Lufthansa – The best way to fly!

Introduction:



The December holidays are always a thrill. There’s always something interesting for me to do, and this year it was no different. Now living in Rome, Italy, I had to find my way back to my hometown in Caracas, Venezuela, to meet the family, parents and friends. I had initially planned on flying down with my original return ticket that had initiated with the obvious CCS-FCO route in Alitalia. The catch though, was a small trick I was ‘forced’ to do. Being an aviation junkie, I mixed this round-trip fare with a nice return flight on Air France’s B777-300ER, which got announced as an upgrade to the CDG-CCS-CDG route back in mid-2011 – all at no additional cost.

I must admit the 77W makes me go crazy. I immediately booked the trip in Business Class and couldn’t wait to hop on that amazing machine that I love so much. I had already flown on Air Canada’s (coach) and Turkish Airlines (Business), and thanks to that, the seven-seven-whiskey is now hovering on top of my favorite aircraft list.

Unfortunately, there’s a word that causes a lot of trouble every time it’s heard: EXAMS! Yes, exams are the disgrace of human race. Professors decided to riot my awesome flying plans and I was forced to postpone my return to CCS to the 23rd or 24th of December. Unfortunately, AF was packed… not a chance for me to get home for Christmas. The only option was Lufthansa, flying down on the 23rd of December at a very high price, Y fare on both legs.

My mind went into standby/self-destruct mode. I was literally pissed. I was quitting an awesome ride in Business Class for a tight 10-hr flight down to Venezuela… I then called in my travel agent and she gladly told me that for an additional $450 I could get the cheapest Business Class fare on the CCS-FRA-FCO legs. I then analyzed…

Already paying an expensive ticket for a ride in hell (coach it is), I decided to use some of my beloved savings and bump my arse up to the ride in heaven – Business Class indeed.

Here’s the trip report (and my first report in over a year-time) of this cool flight on Lufthy’s longest airliner, sitting up front. Hell yes! Let’s see if Lufthansa truly is “The best way to fly.”

The Trip: Bye Bye Caribbean

Well there I was, in Margarita Island – the so-called Pearl of the Caribbean. After spending some quality time with family, friends and relatives, it was time to get a nice kick back to reality. The day to head back lastly arrived.

I woke up early in the morning. Drove my parents to the Margarita Airport (PMV) and then flew them to the private airport located in Southern Caracas (SVCS). The plane in question is a Twin Commander 695A One-Thousand.

I took off at 09.30 with a full load of 9 passengers and numerous pieces of luggage.

Climbed up to FL180 and flew all the way to Caracas. Total flight time was 42 minutes. Enjoy the pictures and the Landing video (this is a pretty cool airport, just take a look at it).

Later on, we had to drive back home, pick up my luggage, and then head over to the Simon Bolivar International Airport (CCS). I got there at 14.50, with the flight scheduled to depart at 17.35.

Psyched about my Business Class hop over the pond, I went straight to the dedicated line for the front-section of the plane.

When I got to the counters, there were signs that depicted First and Business Class, but I was taken-care of by the Coach clerks. Not too sure why, but I had my two boarding passes less than 6 minutes after I had gotten there. Not bad at all!

Traveling from CCS in Business Class it’s usually tougher than from other locations. My experience with Alitalia has always been satisfactory, being quite good during check-in and most of all, during on-board service. Thus far, LH beats AZ in check-in proficiency. I was impressed with the processing speed and the clerk’s rapidness.

With my boarding pass in-hand, I went straight to the security queue and passport control, which at this time of day (when most EU-bound flights depart), it’s usually a quick visit to the underworld. Good to see, however, the ‘electronic passport’ control line was open and I was through in less than 4 minutes. WOW! Everything seems to be running smooth.

Once inside, I went to snap some photos at the Terminal, something that I somehow regret. The airport was refurbished and redesigned some 5 years ago… unfortunately, it seems as if it was done with play dough. Look at how it’s standing right now. Not looking too good. (And if one compares it to Frankfurt’s…)

I was impressed to see it was being refurbished too. It desperately needed a touch, I’m glad they remembered.

Since I was going to be sitting for the next 11 hours, I decided to go for a quick walk around the terminal and get a bit closer to Gate 26. Soon enough, boarding was called at 16.40, one-hour before scheduled departure.

I was the 9th person to board. Thankfully, no National Guards were at the jetbridge to inspect every single passenger that goes into the plane. With Alitalia, Iberia, and Air Europa this is a Standard Operating procedure. If you book a flight with either of these, you’ll get a full pat down by the guards as a Combo. I was surprised not to see them with LH. Maybe they have an agreement?

As I approached the aircraft’s L2 door, the cool moment of ‘turning left’ finally arrived. I went straight to my seat 7A, which is in the second to last row before the L2 door. Right after the door, there are two additional Business Class rows, and then Coach.

Excited, to say the least, I took some photos, unloaded my travel goodies (laptop, iPad, headsets…) and started inspecting the Recaro seat Lufthansa has to offer on this A346.

Already settled, with a Russian passenger sitting next to me, we were given some Orange Juice, out of a choice of Champagne and Water.

The seat was very comfortable and spacious, albeit getting out to the aisle with a passenger sitting there would be almost impossible. Soon to be seen…

Looking out the window I could see the glass jetbridge with the boarding passengers moving in quickly. In no time, boarding was completed and doors were closed at 17.05. We pushed back 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Maybe Lufthansa is the only punctual thing in Venezuela, huh?

The four RR Trent 556-61 Engines were turned on, though I noticed ONLY because I was looking at them. Otherwise, it would have been impossible to know. They are incredibly silent in the A346!

When I was young, I wanted to do this job… Maybe still today?

Unfortunately, Venezuela’s ATC is something not to be proud of. We stood at the hold-short point of the runway for 20 minutes waiting for 3 aircraft to land. This always happens, they just don’t dare to dispatch aircraft when there’s incoming traffic (even with 15-mile separation!).

Lastly, it was lift-up time! Here’s the video of the powerful and heavy takeoff. Notice how the engines want to rip off from the wings when the power thrust is set. AMAZING!

Takeoff was superb. We climbed our way to 36,000ft and soon later the sunset for a night crossing over the Atlantic. Enjoy the photos.

Immediately after reaching cruising altitude, we were handed Hot Towels and La Carte for the evening and pre-arrival meals. I was anxious to see the Business Class product from this great carrier.

The Amenity Kit was already placed in a side compartment from the seat. To my surprise, it was this [very] cool A380 box.


.

Even though the A380 box is by far the coolest Amenity Kit in my collection, it lacks many of the things other carriers have to offer. There was only a pair of socks, lip balsam, eye and ear blockers, toothbrush and covers for the airplane’s headsets. The products don’t seem to belong to a particular brand, whereas in Alitalia they still have Bvlgari and Turkish has Do&Co. I was expecting some creams, soaps and other goodies that even American Airlines puts inside their kits.

At 18.10 (Venezuelan time), service began. Our tables were set and we were given Nuts with a beverage choice. Trying to follow a friend’s advise, I went for the Champagne that was being served on-board with the intention of drinking it for the rest of the evening.

Maybe German culture? The Champagne was not cold – whatsoever. It was served warm, truly a first for me.

In the meantime, a better show was happening outside the window:

With my warm champagne, I browsed the IFE to search for viable options. I immediately noticed its ‘mandatory’ to use Lufthansa’s headsets, as there’s no port for personal ones. Not too happy about it, I had to put my noise-cancelling headsets away to watch a movie and use the old/busted, which are provided by the airline.

Not comfortable with the IFE programming and the headset situation, I decided to bring out assistance: my iPad, who definitely allows me to use my Bose headsets, was fully loaded with nice TV series… so there, “Flying Wild Alaska” a-la warm champagne it is. (I recommend this TV Series for those of you who are Pilots or like flying).

Meanwhile, after heading North for a while, the Captain finally turned right heading toward the Old Continent. To my viewing pleasure, this is how it looked:

The first course arrived. The Hors d’Oeuvre consisted on a Marinated Grilled Chicken Breast with Balsamic Syrup and Grilled Vegetables.

The bread selection was really good. The Flight Attendant came in with a basket full of at least 6 different kinds of bread, of which I chose these two:

The presentation of the first dish was OK. All the components of the dish were too cold, so the flavors were not outstanding. It could have been better.

The other choices were:

- Seafood Salad with Grilled Mango.
- Seasonal Greens, Roasted Fennel, Green Asparagus, and Toasted Pine Nuts.

The main course (entrée) then arrived in an aluminum container.

I was offered a choice of:

- Tenderloin Beef with Port and Stillion Sauce Potatoes and String Beans
- Salmon Steak with Vegetable Crust in Champagne Sauce, Pearl Barley, Grilled Asparagus, and Pumpkin Balls
- Eggplant Raviolini with Tomato Sauce, Basil Compote and Vegetables.

I went for the latter, which consisted on triangular Raviolis with a mix of Asian-styled veggies.

From an initial point of view, it’s almost impossible to see the ravioli. They were laying down-under.

The dish was quite good. Not the best I’ve ever had, though.

Finally I decided to go for the Fruit and skip dessert. I was feeling good with what I had and all I needed was a Port Wine to close a rather nice meal.

Surprisingly, the Fruit was [by far] the best component of the entire meal.

The Port came with a pair of Pralines, which paired incredibly well with it.

In conclusion, the meal was good, though nothing to remember with excitement. What I disapproved was the whole presentation of the meal. I was expecting to see a more ‘personalized’ form of service, where they would actually serve the dish in front of you depending on what you really wanted. On this matter, Alitalia’s presentation, for me, is way ahead Lufthansa’s. Plates are served on-demand and look far more professional and delicate. The Flight Attendants narrate the available options and construct the dish in front of you. With this, the overall feeling one gets is that of freshness and innovation. The same applies with Turkish Airlines, which beats both altogether. In Lufthansa, plates look pre-built and there’s no freshness feeling involved.

Another detail I found quite unpleasant was that Flight Attendants didn’t care to remember the passenger’s choice of beverage. I was asked three times what I was drinking when a refill was necessary. And the champagne was also warm later on.

At that point, I wasn’t too fond on Lufthansa’s Business Class meal product. It made it look like a fancy Coach type of service. I would definitely get rid of the aluminum containers to begin with, and later on begin paying more attention to small details.

With the stomach full, I had to [literally] jump over the Russian guy to go use the restroom to prep-up for a nice rest. I closed the lids, set up for sleep, and try to charge my batteries for the next day.

The seat was VERY comfortable. I configured it to the flat position and thanks to the really comfortable pillow and cozy blanket; I managed to get a great rest. From the amenity kit, I used the socks with eye and ear blocks. Good night!

Albeit there was some strong turbulence along the flight, I managed to sleep 4 hours. I find it amusing to see how turbulence relaxes me. That’s a bit twisted, some say!

Awakened by the smell of coffee and breakfast I set up my table once again. I was offered a choice of a 39,000ft Omelette with Smoked Bacon and Ratatouille or a ‘Cold’ breakfast of Smoked Salmon, Black Forest Ham, Visking Ham, Cream and Smoked Cheese.

I chose to have the warm dish, which had a small plain omelette and a rather fatty/greasy piece of bacon with a garnish of ratatouille.

The omelette was good, but I didn’t dare to taste Mr. Cholesterol. If I had had a hangover then it would have been another story!

Along with it, came a plate of fruit: Papaya with a Passion Fruit topping. I hate Papaya, so I had to pass.

I also had some Orange Juice, with the always-necessary cup of black coffee.

1007 KM/H! – we got to fly at 1018 KM/H at one point! Just 218 KM/H below the speed of sound!

Breakfast, yet again, didn’t fulfill my expectations. I bet in Coach people got served the same omelette but in a different presentation.

Right after the service, we were handed a Business Class Survey, which I gladly completed. I am truly amazed by the ‘perfection’ of Lufthansa’s service. They have been trained so much that there’s no personalization in what they do, and that could hurt their performance a bit. Their punctuality is beyond belief. Of all the flights I have taken with them, there has never been a +10 minute delay in departing the gate. That’s why I love LH.

Meanwhile, outside it was still pitch dark, with a little less than 45 minutes to go.

A few minutes later, the Captain came on the PA announcing our descent into Frankfurt. He also mentioned the weather being ‘nasty’ down at the airport and apologized for the continuous turbulence during the pond crossing.

In no-time, we got inside some really denser IFR conditions. The clouds were so dense I couldn’t see the winglet of the massive wing.

Finally, with some lights coming out from below, we cleared the clouds and approached Frankfurt.

Sad to see the flight end, the A346 taxied to a remote stand, which I now realize is a common from almost all European carriers flying to CCS. Alitalia, Air France and Lufthansa all park their CCS-bound flights at remote stands, something that could get a bit annoying if there’s rain or snow, or even if you’re flying in Business and want to exit the airport rapidly.

Racing an A321 in the Bus

Once out of the bus, it took over 5 minutes for me to go through Passport Control and then on to the A terminal at FRA. The walk was nice and entertaining as this is truly a magnificent airport.

Conclusions:


Flying with Lufthansa is great. Their flights are on time and their airports work close to perfection. They have great views of the aircraft and their fast taxiways are a few feet off the windows. I just enjoy so much traveling through FRA, DUS and MUC that it might become one of my first options. If I weren’t married to the OneWorld and SkyTeam FFPs I would definitely consider it!

From the Business Class point of view, I would definitely consider flying them again. However, for a similar price I might just go with Alitalia, which in May will start taking their new metal (A330) down to CCS. With their fully-flat beds in Business, and their service which I honestly find much better than Lufthansa, it may very well be my option for the next time. However, if they were to keep the old/busted B763s, then Lufthansa is the winner.

I still have to try the Air France product, however. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to fly their B77Ws any more. I might have a chance to fly their B772s, or more likely, the A343s from CCS, which will return in the schedules from March 2012. I hope their products don’t change much so that I can have a better perspective in the TATL market from CCS.

My personal opinion is, with such a large Business Class (60 seats), service can’t be perfect. There are just too many passengers for a service to get close to being personalized. In Alitalia, Turkish and American, there are usually from 28 to 36 passengers in the Business Cabin, and I truly find the service better and less hassled. Maybe you seasoned travelers can correct me if I’m wrong? These are just my two cents from the few premium experiences I’ve had. I would have felt not so good if I had spent my miles on a LH upgrade... I'd love to spend them on an airline that takes away my breath in Business Class.

With regards to the plane, I definitely like the B77W better. The windows are much larger, the cabin seems more comfortable, and the engines do sound much better!! Just my opinion here too  

I hope you all enjoyed my trip report. I wrote it on the FRA-FCO leg, just so I had all the input fresh for it.

I’ll be glad to answer your questions to the best of my ability.

Thanks for sharing. I had a similar feeling about my meals in Business Class with LH. I had a flight from BOG, and I can tell you they definitely had no agreement with the local authorities concerning a special gate check exemption  
I find it strange that they use AA's lounge in BOG and CCS, while using AV's lounge would make more sense...

Deboarding/Boarding flights with busses in FRA is unfortunately very frequent and has nothing to do with CCS... You should see the amoun of North American carrier's (Jumbo's, 777's...) waiting on remote positions during mornings...

I'm underwhelmed by the photos of your LH J class service - the food definitely looks like plated Economy Class meals. We had a much better presentation on SAS J back in September from IAD-CPH ...

The only thing I did not like much about your report were your references to coach as "hell" and the "coach people" remark was rather un-diplomatic. Just because one pays a higher fare does not allow him*her to refer to other people in contempt. I fly coach, I don´t have the money to pay J, but I do not feel to be a second category person, or as you tell it "coach people".

Me too. I feel LH should have their own in CCS. IB and AA are the only ones with own lounges. I had also the possibility of going to the Premiere Lounge, but I had already been there and I don't like it at all, too small and cramped. AA's Admirals is way better.

I was underwhelmed too. I was truly expecting something nicer than what I had. It was great! but not awesome!

It was very basic. I'm guessing airlines which have First and Business together can run into this kind of trouble. Airlines who have only a Business Class, though, perform a lot better.

You're absolutely right, Adam. I'm a coach flyer myself. As a matter of fact, the FRA-CCS leg I had to fly it in coach, like I mentioned it in the report. I just see it this way because I've been blesse to fly in Business a few times in my life, and when I do, it just feels too good to be true!

I'm not putting the coach travelers in a second category. I just wanted to portray the difference of flying in J and Y, an maybe I got a screw loose when I was letting myself go through the keyboard

What can I say? Great report, as usual. Your reports are usually funny and fun to read and this is no exception (aside from your nasty "dont mingle with the peasants" comment, hehe).

I have flown lufthansa long haul in J (FRA-EZE on a 744) and have to say that I truly liked their service. Yes, they were not all smiley, but they were very polite, and efficient...

AA´s admirals club in CCS is appaling, very crowded usually, and with very poor selection of drinks and food.

It would have been nice to do a trip report on your "cattle class" experience to see the difference on the same route!

I used the AV lounge in BOG, and it wasn't pretty. Someone I was travelling with also looked at the AA lounge and he said it was much nicer and less busy, which is probably why LH chose it.

I started to laugh when I saw the photo of the roof detail..... it seems to be an "access hatch" usually used for the maintenance of hidden mechanical/electrical/plumbing fixtures... They are usually made out of stainless steel... Also, the concrete finish on the columns and beams is of poor quality. Usually exposed concrete is rubbed, patched and skimmed to a nice finish.

Lufthansa seems to offer a nice product! seats look very comfy, and as you mention punctuality is a big plus!

Once inside, I went to snap some photos at the Terminal, something that I somehow regret. The airport was refurbished and redesigned some 5 years ago… unfortunately, it seems as if it was done with play dough. Look at how it’s standing right now. Not looking too good. (And if one compares it to Frankfurt’s…)

It is sad to see that my hometown terminal goes back to the past. There are no enhancements or changes whatsoever. I must admit that the Maiquetia 2000 project stayed in 2000 and sadly there has not been any improvement plans in sight. Venezuela is in desperate need of renewing their terminals in its principal cities. We are keeping that 80's look and structures that are not efficient in the XXI century.

I thought about it, but I rarely find motivation to write cattle class reports. It has to be a very special flight/plane.

This is American Airlines' Admirals Club. It's always jam packed because AA has 4 daily flights to MIA and 3 weekly flights to JFK and DFW. I didn't know LH also shared this lounge.

This is a Private Airport south of Caracas. Only private and Military planes land here.

We call it the Aircraft Carrier. Most of the times, there is a layer of clouds below the mountains, so it looks like one. It's a dangerous airport, but fun to land on. It's pretty challenging!

Haha dude, it's quite embarrasing. And the holes in the concrete, well, that's the very original structure of the airport which dates back several decades. That hasn't changed. The airport, overall, is very cheap and poorly done. I'm sad to see it this way.

I second you on that. LH is an awesome carrier. Like I said, I still have to try the AF Business product. They say it's among the best...

Agreed. These A346 are due for an interior renewal. Even in Economy, the IFE is old and outdated.
