Toulon, a couple of CR-K´s and a nice meeting

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/F1103/F1103026.jpg

Bonjour, dear readers,

where to go in early October for a couple of last sunbeams before the upcoming winter season?.
What about the Cote de Azur?.
There is a new place to pin on my departure airports map and there is also a long planned, but never done till now, meeting to go.
Well, let´s ask S., the usually relaxed guy from the scheduling department, to fix something together this way.
Surprise, he shows me a really less covered plane type, not from STR this time, but anyway worth the longer way to go.
Should I need more reasons to do this trip?.
No, definitely not!.
This is today´s routemap:

Thanx to:

Here is the latest departure airports map:

And the actually done routes:

Not much longer than a week ago since the return from Austria:

I´am ready to hit the road and go again with local company ahead and S. working discrete in the background.

Service Air France AF 5781 operated by Brit Air
Scheduled: 13.35 // 14.35

Now, that´s what I call a lazy early afternoon departure.
Usually some two hours on the motorway to fly out of SXB. On the way at 10.00 am, low traffic and short after noon at the airport.
This leg is fixed by AF directly, the fare really good, 55.00 Euro´s.
OLCI works well with the AF website, seat 22F for me.
Parked the car in the garage with direct entrance to the terminal, up the stairs straight ahead for the first view to the screen.
Blue air to Constanta sounds also interesting but no, I´ll stick with AF to LYS, no further info here
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/F1103/F1103001.jpg
The open baggage area, always interesting from my point of view
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/F1103/F1103002.jpg
A couple of flights around my departure time, but nevertheless close to no time to wait at security.
Also a couple of pax around the gates, but far from crowded today, especially when passport control opens and the Constanta flyers leave the central waiting area.
No lounge here.
Boarding is pretty well ontime, by bus from gate 3.
The CR-K is on schedule. We will see what´s waiting on the apron.
The nose looks something like this

1.40 pm, close to ontime, "Britair" is ok now for the 40 minutes hop to LYS from the 2400 meters runway 23.
12 degrees and sunny conditions.
The modern style bright grey leather seaters pictured from the second to last row. Changed to 25F finally and two for me after boarding as the last passenger.
The load is 80% in the end

Well, you know, it needs some time to fix the pictures and once again I´am the last pax to board the plane.
Row 1 is called as premium seating on this planes.
A middle aged nice female FA at the planes door and she agreed with me, that it´s not ok to leave seat 1A all alone on this service. Two for me here.
More welcomed when we know that the load is 90%.
One young and ok male FA is also working the cabin.
Legroom is pretty good here, the cabin is clean

He´s once again inflight on the mike with the latest weather report for Nice. Well, 22 degrees and sunny, that´s what I´am looking for.
No route or flightlevel information.
Still 11 degrees and cloudy, when "Britair" now wants to leave LYS from the 4000 meters runway 36L. It´s 3.45 pm, ten minutes late, for the hop down to Nice. I´ve don´t noticed any flight duration announcement.

Out in the public to the meet Madame Concorde/Marie.
We´re in contact since a longer time ago and talked a couple of numbers about a visit to Nice.
Finally she decides to welcome me and show me a little bit around for the next hours.
Really warm welcomed, Marie, you know.
1.00 Euro´s later the local bus drives us down to the city center where I´ve decided to check in for the hotel first.
The Grand Hotel Le Florence should be the place for me to stay in Nice.
Local company is not only nice, no, it´s also absolutely helpful.
Strikes in France?. No, not that I´ve even noticed it before, that there is a high level strike culture here.
Marie told me about rumours around some upcoming strike action by SNCF employees.
Well, I should ride the SNCF tomorrow morning.
So it seems good to check this first at the main train station.
And more thanx to Marie, she managed it to a special queue entrance, where a also in case of lots of waiting people nevertheless nice female confirmed that there is something coming up for the next day.
She asked and called and finally told us that my ride,
btw., the only one possible around this time, isn´t running.
She rebooked me to an earlier train which should be ok.
So, imagine when I´am at the station the next morning and don´t see my train on the timetable with no later connection possible.
Puh, thanx again, Marie.
The hotel´s location is convenient and quiet some meters only from the main pedestrian zone
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/F1103/F1103050.jpg
In between the main train station and the promenade. Sure a recommendable place to stay

Finally time to walk together to the main train station where Madame´s train should leave.
Goodbye wishes, a real good way to walk the city together this Sunday evening.
Back to the hotel now.
Some minor hassles with the otherwise really good accomodation.
I´ve secured the reservation by Amex, which is shown on the Booking.com website as possible.
Not that long thereafter there was a mail from the hotel in the inbox that Amex is not accepted.
Changed to Master and finally fixed.

Original departure on the local train should be 06.56 am, arrival at Toulon 08.41 am, departure from Toulon 09.02 am and arrival at Hyeres 09.23 am. Plenty of time to reach the airport from Hyeres for a departure around noon. Theory so far on the paper.
The final fare is 20.00 Euro´s, departure from Nice at 06.35 am, by the TGV, which is not on the original time table.
Walking through Nice in the early morning with the usual subjects who, so it seems, spend the whole night there around the station.
Dead or alive?. You never know.

Arrived at Toulon main train station earlier than expected. But there is simply no sign for any train running to Hyeres.
The infodesk confirmed, there is no train running to Hyeres today.
But they offer an subservice by bus. Yes by bus, that´s what I really like. I don´t locate the irony out button here again.
I should walk to the bus terminal, staff is waiting there.
Yes I´am at the bus terminal, but there is no staff to see at all.
The bus terminal infodesk confirmed, there should be a bus subservice, but they also don´t know more.
Two young guys walking around, SNCF badges on the coats, doing some hectic phone calls.
"Yes, we are also looking for the bus subservice and the bus goes tech, so it seems, on the way".
Waiting and more waiting, till a really oldfashioned local example arrives. It seems they hired it on very short notice with the female driver doing here usual break during this time.
It needs ages on that bus for Hyeres, finally I´am running a little bit late, no, I´am running really late, when I´ve noticed that it´s now around 11.00 am, one and a half hour later than the original printed arrival time.
I do not know how far it really is to walk, so I´ve decided to take a cab.
Well, you know, taking a cab when the train is on strike is also not me and only with this idea.
No cab at the station, the pinned numbers helps, but I should wait for some more 30 minutes till a car is available.
Driving down to the airport fast, I don´t really want to remember the fare, but it was far from cheap.
Finally at the airport at around 11.30 am. One hour prior to departure. Thanx god, enough time for a couple of pictures.

Service AF 7503 operated by Air France
Scheduled: 12.30 // 13.55

Welcome to my new addition to the departure airports log.
Well, this is the Cote de Azur and this is also exactly the view a couple of meters to walk only from the terminal building.
Needless to say that´s something what I really like

Ok, not really, but it represents the situation here well.
Toulon is the main base for the french marine and is widely military used

Not that I really want to go to Paris-Orly, no way!.
In fact I´ve had a strange experience during booking this leg.
When you check the german Air France website, there is simply no Toulon on the list of departure airports available. It seems there is no need for Germans to book a flight out of TLN to ORY, the one and only AF destination
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/F1103/F1103122.jpg
The reservation is finally fixed with Flugladen.de. The company has a short living no credit card fee offer and was this way cheaper than the other offers. The fare this way 60.00 Euro´s.
Seat selection was done online by mobile and finally printed the boarding pass at the airport.
25A for the first leg of the day.
Close to no time to wait at security with the majority of the other pax still in the gate area.
Gate 1, what a surprise. No lounge here in TLN

This is F-GRHX, the scheduled A319.
Leg no. 70 on type and yes, this is a new registration for me. In service with AF since 26.06.2001. One of 43 in the fleet

Thanx again to Madame Concorde/Marie, nice company and warm welcomed local help with the trains on strike.

No complaints about the three new CR-K´s, sure a nice plane to fly on. And mostly nice staff, especially on AF mainline, oh lala!.

Some three weeks to go now for the next flights.
More MD´s please, for Genoa and three new lounges to check.

Merci, it´s close to new year´s eve, all the best for 2012 and comments welcome,

Hi Markus,

very nice report about intra-france flying.
Nice is a very nice city for a short break and Toulon airport looks really special.
The service on AF doesnt look bad and I really like their cookies.
Also thanks for the destination pictures.

Those CRK's are huge.

Toulon Airport looked beautiful. It always amazes me that those small French airports with only a very flights a day have very modern facilities and even jetbridges. Speaking of small French airports, Ever been to PUF, Pau-Pyrenees airport? Set in a beatiful area, Pau is a cute little city, and the approach with the Pyrenees in the near distance is rather nice.

Nice is a great place, I've been there a couple of times when I was a kid. I'm planning a litte trip there myself this spring. Did you like the hotel you stayed in? Can you recommend it?

Hi Markus,

A much more interesting way to end the year than my last flights, BA domestics to/from Edinburgh.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The lounge fits in between.
It´s nothing special, no views to the apron

- Already not keen on this lounge then.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
so mainly the place to restock my bag with something to drink and a number of snacks

- Even lounges without views have a use!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
F-HMLD, leg no. 5 on type.

- That's quite an impressive number of CRK flights already, well done!

Looking forward to seeing what's planned for next year.

Cheers

Totally agree, very nice.

Nice to see some pictures from TLN, where I landed once as a diversion from LTT.

Hi Markus,
Another great trip report and well done catching so many segments on the CRJ-1000! I've only logged the CRJ-200 until now so plenty of work to do for me.

Also good job catching another new departure airport in the area and impressive to see such a small airport having jetways (nothing such in Finland at smaller airports).

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Toulon, a couple of CR-K´s and a nice meeting

Now that's what I call a clever title!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Now, that´s what I call a lazy early afternoon departure.

Hmm, you better not get used to these kind of departure times!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Blue air to Constanta sounds also interesting but no, I´ll stick with AF to LYS, no further info here

Blue Air sounds a bit too exotic, known for schedule changes and last minute cancellations! Many interesting carriers have a name beginning with "blu": Blue Air, blu-express (coming up soon for me) and Blue1.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Interesting equipment here to see

Air Mediterranée, an interesting charter carrier for sure, spotted in Lapland last year (unfortunately not this year - only XL Airways and Thomson this time).

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Welcome to the Cote de Azur

Wow, some really nice views there!

May I ask how much you paid for this nice little room?

Hi Markus,

Really enjoyed this nice report (no pun intended!). Lots of lovely photos: particularly the approaches into NCE and SXB plus of course all those lovely shots taken on your evening stroll through Nice. A night time walk along the beach, sand underfoot, haven't done that for a while.

The special gold livery on Britair looks great, very Christmassy.

No, not that I´ve even noticed it before, that there is a high level strike culture

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
followed by super heavy brakes to catch one of the high speed exits.

It is less thrilling than super heavy brakes because of very short runway.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
Longish birds here parked side by side

Which one is the most beautiful?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
A middle aged nice female FA at the planes door and she agreed with me, that it´s not ok to leave seat 1A all alone on this service. Two for me here.

Not once, but twice! Well done, Markus!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
Now that´s a really sunny welcome to Nice

Looking through the window, raining outside, I miss the sun.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
No cars allowed here

Way to go!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
In the old town

It somehow reminds me of Córdoba.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
Hey, show me you´re other side!

Oh yes, please do!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
Surrealistic, isn´t it?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 2):
Well, this is the Cote de Azur and this is also exactly the view a couple of meters to walk only from the terminal building

Paphos has similar surrounding, but Hyeres is much better!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 2):
When you check the german Air France website, there is simply no Toulon on the list of departure airports available.

Strange.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 2):
one very nice and good looking, short black hair, oh lala!.

Somehow I can see your expression while saying, “oh la la!”

Very nice report. What a series of cheering pictures with sunrays. You were blessed to secure three CR-K’s. Pity though about the inconvenience due to the cancelled TGV ride.

I wish the very best for The New Year 2012 and a lot of joy and inspirations.

Hi Markus,

Good to see another one of your blasts from the past. Those sunny pictures from the Cote sure look nice during these dark (and snowless!) winter days.

Quite impressive that you're managed to fit three rare CRKs into one trip, France definitely is the place to go for the type. Nice to read on that ORY-SXB hop, that one will most probably become my maiden voyage on the CRK in May.

Nice looks very nice. Yes, pun intended.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Now, that´s what I call a lazy early afternoon departure.

Are you feeling okay? This is not like you at all - I'm sure there would've been a nice 6.50 departure which has you waking up at 2.30 for the drive...

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Blue air to Constanta sounds also interesting but no, I´ll stick with AF to LYS, no further info here

Well, I don't exactly have very fond memories of that company...

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
It´s nothing special, no views to the apron, so mainly the place to restock my bag with something to drink and a number of snacks

Markus, everybody does that but you're not supposed to admit it!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Looks nice with the original Brit Air colours

Indeed much nicer than the boring AF ones.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
She rebooked me to an earlier train which should be ok.

Well done - sometimes you just can't beat local insight (and language skills!). Very nice that you could hook up.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Lot´s of people around to enjoy the warm afternoon

Looks nice, somehow I've always thought Nice to be just the beach promenade plus tons of high brow, expensive hotels, restaurants and shops for the jet set, but your pictures tell a completely different story. Maybe I should pay a proper visit (flew through the airport back in March, but that's it).

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Surrealistic, isn´t it?

Hmm, did they steal these buddhas from the SAS lounges at OSL and ARN?! I think there might be one at HEL as well.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
How to connect the TGV

Cute, kissing trains.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Driving down to the airport fast, I don´t really want to remember the fare, but it was far from cheap.

...but probably still cheaper than taking a taxi all the way from Toulon? Still very bad organization from SNCF, but it's France after all so what do you really expect?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Well, this is the Cote de Azur and this is also exactly the view a couple of meters to walk only from the terminal building.

Wow, that's a very nice location for an airport. Like a mini St. Maarten with extremely limited traffic.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Not that I really want to go to Paris-Orly, no way!.

Hah, reminds me of most Finnish regional airports - the only destination on the boards is HEL  .

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Blue everywhere, I like it this way

Very nice shots of your departure.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
One nice male, three females, two ok, one very nice and good looking, short black hair, oh lala!.

Markus at it again.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Ever seen an aircraft carrier from above?. Here it is

Great shot, love it!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Something more to do for me next year, definitely

Good luck, their fares seem to be quite obscene though. But I've heard only positive things about Corsica.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The Strassburger Münster in the middle of these picture

What kind of monster is that?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
More MD´s please, for Genoa and three new lounges to check.

Plus some upgrades.

Hello Markus,

Very nice to follow your latest story to the Med. I'm glad for you to have finally arranged this a.net meet there and Nice is actually a pleasant (yet posh) city to roam around. And it's even better with local company!
3 CRK's in 1 trip and all new reg's, that's a nice achievement. It seems Air France has quite a sizeable amount of them in operation. It's a good looking, sleek and modern airplane. A bit too bad underwing shots are quite difficult, no?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Nice Brit Air colours

Yes, this one looks very good indeed.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
This is maghreb territory

Interesting. Is that a 'special' corner ar ORY? I wonder what that carrier is with the lightblue tail. Any idea?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Well that´s the maximum change from the last row F to the first row A!.

Huh, no fan anymore of the window last row?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Merci, it´s close to new year´s eve, all the best for 2012

The same goes for you Markus!

Sure the CR-K is not the plane for the underwing shots, we will see how I´am going to manage it!.

Air Algerie/RAM and Aigle Azur, french based, but running to the Maghreb states mostly.

Nice trip report, thanks for sharing it with us! Those CRK's sure look nice, comfortable and large  ! I found the CR9 to be large last week  . Nice to see pics of the Cote D'azur en the provence, reminds me of my rail-trip last summer troughout France. Had a similar bus situation in France in june as well. Glad you made your flight to ORY.
