Background:
New year 2011, quite a bit of spare time before my next school assignment, so an ideal time to do some flying. I had quite a few must-fly types that I wanted to see in my log. Where as the A310, B753 and MD11. I had flown the summer before on the KLM MD11 between Amsterdam and Montreal. So this would leave only 2 desired aircraft types. From my younger teenage years I always wished to fly the 310. As I was with skyteam the CSA 310 on the PRG-JFK route always looked attractive to me. But it was zeroed out when Delta took over the route with a 767… Another option was Air Transat who operated 310’s in to BRU from Montreal… Would be nice. In a mood of boredom back in 2010 I found some new codes of airlines and airports S4 and PDL operating flights from PDL to Lisbon on A310’s. This would be SATA Azores Internacional who operated frequently on flights between the Azores, Lisbon, Toronto and Boston. PDL Would stand for Ponta Delgada, The capital of the Azores Island group. Back fast forward to January 2011, Looking for a trip including A310. I had a safe option to a well known city, I could grab a seat on Air Transat’s Paris-Toronto service, or go of path with a similar priced deal on TAP/SATA’s Brussels-Lisbon-Ponta Delgada service. One way or the other?? Oh well, we have to be brave sometimes in our lives. So I chose for the latter option. When I booked online I could not enter my Continental OnePass number, after making a phone call to the TAP office my number was entered. When the booking was completed I checked some reviews and did not hear to much positive about TAP and SATA. Especially them not liking enthusiasts and Photographers… hmmm was it a good choice?? Let’s see..

Pre-departure:
In the following weeks I would quite a bit of conversations where like the following. “Where are you heading??” “Ponta Delgada??” “Ponta wadda???”…..Did not know what I would end up doing that weekend in Ponta Delgada, but with quite a few newbies in my log it was not bad trying it once…Quickly the weeks followed and before I really realised it, it was February 3, the day before my departure. After returning from Brussels to retrieve my new US passport (why I had to retrieve it, see my previous trip report series on my December USA trip), I checked in online, I was able to check in and print my boarding pass for the Brussels-Lisbon sector but not for the Lisbon-Ponta Delgada segment on SATA. I had 20F confirmed on the TP607. Soon it was time to sleep and arise the next day at 7.30, quite a civil hour If you’re used to flying to the US a lot. An hour later I was ready to leave, after a walk, a bus ride and another train ride to the Brussels Airport. I arrived there at 11.00, a large hour and a half before our departure time.

The first thing that I spotted was the arrivals board where I found out that my aircraft had just arrived as TP606 from Lisbon. So we would depart on time, next stop was to find the check-in desks. TAP was using row 6 this morning for their flights, there was no line and got checked in no time. I received my boarding passes for both legs, however the check in agent referred the SATA flight as S4 airlines. A few minutes later I was underway for the mini walk to the A-terminal (for the ones who are not familiar in BRU, the A-concourse would almost lay in the city-centre of Brussels). By 11.30 I was in the A-concourse, traffic was a bit on the calm side with the major bank of long haul flights already departed. Just a few Brussels Airlines A330’s and a United 777 (which would depart as UA951 to Washington-IAD later on) was parked at the B-concourse. In the A-concourse traffic was pretty calm as well: Brussels Airlines, Iberia, KLM Cittyhopper, Alitalia and Régional where present. Iberia 3203 to Madrid was operated by EC-LKH, an A320 in Oneworld livery. OO-SCC, a Brussels Airlines A319 in star alliance colors was also present. Shortly I approached gate A58 where I found my TAP A320. She was registered CS-TQD and named Eugenio de Adriande. Just when checking my boarding passes, I noticed my Continental Onepass number was not on both boarding passes. Soon I went over to the gate agent to get things sorted out, after some typing she assured me that my frequent flier number was entered. Soon 12.00 came by and the boarding started for:

Having my camera around my neck I did not know what to expect when I turned into the glass jetbridge. In the distant I could see 2 flight attendants, these two ladies had the most natural smile I have ever occurred in my life. After passing trough the Business class cabin, which basically was the same hardware as Economy, as with most European carriers. Approaching the Economy cabin I was greeted by another male flight attendant. Who immediately noticed my camera ‘haaa, you are going to take some pictures’ was his reply. After some talk about my trip I proceeded down to my row. The aisle and the middle seat remained unoccupied. My first impression was a very tight pitch with my knees literally squeezed in between the seats. Soon a man came who occupied seat 20D. He asked me if it was 20C, and I replied negative. And he re seated him in his correct seat, result I had a 3-seater for myself. Soon the door closed, Flight attendants took their position… and the safety video started to play. Taxing out I found something interesting in the T-concourse. A 767-300 from Air Italy group registered I-AIGJ, never seen this airline before. With ample taxi time we lifted in to the skies at 12.28

While we where climbing the inflight entertainment switched on. It’s a nice feature to have IFE during a short flight like this one, the only problem was that there was no way we could listen. No headphones and the worst of all, no way to plug them in.. This was a bit on the downside. When reaching our cruising altitude of 37 000 feet the flight attendants where in the aisle with the meal service. The meal on this flight consisted of a hot dog, while presentation was not superb. It was nice to get a hot meal and some free booze during a short 2,5 hour flight between Brussels and Lisbon, especially noting that the vast majority of my flying is on US domestic carriers. The taste was not bad at either, after clearing my meal it was time for the duty free sales where I bought some nice chocolates. At this time the tight seat pitch was really getting to be a factor. Thankfully, I could stretch my legs over the 3 seats. But if the flight was full, this would have been quite uncomfortable. By now we where already above northern Spain and went to stretch my legs. The remainder of the flight I would be talking with the flight attendants and taking some pictures. We talked about workload and pressure, the Azores, my usual US flying, TAP, SN, …. During my galley visit I offered the flight attendants some chocolates as well.

In the meanwhile it was approaching 14.20 in Brussels and about 13.20 in Lisbon and the engines where throttled down, when I returned to my seat we where already flying over mainland Portugal and the ground started coming slower my direction. The captain came on the public address system to tell us that the weather was sunny and 19 degrees celcius, that just sounded so nice in beginning February. Soon the flight attendants came passing by with their final checks and all seats when back to the upright and locked position giving me a half of an inch more legroom, which did not feel bad. Soon after that I started looking trough the window and noticed the city of Lisbon. Hmm, nice to get a free tour of LIS as well. At 13.53 We made a nice and smoothly touchdown on runway 3L. After passing some TAP aircraft and noumourus Hifly A310s. We passed CS-TGU a SATA A310 waiting on the tarmac.. Would she take me into Ponta Delgada in a few hours?? Hmmmm… I was quite amazed to see all those A310’s here in Lisbon knowing it is quite a rare type. A few minutes later we docked at our stand beside another A310. After saying goodbye to the crew I boarded the bus, which made another free tour of LIS and dropped us of at terminal 1. Here I could find all the inbounds who where parked on hardstands. Each flight was shown with it’s registration number as well. Spoken about a nice feature for the aviation enthiousast.

When I arrived in to the terminal I could only find the signs to the exit and all passengers going that direction. I soon found out that this was leading to the baggage claim, so not quite the right direction for me since I had another flight to Ponta Delgada later on some 5 hours later.I decided to asked some uniformed people which seemed to be flight attendants of SATA flight 130 from Terceira, I got a short answer that they did not know (and did not care). Soon I found some airline representative and told me I was going to leave from terminal 2. I passed trough custums and hopped on a bus to terminal 2. After searching and waiting a while I found the bus and proceeded to terminal 2. Terminal 2 is dedicated to easyjets, TAP’s and SATA’s domestic Portuguese flights. When asking at the SATA desk for the load I got informed that the flight was only booked with a 100 persons… Sounds nice. After exploring the pre-security area of terminal 2 I found out that there was nothing here besides chairs and a big hangar, soon I was back on the bus to terminal 1. It was now about 15.20, just 4 hours prior to my next flight. After walking a bit around I did not find anything exiting except some nice arts hall. I was looking into visiting the Lisbon city for the remainder of the time, but before that I found a nice little aviation store in the corner of terminal 1. I visited it and bought myself a US Airways/Piedmont A319 model, while starting a small conversation with the owner. Well, small… By the time I left the store it was 17.20.It’s a wonderful store with a fun owner, I suggest anyone with a long transfer in LIS should visit this store. I did learn a lot of new aviation related stuff as well as stuff about SATA, Sao Miguel, …. By now it was 17.30 and was quite hungry. Settled me in for some OJ and the special Portuguese cake desert. A real delicatesse…


17.50, a little less than an hour and a half before my connection I decided to make my way back to terminal 2. At this time the sun was setting so spotting would be impossible, by 18.00 I was in terminal 2 and made my way to a quite busy security counter, people from our flight and passengers to Madeira where sharing the line. The line took about 10 minutes, as mentioned earlier there was not that much to do in terminal 2. Just a large sitting area and some basic shops around, when I asked the gate agent if there where open 2-seaters available I was told that the earlier flight got cancelled and that the flight was fully booked. Soon 18.40 came, time to board.. But no announcement was to be made. It was quite a bit of waiting before our scheduled departure time of 19.10. The queue moved very slowly it took me about 15 minutes to reach the bus, which departed at 19.30. We got another tour of the LIS airport but could barely see anything, at 19.40 the bus stopped at CS-TKN. SATA’s only A310 in new colors and according to my friend in the aviation store TKN is special because it is the only SATA A310 with PW engines. Finally I could set step aboard the main goal of my trip.

I was glad to be boarding by airstairs on this ancient aircraft! When reaching the top I greeted the main flight attendant who just nodded back. This action would be repeated by several other flight attendants when making my way back. J-class looked pretty comfortable given the duration of out flight. Economy class had the old-school style seats who where to be found on several carriers like Air France, Sabena, Iberia, … in the mid 90’s. Soon after finding my seat my neighbours found their seat as well. The person in front of me dropped something and asked me if I would mind helping him to recover his object. Due to my lack of Portuguese my neighbours helped with the translation. Soon the captain came on explaining the delay that came due to a delay on the flight from Ponta Delgada to Lisbon. Soon we started our pushback and the safety video started to play. When taxing in the darkness I noticed a familiar friend sitting on her stand. CS-TQD, the aircraft that took me from Brussels to Lisbon was still resting on the stand where she arrived 6 hours ago. Seems like not a busy working day for her today. At 20.03 the engines spooled up, and away we are on runway 3. Heading over the city of Lisbon and back over the Atlantic towards new adventures.

Soon we reached in flight entertainment was switched on and similar to my TAP flight to Lisbon there was no way to listen to the IFE. No Personal TV’s, AVOD or anything… Of course I was not expecting (and for nostalgic reasons not wanting) any of this kind. The seating was quite a tight fit as well, good for 2 hours. But would be painful on 6 hour flight from Ponta Delgada to Boston or Toronto. Soon all the flight attendants would disappear in the SAGA business class. Where half of the flight attendants would start their service. In the meanwhile I made a quick stretch to lavatory and made some cabin pictures. Finally about 1hour after take off the service started in the Economy cabin. 21.10 in Lisbon, 20.10 in Ponta Delgada… I received my meal. A not so well presented sandwich (like the TAP hotdog and some vanilla cake. I did not understand the service schedule quit as it took more than an hour to serve an A310. Okay a short 2 hour flight from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada. Would raise some annoyance on sectors as Ponta Delgada to the US or Canada. Especially the eastbound red-eye services.

As time flew on the service was nearly completed and our decent in to the Azores had started Immediately a tense rush of finishing the service went trough the flight attendants, the downside was that our decent would be in the dark and there is not so many to say about it. Before realising it we where approaching the ground. After seeing some light we made some turns and before realising it we where on the ground in the Azores at 20.52, after a short taxi we arrived at our hardstand a few minutes later. We parked next to Macaronesia’s two brothers, CS-TKM and CS-TGV. Well well, glad to be able to spot the whole SATA A310 family in one day. When deboarding I was allowed to make a picture of the flight deck, after a walk down the stairs and some walking on the tarmac (just lovely! These old school airports)

Once in the airport it seemed like we where the only arrival. The previous arrival was 30 minutes earlier from mainland Oporto. It did took a good while before my bag arrived, but 30 minutes after landing it finally appeared on the belt. Once I entered the arrivals hall I was surprised how modern it was. No form of open transportation here… The only way to my hotel was a taxi which costed 9 euros for a 15 minute ride, quite a fair price. At 21.50: 15 hours after leaving my house, I arrived in the hotel Resicencial Citades. Basic but a decent product for an adventure weekend…

Overall verdict
First of all I would like to cover the TAP part of the trip. Given the mixed comments about TAP (especially by skytrax..) I was quite pleased about this portion of the trip. Flight was on time. We got a free hot sandwich (not quite presentable, but good), IFE (without headpones, not that I care on such a short flight) and friendly F/A’s. The only downside was the tight seat pitch on their A320’s. It was made up by the light load factor. However. If this flight would have been full, it would have been an issue. Lisbon’s airport is not easy to navigate in at all and if you need help, there is poor signage and you will have to look quite hard for somebody. On the thumbs up side. As an aviation enthiousast, one really needs to visit the aviation shop pre-security in Lisbon’s terminal 1. It is worth the visit and the chat .

As expected, the SATA flight had no AVOD, old-style cramped seating, …. But hey, I did not take this trip to get pampered by all the new innovations we have become used to when flying.. The main goal was catching an A310 and I succeeded in this. The only downside was the cool and distant attitude by the cabin crew and the awkward service schedule I had on this flight.

In the end I noticed my miles had not been accounted into my onepass account, unlike promised. Don’t know where the error had happened, was it the gate agent and the phone representative who failed to enter the number correct. Or was it a glitch in TAP’s system..

Remarks.

TAP Portugal Airlines 0607: (Total: 69%)

Departure: 70% (Brussels was calm as usual. However, the promise that my CO Onepass number was entered was not kept)
Aircraft cleanliness : 70% (New smell, tough a bit dirty and worn interior)
Seat Comfort: 70% (Leather seating is comfortable, tough the seat pitch was tight.. Higher rating due to low load factor..)
Crew: 80% (Friendly, professional)
IFE 70%: (good, but a plug in for headphones could have been usefull)
Catering: 70% (Decent, for a flight this length. Presentation was not so good but the taste was)
Arrival: 50% (Lisbon is a very unclear and hard-to-navigate Airport)

SATA Internacional 0129: (Total: 64%)

Departure: 60% (Delay, without any announcements that where made on the ground)
Aircraft cleanliness : 70% (Aircraft was clean en kept clean)
Seat Comfort: 60% (pretty cramped, would be uncomfortable on a longer flight)
Crew: 40% (Not impressed: very cool and disant. Did the job and nothing more.)
IFE : 60% (good, but a plug in for headphones could have been usefull)
Catering: 80% (Decent, food was a bit better than the TAP flight)
Arrival: 80% (Ok, fun to walk on the tarmac for once )

The cruise company used to fly almost exclusively charters on Aero Lloyd, but 2 weeks prior to our flight they went bankrupt. AIDA had to organize other flights and we ended in a all white A310 from Hapag Lloyd! What a nice suprise! By the way, there were interesting carriers that day in DBV. They even had to charter planes from Thomas Cook Belgium and Croatia Airlines and so on to get all the people to the ship...

Strange that you got Aviapartner boarding passes. I would have bet SN takes care of TP in BRU, but aparently not...

Good trip report . It seems both airlines offer basic services without too many frills. But for shortish flights that is all one needs.

Thanks for commenting, It was a real treat to get one of these. I can only reccomend to try to get one of these birds while they are still around!

I will surely visit that aviation shop if I ever get down to LIS!

Thanks for replying! TP has a limited but a decent service (the meal is free) in Y IMO (or at least better than it's US counterparts). Jup flying the A310 was a real treat, must agree!. Enjoy our hometown carrier in january!!

Hi Martin, thanks for commenting! I can only recommend you book an A300 or A310 flight before they are gone. My only complaint was indeed the legroom on TAP.

Thanks for replying! Must agree with your comment over the 310. The meal that I got on TAP shoud present a hot dog and a small cake! The meal was better than it's presentation!

ticket was op TAP and all flights have TAP numbers (TAP does qualify for Onepass)
