Scandinavian Capital Hopping: ARN-OSL-ARN On SAS

This is a short tripreport covering my trip to Oslo I did on the fifth of January.

SAS used to send out a magazine called Seasons 4 times a year to their Eurobonus Silver and Gold members. In the late fall of 2011, SAS changed the name of this magazine to Eurobonus Traveler, this to celebrate the fact that Eurobonus as a Frequent Flyer programme will celebrate 20 years in April 2012.
Together with the first issue of Eurobonus Traveler, they included a lounge voucher which gave you one visit to a SAS Business lounge if you were traveling on a ticket with SK, KF or WF, where such a lounge is available. Me being a Eurobonus Silver member, I also received one of these vouchers.
The expiry date of this voucher was January 31st, and since I didn't have any SK flights planned before that date that would allow me to use the voucher, I decided to do a quick daytrip somewhere to take advantage it. Afterall, I had never visited a SAS lounge at all.

Before I made any booking, I asked my mother, who also had gotten a voucher, if she would be interested to join me in such a daytrip, and indeed she was interested.

My first idea was to go to SK's flagship lounge at CPH, or possibly OSL. Our choice fell on OSL for two reasons, my mother preferred to go there, and there were more availability of cheap tickets for OSL.
Once decided on OSL, I realized that I could combine this with a flight or two on SK's OSL based ex-Braathens 737 classics, in the -400 and -500 series. Two subtypes previously unflown by me.
After deciding on the date, January 5, I found cheap and suitable flights for us. We ended up booking two flights on 737-400's with some 2hr 40mins in OSL. The tickets were priced at about 50 EUR oneway per person.

A few days before departure, while checking the booking, I noticed the plane on the outbound leg had been changed to a 737-600. Bummer, as I have flown that type lots of times. Oh well, the return leg was still scheduled as a 737-400.

January 5

We arrived to ARN by car, my father was kind enough to drive us there.

I had already checked us in online the day before, so all we had to do was to print out our boarding passes, which was easily done at one of the self service kiosks.

The FIDS told us that our departure gate was 9, so off to the security checkpoint next to Sky City it is!

There were no queue and we were through in no time.

We headed to the Menzies Business lounge.

My mother got in for free, as she has a number of free lounge visits due to enough spending on her Diners Club card. We had to pay a guest fee for me at 16 EUR.

The lounge is decent, with sandwiches and snacks to eat. The drink section is limited to wine, beer, water, sodas and juices on tap.

After some quality time spent at the lounge, we headed to our gate, snapping some pictures of planes while heading there. As mentioned earlier, our flight to OSL left from gate 9, located at the end of the A-pier at ARN.

I walked down the jetway and was greeted by two female FA's. The crew for this flight consited of three old-ish women.

I settled down on my seat 21A. This bird was equipped with SK's newer kind of seats. They are rock hard and thin, and not that good legroom here in the back.

Luckily the aisle seat stays free when all passengers had boarded, so my mother moved to that seat and we were blessed with an empty middle seat. Making the comfort more bearable.

Soon the seatbelt sign is turned off and the crew start their BOB round minutes later. We didn't bother with it.
I remember reading last fall that SK would introduce free coffee for their economy passengers some time after new year. Apparently it hasn't happened yet, but let's hope they'll introduce it soon.

I noted that this OSL based plane had a separate folder for the Norwegian domestic BOB sortiment, the Swedish sortiment only has a page in the standard “Cloudshop” folder.

We took the stairs to up to the jetway and into the terminal we went.

The first thing I did was to take a look around the terminal. Last time I was here in OSL I was kind of in a hurry, ( see: SAS Longhaul: Stockholm To New York, With A Twist! (by deltamartin Nov 13 2011 in Trip Reports) ) so this time I could take my time. While I looked around, my mother decided to do some tax-free shopping. We were outside of EU after all.

Once we both were done with our respecitve errands, we decided to head to the SAS Business lounge, it was after all the purpose of our visit to OSL, so we couldn't spend too much time doing other stuff.

We showed our BP's and gave our vouchers to the lounge agent and we were let in without any problems.

The lounge was pretty nice. Nice and comfortable furniture, very IKEA. Ample seating.

They had a shelf with a lot of different In-flight magazines and different kind of folders from different parts of the SAS-group, a nice touch for us enthusiasts.

We spent the rest of our time in OSL in the lounge.

When our boarding time approached we started to head towards the gate. Gate 38 was assigned for our plane to Stockholm this afternoon.

Soon boarding was called, and we lined up to be let onboard.

In the middle of the boarding process an airport worker yelled at us in the queue to move to let her pass with a passenger in a wheelchair. I found this a bit odd, isn't it better for everyone involved to do that before or after boarding, and not in the middle of the general boarding?

Soon we reached the desk and the gate agent scanned our boarding passes and let us walk down the jetway.

Through the jetways glass wall I could see that the plane for the flight was LN-BRE, named Håkon V. Magnusson. If I'm not mistaken, these ex-Braathens birds are the only ones in the SAS mainline fleet without a “Viking” name, they inherited their old Braathens names instead.

As I enter the plane I was greeted by a female FA. The crew consisted of three females and one male. All rather old in usual SAS standards.

We found our seats, mine was 24A with my mother on the B seat. This time the aisle seat got occupied as well, so no extra space for us.

The old fashioned seat was rather comfortable, the legroom was acceptable, not that one requires that much for these kinds of short hops.

The takeoff roll was rather powerful and loud and and soon we were airborn. By this time it was almost dark already so I didn't manage to take many decent pictures.

The flight was pretty much like the outbound flight, a bog standard SK intra-Scandinavia flight. Once again we did not bother with the BOB.

We approached Arlanda and landed on runway 01L and taxied towards gate 7, next to the one we left this morning. I believe most of SK's intra-Scandinavia flights use these gates, a remainder of the SAS-Express concept I presume.

We walked through the terminal to the curbside where my father waited to pick us up, and our little trip to OSL came to an end.

To sum things up,

SAS provided two standard SK flights, on time, friendly crews and BOB service, not much to say there. The old 737-400 (this example manufactured in 1990) was in great condition, and so was the younger cousin we flew to get to OSL.
The lounge voucher was a really nice gesture from SAS for me as a EuroBonus Silver member, a status pretty much useless unless you often need to check in an additional bag.
The lounge itself was rather nice, would have liked something more substantial on offer but the pasta salad was decent.

OSL is a pretty nice airport with lots of glass walls and natural light. I have yet to be landside at OSL, so the only part I have ever visited there is the International Airside, so that's where my opinions are based.

My next report will cover my flights around the ARN A.net meet, including a very special flight on a Saab.

As a bonus, I have included a few pictures I took of the Antonov An-225 that landed at ARN when I was in OSL. It's a big bird.

Well considering your commutes to KRN, you've already quite a substantial amount of segments. So making EBG shouldn't be too hard, just book some extra last minute trips. Sometimes a 2 segment via CPH can cost as little as 659 SEK.

Interesting, so Swedish Diners no longer get the unlimited free lounge access?

Seemed like SK delivered their usual product. Nothing too special but at least they are consistent with that.

If I remember correctly there was indeed some shitty (pardon my French) weather on January 5th in the Netherlands. Lots if very strong winds that led to quite some delays at AMS.

That lounge does look nice. How does it compare to the lounges at CPH at ARN? I'm probably having a business class flight on LH leaving from CPH or ARN, so that would give me acces to the SK Business Lounges, if I'm not mistaken.

A nice gesture indeed. I'm a Flying Blue Silver, probably about the same as Eurobonus Silver. You get the basic perks such as business class check-in and security, priority boarding, bonus miles and some extra baggage allowance, but no lounge acces or a realistic chance of getting upgraded.

Actually my father got the magazine as he is a EBS member, but he had no use of the lounge, nor did he bother to do a daytrip just for the sake of visiting a lounge, so he gave the voucher to my mother.

Yeah, it's not a bad lounge. The Scandinavian "inner sanctum" is a bit better with a far more extensive drink selection, pretty much the same food offerings and a little classier decor. You could've just gone there, I've never seen anybody controlling the access apart from the reception desk of both lounges.

Thanks for this nice report, as usual. You had the perfect excuse for a daytrip, some lounging and your mother wanting to come along is great as well. I think she sure must be allright with your plane ‘obsession’  . A small put off on the outbound changing to a 736 but aircraft changes seem to be common with SAS as well. I like the newer seats on the 736 and good you had that middle seat free; makes all the difference.

Well, after all my mother did use to work for SAS, but she never got to use any of their lounges, so I believe she was rather curious how those lounges were like.

Well, as of this weekend I have now tried 2 of those three, and a KF flight is in the pipeline.

Nope, since both of our flights were scheduled on the ex-Braathens birds, which are all based in OSL, there were OSL-based crew on both flights, and my mother were based at ARN during her entire SAS career.

Yes, I could have stayed in the cockpit for landing at ARN but unfortunately, I thought I had to go back to my seat......so I left the cockpit just as we passed Skarholmen.....

The seats on the 734 haven't changed since 2001, although the covers/materials have. One thing I've always wondered - what are/were the grey rectangles above the tray-tables for? They were there in 2001 also, then empty too... Can somebody enlighten me, please?

I know this is a bit off-topic, but talking about KF and SK, SAS will stop flying ARN-HEL and CPH-HEL starting March. From there on all flights are transferred to Blue1. So your chances to get a 717 ride are getting bigger and bigger!

Last time I was in Oslo I didn't manage to try it out because I only had 15 minutes between arriving from ZRH and continuing on to ARN. I do collect aircraft models and certain safety cards and magazines, mainly from airlines that will disappear, that's why I have the bmi and LH Italia safety card. I don't really collect much beyond that though.

The lounge is decent, with sandwiches and snacks to eat. The drink section is limited to wine, beer, water, sodas and juices on tap.

A very standard lounge, but as you say indeed the apron views are nice.
