Hoşgeldiniz / Καλώς ορίσατε/ Welcome
So I had ended up in Toronto , Canada as part of my months vacation. I stopped in Toronto for some shopping and to have a reunion with my Cousin from Guyana who I had not seen for 10 years ! It was to be a very special few days for me. After my short stay I needed to get to Athens to see my Family so I looked at various ways. I didnt want to go Via FRA or ZRH as I wanted to do the long flight and get sleep and be just a short hop from ATH after the longhaul. TK has been advertising quite alot in the Greek market for the USA and Canada. After checking the availability and schedule it was decision time. TK is was to be
I have been a fan of TK for many years and I always said they were an airline to watch . It seems I was right. I have tried various products of theirs over the years. I was lucky enough to be the first ever F Class passenger on their LHR-IST product. I also was able to sample their Y and J class products on the A330/A310/B737 etc...
I have always had good flights with them. Ever since I have seen the new Business Class product advertised I had wanted to try it so this would be a good chance to see how far TK have come.

After a nice few days and catching up with my Cousin it was time to take the shuttle to the Airport.
Journey time is around 40 minutes and they had free wifi onboard. I arrived at the airport and made my
way to the TK check in .
I checked in at the desk . The lady was pleasant and tagged by three cases to ATH. She then
invited me to use the Air Canada lounge the whole process took around 4-5 minutes. I then made
my way through security and to the Air Canada lounge .
I was quite impressed with the lounge . Lots of nice areas to chill out and plenty of food and drink.

Soon it was time to head to the gate :
It was cold on the way to the airport but I didnt realise it was snowing !
My ride to Istanbul. We will need to get de iced first though :
Soon it was time to board. Families/people needing extra time and J Class and *G were invited
to board first. I made my way down the air bridge and was greeted by a FA with a trolley outside the
aircraft with amenity kits and newspapers. I like that concept . The FA was smiling and it was a nice
welcome onboard.
As soon as I entered the cabin I was welcomed and shown to my seat.
No sooner had I sat down after taking the photos an FA came and offered me a choice of
Orange juice-Water or Champagne . Only one choice for me on this important occassion.
The bubbles won
I love this pattern. If TK J seats ever come on the market I will buy a set
Another FA came around with headsets .
First impressions of this cabin were very good. Nice layout and colours and very welcoming.
The B777 is my favourite aircraft compared to the A330 transatlantic. I know people argue
about the number of seats in a row but for me the spacious B777 in J is the clear winner.
The A380 is the only aircraft I rate above the B777.
A pic of the amenity kit everyone got at the door :
Shortly the onboard Chef came around and handed out chocolates :
Then the crew came around and handed out J Class amenity kits and slippers:
The safety demo commenced.
Very nice indeed I must say :
I close the amenity kit and do not open anything . My Aunt in Athens has instructed me that she wants
the nice TK amenity kit with the Bvlgari pieces. Seeing as she will be cooking and baking all my favourite
food and cakes for the next two weeks I will not argue

Soon its time to leave the gate and make our way to the runway to be de iced. This seems to
take for ages and we are around 45 mins late. Im not too worried as the flight time is to be alot
less than I thought. I had one hour and 20 mintues connection in IST so didnt want any delays
in arriving.
Finally we made our way down the runway and time to say goodbye to Canada :
Soon after take off the crew spring into action and hand out hot towels.

have breakfast and orange juice and hot towels were handed out.
Followed by a really nice breakfast.
The onboard Chef came to me and asked if there was anything else I wanted to which I asked for
a Cappuchino. Soon enough it was delivered and very good it was too ! Does anyone know what
device TK use to make these ? Nespresso maybe ?
Shortly after a trip to see Comfort Class which is a very nice cabin and decent seats:
Followed by Economy class :
Then back to my bed for a rest
Soon we were nearing IST and the cabin was made ready for landing.
Connecting flight information which is a great idea .

the crew for a wonderful flight and they appreciated the comments and said ''Your welcome anytime''.

I had decided to buy my Aunt a set of Calphalon pans also to which she was delighted. She also
love her TK amenity kit
So thats the end of my report. I hope you all enjoyed it. Sorry for the hundreds of photos but I wanted
to show you the full product of TK. I think you will agree they are impressive. I found the seat the most
comfortable Business Class flatbed I have experienced in a long time. The food was 10/10. The service
was perfect and I couldnt fault the crew for anything. Some people complain about lack of smiles from the
crew but to me they are friendly and do their job and never turned down a request. I prefer that than false
''Disney'' smiles and OTT service.
The B777 experience has only hardened my opinion that an A330 is second best in J across the Atlantic.
Sorry I know some will not like that but its only my opinion
The new TK lounge at IST is one of the best in my opinion and I think the catering is the best in any of the
Star Alliance lounges.
For longhaul travel I would certainly recommend Turkish Airlines. They will give the Gulf carriers a run for their
money with a product like this. Its great to see TK picking up more passengers from the Greek market and I have noticed that the flights between IST-ATH and vv are packed even with OA A3 SQ and TK on the routes.
I look forward to your comments and replies as usual.
Many thanks for reading .
Kind regards

Hola Philip!
Once again I have to say that you impressed me with such a report, really great!
Let's go step by step.
Although I have been many times to Canada, three in the last year, I have never been to Toronto which seems a great city but I do not know if it has the charm of Montréal or the great scenery that Vancouver has, anyway I would like at least go through their airport at least once which seems really nice. AC lounges tend to have the same food, at least your pictures show the same things I had for lunch at YYC and YVR two weeks ago. They are usually pretty well stocked and have plenty of drinks as well.
TK deserves to become a 5 star airline... according to your report and the pictures they seem to be a great airline. Food looks delicious, very well presented and the idea of having a chef on board gives it a classy touch that not many airlines have nowadays. I think is excellent. The seat looks really comfortable and the cabin very roomy despite having three seats in the middle section.
I am surprised to see that YYZ-IST is only an 8 hours flight, I thought it would take longer.
The cabin seems to be very well kept and the bathroom is impressive with that sink... it really feels you are flying something different.
TK lounge at IST is a master piece of good and modern design... again impressed.
In your last flight, how do they mange to serve a whole meal in such a short flight? Touché again!
I have only one negative comment, why do they show Manchester U. players on their safety demo? They should go for FC Barcelona, which they sponsor as well. At least you got a couple of pics of their B777 with Barça on it. They have flown it to BCN some times when the team is playing important games across Europe and beyond.
BTW, how do you manage to take so many pictures? Do you have time for everything?
Have a great year of flying! Thanks a lot for the report. Keep them coming!

Wow Philip. What an amazing report!! You said TK were impressive but I didn't realise they were this good. The lounge in IST looks absolutely stunning. Well worth going back for an extended layover I reckon. I'm surprised it was only just over 8 hours from YYZ to IST. That seems very short for a flight of that distance. You must have had tail winds.
The pictures of Toronto are lovely too. I've always wanted to go there and I fancy it even more now having seen your shots. The Courtyard looks like a good hotel.

TK is a fantastic carrier, too bad they gave up the First...
To me TK have the best J within Europe (If we consider Turkish is within the euro zone, but it's not the point, though I'd love to have them to boost the economy). They beat AF, LX, LH, BA easily.
Having a chief onboard it's a huge asset. I got the same seat on the IST-CDG in C using the 330. It was very comfy. the blanket is the very nice btw.
The lounge is outstanding !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TK you re the one !

No probs mate . Im juggling them around. For me Status is more important then the miles. I mean I really value lounges/priority check in /extra baggage allowance more than redemptions so I have now guranteed *G to 2013 even if the worst case scenario with BD happens. BA status I have no interest in as I rarely fly them and that wont change. I think I will go for A3 Gold in the end and maintain it as Im already Silver with them and its very easy to get/maintain. Im crediting to BD purely to get to 38K to see if I get renewed to BMI when my membership is up for renewal in June. Ironically enough after this year Im lifetime Gold ! Yeah yeah life sucks LOL... but thats the way the cookie crumbles.

I am one of those people, shame on me For me the only advantage of the TK 77Ws are the bigger lavatories for the J Cabin. The middle seat is a definite no no, but luckily I see that your flight wasn't full and the seat next to you was empty. Also, depending on the crew, the fewer number of J seats on the 333s (same seats as 777s) usually means better service. But then, its a matter of taste.

I come across some excellent crew as well on TK, IMHO, it is very depended on the Purser. To me TK is like Jekyll & Hyde, if I may say so. You can have excellent crew and everything going flawless; but then you also have the occasions when Hyde shows up Especially during irregular operations. TK just needs to fix the ground staff, fine in IST thanks to the new IST lounge in there. I go there for any problems instead of talking to awful TGS staff at transfer/gate. But try BGS in PEK and SATS HK in HKG. A complete disgrace.
Not to mention the 77W should be J42 Y28, rest Y... The current J28 W63 Yxx is ridiculous.

Brilliant report Philip, every time I read one of yours I end up checking fares to try the featured airline myself, first it was Swiss, then it was getting back on board Bmi and now I find myself wanting to fly Turkish!
That lounge is incredible and I love their cabins, some airlines just stick in seats with their colours on, others go over the top and boarder on tacky but the TK 777 cabin looks great, they seem to celebrate Turkish design and style. This level of service from TK came out of nowhere, at least I wasn't aware they were this good with their on board product and lounges! Surely they've earned their place as a major player in the years ahead?

Problem is TGS (Turkish Ground Services) are totally de-motivated since TK spun that off to somebody with low wages. I was recently denied boarding 25 min before dep, boarding pass clearly says "BOARDING ENDS 15 MIN BEFORE DEPARTURE". Protested and they moved me to the next day, and charged change fee! Then charged a rebooking fee ex-IST too etc. And as "Best Airline in Europe" they need to fix up their ground contracts. For example in HEL, the non-Schengen lounge they use (read: CHEAP) is not acceptable.

You did not disappoint on this trip report - a very enjoyable experience to share with you.
Particularly appropriate as I am of to YYZ in a week - though sadly on the marginally less glamorous Air Transat!- so it was good to see some scenes of the city and the airport. Hopefully it will be snowing when I am there.
Food looked great - how did the onboard chef present himself? I presume they receive the same high levels of customer service. I am not convinced that I love the OB Chef idea yet.
Lounge at IST looked beautiful. A curious old curvy theme going on but executed in a classy way.

Not Philip here, but the TK Chefs really vary a lot. I recently only saw one to hand out the great Godiva chocolates and disappearing. Another one nicely plating the main cources and asking for comments. TK needs more consistent standards. But I think it's the usual fast growth problems.

TK is fast becoming an airline I have to try. Business Class looks amazing, and the food presentation is second to none! Definitely beats any other airlines' offerings on a route like this! I love how they have menus for every flight, and address the menu with your name. How classy!

TK B777W is just magnificent....Trip well detailed and compiled, just enjoyed every bit of reading it...
The J Class of a B777, in my opinion seems much more comfortable than that of the A330. It seems more spacious unlike the one of the A330 which looks congested...

This is an excellent trip report from start to finish. Your pictures captured the essence of the trip and I feel like I was right there. You included all aspects of the trip and it was very well done. I especially liked your pictures of the airshow map in flight. I thought of the many places in Europe I have been to and it makes me want to go back.
I have never flown TK, although I have seen there 777-300ER in NRT many times. From your trip report, they sound like a truly great airline. Thank you again for an excellent trip report.

Hi Philip,
Thanks for bringing us this picturesque insight into the excellent airline that is TK. A top notch experience and indeed able of giving the Gulf State carriers a run for their money. The C class cabin looks modern and inviting, food is nicely presented and plentiful.
I think TK is definitely an excellent *A partner!

Quoting shamrock350 (Reply 27): Brilliant report Philip, every time I read one of yours I end up checking fares to try the featured airline myself, first it was Swiss, then it was getting back on board Bmi and now I find myself wanting to fly Turkish!
Hey Kev thanks for the reply.
Quoting shamrock350 (Reply 27): This level of service from TK came out of nowhere, at least I wasn't aware they were this good with their on board product and lounges!
True among the public people dont know much about them. I say it to my colleagues and friends and they look at me with surprise. I guess its a case of getting the news out there .
Quoting klkla (Reply 28): Thanks for such a detailed report. Probably the most detailed I have ever seen on this site. With all those pics I felt like I was there.
Many thanks for your reply much appreciated . Glad there were not too many photos.
Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 29): is TGS (Turkish Ground Services) are totally de-motivated since TK spun that off to somebody with low wages. I was recently denied boarding 25 min before dep, boarding pass clearly says "BOARDING ENDS 15 MIN BEFORE DEPARTURE". Protested and they moved me to the next day, and charged change fee
Sounds like a nightmare and to charge for it . Did you take this up with customer relations ?
Quoting lukeyboy95 (Reply 31): You did not disappoint on this trip report - a very enjoyable experience to share with you.
Particularly appropriate as I am of to YYZ in a week - though sadly on the marginally less glamorous Air Transat!
Hi Luke and thanks. Hope you enjoy Toronto and I look forward to hearing about it. Im interested to see what TS offer these days so dont forget
Quoting lukeyboy95 (Reply 31): I am not convinced that I love the OB Chef idea yet.
I have to say I like it but they dont do an awful lot in the cabin but behind the scenes I guess they instruct the crew?

The service looks incredible, especially with the onboard chef, however, the hardware (seat), although not bad, it is not the best out there, but still looks like a very good product.
However, the lounge, I'm simply amazed, that looks like the best lounge I have ever seen, with so much variety of services and catering. However, in peak times, how filled is it? Seems to be a smaller ratio of seats to area than most other lounges. Some lounges around the world are great, but at peak times seating can get a bit cramped, do you know how this lounge compares?
If I hadn't booked my summer trip to Europe already I might have considered taking TK. However, I might need to wait for next Christmas, but TK are definitely on my list of must-fly airlines.

Yes thats correct.

The whole design of the bag inside and out and the Bvlgari bits and pieces are missing in the Comfort class one. I thought the Y class also got these white ones. Could be wrong.

Quoting Babybus (Reply 69): Do you know what time approximately you passed overhead London?
Not sure to be honest. I wasnt paying that much attention. Plus I was quite tired.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 70): Saving the best for last! That’s why I kept your report for the weekend as I wanted to allow myself more time to read. Thank God, I did as this happens to be the most impressive and best written ever story of yours.
Arr Suryo thanks so much for your reply. I was looking forward to it I am pleased with this one and was so
looking forward to making it . I have not posted longhaul before so it was a new concept for me.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 70): It must have been an emotional one.
Indeed and a bit nervous for some reason but within minutes it was like me met only a week before.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 70): Nice recommendation. What about the breakfast offering?
I didnt take breakfast there so not sure what its like. Maybe P did on his stay there ?
Quoting akhmad (Reply 70): Hey, do I notice the missing nose carriage on the picture?
Haha at least mine didnt miss one
Quoting akhmad (Reply 70): How about spotting from the lounge?
I didnt notice sorry ! It was a short time there so was looking at the interior .
Quoting akhmad (Reply 70): A mini gym would be great. Oops! Am I too demanding?
Im sure one day someone will make that for you in a lounge.
Quoting photoshooter (Reply 71): yeah, I have to admit, I just LOVE reading your trip reports...

Great report, Phil! TK's J Class product is certainly impressive.
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): The B777 is my favourite aircraft compared to the A330 transatlantic. I know people argue
about the number of seats in a row but for me the spacious B777 in J is the clear winner.
I don't like the middle seat in TK's J Class cabin - imagine to be stuck there with both aisle seats being flat.
Quoting OA260 (Reply 4): And I am presented with a menu personalised with my name on it .
Very impressive!
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): Hmm must be for him or his son/daughter maybe

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): For longhaul travel I would certainly recommend Turkish Airlines. They will give the Gulf carriers a run for their money with a product like this.
But certain Gulf carriers have excellent J Class products, too. Just have a look at EK's A380 J Class or Oman Air's J Class. No middle seats in J Class.

True due to pre assigned seating I think anyone worried is safe to book a window on the block of two or an aisle. I guess if three people were travelling together they would like it. Families etc...

Indeed me included

Whats the price difference between the products? TK are offering some amazing J fares lately to compete with the Gulf carriers.

Hi Philip
Great job you've done there! It was like flying from YYZ to ATH as well.
TK seems to have an outsourcing product, standing way ahead of any of it's European competitors.
Unbelievable how much detail has been but in the product! Looks even better then some of the Gulf carriers.
Greetings
Marc

Hi Philip,
great tripreport! Your photos tell every detail of the wonderful service TK will give to their passengers. I love this airline, and they're the best in Europe without doubt (catering wise and hardware), usually with competitive pricing along.
The TK 77W toilet in J-class reminds me of those installed on the old JAL 744's which carried F class in the nose. Also great places to spend a little time during the flight.
Regards
Eric

Hi Marc , many thanks for the reply. Yes TK really are making a name for themselves.

Hi Eric ,
Many thanks for the reply . I agree they are a very good airline and offer a great product. So much so that if I wasnt taking an A3 direct flight from LHR id seriously consider TK DUB-IST-ATH in future. I would have to juggle between LX and TK though ofcourse
Quoting FlySSC (Reply 77): Funny to see the screen in ATH showing in Greek "Κωνσταντινούπολις" (Konstantinopolis), and "Istanbul" in English
Its a name that stems back to the history of when the Greeks were in Turkey and the Turks were in Greece. The Turks refer to Greece today as ''Yunanistan'' from the Ottoman Empire in Greece. The name ''Istanbul'' is from the Greek ''Stin Poli'' Which means ''In the City''. Its a conversation I have had with my very good Turkish friends whilst sipping a Turkish/Greek coffee and a piece of ( as the Greeks say )Loukoumi ( from the Turkish word Lokum ) or as is more widely known Turkish delight. I often say Yunanistan when Im in Turkey and when they ask me where my family are from . I have said Greece and they look at me puzzled. Im not bothered by these things in fact the links between Greek and Turkish history are something to celebrate and to help move us forward than to hold us back.
My local Marina where my family live is called Pasalimani from the Turkish Paşalimanı . When I was in Istanbul for a few days I bought my Aunt a lovely cashmere scalf and she was delighted. She was jealous that she couldnt come with me as she says she always feels at home in Istanbul and her soul is there. I feel at home in most countries like Turkey/Cyprus and indeed Lebanon. When I was growing up we had Lebanese friends and the culture was not foreign to us and the food and sweets were often over indulged in

Hi Philip,
What a great report you have written! I flew Turkish Airlines for the first time in February last year HEL-IST-DXB-IST-HEL (on the other side of the curtain though...) and I loved every moment of it. Seeing multiple advertisements about the "flying chef" that TK has I could only dream about J class. Your report really showed that Turkish Airlines are top notch - the new J class looks great, the food looks outstanding and well, it makes me regret I have no flights booked on TK at the moment.
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): I was quite impressed with the lounge . Lots of nice areas to chill out and plenty of food and drink.
I was about to say that judging your photos this statement really is true - but seeing the photos of the Istanbul lounge I'm stunned! That's the most luxurious airline lounge I've ever seen! Wow!
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): As soon as I entered the cabin I was welcomed and shown to my seat.
I love that Turkish Airlines logo on the wall at the back of the J cabin!
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): Shortly the onboard Chef came around and handed out chocolates :
There he is, the famous Chef!
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): I had one hour and 20 mintues connection in IST so didnt want any delays
in arriving.
Yeah, I really think Istanbul isn't the most comfortable transfer airport - on the way out I had to spend four hours there (without any lounge access) and I don't think I would do it again. On the other hand it is a whole different story with a lounge to visit.
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): Cherry juice the all time favourite of mine when flying on TK:
Okay, but what I really love is the TK nuts! I remember commenting to the FA on my HEL-IST flight about how delicious those nuts were - and well - for the rest of the flight I was overfed with those nuts. But the service was great!
Again thanks for showing us a glimpse of the Turkish Airlines world!

Yes TK are good in both J and Y and thats a nice credit to them .

Me too the whole cabin feels very classy and modern .
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 79): Again thanks for showing us a glimpse of the Turkish Airlines world!
Welcome Im sure we will see some more of TK in the future and that we will continue to watch their progress and enhancing their already great product.

Heya,
Wow, that was probably the most detailed trip report I have ever seen. Turkish seems like it has a very good product. I have never had the chance to fly with them, but who knows, maybe one day
The lounge in IST was nothing short of spectacular. Hope you enjoyed your Trip and I'm looking forward to many more.
Cheers
