HDN (Steamboat Springs, CO) - IAH CO 1489 F Class

The time came to fly home for the holidays, and I would be going home to ORD. The price for a ticket from HDN-IAH-ORD was nearly identical to the price of DEN-ORD, I'd rather fly a few extra hours than drive. This trip report covers the HDN-IAH portion of my trip. Sorry about the low quality of pictures (I used my camera phone).

Once I arrived at the HDN airport, the CO check-in agent was quite clearly new at the job, and check-in didn't run so smoothly, but due to the small number of people on this flight, it wasn't a big deal. First, she was having all of the customers check in on the automated computers. I ran into my first problem with this when the machine indicated that it was out of paper, and I have to check in with a person. The previous day, I had been upgraded to first class and the boarding pass the agent printed was for my original economy class seat. After calling the manager over, she easily took care of this though. Finally, my bags were checked and I was ready to go.

I really like the live direcTV on CO flights, it's a wonderful idea! I watched Shaun White win the Breckenridge stop of Snowboarding Superpipe of the Dew Tour.   He truly didn't deserve it, I think the judges are biased towards the poster boy.

I think they should have had the option of this or a small sandwich (similar to what LH offers on 2 hour flights in Y class). I would rather have had a small, simple sandwich than this. I wonder if this is cheaper for CO? I actually find the UA catering to be better than the CO catering. Maybe this will change with the merger?

Overall this flight operated smoothly, and the flight attendants did a good job. Several times they asked if I needed anything else after they had served the meal.

The meal is a joke. Nearly as bad as the Y meals to Europe.

I have flown Continental many times in First and Business First over the years and they really were " The Industry Leader" as Gordon would say. Since United and CO have joined forces, I have noticed a gradual but steady decline in CO's onboard service, particularly in catering. Before UA, Continental offered free meals on many flights to Y class passengers. After this integration however, CO's catering has been changed to align itself more to UA's standards. No free meals in Y and less than stellar offerings in First. Pre UA, a CO flight like this would have had a hot soup along with a more substantial main offering as well as a real dessert. I am simply stating what I have noticed since this merger has taken place. CO at one time was an industry leader in many areas including inflight service, but sadly, that is no longer the case. They are now just as mediocre as any other Legacy carrier and I attribute this to UA's direct influence on them. Just my observations.

I've had this many (recent) times on ORD-DEN on UA. On the next leg of my trip, a CO flight IAH-ORD the catering was only slightly better. (chicken pot pie, a small brownie, a joke of a salad)

IIRC, the cold plate has always been the meal out of EGE/HDN/GUC/MTJ etc. on return flights to IAH or EWR. The flights are roundtrip-catered from the origin due to the lack of catering facilities (or unwillingness of CO to contract with whomever the local caterer is) at the outstation. There is usually a normal hot lunch service on the inbound flight. I do not believe there is enough galley space on the 737 to store two hot services.

CO actually announced that they were switching to BoB in Y prior to the merger.

Funny...I have seen UAs standards drop after the merger agreement...I suppose its all one persons opinion.

Just because there are only 4 people on your flight, doesn't mean there will be 4 people on every flight! I wish they could create a standard for their First class short haul meal service. CLT-IAH is shorter than HDN-IAH, but yeah a hot meal is provided in First class on that route. Then again, it is likely HDN lacks catering facilities.

CO and UA had not merged at that point...I don't even think they had announced an agreement yet so whatever choices CO made were their own.

Actually, that isn't correct, CO stopped free meals prior to the integration, and even when they had free meals, I would rather have a nice BOB, then what they were offering for free. PMCO also did away with the soup a while ago...not that it was that good. Also, UA is aligning their cabin offerings with CO, not the other way around.

It strikes me a funny that everyone always thought CO was so much better, but in the end, it was just a bunch of P.R. and spin, because, honestly, their offering, whether it was food or seats, was no better and no worse than the other legacy carriers out there.
