So it was time to leave Istanbul and my friend to fly back to Athens. For my return I decided to choose Olympic Air. The price was right and so was the schedule.

Olympic Air is celebrating two years of service since being set up by MIG as a private company. They have done a good job with the Olympic brand despite a worsening home economy. They have had to drop some routes and concentrate on Greek Domestic and Balkan routes. This decision seems to have been a good one and they still have a good and decent product.

I spent the last day with my friend shopping and having some nice food.   Here are some photos of one of my favourite cities.

I always love shopping here and getting some bargains. After this it was time to eat so my friend and
I decided to eat where the shop keepers eat . Always guranteed a good meal at a crazy cheap price.

My favourite kind of meal and tasted so good. The owner came out and was talking to us my friend
was translating.

DATE: 13/DEC/2011
AIRLINE : OLYMPIC AIR
FLIGHT: OA 320
ROUTE: ISTANBUL - ATHENS
AIRCRAFT: AIRBUS A319
CLASS: ECONOMY
REG: SX - OAF
SEAT: 23F

I was quite early and already had checked in online so rather than wait to check in to open to
get a proper boarding card I decided to go to the lounge instead.

OLCI process :

I had been pre assigned 4A maybe due to my FF status but I moved to 23F .

This lounge looks nice but sadly not the one I have access to .

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-98.jpg

A roped off area outside is the temporary lounge whilst the other one is being refurbished.
Although lacking in some things the food offerings were surprisingly good. The only thing
that was dissapointing is that the free wifi was broken.

Soon it was time to leave the lounge and head to the gate spotting an MEA on the way :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-114.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-115.jpg

I arrived at the security check point and handed in my boarding pass and passport. The
security agent said to me ''Do you need a visa for Greece ? '' I looked at her in disbelief .
''With a British passport ? Its EU we dont need visas for anywhere in the EU ''. I kind of was
a bit taken aback with this how weird. Am I the only UK passport holder to travel between
Greece and Turkey. Anyway she looked at me and handed the documents back and I walked
on to the seating area. Looking at the demography of the lounge it was 80% Greeks and 20%
Turks.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-116.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-117.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-120.jpg

Soon it was time to board the aircraft and I was first in line. The gate agent looked at my boarding
pass and passport and said to me ''please can you wait , I need to check if you need a visa.''

Ok this really annoyed me so I replied '' No you dont need to check anything British passport holders
are not required to have visas for another EU country you should really know these things ! '' After I
said it I kind of felt bad for seeming rude but I was tired and wanted to get seated. She looked at me and
knew I wasnt impressed and proceeded to invite me to board.

I made my way down the air bridge and was greeted by two friendly FA's. When I got to my seat I noticed
that my row which should have been the last one was not there ! I guess a aircraft change with one less
row. I decided to sit in the last row anyway and see how full the flight would be.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-126.jpg

The one thing I did notice was the massive amount of legroom .

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-128.jpg

Legroom demo :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-134.jpg

Soon after a while the flight was nearly boarded and a lady came down to sit where I had sat down.
The FA came and asked me to hold on for a minute while she sorted out the seating issue.
I got up and let the lady sit down and shortly the FA came and said we have re seated you in
an aisle at the front . I was a bit annoyed at first mainly because I always like the last row window
and also I was very tired. I think the FA sensed this and asked me if I needed help with my
bags. I declined and made my way to the new seat. As it was a night time flight I would not be taking
pictures outside anyway so didnt make a fuss.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-135.jpg

View from my new seat . A group of noisey school kids had boarded at the front which didnt fill me with
smiles but I guess we were all school kids once lol..   One kid walked past his seat and the other kid
shouted out where are you going George . One of the FA's shouted out also ''Yes where are you
going George'' to receive a few laughs.

The crew I have to say were good humoured.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-136.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-137.jpg

Soon the doors were closed and the crew handed out sweets. A nice touch on OA and A3.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-141.jpg

Soon we made our way to the runway and took off. Not long after the crew commenced the
drinks and food service.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/OA1/file-142.jpg

The FA stopped at my seat and handed me my meal tray. She was the same one who
asked me to move. To my surprise she said to me '' Im sorry but that was a bad experience
for you , what can I get you to drink ? '' I was touched by her acknowledgement and smiled
and asked for orange juice. She also asked if I would like coffee to which I accepted.

Soon it was time to land into ATH the crew prepared the cabin ready for landing. All
the kids clapped on landing which was in true OA style a very smooth one

I disembarked the aircraft thanking the crew and made my way past reclaim. No bags for me
to collect.

So thats the end of my report. Olympic provided me with good value for money and an on time
flight. The seat issue was resolved quickly and the FA made the effort to appologise which made
a difference. I couldnt fault the crew who were smiles all the way and interacted with the passengers.

The load was 100% Full in C and 100% Full in Y not bad at all.

The catering was great for a 55mins flight and the cabin interior was clean and comfortable.

Hopefully 2012 will be a good year for Olympic as they still offer a good product.

Thanks for reading and I trust you all had a good Christmas and I wish you Happy New Year 2012

I look forward to your comments as usual.

Regards

Philip / OA260

Hey Phil, excellent TR as usual. Not surprised to hear about the good product of OA. I have never flown with them (in their new form) on an international route but from what I read they seem to be consistently great. The amount of food seams very appropriate (or in fact generous given the duration of the flight). I love how both OA and A3 give you sweets during boarding. Even though both companies offer sweets of many different potential flavors, I must confess that I prefer A3's simply because there is a good chance I'll get an anise-seed flavored one... which OA doesn't seem to offer.

It is very weird indeed that staff at IST thought you may need a visa to enter Greece. How on earth did they come up with that? It reminds me of that one time I got a stamp at FCO, even though I was using a EU passport. Sometimes people get confused.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Looking forward to read about your exciting upcoming trips.

Thanks for the reply yes the feedback seems to be more positive than the old OA and winning awards within the first two years is a nice recognition for the hard work done by the new owners.

route and plenty for the time.

You would think they would be familiar with EU passports and regulations
thats why I reacted that way .

Thanks yes OA offer a very nice catering for such a short duration. The filling
IIRC was one salad and one cheese which were very tasty.

Hi Philip,

First of all, best wishes for The New Year 2012.

Wow, you are just amazing with this trip report about OA!
You pointed out OA’s decision to only serve the region for the continuity of the company, reminded us how OA was started in 2009 and showed how wise the decision turned out to be by highlighting the consistently top-notch on-board service until in the tiny details on a 55 minute flight. Being seated with masses of legroom and enjoying your lovely meal served by well-groomed, compassionate and caring flight attendants.
You are a truly ambassador of OA!

Your pictures of Istanbul bring back the nice memory of visiting the city myself in 2010. (Gosh, has it been that long already?) Sultan Ahmet, Grand Bazaar, Iskander kebab,….

Quoting OA260 (Reply 2):
The
security agent said to me ''Do you need a visa for Greece ? '' I looked at her in disbelief .
''With a British passport ? Its EU we dont need visas for anywhere in the EU ''
Quoting OA260 (Reply 2):
The gate agent looked at my boarding
pass and passport and said to me ''please can you wait , I need to check if you need a visa.''

Ok this really annoyed me so I replied '' No you dont need to check anything British passport holders
are not required to have visas for another EU country you should really know these things ! ''

This misunderstanding should have not happened. Pity about the agent’s ignorance.

Thank you for sharing another wonderful experience on the first day of the year.

I know it is long past midnight already, but cheers,

Hi Philip,

Nice report, thanks for posting.

Great pictures from IST, looking forward to visiting the city myself in a few months time.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):

Ok this really annoyed me so I replied '' No you dont need to check anything British passport holders

said it I kind of felt bad for seeming rude but I was tired and wanted to get seated. She looked at me and
knew I wasnt impressed and proceeded to invite me to board.

- Surely this is basic information and quite obvious?

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Soon after a while the flight was nearly boarded and a lady came down to sit where I had sat down.
The FA came and asked me to hold on for a minute while she sorted out the seating issue.
I got up and let the lady sit down and shortly the FA came and said we have re seated you in
an aisle at the front . I was a bit annoyed at first mainly because I always like the last row window

- What happened to your original seat, 23F?

Cheers

Hi Philip,
thanks for a really nice read spiced with some good photos too!

Despite the small issues related to your visa and the missing seat row I can understand why Olympic Air was chosen airline of the year of 2010 having read this trip report - and very impressive catering on such a short 55-minute flight!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
The price was right

May I ask how much you paid for the flight?

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
My favourite kind of meal and tasted so good. The owner came out and was talking to us my friend
was translating.

I don't know what it is but it definitely looks absolutely delicious!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
After a while it was time to arrive at IST .

Talking about those Turkish Airlines' "Globally yours" ads - they definitely are very global. During a spotting trip to RVN in Lapland (featured in my latest TR) I saw some TK ads there - even though I am pretty sure a Turkish Airlines aircraft has never (and probably will never) land there. Quite interesting actually.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
I had been pre assigned 4A maybe due to my FF status but I moved to 23F .

I can see your ticket number on the right of your boarding pass...
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Thanks for reading and I trust you all had a good Christmas and I wish you Happy New Year 2012

The very same to you too, Philip!

Glad to see your reports up again on this New Year Day.

OA seems to perform great service on this route, I guess competition is pretty tough on here with TK, so this meal serving in Y for such a short sector is really amazing.

The incident with a British passport is quite hilarious, I am sure some British would like to have a UK out of the EU, so this is just in preparation just in case they abandon the continent to its own luck

Needless to say pictures of IST are great to see, are you getting any money from the Istanbul Tourist Board?

All the best in the just started year and my best wishes from YYC. A trip report to follow with an incredible experience on IB J MAD-LAX, quite surprising, you'll see.

Hi Phil,

Another great read in your traditional style. I guess this one and the previous SQ one serves as an appetizer while we wait for the main course - a report on your Big Trip (TM) of 2011  .

Nice shots of Istanbul, I bet you get a lot more out of it with a local guide than as a tourist. I've been there a couple of times but never had a proper visit, should probably do that some time.

I'm surprised it's already been two years since the rebirth of OA, I guess that only goes to show how time flies! I'm glad they've managed to reinvent themselves and seem to be doing okayish despite the problems in Greece and elsewhere. I was really surprised by their announcement on the resumption of flights to AMS, that seemed to be completely against their "Greece and nearby only" strategy, but I guess that hook up with KLM described in the inflight magazine sort of explains that. I guess they will be codesharing to the US (and definitely to YYZ considering the number of Greek living in Ontario!).

Quite generous inflight service for such a short hop!

PS. Congratulations on posting the first trip report of 2012! My first flights of the year are still a couple of weeks away.

Excellent pictured report featuring my favorite European/Asian city: Istanbul. Your photos from it very much reminded me of the few excellent days I spent there some years ago.
A nice experience on OA as well, too bad about the small VISA incident but glad that was quickly solved! OA perfoming solid here with a substantial food presentation and cheerful F/A's. Would love to try them someday but a pity that's not possible from BRU...

Hi Philip

Thanks for the interesting report, I can really sympathise when you say Istanbul is one of your favourite cities. The first time I went there I was 16, it was the first trip my parents allowed me to travel on my own and it was love at first sight. The opulence of the Top Kapi and the gracious lines of the Blue Mosque took my breath away.

Olympic doesn't look half bad actually. It seems to me that they're still struggling to overcome the rather bad reputation they had many years ago. But I'm impressed by the way the flight attendant dealt with reseating you by acknowledging that you were not amused. Sounds quite professional to me at least.

Cheers,

The problem with the old state run company was you either had a great flight ( of which I had many on the B747/A300's and A340's ) or it was a disaster. There was no consistency.

Lucky with the new company most people seem to know now that Olympic Air is a new company nothing to do with the old government controlled airline. Even looking at the online reviews which used to give 70% mid range to bad reviews reflect this these days. Its nice to know MIG and OA are winning the battle .

Some recent reviews can be seen here :

Indeed nice for OA and a good partnership for KLM as a feeder to AMS. I hope it works well for both airlines.

OA will increase ATH-AMS from 9 weekly to 14 weekly. Also they will increase flights to OTP and CAI . Good to see

Just looked and KLM now offer DUB-AMS ( EI ) then AMS-ATH ( OA ) All on KLM flight numbers for EUR350 all in return ! Something to maybe try for me. I wonder what baggage rules apply though with a KLM Gold card. If you are on a KLM ticket and codeshare is it treated like KLM so you get 23KG extra ? Also what about lounge access?

Soon it was time to leave and make our way back to Taksim via tram and tunnel.

Thanks for bringing back very nice memories of my trip to Istanbul, I did exactly the same route (bazar-tram-tunnel), it was a great day and all your pictures look very familiar to me.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Ok this really annoyed me so I replied '' No you dont need to check anything British passport holders
are not required to have visas for another EU country you should really know these things ! '' After I
said it I kind of felt bad for seeming rude but I was tired and wanted to get seated. She looked at me and
knew I wasnt impressed and proceeded to invite me to board.

This is annoying, you wold expect that people working at this positions should know these things.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
The FA stopped at my seat and handed me my meal tray. She was the same one who
asked me to move. To my surprise she said to me '' Im sorry but that was a bad experience
for you , what can I get you to drink ? '' I was touched by her acknowledgement and smiled
and asked for orange juice. She also asked if I would like coffee to which I accepted.

Nice by the FA, but did they tell you why you had to move? Did you have the same seat on the BP? I don't think I would give up my window seat just like that, but if they would have a good enough reason I probably would

Regards,
Blaž

Good Man   The only way to go . Look forward to that one eagerly.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 32):
- Yes, looking forward to it, only been spotting in IST before. I've a list of idea's and a local contact of my sister in law has sent us a whole list of the best places to eat/drink etc, can't wait!

Thats good you should get some good metal there. In another TR a member went to a viewing place on the top floor of a aviation building or college IIRC try to get there

Hi Robert ,

Quoting Parton87 (Reply 33):
I guess they must have been affected by the financial situation in Greece!?

Indeed they have launched at a time when its not the best but this might hold them in good stead as they really have to work hard to make it !

Thanks also for the nice pictures from Istanbul. It looks like a great city! I´m planning going there this year.

Welcome you will love it . So much to do and see .

Quoting LH4532 (Reply 34):
Great to see another TR about OA . They sure have done a great job . Good to know they are getting better and better . You have great pictures of Istanbul . It makes me want to visit the city . Hope all is well .

Thanks Daniel . Yes the product is good and they seem to have found their place in the Greek market so better to stay small and do what they do best rather than having grand notions !

Hello Hannah ( AKA Mrs M&S ) lol...

Quoting infodesk (Reply 35):
Judging by your photos of the Grand Bazaar, I don't think you should let me loose in there!

I know its a place I can spend hours in just soaking up the culture or spending money
Quoting infodesk (Reply 35):
IST aren't that much of a rarity?

I know thousands of Brits pass though weekly.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 35):
Still, the FA acknowledged the inconvenience afterwards, so that's something. The catering looks very good for such a short hop - bet the crew had their work cut out with a full load.

Yes it just goes to show one person can really make a difference and truly represent their airline.

Hi Blaž,

Yeah its the usual tourist trail

I was officially in 23F but the last row was 22F so I was in fact in the wrong seat but there was no 23F for me to move to so I was hoping that the check in had blocked off 22F for me but HAVAS handling agents had not .

hop on the HAVAS Bus to the Airport

You didn't want to take the metro to the airport?   Personally I prefer rail to bus if at all possible, even though it would need a change.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 2):

Looks good for a Y flight on a short sector!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 2):

And the agreement/partnership with KLM

Does this mean that Olympic may soon join Skytem?

Thanks again!

No I took it last time and its two trains and I was walking towards the direction of Taksim anyway . So one direct bus was better .

No plans for any alliance at the moment from what I hear.

hey Phillip,

Since Turkish plans to open Kigali route, we are thinking about a short stay over there, so this is a mouthwatering overview that you've posted here thank you. Where do you advise to stay? and the hidden gems?

Olympic product looks decent, and the ad as the begin showed the truth, F/As are as pretty in reality than on the paper

Forgive my ignorance but, in which terms they won the title of "Airline of the year 2010/2011"?

Again many thanks for the brilliant report

It was a Silver award for product and service. Only 12 months into operation it wasnt too bad .
