SAN airport tour, and AA SAN-LAX-DFW-SJD

Hi, welcome back!

This is part two of four, covering my trip to Paris, the US and Mexico. Part 1 covers my easyJet flight from Luton to Paris, then my BA flights from Paris to San Diego via LHR in World Traveller Plus . This part will cover my tour of San Diego Airport, as well as my American Eagle/Airlines flight from San Diego, to LA, then on to Dallas, then finally down to San Jose Cabo/Cabo San Lucas. The next two reports will cover my Cessna flight from La Pax to Mazatlan, and the final report, my BA flight from Mexico City back to London.

When I was researching this trip, I spent quite a while looking at the best places to go, and the best flights to take. I had quite wanted to go up to San Francisco, but as this trip was mainly about Mexico, and given that I wanted to spend a decent amount of time in SF, I thought I’d leave it for another time. This meant I wanted a cheap one way flight from SAN to San Jose Cabo (SJD). There were direct flights from SAN to SJD, but where was the fun in that. For a few pounds more (around GBP100) I go get a flight via LAX. Ok, not bad. What else could I find? Well, for GBP121 (USD 190/EUR 140) I could route via DFW as well. And with the wonderful 24 hour rule, I could schedule a full day in both LA and Dallas. Excellent!

After the excitement of a citywide blackout on my arrival, it was a bit disappointing to have the lights come on around 11pm. It seemed like most of the city had got together with neighbours in an effort to drink the city dry. Once the lights came on, the magical camaraderie seemed to disparate.

The next morning, with my friend at work, I decided to walk down through Balboa Park – beautiful place!

When looking at the SAN website before flying out, I noticed that the airport offers a free Terminals to Tarmac Tour. These only run a few times a month, but I was lucky enough to happen to be in town on one of those days. The tour was quickly confirmed.

From the park, the airport was an easy walk. San Diego is one of those rare cities where walking to the airport is possible. You get some great views of arrivals too!

I was delighted to see that the BA B777 I’d arrived on the previous day was still there. Obviously, BA decided to cancel the flight that night. Strangely, however, it was rescheduled for 5pm (thus arriving into LHR around 10am) – how come they didn’t try and get the plane out ASAP? A 1pm flight would have arrived at 6am, great for onward connections, and no so long a delay.

The tour started at the Commuter terminal, where everyone (a group of aspiring pilots, an employee who’d been advised to take the tour to get to know the airport, and another employee with her son (all the schools had been closed due to the blackout, even though there was electricity today)) was given some info about the tour/airport, and some headphones. We had a private bus, and the tour was lead by the Head of SAN Planning.


We drove over to Terminal 1, where after a quick briefing in the bus, we donned our headsets, and took a walk of the terminal.

After seeing the terminals (alas, only landside), and hearing about the various challenges of dealing with airline customer needs, we were back on the bus, and driven airside. (sorry, a lot of photos were taken through tinted glass).

My lovely BA 777! It had been parked on a remote stand all day, but *just8 as we were approaching it, it was towed to the terminal. Such bad timing, especially as we ended up being able to get out on the same stand area for a few minutes – everyone was quite disappointed! The Head of Planning was saying that it was the first time he’d actually seen the BA plane in the flesh, as it normally arrived and left outside office hours.

We were then driven over to the cargo area. The guide really didn’t have much of an idea about plane identification (which surprised me, especially as he’s got his license – sorry, I shouldn’t be mean – he was trying!). At first he mistook this for a B767:

The tour was really good, especially for free. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone passing through SAN – it’s a shame the dates are so limited though. From SAN I caught the airport bus to downtown.

From there I started a long walk around the edges of Balboa Park back to my friends house. It was a long walk, so I stopped in a nice park and did a bit of underside plane spotting. Sorry, my timing was pretty lousy, so I missed a lot of good pics! It was interesting photographing and tying to identify from underneath.

It was soon time for my first domestic US flight, happening to coincide with the September 11th attacks. As you might imagine, I was rather wary to taking any obvious photos, so most below were sneaked, hence the very bad composition.

I took the bus from town - cheaper than a shuttle.


There was only one person ahead of my in the check in queue. My bag was about 2kg over the limit, so I was asked to take some stuff out, and put it in my carryon (not sure how this would reduce the amount of weight on the plane though….). I moved 2 paperback, and the woman said that that would be ok….I hate pointless exercises. Incidentally, the lady at check in was wearing a football jersey – ever heard of a uniform?

There was no one in the queue for security, so it was actually very quick and pleasant. No SSSS, despite being a foreigner on a one way ticket. I wasn’t waiting in the small departures area for long. Being BA Silver, I had Priority AAcess, so was the second onto the plane.

Upon boarding, I made my way down to my seat. The sole male cabin crew was busying himself in the galley on his phone. He didn’t look up or acknowledge a SINGLE passenger. Clearly, it wasn’t part of his job description. Once everyone was sat down though, he did make a very perfunctory ‘welcome’ message. Flight time was announced from the flight deck as a very exact 23 minutes.

As I’d learnt the previous day, 95%+ departures are not over the city, so there weren’t many good views. I’d gone for an A seat on the left, which meant I had very few views of the coast, and missed the Hollywood sign.

The FA stood nonchalantly in the galley on his phone for most of the short flight. I noticed that the trolleys were all full of cans – there was (just) enough time for him to have done through the cabin and throw a can at everyone, but he didn’t. Before arrival, he did, however, read out a list of connecting flights. There was quite a range, including Shanghai, Dubai and London, as well as plenty of domestics.

We touched down over 20 minutes early – a usual occurrence on the route I believe. The taxi to the American Eagle terminal was a short one.

Once the tarmac bags had been loaded onto a trailer, the cabin door was opened, and everyone filed out into the shed, sorry, I mean American Eagle terminal.

The Eagle terminal is way out in the middle of nowhere, and you had to get a shuttle to the main AA terminal. No doubt due to the distance from the Eagle to main terminal, my bag took nearly half an hour to get to the luggage belt.

I was picked up by my hotel shuttle, and before long I was at the rather dowdy, but cheap and cheerful LA All Suites Adventure Hotel.

As I had just one afternoon in LA, I thought I’d do the most important thing first … In-n-out Burger! I had a fairly elaborate itinerary laid out, but relying on buses in LA on a Sunday afternoon is just a daft idea. No joking, I should have hired a car. Most non-Americans I imagine would balk at the idea of hiring a car for an afternoon to get around a major city, but honestly, it’s the easiest thing to do. LA is made for driving. Anyway, after a wait for a bus, then a walk, I approached the airport.

When I got back, I watch the news – lots of stuff about 911, including reports that LAX would have massively heightened security the next day.

The next morning, I got the shuttle back to the airport. There was a police cordon, but we weren’t stopped.

I went up to the First Class check in counter, where I was told my flight had been cancelled, and that I’d been rebooked on a flight via Denver. Hmmmm. Not impressed, especially given that there are umpteen flights a day between LA and Dallas. My single aim of the day was to visit the JFK museum in Dallas before it shut at 6pm. My flight was originally scheduled to arrive at around 2pm, so plenty of time to get there. My new Denver flight wouldn’t arrive until after four, meaning I’d miss the museum. I explained all this to the agent, who then set out doing everything she should to help. She said there was an earlier flight, but I was too late for that. She did, however, manage to get a seat on the one after, arriving into Dallas at 1520 – bit of a close call, but I thought I’d go for it. I asked, rather lamely, if I could get a window. She said “honey, I barely got you on the flight”. A bit of furious typing later, and she crooned “I got it!”, and she high-fived me! Been a while since anyone has done that to me! But great result! Next task, my bags. I was about 3kg over this time, but I’d come prepared, and moved a load of stuff into my second checked bag, which worked fine for her. Again, I don’t see the point. If anything, it’s more money (for the tag), more time and effort of the loaders, and more liability should it go missing, than if I just had a slightly overweight bag (only around 25kg in total, so well before the 32kg max). Still, that’s how AA rolls.

There was a special security channel for Priory AAcess pax, which only took around 10 minutes. I made my way over to the Admirals Club lounge. The friendly lady on the door gave me a couple of drinks coupons, and welcomed me in. This was my first time in a USA lounge, and I was quite shocked at how little was on offer. There were some muffins, a coffee machine, and some fruit. That was it! Everything was behind the bar. Quite a few drinks were free (although you had to either know, or ask which was which). There were menus around with food and cocktails on, which confused me. I thought lounges were places where you could just eat and drink to your hearts content! Not here! I handed in my drinks chits, and got a bottle of water (a premium drink here!) and a mocca, then went to find a seat. The other issue with having a bartender is the obligation to tip…

It seemed that not greeting passengers is actually SOP for AA. There was an FA in the front galley who ignored me, so I just followed the aisle down to my seat – given the complete lack of seats, I got an excellent seat near the front – incidentally, it was the same seat as I’d already chosen for my flight from DFW to Cabo. It was nice being on a MD80, although I’d rather have had the B757 originally scheduled.

The flight filled up to the last seat. I got an Aussie seat mate, fresh of the SYD flight. When he asked how long the flights was, he wasn’t happy with my “about three hours” response. I wonder why he didn’t get the direct flight?

My bags. It was only after I took this photo that I realised that the carabineer that had been around the handles of my bag had been removed. It lasted travelling through Austria (where I got it), England, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, Qatar, Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Jordan, Spain, Germany, Sweden and Denmark before finally being stolen in the States. I’m going to miss it! Such a handy travel tool.

Check in was almost deserted, and I was seen very quickly. This time, my bag weight didn’t have an issue, and it was tagged, and sent on its way. Interestingly, boarding passes (for all the flights) seemed to be on old ticket stock. Haven’t seen paper tickets like that in years. Is AA just trying to get rod of them?

I headed to the lounge, where I was greeted by an Japanese agent. She only gave me one drinks coupon, but gave me a wifi card as well. Seems to be a bit of variation in protocol. I asked for a second coupon, but was told that LAX did it wrong, and I was only allowed one. I used my coupon on a Grey Goose with orange. Very tasty! Free food in DFW was biscuits (cookies) rather than muffins.

I was one of the first onboard, and settled down into the same seat as the one I had had the previous day. Luckily, this flight was a lot less busy, and I had a pair of seats to myself. I guess the LF in Y was around 50%. Bizarrely, when I boarded this time, I was looked at in the eye by a FA, BUT she was crouching in the coat cupboard in front of row 1.

I was stamped quickly into Mexico (yay!), but then had my bags searched at customs. The lady there refused to speak and English (I’d be surprised if she couldn’t, given that 100% of international flights are full of either Americans or Canadians). I was told to push a button – a red light showed, indicating a random search was needed. I suppose its more random than officers just choosing someone. With my bags zipped up again, I ran through the gauntlet of people in the arrivals hall, and managed to get a seat on a ‘collectivo’ for Cabo San Lucas.

Conclusion

I was fairly impressed with AA. The flights were great value considering the distances involved (2368 miles for GBP 120) – and rereouting SAN-LAX-SJD to SAN-LAX-DFW-SJD only added GBP20!. Service on board was generally good (except for the sulky man on SAN-LAX). Some free snacks would be nice though – I don’t know how US airlines get away with not serving meals on flights up to 8 hours, just because they’re domestic. At least you get full sized can of drink for free. The cancellation in LAX was a shame, and trying to rebook me on an indirect flight was quite rude. I suppose as an O-D passenger, without any same day connections, my flights were less important that others’.

Addendum!

Since I wrote this report (and just before posting) I booked an extra flight, Oaxaca to Mexico City. I had originally planned to taking the bus back (nearly 8 hours), but the bus ride down to Mazatlan to Oaxaca via Mexico City (24 hours) was so traumatising that the first thing I did when I arrive in Oaxaca was to book a plane ticket with Viva Aerobus! So my new full map looks like this:

FIDS – I’m not sure if I prefer alphabetical or chronological ordering. I think with chronological it’s easier to see if your flight is boarding/closing at a glance. With alphabetical, it’s easier to see if you could get on an earlier flight.

Another good report, gabrielchew!

Looks like you had some decent flights with AA. When I flew through DFW back in July on my way from MSP to RDU, it was equally boiling hot! There was a lot more haze though; the arrival in was no where as clear as on your day of flying. The D terminal also looks to be a lot nicer than Terminal C. What a difference!

Aren't you an a.netter? I thought that this would be a good oppourtunity to a) visit in-n-out burger without actually have to spend too long in LA (not somewhere I'm terribly draen to) b) visit Dallas - can't imagine I'll ever be going there specifically as a tourist, c) to get some more airmiles/tier points with BA. I'm happy with the way the itinerary panned out. An afternoon in LA and Dallas was enough, and provided a nice interlude between San Diego and Cabo.

Bought it from Expedia. Ticket was the same price on AA.com. You seem scandalised by my routing! I did actually reprice it to see if I could also add ORD, but the price skyrocketed. And the ticket was SAN-SJD, so an ever shorted point to point distance.

Well, depending on what I'm doing, it's nice to get direct flights. As it was, I was in no rush, and was on holiday, and found this the perfect way to see a few new cities briefly that I otherwise probably wouldn't have done for little extra expenditure (although a much bigger carbon footprint, but I don't like to think about that too much!).

Excellent pictures in LAX and DFW. The Admiral's Club at LAX does give you a good view of the ramp. The 777 is AA 170 from Tokyo. At LAX the larger aircraft usually shut down their engines on the ramp and they are towed to the gate.

You were at Terminal D at LAX which is the International Terminal. It is the newest terminal there. Usually at DFW and other hot airports the passengers are asked to close the window shades before deplaning, just to keep the airplane coler

I'm from Dallas, and it is HOT in the summer.

Nice trip report. Not to lower your already low opinion of US domestic lounges but the coffee served in Admirals Clubs is not even real coffee. It's a type of coffee concentrate that gets mixed with hot water. Yuk! I try to avoid it when possible but sometimes it's the only option when I need a quick caffeine fix.

The "Stage 2" and "Stage 3" posted on the sign is referring to permitted noise levels. Stage 3 is more strict than Stage 2. Flying over populated areas, the curfew keeps local residents happy/less angry.

The IATA has a set amount of maximum permitted miles (MPM) between two points which is relevant for full fares. You may make unlimited stopovers bewteen the two points as long as you do not go over the maximum permitted mileage. You were not on a full fare so therefore not on a mileage based fare. Discounted fares are usually routing fares which means you have to follow a certain routing in order to qualify for the fare. Some routing fares will exceed MPM but it's to benefit the customer and airline. The routings of fares are published along with the fares in the airlines tariff. Your ticket probably conisted of SAN-DFW fare with a connection in LAX and a DFW-SJD fare. When you book it online you will probably only see the total fare and not the breakdown of it.

That's an short explanation of mileage fares and routing fares.

Not to lower your already low opinion of US domestic lounges but the coffee served in Admirals Clubs is not even real coffee. It's a type of coffee concentrate that gets mixed with hot water. Yuk! I try to avoid it when possible but sometimes it's the only option when I need a quick caffeine fix.

Oh dear, doesn't sound good. I rarely drink coffee - my mocca was the first in a while - tasted as bad as coffee always does to me!

Yeah, this is common on flights in warm locations. Helps to keep the plane cool during the layover.

But the crew had been there for a day already, and should have been ready to fly back as soon as my flight landed.

I believe gabrielchew's opinion is in response to posted notices outside the Admirals Club. There is usually a sign that states outside food is not permitted to enter the lounge. Anyone who does not visit a domestic Admirals Club often do not know this rule is largely ignored by the Lounge DrAAgons/AAngels. It seems even they know the high school cafeteria quality food there is pretty lousy. International Admirals Clubs, especially those shared with other oneworld partners usually offer decent food,
