So guys, let’s start with my second TR here
This time I’ve to fly to Manila, just for 1 day
My travel plan are quite strange, due the fact that there are no free seats available on the direct route Europe-Philippines, so I was forced to make a stopover in Incheon on the outbound flight, and a direct flight on the inbound.
The travel was not so “relaxing”…HAM-AMS-ICN-MNL-AMS-HAM, all in business class; the main reason for the trip was a 3 hours meeting, but at the end I enjoyed the destination, I never been in the Philippines before!
The flight from Hamburg to Amsterdam was planned to depart at 8.50AM, so I went to the airport more than one hour before…the airport of Hamburg are quite nice, and with a lot of parking!
Inside, the airport is clean, without much congestion, and the roof are really high, so it gives a good “feeling”:
At the beginning the check-in desk was not presidiated, but after 5 minutes a really nice agent took place and start my boarding procedure…Unfortunately, he was not able to give me the boarding card for the whole trip…he just give me the card until Amsterdam, but he assured me that I will got the other into the lounge in AMS…what a liar!!!
Just after the security check (with a priority lane, that is always a plus!) I went straight to the lounge; the lounge is quite small, but was not crowded at all, so I enjoied the time there; there are no free wi-fi, but in 2011, who cares!
BTW, a really nice view on the apron!
The food / drink selection was not so bad; take in mind that there were no more than 10 persons there…
And a quite strange of selection for me…chips, orange and coffee
After half hour of iPad and Email, I was advised by the attendant that the flight are boarding, and it was quite far from the lounge (well, far for this airport, for sure); after 10 min of walking, here we are, boarding in progress!
Plane data:
Model: Fokker 70 – Call Sign: PH-K2T
Flight: KL 1778 – Duration of flight: 1h10min for 236 miles
The seat was not so bad, a standard economy seat with the middle seat blocked; the bottle of water was forgotten by a F/A, that claim it back after 20 min of flight
The flight to AMS was really short, a little bit more than 1hour; however, the service was realy poor for a Biz Class…just orange and a biscuit, nothing else…
Then soon we approach AMS Airport…the port of Amsterdam is always impressive!
Then, with my big surprise, the KLM transfer desk don’t give me the boarding card for the other flight…I was forced to go out the terminal, and than require the cards to the check in counter of Korean; here the personnel was really polite and enjoyable (perfect Asian style) but honestly they was a bit unprepared…they asked me three times the visa for the Philipines…they don’t know at all that for a European Visitors was not required, and they make somethings like 10 phone call in Korea to verify that…
Then finally I went back again into the terminal, and I went to the KLM Lounge (one of the best lounge that I’ve ever seen in Europe) to enjoy the connection time (more or less 2 hours).
The lounge was so huge! There are a lot of space (and a lot of guest for sure); I’ve got some problem with unpolite and unfriendly personnel at the deck; I’ve asked her if it was possible to make a shower, and she shouted that the shower list was not there…now ok, I understand that she was overloaded by work, but what cost make a smile and show me the right way???
BTW, the buffet there was quite good:
And, most important thing overall, there was a smoking lounge
The plane was a 747, what a lovely queen!
Plane data:
Model: Boeing 747-400 – Call Sign: HL-7473
Flight: KE 926 – Duration of flight: 11h25min for 5320 miles
My seat was on upper deck;
I love this plane, but honestly, the biz class of Korean are horrific! The seat are not lie-flat at all, this is the maximum recline, impossible to sleep good:
The good thing is that you have a plenty of space where to place your belongings:
There was no amenity kit at all, just a pair of shoes and nothing else…bah…quite surprised…
The cabin was half empty, and so my near seat, that is always a plus;
Just after a while, they served the “aperitif”, an orange juice with some nuts…
But the seats are well furbished with all kind of magazine, great! Also very nice the idea of the stickers!
After the take off, the flight attendant start to serve the menu carte, what we have to eat today?
A good entry overall!
Then a small soup, quite tasty, but the bread was terrible…btw we are here for flight, not for eat!
The main course was quite good, but the flight attendant are really quick to serve the (few) passengers…looks like they want to go to rest soon
A very nice thing was the wine service, really nice idea!
And, of course, a bealyes and a coffee are always appreciated!
Meanwhile, my IFE was frozen…the choice of films and video are not so good; anyhow, iPad is all I need in a flight
The nights are coming, but it’s really hard to sleep on this seats
BTW, in one way or other, I felt asleep for some (few) hours…useless to say that there was no open bar at all…in any case, the pre-landing dinner was served, a mixed salad:
With some chicken, not bad at all
Ok, we are now approaching Korea! I was last time in ICN few years ago, but I have a wonderful memories of this airport, one of the best Asian airport overall! It always surprise me how is possible that in 2011 the flight over north Korea are still forbidden; we was forced to travel all around, and approach the APT by the sea side:
Here we are! And this nice surprire are waiting me!!! First Korean whale that I’ve ever seen!
Ok, more than enough for now, I will continue later with the approaching flight to MNL (much much better) and the return flight with KL
Hope you enjoy it!

Hi There
Nice introduction to your flights to MNL. AMS is a lovely airport for sure. Thanks for posting the first part.
Quote: the main reason for the trip was a 3 hours meeting
Wow! I guess video conferencing was not considered (or available)? I wish I worked for your company - which must have a very generous expenses policy!
Quote: Also very nice the idea of the stickers!
Nice to see the onboard service from KE. The wine presentation certainly looked different. However, re the stickers, this is far from a new or unique idea. Qantas were providing stickers like this at least 20 years ago.

Nice trip you had there - lots of flying for just a 3 hour meeting
Quoting MalboroLi (Thread starter): Unfortunately, he was not able to give me the boarding card for the whole trip…he just give me the card until Amsterdam, but he assured me that I will got the other into the lounge in AMS…what a liar!!!
So annoying when "alliance partners" can't do something as simple as print onward boarding passes
Quoting MalboroLi (Thread starter): the lounge is quite small, but was not crowded at all, so I enjoied the time there; there are no free wi-fi, but in 2011, who cares!
There was free wifi when I was there in October - got a wifi card from the front desk

Very poor indeed - looks like economy
Quoting MalboroLi (Thread starter): A very nice thing was the wine service, really nice idea!
Never seen anything like that before - interesting idea!
They usually give you a card at the desk that has a personal access code on it.

I'm not sure what Hamburg's problem is but I've taken two long hauls ex HAM (HAM-FRA-IAH and HAM-MUC-SIN) and both times I had to collect my onward ticket at FRA and MUC respectively. Quite annoying if your transit time is short.
Unless I missed something, your a.net suggests you're Italian. How come you're flying from HAM?
Anyways, great pictures and I look forward to the continuation! Thanks for sharing!

Nice report and photos!
Gosh, so many airlines have the angled J seats! I wish that they would make them either a little bit more padded, or have some protection so you didn't feel like you were going down, down, down ...
How nice to fly in the upper deck of a 747. Definitely something I'd like to try sometime!

= I have recently had weird experiences like this at KL AMS. While not as drastic as yours, I wonder if AF's horrid ground service is rubbing off on KL.

Great start of your Trippie !!!
Looking forward to your continuing-flight to MNL and back on KL...
A few small remarks:
HAM-AMS was done on PH-KZT; Dutch registrations never have a number in between their registration - gliders, though, only have numbers, like PH-1234
Do note also, a call-sign is different to a registration; callsign would have been KL1778 and not PH-KZT...callsigns change per flight, but registrations are fixed to the aircraft (until they're sold to another country/owner)...
Guess, your blocktime was over 1 hour on HAM-AMS; flyingtime, however, is usually between 45-50 minutes...don't know what you expected cateringwise on such a short flight, even though in 'business'-class ?...
Business-Class on KE looks very similar to KL on the 747-400; they're also, no fully flat-bed
Keep up the good work: looking forward to the rest...

Quoting abrelosojos (Reply 7): Weird because most agents have access to TIM.
... and I´m sure that check-in agents always have access to TIM.
Regarding Philippines: EU-citizens do not need any visa for stays up to 21 days although they need proof of return/onward travel.

- Odd, they really should know things like this.
KE J looks ok, the cabin colours are pretty soothing.

That is unacceptable, and if that is what they can served, at least pour the orange juice in a real glass and put the cookie on a plate ! I know for a fact even for flights less than an hour, both LH and LX will still serve a meal in business class for intra european flights and of course in china as well !
Quoting MalboroLi (Thread starter): And, most important thing overall, there was a smoking lounge
Don't we all like that ? It seems like only europe and most asia airports offer this kind of smoking lounge inside of the airline lounge.
Quoting MalboroLi (Thread starter): There was no amenity kit at all, just a pair of shoes and nothing else…bah…quite surprised…
It seems like this is a Korea companies practice, as even OZ has no amenity kit for business class pax except for flights out of ICN. Do you know KE will give an amenity kit in economy however ?
