Introduction
This trip started innocently as the return segment of an ARN-HEL-ARN ticket on SAS I had bought to take me home from an earlier trip. Booking it as a return brought the per segment price down a bit plus allowed me better flight times on the outbound (with the cheapest one way fares one always seems to end up on the nasty midnight flight!). So I was left with a ticket on the first SK flight of the day at 6.50 on a random Wednesday in November.
Figuring out my options I finally decided to try out the new FlyBe Nordic Bromma - Tallinn service which was booked 49 EUR. Another thing weighting heavily on the scales was the fact that Diners Club recently added Malmö Aviation’s Yellow Room, the only lounge at BMA to its list of accessible lounges and I really wanted to try out that one as well.
From TLL I could’ve just taken either the ferry or the standard BT connections via RIX home, but I have done those far too many times so where’s the fun in that? After a bit more of shopping around I found that I had enough time to connect to City Airline’s TLL-GOT flight. I had wanted to fly that flight ever since I saw their ERJ-145 taking off right over my (then) company’s offices at TLL (an amazing sight!) many years ago. I had flown CF once before, but didn’t really mind another chance to do so and booked a ticket. The flight was a bit cheaper if booked under the SAS codeshare so I did so for around 75 EUR (which in retrospective turned out to be a very good decision, stay with me here).
Finally to close the gaps I booked SK to ARN and KF home. As a nice bonus the Blue1 flight would be operated by one of the Golden Air ATRs - meaning this would be a new carrier for me on this route - I have done it with SAS, Blue1 (and Air Botnia), Finnair, Norwegian and FlyME before. Oh and the first time doing it in an ATR, although not in a turboprop as KF used to operate the Saab 2000 on the midnight flight back in the days...
Here’s the intended route:
Yes, I wrote “intended”, implying that something would be up. My luck with flight cancellations has lately been rather bad and of course I got an email advising me that City Airline would be canceling the whole route a couple of weeks before my flight. Yippee. So luckily I was booked under the SAS codeshare (and on SAS ticket stock of course) so I decided to skip Expedia (where I booked the ticket from) as completely useless and called the Eurobonus Gold reservation hotline (a special 24h service with really nice Danish agents as opposed to the incompetent outsourced staff you get on the regular lines which even cost money to call!) and a very friendly agent offered me a rerouting via ARN as an alternative. Oh well, that didn’t sound terribly exciting, but what can you do - at least I would be getting two flights instead of one and another ride with the Estonian Air CRJ-900 so I accepted.
So here’s what my itinerary had been transformed into:
This is a bit different report as most of these flights are pretty standard stuff so I’ll focus on less text and more pictures for the mundane flights and add details where details are due.

After a short night (my previous night was spent doing this Danish Blue: HEL-CPH With A DAT MD-87 (by FlyingFinn76 Nov 27 2011 in Trip Reports) ), half asleep I’m back at HEL T1. Interesting stuff confiscated at the security check - these are cans of Lidl -brand pea soup (!) and not exactly liquid if you ask me:

Indeed there had been a schedule change to an 737-800 with winglets - nice as I’ve only flown two flights with the SAS examples before and Frida Viking would be a new addition my log as well.
I had selected 10F the exit row as my seat from OLCI - well the seat assignment was retained but of course I am nowhere near the exit row on this flight and legroom is horrible:
Rather uncomfortable as the cabin is very hot and the air con isn’t really working. Plus I have two seatmates.
Oh well, push back nine minutes early (that’s my SAS - the world’s most punctual airline!), take off from 22R, deep sleep until landing on runway 26 less than 40 minutes later and a jetway next to this abomination:

Still half asleep I stumble through the airport, down to baggage claim and outdoors to catch the next Flygbussen to the city.
The 45 minute drive is again spent sleeping.
At CityTerminalen I’m delighted to see the next bus to Bromma leaving just across the street so I catch that. By this time it looks like I’ve had enough sleep for now as I stay awake and read my morning paper.

After a while of working, watching planes and drinking coffee it is time to head airside. I see the inbound plane (in full FC livery!) landing by the time I get to the departure hall:
I shoot a photo of the plane landing, but it came out so bad it’s not worth posting. But at least I could read the reg of the photo: -ATF which is a bugger, this is the second oldest ATR-72 in the FC (now BE) fleet and an old friend of mine - I’ve flown with her already eleven times! Oh and yeah, that registration does bring a grin to my face as well, as it must do to many Americans!
Right after the plane landed they put out the parking stand on the diplay (not sure why they are still showing the FC flight number, though):

I’m not sure how BE has staffed these flights, but the friendly FA waiting for me at the door looks more Finnish than Estonian to me so I greet her in Finnish. After she answers in the same language I say “I wasn’t sure whether it is Estonian or Finnish spoken onboard” but she assures me that the whole crew is “of course” Finnish today.
The good old Finncomm cabin - comes with excellent legroom on these older -72s (the newer ones have an additional row thus somewhat smaller legroom):
I count the load as 14 passengers, not exactly stellar considering this plane has 68 seats. All announcements are done in English and Finnish, with Estonian played off a tape. The flight time today will be 55 minutes.
Departure is two minutes early, but we have to hold short of runway 12 for a while before a Golden Air Saab 340 lands and we are free to go.

Take off is certainly very impressive - the low load and short runway plus the amazing take off performance of these nifty turboprops have us literally leaping into the air after using maybe a third of the runway:

My first thought is that it must be operating for airBaltic (yeah, summer 2010 is still fresh on my mind!) but I go to check out the gate and it is showing an OV flight to ARN (unfortunately the 19.00 flight, not my 13.50 one!). This sounds interesting so I go over to the next gate which is just closing an OV flight to CPH and ask the gate agents. It turns out that Carpatair is indeed operating some flights for OV on that bird until the end of the year. Wow, this sounds very interesting to me so I say “Really? Now that sounds like I really need to book a flight on that.” The agents are a bit surprised by this and ask me why and I explain that I like to fly with different airlines and planes and that I was supposed to fly the City Airline ERJ-145 today. They seem to find the whole concept of someone doing things like this just for fun and out of interest in aviation very odd, but wish me a nice flight anyway and welcome me back at Estonian Air anytime. Nice.

At least there’s a separate security checkpoint when entering T4 from Sky City that is not as crowded as the main one.
Still having enough time I head upstairs to the SAS domestic lounge. This one is not a *G lounge, instead it is restricted only to Eurobonus Gold members.
There’s no reception - entrance is through these automated turnstiles - simply scan your card or boarding pass (there’s also a separate button to admit a guest):

I grab some chips and a glass of “beer” and sit down opposite a guy reading Jenna Jameson’s autobiography (seriously, I wouldn’t do that in public) and then realize that my notebook (the paper kind, used for making notes for these reports) is nowhere to be seen!
I turn my backbag upside down, but nope, can’t find it. I remember writing stuff down during the previous flight, so I must’ve left it onboard the Estonian flight! I head quickly downstairs, brush off the Amex credit card touts with some Finnish swearwords (they sure are handy), find the SAS service desk empty as is my gate but then notice an agent at another gate where a SAS flight to OSD is leaving soon. I go there, explain my plight, she makes some calls with her walkie talkie, I spend my life’s longest five minutes waiting for the answer and then get a huge smile on my face as she says “They found it!”. Next I confuse her a bit explaining that I’m now going to Gothenburg but will return in a few hours and fly to Helsinki so if she could ask the ground staff to deliver it to the SAS lounge at T5 (flashing my gold card). She looks me a little oddly (I get that a lot) but in the end understands and says that it will be taken care of - plus mentions that she will be here all night if I still need something.
I thank her profusely and head to my gate just opposite, notice that the originally scheduled 737-600 is now a wingletted -800 model (minor feeling of deja-vu!) and read a VERY familiar registration off the front wheel well door: RRJ (major feeling of deja-vu!). Yes, the same equipment change and the VERY same plane I flew here this morning. Not amused.
Boarding is called right after this so I join the queue and trundle down the jetway. There’s a door leading to the tarmac at the jetway and passengers on the back rows are asked to go there and board using the back stairs to speed up the process.
The cabin crew consists of a bunch of grand mothers, seriously the average age must be around 70 minutes. But they are very nice, in that Swedish grandmotherly style.

These front rows are usually reserved for status pax and now I can understand why. This is pure luxury compared to my seat in the morning.
Lots of pax on this flight (but an empty seat next to me, yay!) so boarding takes its sweet time. Because of this the world’s most punctual airline ends up departing 2 minutes late, stop the press!

By the time I wake up we are again deep into cloud and fog - weather at Gothenburg seems to be even worse than ARN & TLL.

The lounge reception doubles as TF’s check in desk, the girl is a bit confused until she realizes I only want to use the lounge and not to check in and welcomes me inside.

A couple of hours are spent doing more work and drinking copious amounts of coffee. Having had enough of that I grab a hot dog from Pressbyrån and head airside.
A nice idea to offer pax the possibility to fill their own water bottles - but bad execution as this faucet is actually broken:
Lots of pax around the domestic area - all the three airlines flying to STO, SK, DY and TF have flights departing within half of hour of each other.
The inbound is a few minutes late arriving, but nothing major, quite surprising considering the weather conditions outside. Yes, another -800 but at least this is a different one this time (and no winglets). LN-RRS is another new registration for my log.
Note to PlaneHunter: this is NOT the name of the plane - it’s a Scandinavism:
Dunno why but I went with row 1 this time - turns out to be a bad idea. There’s an annoying businesslady on the aisle seat who stands there yapping on her iPhone and blocking my access to my window seat, which of course annoys the passengers on 1DEF side as I’m standing there in order not to block the aisle...
The Chinese-American girl on the middle seat is making faces at this - she turns out to be very nice and we chat on and off during the flight, she is very worried about her 20 minute connection to UME (wow, is domestic MCT really 20 mins at ARN?!) but I assure her that it is a small terminal and there are still flights to UME later should the worst case scenario happen.
The bulkhead wall isn’t in the best of conditions:
Boarding takes a long time - an almost full plane and tons of hand luggage are a bad combination.
Departure is six minutes late this time, wow, SAS has really been going downhill lately!
The visibility is even worse this time, if possible. Take of is from 21.
Nothing to see outside again so I read my book and chat with the girl. In no time at all we are already on finals and land on runway 26 with a huge thud - this definitely was one of the hardest landings I’ve had for quite some time! Landing at the same airport the third time the same day is a new personal record for me! I’ve done it twice many times, but never thrice.
They announce the gate number for passengers to UME and LLA so I give the thumbs up to my seatmate who seems to be relieved.

The businesslady on the aisle seat was going through her emails on her laptop during the flight. I noticed that she put it to the overhead bin without any protective cover. So of course when the UME girl gets up and opens the bin the laptop falls straight down on the floor. The woman isn’t exactly happy about this and unleashes a stream of curses in Swedish. The girl luckily doesn’t understand and says so in English.
- “You MUST be careful when opening the lockers!”
- “But you shouldn’t put it in the bin just like that!”
- “No, if this broke it is YOUR FAULT!!!!!!!”
I decide to intervene since I don’t like the woman’s tone one bit (and her behaviour at GOT pissed me off) so I say loudly “You really should put it in its bag or case to protect it!”. The woman looks at me with a look that could kill lesser beings, says nothing and turns away fuming.
The girl turns to me and forms “Thanks, what an A-hole!” with her lips . I give her the thumbs up again and wish her a nice trip up to Umeå.
A leisure stroll through deserted Sky City to my favorite security checkpoint at T5 and familiar agents there with no queue whatsoever. Feeling rather happy I ask the girl screening the boarding passes there if she ever gets bored with her job on nights like this - she surprises me saying that they are actually open 24 hours a day (didn’t know that!) and it is only during the night that it gets boring when there are no passengers for hours. Oh well, if I’m ever stuck overnight here I’ll come and keep you company...
A quick stop at the lounge where I’m reunited with my little black notebook and thank the agent furiously (reminder to self: bring Christmas gifts for the staff on my last visit of the year in three weeks!).
Inside I’m delighted to see that instead of their usual offerings they have put out a cheese selection. I love cheese so this is great:
A bit later a certain L'enfant terrible of the Finnish business world (ok, he’s not exactly an enfant but definitely speaks terrible things) and one of the richest men in the country enters with his entourage (consisting of someone I think is his wife and some other prominent economic figures of our modest country). Turns out we are on the same flight to HEL, albeit they are of course in what they call “Business class” but Blue1 and me “Premium”.
The bus bringing us to the plane has the map of the free bus routes landside so looks like it is doing some moonlighting in this role:

I wonder what justifies them having this Finnish flag considering that this plane is 1) in the Swedish register and 2) owned and operated by a Swedish company with a Swedish AOC:
A packed flight, unfortunately no upgrade to Premium though. Packed seat as well:
This plane leaves five minutes early, takes off from 19R, employs two nice FAs who serve us coffee, flies to Finland in the darkness, makes really funny noises throughout our long and rough approach and finally lands on 22L after a lengthy flight time of over an hour.
A special mention must be made for the shape of this plane - considering that this bird is only one year old the cabin is in quite a bad condition and something is certainly broken as it makes a really annoying sound all throughout the flight. It sounds like some wires to the PA system are loose and causing some sort of nasty static sound through the speakers. It worsens when the engines are spooled up and the vibration increases. Since my seat was right next to the wings and engines it was quite bad at times, especially during our bumpy prolonged approach! This was my fourth flight with this bird, but I haven’t noticed it being this bad before, though. Hopefully they fix it soon. Other pax noticed it too, it wasn’t just me.

Conclusions
Well, this trip didn’t exactly fulfill its objectives thanks to City Airline stopping its TLL-GOT route, but at least I managed to log that FlyBe Nordic BMA-TLL route (as a sidenote: they are starting BMA-CPH next year, looks like I’ll be back...), found out about that Carpatair F70 operating for OV (and have now booked a ride on it!) and visited the very nice Malmö Aviation lounges at both BMA and GOT.
FlyBe on this trip was basically good old Finncomm plus BOB. The same crew, the same plane apart from the safety cards and company name in announcements. Me like.
Another nice ride with the OV CRJ-900, for sure a very beautiful and nice plane. A comfortable and short ride, nothing wrong with it really. And starting next year I think I will be flying more with them as they are resurrecting (again) their HEL-TLL route.
A bunch of comfortable flights with SAS - usual SAS quality in all aspects (but wait, the service is BOB so they are actually a shitty airline), good on time performance, friendly crews and basically no nonsense (but it doesn’t matter as the service is BOB so they are a shitty airline). Special mention to the Arlanda ground staff for getting my notebook back to me so fast, tusen tack!
And finally Blue1/Golden Air: well, I will not go out of my way to fly the ATR on this route any more - wasn’t exactly comfortable or that nice. They should fix up that plane, that kind of noises are quite scary for the majority of the passengers.
A week to go and another spell of travel ahead of me with four trips within a week. Things start out easily with a quick return trip to a special part of Finland doing HEL-MHQ-HEL with two different carriers. Happy contrails!

I'm doing overtime in reading your interesting reports. This one's no different. It's quite an achievement returning to the same airport 3x in a day, did you call the Guiness Book about that? My highlight here is definitely the OV CRJ-900. I just cannot get enough of that plane and the livery. I'll finally fly one of them coming home from the ARN meet in Jan so I'm very much looking forward to that.

What an idiot. Clearly she wasn't paying attention. Who puts their laptop in the overhead (undoubtely on top of another bag) without any protection? Of course it going to fall out. If the owner was on the ball she would have been standing up to get it out as soon as the seatbelt sign was off.

Have I ever said that SAS are a shitty airline? I've referred to them as faux and "non proper", and yes I've some sort of lovehate relationship to them. They're a great airline, a very nice brand, friendly staff, nice proper lounges, lovely looking livery, easy to use website, great FFP. BUT they suffer from one major flaw, and that is the lack of free food in Y (also the silly high fares for the classes above Y, starting at €1Million one way), and I'm sorry there's no way in universe that I'll ever truly like an airline that doesn't fullfill the requirements for a proper legacy airline.
They're like a great penthouse apartment, with a dead man's smell. No matter how nice it is, you just can't picture yourself living there.

In one of the last pictures from BMA where you can the the old control tower, it looks like they;ve torn down a building where I used to work. I guess things even at BMA change.......I had my last job there in Sweden before I emigrated to California.
Great to know that there's more legroom towards to front of those 738s. I'll keep that in mind if I ever get on one again.
Very good of SK's ground staff to get you back your notebook. Yes, you should get them something for Christmas!

My father once left his phone on board a CX flight at HKG. I had to explain to the ground agent a lot of times what was wrong, because his English was not that great. Once we were able to communicate he informed me that they have searched the aircraft and found no phone. I was walking back to share the bad news when he came running after me 'Sir, Sir, we find, we find!' It did took another 45 for the phone to be transported to the baggage claim, but it is a big airport.

Yes, you certainly could make an ass out of yourself in front of the other lounge guests (or the service staff if they happen to be around replenishing the buffet) and either jump over or crawl underneath them. They added quite a bunch of lounges last year, I don't remember when it was added but maybe sometime this autumn.

Those berries, plums, apricots and nuts plus crackers and cookies. What more do you really need? You get rather substantial sandwiches and the like onboard Malmö Aviation anyway (BTW when are you flying with them! This would be your new favorite non-faux airline).
I like the cups, they boast the classy TF logo (although I don't know why they stole the Finnish coat-of-arms lion, though!).

Seems some solid (and on time) flights, so well done by SAS and partners! I feel bad for Flybe Nordic though - operating with such loads sure isn't nice for their finances. But what could they expect founding (well, almost) an airline in the middle of this economic crisis!

Well, it wasn't my logbook, that's a separate one (with a large sticker boasting a DY 737-800 on the back!). This is simply note book to act as an extension to my memory...

FC was well versed on it, of all the airlines I've flown (136 currently) FC is the airline where the average load factors have always been the lowest. In one occasion I was the only pax in an -72 and a couple of times there have been only two us us...

Yeah, shame. I flew HEL-VBY with their ERJ-135 (my only flight on this diminutive jungle jet!) back in 2007 - it was okay but I'd definitely wanted to try the experience again.

So you drank the lattol ? Must have tasted pretty nasty ? But to me so does basically all Swedish beer, even regular beer which I think is about 3.5 % alcohol.

There's nothing like acting like a pompous ass to a complete stranger to make a person feel good, especially on a plane. All the better for the other complete strangers to see just how important that person is, eh? Good for you to engage in the defense of civility.
