A.net meeting in snowy Tallinn. U2/FR STN-TLL-LTN
Back in October I was asked by FlyingFinn76 if I was interested joining a few other a.netters on a winter trip to Stockholm. I liked the idea of meeting a few other a.netters, but Stockholm didn’t tickle my fancy at all. Expensive pints make me angry. Thankfully, a side trip for the Saturday was organised to Tallinn in neighbouring Estonia. Now, this was more like it. A cheaper, more pretty destination that I had been hoping for an excuse to get back to.
As I was trying to save money for my upcoming African trip, I limited my flight choices to no-frills airlines. Thankfully mid-January London-Tallinn flights are cheap. I booked a one way easyJet STN-TLL flight for GBP 26, and return on Ryanair TLL-LTN for GBP 21. Not bad. A nice 3/4* hotel in Tallinn’s UNESCO Old Town was booked for GBP 38 including breakfast.
This weekend’s map:
I decided to forego the expensive train connections, and took the easyBus service from Baker Street for GBP 5. I was a bit unsure of the time keeping of the bus, but was delighted that instead of the scheduled 1 hour 20 minutes, we arrive exactly an hour after leaving Baker Street.
On the easyBus to STN
Nice sunny day to fly – walking to the nice terminal
I took advantage of flying on easyJet (rather than Ryanair) and got a proper boarding card from an empty check in desk. I was told the load for today was 126 out of 156 – not full, but much busier than I was expecting. I also asked how much Speedy Boarding was – a shocking GBP 13.50 to board first??!? No thanks!
There was only a small queue at security (of course more inexperienced travellers). The departure lounge at STN is very nice – spacious and light. To avoid the extorninate prices on board, I headed over to Boots, and got a bottle of their sparkling flavoured water for GBP 0.65 – tasty and a bargain.

I took a seat and waited for my gate to show.
As expected, we were given a gate in the satellite building, requiring a transit journey.

We headed through a rather thick dark cloud, and ended up popping out over Tallinn
Touchdown was a few minutes late in a gloriously snowy Tallinn.

Disembarkation was via airbirdge, and before long I was walking towards immigration
Immigration was swift, and with no luggage to collect I was shortly in a taxi. Time from plane to curb just 6 minutes.
After s hort journey, I was dropped off my my hotel in the Old Town
After dropping off my stuff I went out in search of the other a.netters that had arrived on an earlier OV flight from ARN.
A few evening photos of Tallinn – simply gorgeous in the snow. I guess the Christmas tree is still there due to the differences in the Orthodox Christmas. It made the pictures better at any rate!
After a great night out with the lads, I had enough time for a quick stroll around town before heading to the airport for my lunchtime flight home.
Another short taxi ride later and I was back in the terminal. My last time in TLL 18 month earlier was a much calmer affair. Today, however, the place was packed.

Upon boarding I was delighted to see the exit rows still empty. I asked the FA standing there if I could sit there, but she said I couldn’t unless I had a boarding pass saying I had one of those….Huh? It turns out just a few days before my flight FR had introduced “reserved” seating. Those with priority boarding passes are allowed in rows 1,2 and the exit rows. Shame I didn’t know about it in advance or else I would have bought reserved seats. EUR 5 seemed like a bargain to get an empty exit row on a full flight. In the end no one sat in those seats during the flight.

There was quite a queue for immigration, although the line moved quickly.

I hope you enjoyed reading.
My next trip is a rather mammoth trip to Africa at the end of the week. The routing currently is LHR-CMN-LIS-BRU- BJM-KGL-EBB-ADD-DAR-ZNZ,DAR-NBO-ZRH-ATH-LCA-LHR, mostly in Business class. Exciting! Expect some trip reports!

Hi Gabriel,
Sound's like you had 2 pretty decent & cheap flights with U2 & FR. Tallinn looks like a pretty cool place though I don't think the weather would be my cuppa tea.
Thanks for sharing & I am looking forward to your African reports.

Hi Gabriel!
Another nice report!
I too was on the A.net meet, and on that OV flight to TLL, I was leaving TLL to HEL on AY/BE about the same time as you arrived though, too bad we couldn't meet!
Now that's an interesting marketing gimmick. Offer the pax cheap transfers to the airport. It actually makes sense to fly LCCs then. Wish more faux airlines would come up with a similar idea.

Wow, I had no idea any item in any airport in the known world could be priced that cheap. I assume it was courtesy of the weak economy? Thank you Mr. Cameron

Nothing to do with a weak economy. Just a special deal.

No, it's free seating, although they are trialling assignsed seating.

Man, I'd love to visit the Baltic capital cities one day (only been to Vilnius). As for the Christmas tree: Technically it's the Old-Calendrists that have a late Christmas not the Orthodox Christians as a whole (even though the Old-Calendrists are Orthodox). There are many Orthodox (see Greece, Bulgaria and elsewhere) that celebrate Christmas on Dec 25. Not important (I am not even religious), I just wanted to point it out.

Ryanair loves to blow its own horn like noone else in the aviation world, no doubt about that

Hi Gabriel!
It was great to meet over the weekend in TLL, thanks for a good time.
Also interesting to read experience on floghts flights, another different view! Seemingly U2 did ok and nice to score an exit row. About FR, not sure. I think it is a compulsory item to have 2 people seated at the emergency exit seats to be able to open the hatches in case of evacuation. They can have new selling points, but this seems a safety issue as well... Maybe something to look up?
Good pics, nice sunset too! That Christmas tree only looked much better in the evening

Hi!
Just wanted to say many thanks for the trip report. It was slightly different from your usual reports in that there were no business class lounges and gin and tonics! But some great shots of the terminals and in flight and of course Tallinn. I would really like to make it to Tallinn especially as there are good cheap flight options from London. I went to Bratislava with Ryanair a couple of times and loved the place.

TLL has been high on my to visit list too, but it has to wait till Summer...will probably fly the non-stop Bombardier flight of OV instead of a LCC

Cash is easier to pay with than card at U2, so a contrast to the US!

Do it! I flew TLL-ARN on one of the CRJ900's and loved it. If anything the flight was too short for me. OV are a great little airline. On the other hand I imagine it might be a bit cramped if the flight was full, but I had a free seat next to me so it was good.
Gabriel, was awesome to meet you. Matt and I were in the terminal at the same time you were and we tried to make it down to your gate before we realised you had to go through passport control. Anyway, we saw you taxi out and takeoff from our gate. In fact you got a photo of the OV 737 being de-iced that was at a neighbouring gate, and I was getting some shots of it. I think Matt got a couple of shots of you on the runway.
Good luck on your African trip! No doubt next you'll be going to Somalia or some equivalent!

Really nice to see some pictures from Tallin. Looks so good with the snow around and still some christmas decorations.
I'm glad all went to plan for you and you had a good night with the lads. Lots of booze judging by the looks on some of the faces Sunday morning.
As for the flights, well, U2 seem to be quite acceptable here aside from the rip-off speedy boarding price. That really is astonishing. FR, well the style is slightly below easyJet as we know. But, you got a good price both directions. I just dont really like the hanging around on a flight of stairs while the plane pulls in.

Hi Gab,
Good to see your report up, was certainly great hooking up again, if only for such a short period! I'm amazed at what a difference there's between the almost summery weather in the UK and the full winter (although still warmer than is the norm) in Tallinn!
Look forward to another meet, in Berlin at the latest!
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): Back in October I was asked by FlyingFinn76 if I was interested joining a few other a.netters on a winter trip to Stockholm. A cheaper, more pretty destination that I had been hoping for an excuse to get back to.
Hmm, you put it in a bit different terms before: "peer pressure" was among the terms used...

I was a bit unsure of the time keeping of the bus, but was delighted that instead of the scheduled 1 hour 20 minutes, we arrive exactly an hour after leaving Baker Street.
The easyBus isn't bad if you can score one of the cheaper tickets. Of course it being London and an automobile you are subject to traffic in the city, the M25 and whatever is the designation for the motorway up to Stansted but looks like that Saturday you were pretty lucky. I think it took around 1h30mins when I took it a couple of years ago...
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): , but much busier than I was expecting. I also asked how much Speedy Boarding was – a shocking GBP 13.50 to board first??!?
I've never understood why easyJet keeps gouging so much money for it? Sure, you get a dedicated check in desk (pretty much useless as you have OLCI anyway) - maybe they could split it into two - a cheaper fee for priority boarding and another fee for the works including priority check in (kinda like airBaltic). I find the 4-5 EUR Ryanair charges for priority boarding to be fair.
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): The number of people turning up at the gate grew slowly, and thankfully, everyone was calm, and sitting down, rather than hanging around like vultures.
See, this is the difference between Ezy and Ryan - both are cheap but only Ezy is civilized.
I wonder why they don't lease those planes to other carriers instead of letting them sit there. Or maybe they are targeting the lucrative last minute leases, like the famous BA strikes of yesteryear when FR operated a number of routes for them...
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): .Huh? It turns out just a few days before my flight FR had introduced “reserved” seating. Those with priority boarding passes are allowed in rows 1,2 and the exit rows.
Really? I didn't know that! Then again I haven't flown FR since July. Good to know anyway, I think I might end up with them in May again, need to save some money and they are offering a quite tempting option...
