UA First Class IAD-FRA B777 New Configuration

The trip:

I had to fly from IAD to Austria for business. I normally fly out of SFO, so it was kind of neat to fly out of IAD. I had been to the UA international first terminal at SFO, so I wanted to see the one at IAD.

The flight was on a B777 new configuration first. I have never flown on a new configuration first. I had been in business new configuration many times, and I really enjoy it. However, the new configuration first was new for me. I must say that the seat is much nicer than business. It's not just a business class seat without a seat mate. The seat is wider, plusher, and much more comfortable. The IFE is identical to the business class. There is also storage in first, unlike in business, which has zero storage (except on the window side of the B747 upper deck).

This is a 5:45pm flight, and we arrive at FRA around 7am, allowing us to connect easily. I had read on FT about the LH welcome lounge, so I want to check it out since I had a long layover. I also cover the LH welcome lounge in my TR.

I hope you enjoy it!

Great new video, sfflyer123!

Looks like you had a nice flight with United in F. Their food looks pretty good! I also love those roaring 777 engines .. So much power, its incredible to watch and feel it when you're on board.

Thanks,

Matthew

I think it's so funny that you're so complimentary of the United pilots for their smooth landings... I'll have you know I ARRIVED into Frankfurt last May on a UA 747-400, and to say we "touched" down is simply being polite!
But any landing you can walk away from, as they say....
The food looked good.
That welcome lounge did look nice- for whom is that spot open? Star Aliiance First passengers? Star golds?
Anyhow, I did enjoy your report.
But- BOOO for Dulles getting rid of the mobile lounges.... I was actually planning, just this week, to book an international connection through IAD, to ride the lounges one more time.... I didn't realize they were already gone.
Sad day- great memories of those things, miserable though they were.

Fabulous trip report, thought the popping champers cork was hilarious. Did it break any glass?

Thank you! I almost broke a champagne flute. The glass fell off the table, and thankfully fell right on my foot! It was hilarious. I am glad I caught it on film! Thanks for the comment.

It must be that I've been on more UA flights, but I flew LH first class (see my last trip report FRA-SFO in first class on Lufthansa), and the pilot slammed that plane on the ground. It was a crazy landing. I do think LH pilots are more rough than UA pilots, from my experience.

The welcome lounge is for LH HON and arriving passengers in F and C on LH, UA, and CO. Star gold will not get you in.

Yes, I was shocked to when they were gone! But, I must admit, these trams are much faster, cleaner and nicer. I remember getting off the plane and then getting on the moon buggy, standing crowded with all these people, holding onto the rails. That was quite painful. Thanks for the comment!

Since you mentioned it was a non ER 777, was it N773UA or N780UA ? I know the 777 pic you posted wasn't the one you were on.

That is a great question. I really don't know, to be honest. I am not so savy about these planes to know those code numbers. You're absolutely correct that the 777 pic was not the one that I was on; I was walking through the terminal and saw the 777, so I took the photo. How did you know that 777 was not the one I was on? You are very astute!

Hi sfflyer123,

I'm a big fan of your Trip Reports. I've commented in the past that I chose SWISS C class for a previous trip across the pond based on your trip report.

I was getting ready to post my first trip report for my UA SFO-FRA, F class experience this month and I saw your same post about UA F transatlantic. You just beat me to it   We even had the same menu.

A couple of comments:

UA F Lounge: I used the UA F lounge at SFO and like you I thought it looked exactly like the Red Carpet Club, which was a bit disappointing. They even used the same furniture. The differences from the RCC were the upgraded food options - hot soup, cold cuts, sushi (presumably for the Japan flights), little sandwiches and better cheeses. It also had a self service bar containing premium booze and an upgraded wine selection including champagne and saki. I found the UA F lounge to be more on par with the LH/LX Senator Lounge (except the Senator Lounge has better furniture  )

UA F Seat: I agree with you here. It was a very nice seat with lots of storage space. There were at least three cubbies for storage including the really deep one at your elbow. One weird observation that I made - whenever I would recline into the bed position and I would lay down, I noticed that I would get really hot and start sweating. I would then sit upright and it would be OK. It seemed like when you would lay down that the seat and the shell would somehow disrupt the airflow so that it would get hot while laying down, but as soon as you sat upright, you would be back within the airflow of the cabin. It sounds weird, but I noticed it the whole flight.

UA Menu: I agree the Ahi tuna appetizer was very good. I thought the salad was the best part of the meal. I chose the creamy dressing and my FA glopped it on like I like it. I thought the tomato basil soup was just OK - a bit too watery. I chose the Filet Minon for my main course and this was disappointing. Like your main course, the presentation was poor and pretty sloppy looking. The steak was also as tough as shoe leather. I made the joke that it was more like Horse Minon instead of Filet Minon. It reminded me of the Rodney Dangerfield line from Caddy Shack, "This steak still has marks from where the jockey was hitting it." My knife just wouldn't cut through it. I had to saw off sections or just use my knife to rip it apart. I'm quite aware that it is airline food, so I didn't expect a gourmet steak, but I have seen it done better. The steak in Swiss business was much more tender and flavorful. I got the cheese plate instead of a sundae, but I did watch the gentleman's eyes across the way light up like a pinball machine as the FA poured caramel sauce and sprayed whipped cream his sundae. It was funny to watch the anticipation on his eyes. It was like watching a small child's eyes light up seconds before you hand them a triple scoop ice cream cone or cotton candy the size of a basketball.

Welcome Lounge - I missed the welcome lounge as I had a tight connection to WAW.

Thanks again for your wonderful trip reports!

Excellent TR.

I 100% agree with you. UA pilot does the best soft landings, moreover on the Senior guys on the 744, they just know how to land! Flew over 80 times on UA744 not a single bad landing. No other airlines does it so consistently. I really enjoyed watching the landing in FRA scene on your video.

Sam

Thank you, Sam. Yes, I agree, they touch down those 744's amazingly well. If you look on my youtube homepage, there is a first class flight on LH FRA-SFO, and the LH pilot basically slammed that plane onto the ground. I've never been on such a rough landing on a 747. He basically didn't "flare" the plane at all; it just plopped down! This is one area where UA has an edge. I think the UA pilots pride themselves on soft landings.

You should still do it! I don't want to steal your thunder! I would be very interested in seeing your TR. There are always subtle differences with styles of reporting and experiences that it makes for very interesting reads. I once read a TR of a UA flight that I always take, and it was great to see it. Please post your TR if you'd like!

Thanks. That is very, very insightful. I was thinking of getting the filet, and now based upon your report, I am glad that I did not. I usually get the filet, but I was trying to be healthy, so I ordered the ravioli. Otherwise, I would have gotten the filet in a heartbeat. It's too bad that your filet was so tough, especially in first class. That is just a total disappointment, unfortunately. Thanks for your great comments, and I hope you do post your TR!
