Introduction

This was a very impromptu trip and I only decided to embark on this journey two days before my travel date. As a Nigerian citizen, I need a visa to go almost anywhere on this earth. This always calls for stressful and annoying visa appointments! This time around, I had to apply for my schengen visa in the UK because I study here. The German embassy issued me a visa that was only valid for one week which and that was extremely annoying! I usually get a 1 year multiple visa from home. Well, it is never really a good Idea to get a visa and not use it thus this trip. I decided it was time to try use LH again. These were going to be my 23rd and 24th flights with Lufthansa and I must say they had all been positive experiences so far. So I wanted to give them another try. Since I booked my flight late, I was only able to get a business class seat which was ok because at least I got to use the lounges

I had to travel from Sheffield to London very early in the morning as my passport was with my aunt and I had to get it off her. It cost me a whooping £190 to Heathrow. It usually costs me £60! The reason was that I was leaving quite early and my rail card had just expired.

empty train (now I see why the ticket price was high :eek

Once I got to Heathrow T1, check in was quick as was security. I was so hungry but I was hungry for some caviar:D so I found my way to the sea food bar by Caviar House & Prunier and had a plate of tsarina which was awesome as usual http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3236/5845028799_35c466fa5d_b.jpg

Once I was done, I went off to the star alliance lounge which was packed. Nevertheless, I found a seat but changed almost as soon as I sat down because it was too public. I eventually found my self a cosier spot and just relaxed there until it was time to board.

The Flight
Carrier: LH
Flight No: 907
Aircraft: Airbus A320-200
Registration: D-AIZI
Flight duration: 1hr
Seat No: 3A

Boarding was quick and the crew welcomed guests in a nice manner. My flight was delayed for 2 hours due to ATC relocation at FRA. After boarding was complete, we had to wait for some suitcases to be off loaded as the owner did not board the flight. This caused further delay. The seats were the new NEK seats and I must say they were very comfortable and quite roomy (I am 6ft1). The cabin was very sleek and modern and i liked it. It was perfect for a 1 hour flight

We took off from runway 27L in some rainy weather which was quite interesting.

The flight was quite bumpy at first but turbulence doesn't scare me any more. I experience alot more with the tinny Cessna I fly.

Service soon started with our rather professional and pleasant crew. The weren't overtly friendly but I definitely would't say they were cold. More like classy, I would say.

The meal was exceptionally nice and the quantity was just right for a 1 hour flight.

This small meal reminded me of one of the reasons I love LH. I am yet to experience a bad meal from them.

The crew took a while to clear up the trays. While this was being done we started our descent into FRA. I simply love flying to FRA because of the plane action and variety of airlines and aircraft there! A very good airport for plane spotting indeed.

The flight turned out to be lovely despite the delay and I really could't ask for more on such a short flight. Once we landed, FRA looked a little bit quiet. This was due to the reduction in aircraft movements because of the changes in ATC but there were still heavies here and there as usual. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2801/5846296012_af7beca3e0_b.jpg

Immigrations was quick and soon afterwards I hopped into a cab to the Westin. Frankfurt is a really nice and contemporary/modern city with a very old and rich history. I was impressed with my first sights of the city.

Once I was done with dinner, I showered and jumped into bed after a really long day.

The following day, I decided to do a little sight seeing of my own. The concierge gave me a map and advised me on the best places to go to. Of course, before my trip, I had done a little research on the city and at the end of the day, I barely used the map. Before I left, I had to fuel my self up with some food as I knew I was going to walk a lot.

This was my 8th trip to Germany but this was only the second city I had visited in Deutscheland. My last seven trips were to Munich. A city which I have a really soft spot for. So I decided to see if Frankfurt has what it takes to win me over.

After walking around the huge city centre, I found my way to the historical Saint Bartholomeus's Cathedral. This cathedral is over 600 years old and more importantly was the site were the Holy Roman Emperors were crowned. It was destroyed during WWII but has since been rebuilt in a more subtle/minimalistic style. It was still stunning nonetheless.

I have to say I love Frankfurt a lot. It's not your typical European city. Skyscrapers, modern architecture, shops and a lot of history are all in the city. It may not be as beautiful as Paris, but in terms of contents, it is at par with any other major European city IMHO.

Sunday came and it was time for me to go. I wish I had more time to spend but my visa was expiring the day after and I was alone. Next time I would definitely go with some friends.

I left for the airport quite early as I wanted to do some plane spotting at terminal 2. When I got to the airport, I checked in my small duffel bag in order to give me more freedom to move about. Check in was quick and the gate number was given. We were initially going to board at gate B26. I found my way to T2 with the famous Frankfurt Skytrain and was treated to some wonderful views of concourses B East and C. The sky was bright and the view was so magnificent I just kept staring and forgot to take a picture. I decided I would do that on my way back to T1 but the weather changed drastically  http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6128/5965858565_ff439f53dd_b.jpg

I was extremely delighted with the view from the spotting area. I was so lust there, I probably would have missed my flight if rain hadn't driven me away LOL. It was fantastic. This was the first time I saw an A380 for more than 5 minutes. Every time I see one at LHR, it's either we are taxing past it or it is taxing past us. This wasn't close enough but eventually I got a better treat

Security and Immigrations was swift and I did some more spotting and window shopping in the terminal before going to the lounge.

I have been following the development at FRA and it was good to see a lot of progress. The last time I was at FRA was in 2008 and a lot of work was going on at concourse B. It was good to see it in a more modern and cleaner state than it was the last time I was there.

The Lounge

The Business class lounges at FRA have also undergone some facelift. I was in the lounge at B west and I have to say this was a great improvement over the previous offering. I found it sleek and modern enough. Not the cosiest in the world but it was nice to be in. The food selection was minimal but the drinks were a lot. I was so confused I just had a coke and some kind of olive salad which was quite tasty.

The flight was delayed again. The reason was the same as before but this time, strong winds also contributed to it. This was quite evident during take off. Our gate number changed and I was informed by text. This is a really good feature that I like a lot. On my previous flight I was also informed about the delays by text. Quite convenient I must say. The new gate was B24 and it just happened to be outside the lounge and next to the previous gate so it wasn't an inconvenience at all. Once I descended the flight of stairs from the lounge, I looked to my right and saw D-AIMG parked at gate B28. I was so excited. I went to the seating area in front of it and just sat there. I kept looking at it for a while before I started taking pictures. As much as I love the 747, I have to say this aircraft is amazing. It's beautiful in it's own way  http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6070/6060470697_1d42a6116d_b.jpg

When I eventually got to the gate, it was full. I could tell from the amount of people that this was going to be a full flight. Boarding was announced almost immediately with Business class and Star Gold passengers boarding first. 0tI was quick and easy. The new subway-like boarding system seemed quite effective and efficient. I was greeted by a male and female flight attendant. They were very pleasant and were even more engaging than their colleagues on the outbound sector. The captain apologized for the delay and explained to us the reason for it. Before we knew it, the doors were closed and we started push back. We would eventually taxi all the way to runway 18 for a very short but really windy take off.

Once the seat belt signs were turned off, service soon started. The seats on this aircraft were the old ones which I found even more comfortable than on the outbound flight. Today, it was a vegetarian cold tray. I don't really like fruits that much but it was ok. The cheese was amazing but I didn't care so much for the desert.

The trays were cleared on time by one of the lovely smiling FA's. They were really happy to serve us. They even offered us more food from Y if we wanted. My seat mate did opt for some and it seemed she enjoyed it a lot. The rest of the flight was uneventful.

We arrived smoothly at LHR exactly an hour after take off.

Conclusion

This turned out to be a wonderful trip. It was stress free and very entertaining despite the fact I was alone. Up until this trip, I hadn't travelled alone to a new city before. It was a first for me and I would definitely do this more often if I am given the opportunity.

As for LH, they didn't fail to deliver. I am simply in love with the elegance of the airline. There is something about the image and culture of the airline that I relate with very well. These flights reminded me of how much I liked LH in the past. Whenever I am given the opportunity to use them again, I would not hesitate.

I would put up the videos for the FRA-LHR flight soon.

Hope you all enjoyed it and sorry for the number of pictures. I took a lot and a had a really hard time selecting them Previous trip report

Hello

Fantastic Trip report - actually I have just noticed that there are a lot more German reports recently - but could just be in my Head.

Nice report. I passed through Frnakfurt last weekend. I was planning on spending some time there, but in the end got an earlier train up to Hamburg - next time I'll stay longer!

Quoting ogepma (Thread starter):
It cost me a whooping £190 to Heathrow

Yikes, pretty expensive from Sheffield. A few years ago I was able to get £3.95 singles from Sheffield to St.Pancras really easily.

Quoting ogepma (Thread starter):
The meal was exceptionally nice and the quantity was just right for a 1 hour flight.

Looks nice. The last time I flew LH Biz FRA-LHR (which admittedly was a while ago), there was a choice of 2 hot meals.

Very nice report and pics. That train fare is crazy !

The Caviar is lovely how much did you pay for that if you dont mind me asking? I must stop by there next time.

I must say I am a bit dissapointed by the meals . Just looks very bare especially for what you pay for the J Class fare.

Lovely photos of Frankfurt I always enjoy that city.

Thank you very much! You should next time if you can. It's like a mini London. Has everything there minus the huge population

It was totally ridiculous. I really don't see how they can justify that price. Prices have really gone up lately

It seems they have downsized a bit but at least the quality was still there on my own flights.

It cost around £24 or so. Not too expensive compared to the other offerings they had but the taste was super!

To be honest I wasn't disappointed because it tasted really well and was quite filling. The last time I used short-haul C on BA the meal was just a salad as well. LX on the other hand serves a lot more in short-haul C.

Really nice and interesting check. Did you consider using LCY for one of the sectors ? I ask, because the commuter planes used by LH on this route operate in C class with a 1-1 layout (ie the adjacent seat is blocked). It would have made a good comparison with LH's C product ex-LHR.

Thanks! I actually never really considered it but would consider next time. I am sure it will be less stressful to travel through LCY.

Hi!

Many thanks for the report. Was nice to fly with you in style to Frankfurt. I've been there twice but both times with Ryanair to Hahn and then the bus ride. Somehow you do things a little better! That Westin hotel looks awesome with the room and the food!

Many thanks.

Hey there

Thanks a lot for posting and sharing this excellent trip report. I really enjoyed the pictures from Frankfurt as well.

I visited FRA in 2007 and was very pleasantly surprised, precisely because I was not really expecting much, turned out to be a very pleasant visit. Downtown is an interesting mix of modern and old.

Quoting ogepma (Thread starter):
As a Nigerian citizen, I need a visa to go almost anywhere on this earth. This always calls for stressful and annoying visa appointments! This time around, I had to apply for my schengen visa in the UK because I study here. The German embassy issued me a visa that was only valid for one week which and that was extremely annoying! I usually get a 1 year multiple visa from home.

Having a Mexican passport I can only sympathize with you. Although we are lucky with a few countries, I usually just try to plan my travels to avoid having to get Visas.

A one week visa sounds terrible !! Everyone needs to change plans sometimes and it's nice when they give you some leeway for this. At least you were able to make use of it. Nothing worse than going through the hassle of a visa in vain :S

That meal does look very nice, it's not very big but considering the short length of the flight it looks good.

Looks good but not quite as nice as the meal for the LHR-FRA flight. It really needs some meat on it : )

Once again thanks a lot for the report, looking forward to seeing more, love those pics.

Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it. My mum once did that by 'mistake' and she was going to Frankfurt for just one night. She had no Idea Hahn wasn't in Frankfurt. The food was awesome!

To be honest I knew a bit about the city before visiting but was not expecting much either. I was expecting mainly banks and insurance companies lol. But it is actually a shoppers paradise. They have everything!

We Nigerians need visas to go almost every where. I can't really blame the countries though but it's just so stressful. I just wish they could make the process easier. The few countries that I know we don't need a visa to go to are not in my short-term interests unfotunately. Usually the minimum I get for a Schengen visa is 3 months. This time they were just stubborn maybe because it was my first time applying on my own.

Quoting SR117 (Reply 14):

Especially on the LHR-FRA sector. The other meal was actually nice albeit I agree with you that some meat in it would have been good Lol.
