Prelude
Happy New Year to you all!

In 2011 I did quite a bit of travelling. In the final quarter though, 'things' started happening. In October I was scheduled to go to London three times in three consecutive weeks, with a meeting at ICAO HQ in Montreal thrown in between. Then the meeting was cancelled and I ended up with a whole bunch of crossed tickets which were suddenly useless and needed rebooking. On one of those flights I experienced BMI's interpretation of Business Class speed dining, the trip report for which can be found here:
Speed Dining With BMI (by knightsofmalta Oct 26 2011 in Trip Reports)

Then in November I decided to go to Edinburgh for the weekend. The return was with an A 319 which had only just come out of maintenance to have Lufthansa's new 'Eurokabine' installed. I even got an upgrade to Business on the return - the flight was packed - only to witness the flight attendant pop the cork off a bottle of champagne and shoot a hole into the ceiling of the newly refurbished cabin. That report can be found here:
Lufthansa And A Hole In The Ceiling With Champagne (by knightsofmalta Nov 14 2011 in Trip Reports)

In November I had to travel to Lisbon to give a course. First I came down with a bad cold two days before I was scheduled to fly, next my flight to Amsterdam was supposedly delayed due to some persistent fog there and finally there was a general strike in Portugal on the day I was scheduled to return. That report can be found here:
KLM, TAP, A Lot Of Fog And The Greve Geral (by knightsofmalta Nov 25 2011 in Trip Reports)

Then December saw me heading to Stockholm. As it happened, the weather was really bad on the day I should have been travelling from Zurich, with heavy rain, gusty wind and subsequently many delays and cancellations. Of course my flight was cancelled too and I ended up heading from Zurich to Stockholm via a detour to Oslo. Still I can't complain as I got to Stockholm on the same day. I did not write a report on that trip.

Needless to say, apart from the incidents mentioned here, I did a few more trips during the final quarter of 2011 which all went without a hitch. Even so, by the time my last trip for this year came up, I found myself wondering what could possibly go wrong next?

This report covers a trip from Basel to Copenhagen in Business Class and then from Copenhagen with Blue1 to Oulu and back in Economy Plus, or whatever they call it. I should have returned from Copenhagen to Basel again on Swiss in Business Class on 31 December. But then a month before departure I suddenly noticed that the return flight from Copenhagen to Basel had gone missing from my online profile. I called Swiss to find out what was going on, only to be told that they had decided to cancel the flight due to the low number of bookings for the flight. I really wonder when they were planning to inform me at Swiss, or if they possibly thought they'd just wait and see if I turned up.

First I was rebooked onto a Swiss flight to Zurich, which did not suit me at all as it meant taking the train back to Basel, where I would not arrive until gone midnight. So eventually after some protestations I was put on a flight to Basel via Frankfurt with Lufthansa.

So here's the routing:

As for my motivation to do this trip, all I wanted was to fly the B. 717 and try out Blue1. Sounds like a good enough reason to me! So here we go:

Date: 26. December 2011
From: BSL
To: OUL
Airline: LX
Aircraft: RJ100
Seat: 1D
Departure: 15h00
Arrival: 16:35

After celebrating Christmas with the family at my parents place, I left Basel for Copenhagen in the afternoon of 26 December. First stop was the main railway station to get some Danish Krona and then catch the bus from just outside the main entrance. It being the day after Christmas, I was not really expecting there to be any people. Much to my surprise though, the bus was full and the airport was also rather busy when I arrived.

Here's the main hall of the station with the ticketing machines and counters. There's also a Bureau de Change.

Here's the bus to the airport.

At the airport I went straight through security and headed for the Swiss Business Class lounge, which was nearly deserted. This however, had nothing to do with the Christmas holiday and seems to be the usual state of affairs for this lovely lounge. As you can see it looked wonderful with the light of the winter sun seeping in through the windows in the roof.

When I arrived at the gate for boarding, the flight looked pretty full. As it turned out, there was only one row of Business Class and the rest of the aircraft looked fully booked with Economy Class passengers. Apart from me there was another passenger in Business Class. He was on the window of the row of three and I was on the aisle. I figured I could move across to the window on the other side once boarding was completed.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Basel_Copenhagen_2011/P1020134.jpg

In the row behind me there was a family with two young children sharing the row of three. The flight attendant informed them that they needed to be reseated as there were no additional oxygen masks on the row of three, therefore one parent would have to sit on the other side of the aisle with one of the children. So the guy in the aisle seat on the row of two got up to change seats with the dad, but instead of swapping seats, he just parked himself in the empty two-seater of the Business Class cabin. What's more, the flight attendant let him stay there for the entire flight. It's these little things that really crack me up about Swiss. I mean, I know I'm always nagging about SWISS, but is it really too much to ask for them to do things properly?

In any case, it was a lovely day for flying, Our Jumbolino was obviously struggling with the heavy load, subsequently our climb was not exactly steep. We took off in a southerly direction, then did a 270 degree right hand turn and crossed the Rhine river into German airspace. We then flew an easterly track to lake Contance, on the German-Swiss boarder, and from there changed course to head in a northerly direction across Germany.

The lunch that was served was rather strange and consisted of shredded Zucchini with a slice of poached salmon and some Bündnerfleisch. It also seems that since my previous trip in Business Class, Swiss has reverted to using plastic dishes and cutlery.

The rest of the flight was uneventful, there are no pictures of our arrival in Copenhagen as it was already dark by then.

The next day saw me back at Kastrup bright and early for my flight to Helsinki.

Date: 27. December 2011
From: Copenhagen
To: Helsinki
Airline: Blue1
Aircraft: B. 717
Seat: 1F
Departure: 08h05
Arrival: 10:30

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Basel_Copenhagen_2011/blue1_logo.png

Copenhagen was very busy when I arrived, judging by the queues it looked as though all of Denmark had elected to travel by air that morning!
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020145.jpg

Fortunately I was able to to OLCI the previous day before I left Basel. In Copenhagen SAS has a dedicated Fast Track for passengers travelling in Business Class on SAS or with Eurobonus gold status. Fortunately Economy Extra passengers on Blue1 may also avail themselves of the fast track.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020146.jpg

There are two exists from security, one leads you into a duty free shop while the other drops you off right outside the SAS lounges.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020148.jpg

There are two lounges within one facility. The SAS lounge for Business Class passengers is located on the ground floor, while to upper floor is the Scandinavia lounge for all STAR Gold passengers. The lounge was rather peaceful. Not really quite sure on what to expect catering-wise on KF, I decided to have breakfast in the lounge.

Eventually the excitement of my flight on a B. 717 got the better of me and I head off to the departure gate to catch a first glimpse of my ride to Helsinki.

Et voilà!

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020159.jpg

It's such a lovely livery.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020160.jpg

My first impressions of the cabin were good, although the carpets looked rather worn and filthy. Of the three flights with a Bue1 B: 717 I did on this trip, none were identical. This aircraft has a bulkhead covered in blue leather and had two lavatories at the back but none in front.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020180.jpg

We took off into a murky looking Copenhagen sky, very soon though we were through the clouds and in a lovely subdued sunshine.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020179.jpg

Service started with a round of water or orange juice served on the ground. there were eight rows of Economy Extra for only five passengers in this cabin, which made for a very pleasant and quiet flight.

Once we were airborne, breakfast was served, which came with nicely warmed bread. the crew did a number of coffee and juice rounds throughout the flight.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020183.jpg

Soon we started our descent, which was a very bumpy affair, it was really hard trying to take a decent picture.

Operated by: Golden Air
Aircraft: ATR72
Seat: 18A
Departure: 11h30
Arrival: 12:40

From the departure gate we were bussed to our aircraft, which was parked in a part of the airport that really gave justice to the term 'remote stand'. The load on this flight must have been 100% or close to that. There were two rows of Economy Extra. As the ATR has the door at the rear, the premium section if also located in the rear section of the cabin. Waiting to board the aircraft gave me some nice photo opportunities.

Seating was rather tight, but quite okay for such a short flight. The cabin was clean and welcoming.

On this flight, lunch was served, which consisted of a chicken breast on salad leaves with some sort of potato salad. Every tray came with a bottle of wine on it (in a plastic bottle, I decided not to try it...). The food, as all the meals I had on Blue1 actually, was rather tasty and the chicken was not at all dry.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/P1020204.jpg

Landing in Oulu was pretty rough and there seemed to be a blizzard passing through as we started our approach. Still the sturdy ATR72 kept on going, seemingly unperturbed by the rough flying conditions. My greatest respect to the cockpit crew's airmanship skills! As we landed there was snow sweeping across the airfield and the runway and the snow ploughs were evidently having a hard time keeping the apron and runway clear of any snow. I had finally arrived in Oulu and clocked the B. 717, Blue1 and Golden Air. I was also freezing my nuts off!

I did not take that many pictures of the return trip to Copenhagen, but here are a few more images of the lounge in Helsinki I took on the return and the food on the Helsinki-Copenhagen leg. It was too early for me to take any pictures on the Oulu-Helsinki leg.

If you made it this far, thanks for sticking around. This is the last part of the report.
Date: 31. December 2011
From: Copenhagen
To: Frankfurt
Airline: Lufthansa
Aircraft: B. 737-300
Seat: 1F
Departure: 16h40
Arrival: 17:45

At around noon I checked out of the hotel and decided to head straight for the airport. It was cold and the Tivoli closes for the winter on 30. December. The shops did not seem to be open either. Copenhagen's main railway station is right across the road from the entrance to the Tivoli.

Danish trains are rather comfy and well maintained, but lord they're so ugly to look at from the outside!

The railway station and platforms at Kastrup are located one floor down from the terminal and are easily accessed.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020313.jpg

Once I arrived I headed for one of the selfservice kiosk. For some reason I was printed my boarding pass for the flight from Frankfurt to Basel but not the one from Copenhagen to Frankfurt. When I tried a second time a message appeared on the screen telling me I would need to contact Lufthansa when I got Frankfurt, which seemed somewhat difficult to achieve without a boarding pass to get to Frankfurt. So I headed to one of the counters for check-in, where I received my boarding pass with no difficulty at all.

The uncooperative check-in kiosk.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020316.jpg

I then proceeded to security. As I was travelling on Lufthansa, this meant passing through security like a normal mortal. The queue was something nasty and it took me about 20 minutes to reach the actual security check.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020318.jpg

Yes, I know...patience...
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020317.jpg

Surprisingly though, once I arrived airside, the terminal appeared to be nearly deserted. I really like Copenhagen airport. It just looked so nice with the low winter sun seeping in through the windows.

At around 16h00 I headed towards the departure gate. By this time the airport was nearly deserted and most of the shops were closing or had already closed. Note the absence of humans in the following pictures. The first few pictures are from the long corridor leading to Copenhagen's low-cost terminal.

Here's my ride to Frankfurt. The load was not too hot on our flight either. There were three of us in Business and about 50 in Economy.

Surprisingly, the aircraft was equipped with the new Eurokabine. I was under the impression that Lufthansa was getting rid of its Boeing narrow-bodies, so I didn't think they would bother to refit them. In any case, those seats are just so thin!

The meal service was typically German fare, with loads of wurst and speck, both of which are not top of the list of my favourite foods. At least the starter was good. It consisted of red snapper in a saffron sauce.

The crew on this short flight was very good and the purser even made sure to address passengers by name, something you don't get very often on short-haul flights these days.

We landed on the new runway in Frankfurt. By this time though it was already dark, making it difficult to get some good shorts. At least we parked on a remote stand!

I travel through Frankfurt quite often and I think I can truly say I have never seen the Senator lounge so empty. We were only about ten people in it and the staff were bored absolutely shitless. One of them complained to me that she'd already wiped every single table at least four times and still had a few more hours to go to the end of her shift!

This years theme at the Tivoli was 'Russian Christmas'. The buildings should resemble the Kremlin in Moskow but admittedly, they have a slightly oriental look about them.

Hi

Nice trip report you have got there, it was nice reading it. Seems like KF did get the sign right on the HEL-OUL segment, unlike in Rasmus's TR. LX and KF seem to have a decent product as well. Thanks for sharing the insight pics of CPH and OUIL as well.

Okay guys, bear with me. We're nearly there.

Date: 31. December 2011
From: Frankfurt
To: Basel
Airline: Lufthansa
Aircraft: CRJ 700
Seat: 4A
Departure: 20h45
Arrival: 21H30

This is the last leg. All in all I counted 30 passengers on this flight, with only two of us in Business Class. We were bussed to our aircraft.

Waiting for the last passenger to board the bus.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020385.jpg

It was rather cold, so I only took this one picture.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020386.jpg

Our neighbor.

I don't really fancy the Canadair Regional Jets as I always find them rather cramped. Still, it's okay when you have the whole front section nearly all to yourself.

Just a word of caution here. Never ever choose seats 1A or 1C on the CRJ. Seats 1D and F are missing, as a result if you're on row 1 it means sitting right next to the loo!

Take-off on this little bugger was pretty powerful with such a light load. With such a short flying time, the cabin crew more or less started with the service as soon as the gear went up. Actually I was quite surprised to get anything at all, even if, again, the main event was wurst.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020391.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020392.jpg

Still, the chocolate made up for the wurst I guess.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020393.jpg

Basel airport, like Copenhagen and Frankfurt, was deserted and I was soon out and on the bus back home.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Copenhagen_Oulu_Copenhagen_2011/Copenhagen_2011/P1020397.jpg

This concludes this report on my last trip of 2011. I hope you enjoyed it. Fortunately there were no major issued or problems with this last trip. Swiss did not manage to change my opinion of them, namely that their product is inconsistent and their flight attendants simply couldn't care less most of the time. Of course there have been exceptions in terms of the quality of the crews. But all in all, I think Swiss has now reached a point where it shows that you get what you pay for. If you pay your crew crap salaries, then crap is what you're going to get.

Blue1 I liked, they're nothing special but they get the job done. The crews are friendly and well, they operate the B. 717. That in itself says it all. As you may know I have a bit of a thing about the MD-80. In comparison perhaps the only difference between the two is that the B. 717 has quieter engines. If you're sitting up front you really don't hear anything at all.

Lufthansa was Lufthansa, reliable and efficient. I never thought I'd say so but I've come to prefer Lufthansa over Swiss recently (except for the wurst perhaps). The new Eurokabine is definitely a major improvement over the previous cabin design and gives the aircraft a very stylish appearance.

So, I wish all my fellow anutters a happy new year and all the very best for 2012, with many safe and fun trips and even better trip reports.

Cheers,
William

Hi Marc

Thanks. I thought that was rather funny with the sign too. Well it is all rather confusing on the ATR I guess.

Hi William!

Great tripreport as usual!
Nice to read about your adventure to Denmark and Finland.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
then from Copenhagen with Blue1 to Oulu and back in Economy Plus, or whatever they call it.

Blue1 Premium.
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
As for my motivation to do this trip, all I wanted was to fly the B. 717 and try out Blue1.

I will probably book a trip soon for the same reason!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
As you can see it looked wonderful with the light of the winter sun seeping in through the windows in the roof.

Great looking lounge.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
It's such a lovely livery.

One of the best ones out there, in my opinion.

Hi William,
Thanks for a superb read - featuring some familiar views of HEL and CPH. Many beautiful pics from Copenhagen too - I never get enough of that city, I guess I should book another trip there soon.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
then from Copenhagen with Blue1 to Oulu and back in Economy Plus, or whatever they call it.

Blue1 Premium.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
I really wonder when they were planning to inform me at Swiss, or if they possibly thought they'd just wait and see if I turned up.

Not very impressive. I can understand a five-minute schedule change is nothing to notify of but the cancellation of a flight is a quite serious matter.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
As for my motivation to do this trip, all I wanted was to fly the B. 717 and try out Blue1.

That sounds like a very good reason to go if you ask me! The B717 is my favourite aircraft type and Blue1 is also my preferred airline so it was nice to read you also had a pretty nice experience with them.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
Date: 26. December 2011
From: BSL
To: OUL

Hmm, I didn't know LX flew to OUL?
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 2):
Fortunately Economy Extra passengers on Blue1 may also avail themselves of the fast track.

The name hasn't changed, it is still Blue1 Premium. Some years ago the class was yet named Economy Extra - nowadays that name is only used on SK flights.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 2):
Eventually the excitement of my flight on a B. 717 got the better of me and I head off to the departure gate to catch a first glimpse of my ride to Helsinki.

Needless to say that the B717 looks absolutely gorgeous in that livery. Great shot BTW!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Everything is SAS branded anyway, so why not just call it SAS Finland?

Well, I see it for a number of reasons. First of all, SAS is Scandinavian Airlines - and Finland isn't a part of Scandinavia. Secondly, Blue1 is competing with AY, DY and others on some routes and therefore it was important for them to profile themselves as an independent Finnish carrier (after all that's what they are!).

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Upon arrival I headed for the SAS lounge, which was right opposite my gate for the connection to Oulu.

Unless HEL was my home airport it would always be my preferred transfer airport. I will never forget some of my relatives flying OUL-HEL-CDG on KF and being anxious about their short connection of 40 minutes. In the end it was the very same aircraft that flew them all the way and all the had to do was to exit the aircraft and enter it again from the very same gate.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 4):
From the departure gate we were bussed to our aircraft, which was parked in a part of the airport that really gave justice to the term 'remote stand'.

Well, that is the commuter apron for you. Actually it is quite a short bus drive away from those bus gates where KF flights usually depart (13A and 14A).

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 4):
The load on this flight must have been 100% or close to that.

Yeah, KF is doing quite good business on the Oulu route. The midday flight used to be B717 but was downgraded to the ATR some time ago and ever since the flight has been full pretty much all the time.
Nice you got SE-MDH, the second KF ATR based in HEL.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 4):
There were two rows of Economy Extra.

Hmm...

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
The food, as all the meals I had on Blue1 actually, was rather tasty and the chicken was not at all dry.

Yeah, they upgraded the Premium offerings on domestic sectors some time ago - earlier you would only have got a sandwich on the HEL-OUL segment.

Quoting MSS658 (Reply 10):
Seems like KF did get the sign right on the HEL-OUL segment, unlike in Rasmus's TR.

Yeah, they got it right - but the sign is still not designed for Premium cabins located in the back of the aircraft as it says "Economy behind this seat row". It should be "in front of".

Regards,
717Flyer

Hi William!

Thanks for this kinda nice picturesque report. So was this trip a kind of Christmas gift for yourself?
I just wonder why it's posted so fragmented? Was it you or some site glitches?
I'm sorry to hear you're not high up with Swiss, I thought they were ranked among the better carriers but you definitely argument against that in your conclusion. Blue1 has surprised me in a positive way as well this year having done a BRU-HEL flight some months ago.
I also agree on CPH: a very nice airport and a joy to connect through. What did you think of HEL and OUL?

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
As for my motivation to do this trip, all I wanted was to fly the B. 717 and try out Blue1. Sounds like a good enough reason to me!

Now that's a reason enough, the B717 is a great plane. Some users even dedicate their nickname to it

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
he just parked himself in the empty two-seater of the Business Class cabin.

So he was in Y and placed himself in C without the cabin crew intervening? Unacceptable...

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Everything is SAS branded anyway, so why not just call it SAS Finland?

Ha, good suggestion!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Not sure what this is for...

I think it prevents the plane from tipping over in case of bad loading?

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
I was also freezing my nuts off!

Poor you... No pics of that?

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
So, I wish all my fellow anutters a happy new year and all the very best for 2012, with many safe and fun trips and even better trip reports.

The same goes for you William, cheers!

Hi William!

Nice end of year report from you!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
I called Swiss to find out what was going on, only to be told that they had decided to cancel the flight due to the low number of bookings for the flight. I really wonder when they were planning to inform me at Swiss, or if they possibly thought they'd just wait and see if I turned up.

Thats really bad. Surely the system should automatically email you when something like this happens. Very poor show from LX

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 2):
Copenhagen was very busy when I arrived, judging by the queues it looked as though all of Denmark had elected to travel by air that morning!

Wow, is that the check in or security queue?

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 2):
Once we were airborne, breakfast was served, which came with nicely warmed bread. the crew did a number of coffee and juice rounds throughout the flight.

That looks are more economy that business

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
On this flight, lunch was served, which consisted of a chicken breast on salad leaves with some sort of potato salad. Every tray came with a bottle of wine on it (in a plastic bottle, I decided not to try it...). The food, as all the meals I had on Blue1 actually, was rather tasty and the chicken was not at all dry.

That looks quite tasty, and the salmon blinis - yum!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Once I arrived I headed for one of the selfservice kiosk. For some reason I was printed my boarding pass for the flight from Frankfurt to Basel but not the one from Copenhagen to Frankfurt. When I tried a second time a message appeared on the screen telling me I would need to contact Lufthansa when I got Frankfurt, which seemed somewhat difficult to achieve without a boarding pass to get to Frankfurt. So I headed to one of the counters for check-in, where I received my boarding pass with no difficulty at all.

Ah, I see there are still problems galre when it comes to SK/LH check in in Scandinavia

Hi William,

Nice final report of 2011, thanks for sharing.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 1):

- When BA cancel my flight I get an e-mail, thought that was pretty standard practice, seems not!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
The lunch that was served was rather strange and consisted of shredded Zucchini with a slice of poached salmon and some Bündnerfleisch. It also seems that since my previous trip in Business Class, Swiss has reverted to using plastic dishes and cutlery.

- Looks pretty ok, not worried about plastic dishes but metal cutlery is a must in Business.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
the carpets looked rather worn and filthy

- Yuck, they are disgusting!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 2):
Of the three flights with a Bue1 B: 717 I did on this trip, none were identical. This aircraft has a bulkhead covered in blue leather and had two lavatories at the back but none in front.

- Interesting observation, don't recall picking up that detail previously.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
breakfast was served, which came with nicely warmed bread

- Good job you had something in the lounge, that's a small looking brekky!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
lunch was served, which consisted of a chicken breast on salad leaves with some sort of potato salad. Every tray came with a bottle of wine on it

- Looks nice.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 6):
I stayed at the Hotel Nimb, which is on the grounds of the Tivoli gardens

- Nice looking hotel, would you stay again?

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
the aircraft was equipped with the new Eurokabine. I was under the impression that Lufthansa was getting rid of its Boeing narrow-bodies, so I didn't think they would bother to refit them. In any case, those seats are just so thin!

- Not tried these seats yet, how does the comfort compare to the older types?

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
The meal service was typically German fare, with loads of wurst and speck, both of which are not top of the list of my favourite foods. At least the starter was good. It consisted of red snapper in a saffron sauce.

- Hmm, odd looking items on that tray, not sold on it.

Interesting your comments about LX, not flown them for a while I'm afraid, must do so again and see what is what.

Rgds

Great tripreport as usual!

Thank you.

Quoting deltamartin (Reply 13):
Blue1 Premium.

Well you see, it's all rather complicated. On the Blue1 website they talk of Blue1 Premium. The experience felt very much like Economy Extra, but when I checked on my Senator account, the flights were registered as Business Class and booked in RBD Z, which is a Business subclass with many of the Star Alliance airlines.

Quoting deltamartin (Reply 13):
I will probably book a trip soon for the same reason!

A kindred spirit. Well, excellent idea is all I can say. I wouldn't mind flying Blue1 again, although next time I think I'd prefer to sit somewhere near the back to be able to hear the engines. That's part of the fun.

Quoting deltamartin (Reply 13):
One of the best ones out there, in my opinion.

What I find especially cool is that they have varying liveries. Very nice.

Quoting deltamartin (Reply 13):
Such a lovely city, I should pay another proper visit to that town soon again.

Funny you should say that, it's what I also thought on my way back yesterday. I've been to Copenhagen many times, but either only just for one day or in transit. I think this was the first time I really took the time to explore the city and it was well worth it.

Hi 717Flyer

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 14):
Hi William,
Thanks for a superb read - featuring some familiar views of HEL and CPH. Many beautiful pics from Copenhagen too - I never get enough of that city, I guess I should book another trip there soon.

Thank you. I'm pleased with the quality of the pictures. Once the sun came out it really brought the city to life!

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 14):
Not very impressive. I can understand a five-minute schedule change is nothing to notify of but the cancellation of a flight is a quite serious matter.

Maybe I was just unlucky. Strange thing was, when I pointed out to the agent at SWISS that I had not been informed, they didn't react in any way, no apology or surprise.

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 14):
That sounds like a very good reason to go if you ask me! The B717 is my favourite aircraft type and Blue1 is also my preferred airline so it was nice to read you also had a pretty nice experience with them.

I can really understand why you like the B717 so much. It's a nifty thing and offers quite a pleasant and comfortable ride. As for Blue1, I think what I liked was that they were so unpretentious. A solid performance, I like that.

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 14):
Hmm, I didn't know LX flew to OUL?

Would be cool though, using Blue1 metal preferably.

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 14):
Well, that is the commuter apron for you. Actually it is quite a short bus drive away from those bus gates where KF flights usually depart (13A and 14A).

We were parked much further than that, there was a UPS B767 standing there, we were behind that.

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 14):
Unless HEL was my home airport it would always be my preferred transfer airport.

The transfer certainly was seamless. I would have been curious to see Finnair's hub operation but on both occasions things were rather calm in their neck of the wood.

Thanks for posting Martin and 717Flyer!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 15):
Thanks for this kinda nice picturesque report. So was this trip a kind of Christmas gift for yourself?

Yes, but it was rather unusual for me just the same. For the last nine years I've flown to Japan between Christmas and New Year, but 2011 had been rather hectic so I wanted to do something closer to home and less tiring.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 15):
I just wonder why it's posted so fragmented? Was it you or some site glitches?

Well, basically it was to avoid site glitches. I took me a while to write the report up and post the pictures and I was afraid I might time out, which pisses me off no end when it happens.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 15):
What did you think of HEL and OUL?

HEL is nice and modern, and very convenient. As for Oulu it's hard to say. First of all it was all a bit of a rush when I arrived because I knew there was a bus into town leaving shortly. The airport is also undergoing expansion right now, so much of it was covered in scaffolding.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 15):
So he was in Y and placed himself in C without the cabin crew intervening?

On the contrary, she brought him a refreshing towel and a bottle of mineral water and apologised that we would not be receiving a meal tray because he was not in Business!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 15):
I think it prevents the plane from tipping over in case of bad loading?

That's what I was thinking. But surely it would have to be fixed to the ground for that. Or maybe not?

Quoting sultanils (Reply 15):
Poor you... No pics of that?

You've never seen ice cubes?

Quoting sultanils (Reply 15):

Well it's kind of something in between.

Thanks, my pleasure.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 17):
- When BA cancel my flight I get an e-mail, thought that was pretty standard practice, seems not!

I have a booking to go to New York via LCY in April with BA. There have been a number of minor schedule changes and BA has kept me informed on every single one. As you say, you'd think that would be common practice, especially if it's a cancellation!

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 17):
- Looks pretty ok, not worried about plastic dishes but metal cutlery is a must in Business.

It tasted okay, it was just rather an odd combination. I'm travelling with SWISS again in two weeks time. I expect everything may have changed again by then...you never know with SWISS.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 17):
- Good job you had something in the lounge, that's a small looking brekky!

It was okay, there was more than enough bread and they came round a number of times.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 17):
- Nice looking hotel, would you stay again?

This was my second stay there. And I would certainly stay there again, but I also think it makes quite a big difference whether or not the Tivoli is open or not.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 17):
- Not tried these seats yet, how does the comfort compare to the older types?

The flight was only about one hour long, so it was okay. But the seats are awfully hard and I can't say I would really fancy having to sit on one of them for longer than 90 minutes.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 17):
- Hmm, odd looking items on that tray, not sold on it.

Yeah, kind of looked like they were trying to get rid of leftovers...

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 17):
Interesting your comments about LX, not flown them for a while I'm afraid, must do so again and see what is what.

I find they tend to be better on long-haul flights. Somehow on short-haul flights it doesn't take much for the crew to loose the plot and then it's a complete mess.

Mark, Nils, Gabriel thanks for posting!

Cheers,
William

I loved seeing your photos of Copenhagen - we saw a lot of the same things in September, and your pictures brought us back there! We loved our week vacation there.

Looks like you had some nice flights - The lounge in CPH for SAS looks awesome; too bad optiontown.com did not work for us on that return leg to ORD.

Best,

Thanks for sharing, quite a trek! Sorry for the Swiss flight being cancelled and strange enought they haven't informed you. Did you book through LX directly? Because if not, they maybe informed your travel agent, let's say Expedia or something, and it got lost there. I found LX quite reliable when it comes to informing passengers in such cases.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
The crew on this short flight was very good and the purser even made sure to address passengers by name, something you don't get very often on short-haul flights these days.

Indeed, however I had a great service on Lufthansa travelling LYS-FRA a few days ago. Business was compeltely empty, and the first 4 or 5 rows in Economy Class were only accessible to full fare eco and Star Gold or similar... Anyway, in this part of the cabin we were only two people, one other frequent flyer on the left side of the aisle, and me on the right side.
The flight attendant adressed us by name and gave us glassware and refills... Basically a business class service, except for the food which was the regular eco catering. Remember, I was travelling economy class. I'm sure this is not policy, but since business was empty the agent probably thought nobody would complain if status guest in economy class would get a better service today. Absolutely impressed.

That really is a pity about optiontown. I think it's a brilliant idea. I wasn't quite sure my flights would get confirmed either, and I only received the notification from them that the upgrade had worked one day before I left for Copenhagen, so two days before the actual flight.

SWISS has no excuses this time. I always make all my flight bookings directly with the airline. It saves hassle when something goes wrong. Maybe it was just a coincidence and they would have called me a few days later anyway.

I had a similar experience with Swissair many years ago. It was on the last flight from Geneva to Zurich with a F. 100. There was a larger group in Business which apparently no-showed, leaving the crew with a full tray of canapes. As we were only about 20 passengers in Economy they just gave them to us instead!

Thanks for posting and commenting guys!

Hi William,

Well, well, well. Here's me, excited about what disasters you encountered on this trip and...well, nothing. Just a vanishing LX flight. You'll have to do better next time

Seriously though, I enjoyed your shots of Copenhagen a lot, as well as the ones of Basel, the railway station really is a beautiful building.

Interesting catering on the CPH-FRA leg, the wurst & speck looks vile, but the dessert seems to make up for it.

That's bad to hear, I had a similar case with ezy, but then I would expect better from LX.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
What's more, the flight attendant let him stay there for the entire flight. It's these little things that really crack me up about Swiss. I mean, I know I'm always nagging about SWISS, but is it really too much to ask for them to do things properly?

No,not too much to ask at all - it isn't fair on you & your seat neighbour who'd paid for C Class.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
My first impressions of the cabin were good, although the carpets looked rather worn and filthy

Eerrgh. The carpet is disgusting.

They look so thin they could almost pass as crackers.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Swiss did not manage to change my opinion of them, namely that their product is inconsistent and their flight attendants simply couldn't care less most of the time. Of course there have been exceptions in terms of the quality of the crews. But all in all, I think Swiss has now reached a point where it shows that you get what you pay for. If you pay your crew crap salaries, then crap is what you're going to get.

I've never had any bad experiences on LX. Some crews are better than others but then that's the same anywhere. I do agree with you about the pay, they deserve more (and certainly a better bonus than a wooden board).

Happy flying in 2012 and looking forward to some more interesting experiences of yours!
