Introduction

Mistake fares - something which the airlines hate for obvious reasons, the consumers love for obvious reasons and various consumer rights protection agencies try very hard to make the airlines to honor for obvious reasons. Love ‘em or hate ‘em (I love) - they happen from time to time. So when Lufthansa posted their infamous one for travel between Scandinavia & Finland and Venezuela/Colombia I didn’t really think at all - just booked something cheap for a time period that I could probably use some vacation days for.

As mentioned the choice of destinations was basically Bogota in Colombia, Caracas in Venezuela or some of the lesser cities in these countries (for a bit more money). Now being on the right end of the political spectrum Venezuela and Mr. Chavez’s clown socialism didn’t really appeal to me (and besides they probably would’ve turned me right back at the border anyway) so it had to be Colombia instead!

With the mistake fare straightforward connections via FRA to BOG would’ve only been 250 EUR for a roundtrip, but since the fare rules allowed it, I added two additional stops (and flights of course as well) which brought the whole LH itinerary to HEL-ARN-FRA-BOG-FRA-MUC-HEL, with the HEL-ARN segment being of course operated by SK under a LH codeshare. This itinerary cost a hair under 300 EUR. A nice bonus was that the long haul segments would be operated with the A340-600, my first flights with the type!

Now one of the interesting things of traveling to a new country (and continent!) is the possibility to try out some local carriers, so I did some searching on domestic flights in Colombia. Luckily the country has a very developed air transport network (well, considering the terrain and the lack of decent land transport routes it is not really a surprise!) with quite a lot of competition around keeping fares affordable. I quickly settled for Medellin, Colombia’s second city and decided to spend a night there. There are at least three carriers competing on the BOG-MDE route and out of these I picked up Avianca and Aires.

Avianca had a nice mid-morning flight with their new ex-Mexicana A318s - a rare type which I’ve only flown once before (with Tarom) so that was a good choice (that particular flight was still operated by a F100 when I looked the first time, but they have now retired that type, a shame!). Booking at the Avianca website the fare was around 60 EUR, but a few days later they contacted me saying that my reservation was cancelled as my credit card had been refused (I guess that doesn’t match my usual spending pattern...). Oh well, I could book the same flight via Expedia so it was not a big deal, although I ended up paying 10 EUR more for it...

Aires on the other hand worked fine booking via their website. The mid-afternoon flight the next day cost around 55 EUR, not too shabby.

Finally I advised fellow global traveler and a.netter gabrielchew on this fare and a bit later he came back with the delightful news that he had taken advantage of it as well, although opting out to fly a bit earlier than me but joining me there in Colombia and flying on the same flights back (including coming to HEL with me).

This trip doesn’t get into a good start - first of all I manage only to get boarding passes for the HEL-ARN and FRA-BOG flights with a combination of OLCI and self service kiosk while passing through the airport the previous day. Since SAS and Lufthansa handle each other’s check in in Scandinavia and Germany (but not Finland anymore!) and their system’s aren’t compatible this is always such a hassle when having mixed itineraries on both carriers. Secondly while sitting in the bus to the airport I notice that my camera doesn’t want to play ball with the memory card any more - bugger!

So at the airport once through the fast track security I head directly to the electronics shop, luckily right opposite the SAS lounge. The guy tries the same things as I did but concludes that nope, doesn’t look good. So no other choice than to purchase some new memory cards, luckily they are running a special offer that’s not too much of a rip off and I walk over to the lounge holding a shiny new double pack of cards in my hand.

I fix up the camera with a new card and am happy to see it working fine (well I guess the photos above already confirmed that!).

After getting out of the plane I make my way towards the SAS transfer desk, where a very friendly girl soon prints me a boarding pass and says that she cannot do it for the FRA-BOG leg. I tell her that I already have one for that so everything is fine. I get a sequence number of 123 and see from the seatmap on her computer that the last row is completely empty - so make a mental note to ask for a seat there at the gate.

Then I go upstairs to the Scandinavian lounge. The lady at the reception is wearing a yellow badge saying “SAS Rock’n’Roll” so after registering myself I ask “So your name is Rock’n’Roll?” - “Yes, that’s my name!”. Gotta love these laid back people here!

Just a half an hour to spend here, enough for some wifi and drinks before heading to the gate. Strangely the boarding time has already passed but nothing’s happening - I saw the tail of the plane from the lounge so the inbound is already here.

Over at the gate I ask from one of the gate agents if row 30 is still empty and after learning that it indeed is get my seat changed to 30F.

The letters on the tail confirm this bird as D-AIQE, a new one for me.

As expected the last row stays just for me, albeit after boarding is completed for a quite good load factor of around 80% an FA tells a couple of large Swedish guys on the penultimate row that they are free to move to 30ABC for some more comfort which they promptly do.

Then nothing happens for a while, until around a quarter after our SDT the captain comes on, welcomes everyone onboard and tells the bad news - apparently Frankfurt has some really low clouds and bad weather today which has caused a reduction in the traffic flow and the subsequent ATC restrictions. For us that means that we have a take off slot around fifty five minutes from now, at 11.38! He concludes with “We know about your connecting flights, and maybe with the restrictions those flights are delayed as well!”

Only 20 minutes later the captain is back with the good news that there has been an improvement in the situation and we have a new take off slot at 11.18, or around fifteen minutes from now. The drink service is stopped - I’m not sure if everybody got their drink or not, trash is hastily collected, the engines started and push back initiated 40 minutes late.

Once out of the bus I make a beeline for the passport control. Only a couple of people there so through in a jiffy, the very bored officer gives one quick stare at my passport and sends me on my merry way.

The BOG flight is not posting any delay and being late I decide to skip the planned visit to the new Senator lounge near the C gates as it is just too far away and instead shoot a photo of my ride to come at the gate - such a beauty:

I had reserved a seat on the last row when booking and even the prior day when doing OLCI it was still showing an empty seat next to me. Well, I’m a bit disappointed to see a girl sitting on the aisle seat when I reach it, but well, what can you do. She turned out to be quite nice actually, a Southafrican who frequently travels to South America for work and we chat on and off during the flight.

There actually is an empty seat on the last row, but it is the middle seat on the middle block of three. That’s pretty much the only empty one I see, but there might be some others further up

The pair of seats ahead of me plus some others nearby turn out to be occupied by more Finns - later on I chat some with them and of course they are here just because of that special fare... I bet there’s been quite a surge of travel between the Nordics and Colombia this fall!

The friendly captain makes a welcome speech, expecting us to be early into Bogota thanks to some nice favorable tailwinds. The flight time is expected to be around 10h15mins.

The purser is quite amazing, he makes all of his announcements in impeccable (well as far as I can understand certain languages) German, Spanish, French and English. There are quite a few Latino-looking crewmembers onboard as well, very much appreciated by the many Spanish speaking passengers, I’m sure.

Push back is ten minutes behind schedule. I don’t really like the PrivatAir colors:

It’s beef goulash with polenta and some vegetables, a starter salad, some bread and cheese and a a piece of almond/nut cake for dessert. Very very tasty, well done LH!

Well, the second to seventh hours of this flight are quite boring as basically there’s nothing to see but the Atlantic out of the window. Luckily I’ve got plenty of reading material and some movies and music on my Ipod to keep me busy. A lot of people congregate in the mid galley on top of the stairs from the toilet - I guess that would be technically illegal on flights to the US but here nobody cares. I also notice a large bunch of Romanian middle aged men standing there and taking advantage of the considerably better stocked self service cart there - not exactly the kind of group I’d assumed to be traveling to Colombia in the first place... Well, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em - so I grab a glass of wine from the cart when heading back to my seat.

I grab a nice nap of a couple of hours - hits the spot nicely. There’s no mid flight snack like on Gabriel’s flight or maybe I missed it while asleep - not that I’d really wanted anything. Frequent water and juice runs are done by the crew all throughout the flight, and if you ask they bring you whatever drinks you fancy.

Then it is time for the second meal service - the choices are chicken or pasta. I go for the chicken which turns out to be the same dish Gabriel got:

It’s chicken in honey-chili sauce with wild rice. Again a very tasty dish and I eat all of it with good appetite.

Landing is on runway 13L a nice 50 minutes early - total flight time around 10h20mins. Breaking is very heavy, the whole plane is shaking like crazy but we still use up the whole of the runway.

A very slow taxi follows to the international pier, followed by quite a wait for a jetway and deboarding. They actually put up some stairs on the back door which have me hoping that we can use both exits but unfortunately an announcement is made that these are not for passenger use. The cleaning crew is actually already waiting down on the apron.

Finally out of the plane it is a bit of a race towards immigration.

Bogota Eldorado Airport

Unfortunately there are quite a few international arrivals lately, so the queues are long:

Pretty much all the immigration counters are open, but it still ends up taking at least half an hour to get through. At customs a bored looking woman takes my declaration form and directs me to X-ray my luggage - nobody seems to care much though. Afterwards I exchange some Pesos at one of the many exchange counters (you have to give your thumbprint when doing so - weird!) and head outside to look for the official taxi counter.

They have a nice system here to avoid people getting ripped off - you go to a taxi counter, state your destination (easier said than done considering the weird local address system, more on that later), they give you a printout with the address and the amount of money it will cost which you then give to the taxi driver and in the end pay that amount.

So I do that and end up with a nice older man who has serious problems finding my hotel (which is nowhere near the airport despite Google Maps and the hotel website stating otherwise). We stop in two different ones to ask directions before finding the proper one - well the hotel is called “Royal Embassy Hotel” (overstatement of the year!) so first he stops at “Embassy Park Hotel” and then “Royal Something Hotel” and asks for directions at both before finally getting it right. Mind you that all these hotels are within five blocks or so of each other! A nice guy, he refuses any extra despite the running around in circles and only charges what was agreed - wow, if only taxi drivers in Italy were like this!

Well, the hotel turns out to be quite a disaster - interaction with the staff is very hard as their English is limited to around three words (this is one thing that surprised me about Colombia, somehow I assumed English to be more widely spoken!), the promised wifi doesn’t work at all and my room looks snazzy but is very basic and freezing. At least it wasn’t too expensive at 40 EUR and since I’m far too tired I just crash there.

This report ends here. The second part will cover my domestic flights in Colombia with Avianca and Aires and the beautiful city of Medellin.

Conclusions

A very nice experience on LH longhaul. The food was excellent, the A346 such a nice plane with rather good comfort, the crew extremely jolly and service minded and drinks free flowing (hear hear SAS and Iberia!) with an extremely generous pour for Gin! The IFE was a bit lacking especially on the movie selection, but then again I’m perfectly happy with my own stuff and an airshow so I’m easy to please! Last time I flew LH longhaul was back in 2005 with the 747, back then there were no PTVs on those birds, so this is a definitive improvement.

Considering the European carriers flying to BOG are AF, IB and LH I’m pretty sure LH is by far the best choice. Of all the carriers on the route Avianca might give it its money’s worth, though.

Delighted to read the first part of your adventure to Colombia.

I think LH performs pretty well on these Transatlantic flights. Although not many carriers fly to BOG directly from Europe I imagine competence to be fierce and probably prices play a great role here; considering the money one pays to fly I assume LH to be the best from the ones mentioned in your trip report.

Your report is as interesting and well-written as the European ones. Great job!

I love A346, so far the best aircraft I have flown long-haul. By the way, you keep flying the same planes I have some time before; D-AIHH took me from YVR to FRA back in March 2008. It is one of those LH A346 without a First class section, isn't it? At least there was none when I was on board.

Great to see you flying outside Europe for a change! Good idea to take advantage of that great fare!

I'm a bit surprised that they have US style pancakes in HEL rather than Finnish/Swedish style thin ones.

I flew D-AIQE on12Jun95 LHR-HAM (my only visit to HAM so far) so it's at least 16 years old 

I agree wiith you that food on LH long-haul is very good and that IFE is lacking. Too bad you didn't have much choice for main course but that's to be expected when you are in the back. I flew MUC-LAX on D-AIHR in Mar11 after a day of spotting with PlaneHunter.

For me, the choice Europe-BOG would be AF; better food and perhaps better IFE.

Looks like very long lines in immigration in BOG; good it only took 30 mins to clear.

Hotel looks VERY basic but EUR 40.00 is a good price. Looks more like a suburb than downtown BOG.

LH4116; that's NOT Drottningholm Castle where the Swedisg King resides.

Some names were transferred to A346s and then disappeared from the A320s. However, not in this particular case - for whatever reason.

I only see four empty seats in the pictures, we don't know about the rest of the cabin. And it's not just J Class which earns money. Y Class can contribute to revenue a lot - not every seat is sold cheaply. And you never know how many upgraded people or miles redeemers you have in J Class. Last but not least, cargo can make a flight profitable even if many seats remain empty.

Well, I like them - flown a few segmens with them now and they are far better than the old ones. Especially apparent after getting the old seats on FRA-MUC on the way back and then the new seats on MUC-HEL. Your father sounds rather biased to me.

Why does a dog lick its balls? Because it can! You know I just can't get enough of flying, so if I can add some additional segments (plus a meagre amount of miles) for 20 EUR per segment why not? On the outbound ARN-FRA was also a new route for my log, have flown HEL-FRA quite a few times already.

Yes, there was quite enough time. Still a bit annoyed by the delay as I wanted to check out the new Senator lounge but it is so far away from the B gates I decided to skip it.

3h40mins based on the original schedule. The FRA flight leaves very late as Bogota is so high they have to take off quite late in order the air to be cooler than during the day.

Nice to see more and more people coming down to Colombia, tourism has grown exponentially in the last few years, plus the very large growth in foreign investment and the growth in the economy has put a large strain at BOG, it went from 7 million to just about 20 million pax per year in the last 5-6 years.

That area is not exactly the nicest, it can take 10 minutes to the airport with no traffic, but 20-30 at rush hours. Sadly that area, which basically caters for City Fair Grounds is the only cheap hotel area anywhere near the airport. Plenty of nicer hotels near the airport including the Habitel www.hotelhabitel.com which is at the airport grounds, but usually all quite expensive. The Salitre City area has also Marriot, Holiday Inn, Sheraton, among others etc, just 5 minutes from the airport. Don´t expect English spoken outside the business world, do not forget Colombia has been outside the traveller maps for many years and you can fly for hours or drive for days and nothing but Spanish will be spoken, so most of our tourists have been Spanish speakers. Things are changing but it will take time.

Interesting point of view, for me nothing easier than an alphanumeric address system set on a grid.

I wonder what a suburb means to Europeans, I am more used to the term suburb in US terms. Most of Bogota is either house rows or apartment building rows. Depending on the area 4, 6 or 12 story high. What we call the International Center has 10 or so 30-40 story high buildings and what we call La Candelaria has the historic downtown which dates back over 200-300 years where all the government center is located. Northen Bogota is where all the newer areas are located, including most upscale bars, restaurants, hotels, malls, shops, etc.

That is true, yet if anybody is interested Villavicencio just a short Aires Dash 8 hop from BOG is VVC (Villavicencio Vanguardia Airport) home to a very large operational fleet of DC-3´s that cover the Colombian Eastern Plains and Jungles.

Mostly 727´s operated by LAS and Aerosucre Cargo airlines, also one operated by the Colombian Airforce code named Apollo and based at CATAM Airforce Base which is located inside BOG grounds. Also Colombian Airforce operates a 707 code named ZEUS and 767 code named JUPITER.

As said before slow bureacratic decissions and unexpected high growth at the airport have it quite overcroweded. The new international terminal will open by mid-2012 before the phased demoliton of the existing terminal to continue the expansion of the new terminal.

It might not be in its best shape, but it is definitelly not run down, plus for all matters any historic area such as La Candelaria is far from crap.

It is actually 2 hours 40 minutes, arriving around 7 p.m. and departing around 9:45 local time. Not sure how much the extra distance to FRA affects take off, the first of the 2 IB flights that operate departs at 5:15 p.m. also in an A340-600. AF also departs at 5:35 p.m. but it operates A340-300.

Well, that walking distance really is APPROXIMATE. A couple of weeks ago waiting to board another 717 ride to OUL I looked at the monitor located just opposite gate 13 and saw that my flight was indeed departing from gate 13 that is 2 minutes (!!!) walking distance away. Seriously more like 2 seconds...

A346 certainly is my favourite aircraft, so congrats! Although I´ve never had a change to fly any, so I hope I will catch it one day as well!

LH longhaul product is quite ok, for me atleast. Yes, IFE could be better but otherwise I have no complaints!
