of reports covering my September travels to France, the USA and Mexico. As most of my other trips, this journey started with an email special offer. BA were offering half price redemptions for economy and economy plus (World Traveller and World Traveller Plus (WTP) booked within a 10 day period. Hmmm. I had a lot of miles in my account, and free time – where should I go. I started off booking a flight to Hong Kong for next Easter. Still more miles left……I had enough for a premium economy return to North America. After evaluating where had redemption seats to places I wanted to go, I was torn between Bermuda and San Diego/Mexico City. What with the high costs of hotels etc in Bermuda, and a much shorter flight (costing the same number of miles), I decided to go with the San Diego/Mexico City option. As I was in WTP, I was subject to much higher ex-UK departure tax. I circumnavigated this by starting my travels in Paris. It was cheaper to buy an easyJet flight to Paris from London, then fly back via LHR with BA, than get a direct LHR-SAN flight. I had friends and an uncle in Paris too, so it was a fortuitous course of events. If the British Government try to sell the higher departure tax as a ‘Green Tax’, then I’d be happy to show them how it ‘forced’ me to take two extra flights!

I investigated taking the Eurostar to Paris, but the one way fare were really not economical, so I used my Nectar card points (which I’d been saving for no particular reason), and spent them on an easyJet flight out of LTN instead. Whilst the Eurostar is more expensive, if travelling city to city, it DEFINITELY trumps the plane.

To briefly outline the other flights on the itinerary, from SAN I’d get some AA flights routing SAN-LAX-DFW-SJD (San Jose del Cabo), and then a further Aereo Calafia Cessna Caravan flight LAP-MZT, before finally flying back from MEX-LHR on a B744.

It was a little strange starting out on a 3 week long international trip by flying out of LTN, but there has to be a first for everything! I got a taxi to LTN, and managed to time my arrival with an enormous downpour. Soaked, I made it to the terminal, where I was checked in in no time, and upstairs to security.

The queues were short, and despite the rude staff, I was in the departure lounge around 15 minutes after getting out of the taxi.

I had heard about these holograms before – ‘she’ was telling everyone about what to do concerning getting reading for security. People seemed far more interested in looking at the hologram than what she was saying.


Departures this afternoon. The Wizzair flight for Dubrovnik and Burgas seemed to have a nice long delay.

Once the gate was announced, there was a long walk down some uninteresting tunnels to the gate. People seemed to think that the plane would leave without them, and there was plenty of pushing in the queues.

The pushing continued (worse than any other ‘no-frills’ experience I’ve ever had) enroute to the plane. Despite it looking like it was mid-winter, it was early September! Nice summer we’ve had!

Drinks prices were better than FR, but still more than I was willing to pay for a G&T. Interesting that along with other well regarded brands, they use Skyy Vodka.

I noticed a BA B737 sitting on a remote ramp looking like it was receiving some mechanical attention – diverted from somewhere no doubt. I was quite surprised that U2 had proper airbridges here in CDG. The walk from the plane to the curb was very short, although I must say, WTF were they thinking when they built this terminal? (in fact all CDG terminals). I’d only flown through T1 before, which was just bizarre. Terminal 2B – mess! So unnecessarily cluttered and confusing. And very harsh and grey and concretey. Not very aesthetically pleasing!

I then took a long walk though innumerable passageways before ending up at the massive railway station, where there was a long wait to buy a ticket.

I finally got a train, which got stuck in a tunnel somewhere, and ended up taking over an hour to get to Luxembourg RER station. Just adding the flight time, and train time in Paris, and you’ve got the same amount of time that Eurostar takes – don’t fly to Paris from London!

During my time in Paris, I visited the Père-Lachaise cemetery, which was pretty interesting.

Before long it was time to head on to San Diego, by way of London. This would be only my second time transiting through LHR (despite it being my ‘preferred’ home airport and having flown from it well over a hundred times), and the previous time I was on a purely domestic itinerary (MAN-LHR-EDI-INV). I was interested to see what the LHR transit experience was like!

I caught the RER back to CDG, which luckily was much emptier and quicker than the way out.

When I finally found the BA check in area, I went to the ticket desk to see about upgrading to Club World. The lady at the desk said that it was impossible on my ticket, so I just went to drop my bags off instead.

There was very little queue for immigration and security, and before long I was in the very long and narrow departures area.

BA’s preferred premium lounge is the AA Admirals Club. However, this is a) located in a different pier, and b) not very nice. There is also a CX lounge, which is much more centrally located, and with far better F&B, but is also much smaller. However, it is only open to coincide with the CX departures, so only around 10 times a week, for 3 hours a time – not suitable as a default lounge for BA’s numerous daily departures. Interestingly, when I mentioned that I was going to go to the CX lounge to the BA check in lady, she had no knowledge of the lounge. I did, however, go along to the AA lounge first, mainly as I had some ticketing questions I needed to ask ahead of my SAN-LAX-DFW-SJD flights.

I was bored of the AA lounge pretty quickly, especially as there was no proper food to speak of. I packed up my things, and walked back to the main terminal to find the CX lounge. I was lucky enough to happen to be departing at the same time as one of the few lunchtime CDG-AMS-HKG flights.

The F&B options were FAR better here. As I arrived, they were switching from breakfast to lunch, so I had a few pain au chocolats, before they brought out teriyaki chicken and rice, salmon sandwich, fruit, OJ and champagne. Yum! Interestingly, CX don’t offer champagne on the business lounge in LHR (only in the F section) – being in France has some benefits!

I headed down to the gate area around 30 minutes before departures. Very strangely, CDG was designed so that some gates, including ours, can only be accessed via 2 flights of stairs (no escalator/lift), and via a food court. And there was far too little room for a full B767. when I booked the flight, I hadn’t realised that BA had re-introduced the B767 on the CDG route, so I was glad that it happened to fit into my schedule.

The plane filled up pretty well, although as I was sitting in the small forward cabin, I couldn’t tell you the rough LF. Most seats from what I could see were taken. There were quite a few big French tour groups. There was mumbled apology about the delay, before the safety demo was done on the small, and very fuzzy screens. The BA shorthaul B767s are known for being in an awful state of repair. They look very 80s., and not in a good way.

Before long, the cabin crew set about serving everyone a drink. Once again, there was no choice of snacks, just whatever the cabin crew had to hand. I asked for ‘a couple’ but was only given one – fair enough, it’s a short flight!

It was a very short walk to the transit area. There was a fast track lane for checking boarding passes, which was good, until a BAA agent decided that the queues would all go faster if she put non fast track people into the fast track lane. Unfortunately, this is standard behaviour at LHR. Anyway, I got from my CDG flight to the lounge in just over 10 minutes, so that’s not bad at all.

Hello Horse!


The South Galleries lounge wasn’t too busy. When entering, I asked about paying for an upgrade. I was told that the ticket was upgradeable (the CDG lady was wrong) – GBP 179 for Y to Y+, and GBP 399 for Y+ to C. Bit too expensive for me today – on a night flight, it’d be better value. Still, I’d rather spend 400 quid on something else. I was quite happy to see that they’d introduced some cold noodles into the lounge offerings. Perfect with a Grey Goose and tonic!

I kept watching the screens like a hawk, hoping to see my flight depart from T5B. The B terminal has a lounge that I’d never been too, and really wanted a look at.

Sorry, this photo is a bit fuzzy. I was interested to see that on the same departure screen, there was FIVE different ways for BA to put up destinations:

Paris – CDG
Paris ORLY
Milan MLP
Rome FCO
SAN DIEGO

Some with hypens, some with full airport names, some made up, and some in CAPS.

Anyway, once I saw tat my flight was leaving from T5B, I made my way down to the transit, then back up to the departures level in B.

G-YMMT would be taking me across the Atlantic today. One of the AVOD enabled B777s. All B767 and B744 have AVOD, but only some B777.

I thought the B lounge was far better than either of the two over in terminal A. As flight from B are only announced 60 mins before the flight, foot fall in the lounge is far lower here. And the layout just made the whole place seem brighter.

This cabin divider caused a lot of heartache for the guy that had put his stuff in there. Still, he didn’t move his stuff after his first struggle trying to get into it, and had to call staff FOUR times during the flight to get it open!

About 25 minutes into the flight, the crew came though with drinks. This was my first flight with the new ‘Mixed Fleet’ cabin crew. After all the uproar with crew striking, BA have introduced a new group of cabin crew, with revised T&C that operated both short and longhual (rather than either/or). There were quite a few comments about them in various forums, but the overriding feeling was that they were much happier and friendly, but not nearly as polished. I think, in the main, this is fairly true. The staff were all very young, with the exception of a few managerial level staff, brought over from the old fleets. When in terminals, you can identity the Mixed fleet staff as the ladies wear hats.

Anyway, back to the drinks. I’d heard that BA offer sparking wine in economy longhual. It’s not champagne, but I thought I’d try it anyway.

Interestingly, water was served in (2!) plastic cups. At the beginning, alcohol was served in glass, but it seemed that the glasses ran out further into the flight. It was a nice first drink though – could also have been in Club!

The AVOD selection wasn’t amazing, but it was better than my recent flights on LH. I set the aisle seat o the moving map, while my screen tuned into the film selection. First up was Midnight in Paris.

I was quite glad to be handed a survey form by the crew. By this stage in the flight, I’d been trying to order some more drinks, and despite resetting my call button every few minutes (so it would resound in the galley), it took a good +15 mins to get seen too. Not impressed. The survey gave me a chance to vent!

When we finally stopped, the captain came on the PA asking everyone to remain seated. He then explained that San Diego was experiencing a county wide blackout, and that the terminal had no power. There were no outbound flights, as the TSA couldn’t screen anyone. We, as far as I could see, were the only inbound aircraft. I’m still surprised that we weren’t sent to LAX instead. Still, I’m glad we weren’t!

As there was no aircon inside, and the immigration computers were down, we were told we’d be disembarking in small groups from door 1R. How exciting, my first time using an R door! Steps were wheeled up – they turned out to be too low, so new ones were needed.

Most of the Club passengers moved towards the front door, so I took the opportunity to try out the Club World seat – very comfy!

When the first set of passengers were allowed off, I tagged onto the end, actually disembarking before half of Club. Oh well! It was such a shame that I couldn’t get a photo of our magnificent B777 in the sun. There were SO MANY police around, and with the 911 10th year anniversary coming up, I didn’t want to get too much attention!

Immigration was actually fairly quick. All the officers were on their mobiles, reading out our passport info to some office somewhere. There were a few brief questions (but of course, no fingerprints), before I was stamped into the US.

The bags were all being brought slowly into the baggage hall (no carousels were working). From disembarking to arrivals hall only took 20 minutes. I imagine if you’d been sat at the back, it would have taken considerably longer though.

I made my way outside to try and get a shuttle to my friend’s house in North Park. It took a while, but around an hour after touchdown, I was on my way. As there was no power, there were no traffic lights, and traffic was VERY slow.

BA were pretty good overall. The comfort afforded by the WTP cabin over standard Y was great, although depending on the flight, GP179 might be a bit too expensive for most. Of course, if you re looking for tier points, it’s a decent deal. The Mixed Fleet staff were all friendly, but definitely not as refined as their old fleet counterparts.

My next report will cover my AA flights from San Diego to San Jose Cabo via LA and Dallas, which should be up soonish (I hope!).

BA WTP doesn't look to bad, in march I flew CPH-ARN-CPH in their Y+ class called Economy Extra, and I found it a nice product, a middle-thing between Y and C.

Be glad you were on the inbound. The return flight did not go that day.

Looks like you had a good journey. Im looking frwd to trying out Mixed fleet on a long Haul flight. I have tried them on the domestic flight to Manchester a few times and they are looking very smart and all the flights have been very professional (But you cant go to wrong most of the time on the short flight)

Well, presentation wasn't their forte (but trumps US airline food), but tasted good. It's nice that BA have gone with the larger uncluttered trays. I thought it might just have been in WTP, but it looked like Y had the same trays.

BA looks like they provided you with a nice service in Y+. We just got back from flying Scandinavian, and their Economy Extra looked similar to your experience. Nice to have the curtain separation; makes you feel like you're in your own private cabin!

Thanks for posting your BA WTP experience. A bit of a strange routing you chose via CDG, but explainable from an a.nutter's point of view   Although I believe transiting in CDG isn't exactly a 'gift from the God's'. It's more a concrete hellhole than a decent airport (just my opinion ). Glad to see BA managed to do a decent job and good to see they reintroduced the 767 on their CDG flight.
And did you get any reaction on the survey form?

Yeah, we got a muffin! Strange that you didn't get a snack with the drinks - although LHR-JFK is much shorter than LHR-SAN. That packet of snacks is meant to last you the extra 4 hours!

Well, I wasn't directly transiting - had 2 days there, but yes, CDG is horrible. Make LHR (even the old T2) look nice!

Well, that's CDG for you. It's just a horrible airport, no matter which terminal you look at. T2E and F are the only relatively nice parts of it, the rest of T2 is just a dump. I never understood why they didn't finish these bare concrete hallways, but maybe they ran out of money.

BTW the A-C terminals of DFW have the same concept as T2A-D - make it possible to drive very close to your departure gate. A nice idea - in the days before endless security lines!

BA service standards state nuts/savoury with a cold drink & cookie with tea/coffee...of course if you prefer the other option then you need only ask.

The meals in WTP are exactly the same as WT, the benefit is that you will be served first & guaranteed your preffered meal.

The call bell not being answered is wholly unacceptable, I hope you put this in the feedback form. I do however personally prefer to exercise my legs a bit & visit the galley.

I've flown MF a few times and think they look smart & are very keen to impress, it is unfortunate that BA are not always consistent from LHR.

Glad you enjoyed your flight as a whole. What if any improvements could be made to WTP in your opinion?

Well, it depends on how you look at it. A long fully booked flight, having a bit of empty space is a god send. And if you collect tier point/miles, it's pretty good. If you want a J class experience, then no, it's not great.

There's something about going into the galley to ask for a drink that I just don't like. I feel like I'm entering the one area staff can hide and realx (albet, they should eb out serving me more G&Ts with a smile!)

I can quite believe you saved something flying that way. A friend recently booked MXP-ZRH-DXB and then bought a cheap ZRH-MXP-ZRH as it was still considerably cheaper. You're quite right, before a green tax is introduced then this practice has to stop!

Well, there was *some* power, just not much. No computers, x-rays, telephone, but taxi lights etc was ok. I imagine the tower had enough to get the plane safely down. Went on from around 3-11pm

Its ridiculous that that is the way it is. I remember a few years ago needing to get a one way flight SIN-PEK. It was cheaper to fly FIRST class with SQ SIN-KUL, then turn around and go KUL-SIN-PEK in Y, than a straight forward SIN-PEK in Y. But this was the first time that the only contributing factor was departure tax, and not air fare.

In the UK, I've only seen 150ml cans sold in big boxes, but it's really expensive (you can get 1.5L in Tesco for 16p!). In the Far East you see it quite a bit. I've also noticed that BA have stopped stocking mini-cans of water in their lounges and onboard - they only have big bottles now.
