Hello and welcome to my report. I had been working hard all Summer and lots of overtime was available at work. I decided to take advantage of it and some weeks I was working 66 hours. It was a great way to boost my vacation fund and also to earn extra annual leave. I started to plan my Winter trip and decided to take a month off. The funds from the overtime allowed me to book and pay for whatever flights I wanted and also to treat myself to some luxury goods. I bought myself a iMac/iPhone 4S and a 50'' 3D TV so at least I could see the fruits of my labour. Of course the Irish tax man was pleased too One week they got EUR300 in taxes from me but I guess at least Im doing my bit for the country
With all my flights/hotels booked the weeks flew and soon it was time to leave the Emerald Isle in search of warmer climates. Fellow Anetter and friend Gareth was to keep me company on the DUB-FRA-MIA sector and then fly back right away . Any excuse for a A380 trip huh Gareth In fairness this was my first longhaul and trip to the USA in years so I was a bit nervous dont ask me why so I was glad Gareth would be coming with me .
My last day at work was great I said goodbye to all my colleagues who wished they were coming with me. I promised to keep them updated on FB and that I would see them in a month.
The plan for Gareth and I was to stay at the Airport hotel as we decided to take the new early morning flight with LH from DUB-FRA. The morning of the 23rd November I took the bus mid morning to Dublin Airport. Gareth was working and not arriving til that evening so I checked in and had arranged to meet another fellow Irish Anetter to go spotting. Something that I never do so was looking forward to it . We met up at Terminal 2 and walked round to the perimeter road. We spent a few hours there spotting amongst others EI A330 TK A319 IB CRJ etc... After a while we headed back to T2 for a hot drink to warm up and then it was time to say goodbye.
Later that evening Gareth arrived and we went for something to eat before getting some sleep .

AIRLINE : LUFTHANSA
ROUTE : DUB - FRA
FLIGHT : LH 983
CLASS : BUSINESS
SEAT : 1A ( Moved onboard )
AIRCRAFT : AIRBUS A321
REG : D - AIRR
Gareth and I checked in at the Business Class desk and tagged our bags to FRA.
We were spending a night in FRA to see the Christmas markets so we couldnt check them to MIA. We then made our way to the BMI Lounge to relax before the flight.
Soon it was time to board the flight so we made our way to the B Gates .
We were waiting to board when we saw the gate agents chatting and on the phones. It seemed there was a problem with the aircraft and they then made an announcement that further information would be available at a later time. Being used to these things Gareth and I looked at eachother and thought ''oh here we go '' lol.....
Checking on my iPhone Star Alliance App and on the LH iPad App the news didnt get any better. We decided to head back to the BMI Lounge as we were not going anywhere soon.
We were welcomed back in by the friendly lounge agent who also asked us if we would like a drinks/meal voucher. Gareth and I said yes and we decided to go back to T2 to my favourite place the Chocolate Lounge. The Lounge agent was so kind and said to give her our mobiles so she could call us if we were suddenly boarding. We both thought that this was a nice personal gesture.
So Gareth and I made our way to T2 and placed our order.
Christmas Toffee muffins yummm
Soon after we had got stuck into our items we got a call from the lounge agent to advise we would be boarding soon so we made our way back to the lounge to get our bags and head to the gate. I said to Gareth that I wanted to get the girl in the lounge something for her kindness so I bought her a Christmas muffin.
We walked briskly to the lounge and thanked the girl for what she did and I gave her the muffin. She was so surprised and was really touched. She said she would save it until she got home and make a nice cup of tea.
We boarded and were welcomed onboard.
Old style interior but pleasant all the same.
Soon we pushed back and time to make our way to the runway .
We took over and soon we left the coast or Ireland. I would be gone for longest time in over 10 years.
Soon after take off the meal service began. This was ok but a nice hot meal such as eggs etc.. would be
nicer.
Still the Apple Juice and Coffee was decent .
I love these postcards that LH produce.
We slept for the rest of the flight and soon it was time to land into FRA. Gareth informed me we were landing on the new runway .
We disembarked via stairs so although very cold was a good chance to get pictures.

Soon we were at the baggage reclaim and our bags were off in no time. We made our way to the subway to take the train to Frankfurt HBF. We were staying at the InterCity hotel which is right next to the HBF and a decent enough hotel.
That night we decided to visit the Christmas markets and was something we were looking forward to . We were not dissapointed either. The whole thing got me in the Christmas mood.
Gareth twisted my arm and we indulged in some health food lol...
This stuff could knock you out !
How long to walk or run this off ?
Soon it was time to leave after having a really nice time. We had to get some sleep for the long journey ahead the next morning.
I woke up early and gave a call to Gareth in his room to make sure we were both ready to leave. We made our way to the HBF and took the train to FRA .

Then a quick walk and somw different angles to shoot.
Soon time to take a look at the menu :
Pre lunch drinks :
Starter which was very nice .
Main course which was very nice. Gareth had built up a rapport with the crew and we had a good chat I think they appeciated the fact we made an effort to interact with them and it was nice to hear their stories as I had told them I was going on a cruise. Gareth speaks fluent German so that also helped. The male FA was from Turkey and even impressed me with some Greek

Gareth gave up his window seat to me
Welcome to Miami
We pulled up on stand . Two last shots of the Business cabin and we thanked the crew for their wonderful service.
As we disembarked Gareth asked if we could see the F Class cabin to which we were granted access :
Maybe next time
We made our way to the baggage reclaim the bags were not long coming off and soon we cleared customs and were on our way again .
Gareth was staying overnight at the MIA Airport hotel before flying back to Dublin the next day so I went with him to check in before we went to get some food :
Has to be done :
Soon after Gareth walked with me to the Terminal where my next flight was departing . I checked in and said goodbye to Gareth before going through security.
So thats the end of this part of my travels. I have to say it was a great trip with LH depsite the delay at DUB which was beyond LH's control. They handled it well and I was just glad we were not connecting the same day to MIA. The bonus of a stop in FRA to see the Xmas markets was really nice and added another thrill to the trip.
Onboard LH DUB-FRA was ok but a hot meal option would be good , it doesnt have to be big just scrambled eggs and hot croissants etc...
The lounges at FRA were great and I was pleased with them.
Onboard FRA-MIA great crew and great service. The food was ample and the seat was comfortable. I do feel its time for LH to upgrade their J class to proper flatbeds though. They need to keep up to date with airlines such as TK . The A380 well what can I say it was my third time on one and I will always choose this for longhaul where available.
Thanks for reading and I appreciate all your comments as usual.
Regards
Philip / OA260

Hey Philip, fantastic report. I was really looking forward to this one.
Seems like LH deliver a great Business Class product on the A380. Apart from the starters being served on a tray without the linen (just a small detail, nothing big) everything else looked fantastic. I was a bit surprised to see the dessert cart so well stocked, and with everything so nicely presented.
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): One week they got EUR300 in taxes from me but I guess at least Im doing my bit for the country
Well, I suppose the tax man would also be happy for us Swedes who give away a little bit of our hard worked salary to the Irish government
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): We checked in at the First Class area and then our way to Mc Donalds.
Micky Dee's?? Why? Isn't there much better food in the lounge, and on the plane? See no point to get stuffed on that then, especially for a weight conscious man like yourself
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): the flight was going really fast and I had been dreading the 10 hours but it was pleasant.
Yes, that's the sad thing about long haul flights, they're always too short. Can't wait till the Kangoroo route goes non-stop

Hi Phil
what an amazing report about LHs long haul product.
The seat looks not really on par with the latest lie-flat models, but the service seems to be nice.
Great to see a MIA report, as I have been there in summer on LX.
Thanks a lot for sharing this great read

What a great summary of our trip. It was fabulous! I'll have to post my report from the return legs now. Hopefully I'll get around to it this weekend.
I agree with all of your observations. LH short-haul was pretty poor but the lounges and the long-haul flight were excellent. I wasn't impressed with the seats though. I know you managed to get a bit of sleep but I couldn't sleep at all due to the slope. I slept much better on my return leg but that was to be expected. Lol!!
Thanks again for documenting this trip so well. I know my return leg isn't going to be up to the same standard but hopefully it'll be acceptable.
Looking forward to our next adventure together!

Hello Philip,
Very good that you finally got your deserved holiday after working many days and long hours. You treated yourself right it seems! The A380 is a good aircraft on long haul, mainly for me because it's so quiet inside. That can make all the difference after some hours.
I wonder why LH sends their A380 to MIA. Must be a popular route. Do they have several departures a day?

Hola Philip!
Thanks for publishing this informative report on your well deserved vacation this winter after
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): some weeks I was working 66 hours. It was a great way to boost my vacation fund and also to earn extra annual leave
which you really deserved of course... and being an a.netter you chose a great way to spend some of it.
Despite the delay LH seemed to handle it pretty well, I wonder what happened to all those having connections at FRA that very morning. The attendant at the lounge was a real bless and very kind, nice to give her a muffin... seeing your dietary pattern, , it seems a nice gesture.
I cannot agree more on this comment:
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): This was OK but a nice hot meal such as eggs etc.. would be nicer.
I have always thought the same on the BCN-FRA/MUC legs, they give you a cold meal, which is not the most appropriate in winter months.... anyway, nice presentation.
BTW, the load factor on the DUB-FRA leg seemed not to be very high... I wonder why they use an A321 on that hop, probably the night flight to DUB is much more consistent.
FRA Christmas market looks very nice despite being FRA not such an interesting city. Thanks for the pictures.
FRA is an interesting airport, I have always liked it. Didn't you get lost with so many lounges to choose from? Did you sample the food and drinks in all of them?
The A380 is an amazing plane, I have yet to fly one but from your pictures I guess LH would get my business the first time I fly one... it looks impressive. LH C seat is not the very best out there, you are right on that, but it is comfortable on sitting ands relaxing positions, sleeping is another story.
The service seems one of the great assets of LH and it really shows in your pictures... nice presentation and great food offerings, I do really enjoy it every time I take them for long haul.
The IFE is as well a great feature and plenty to choose from, not a moment of boredom when on the plane. I like the new map they feature on this plane... really great feature.
Last but not least,
Quoting OA260 (Reply 1): we indulged in some health food
Quoting ROGERBCN (Reply 17): Despite the delay LH seemed to handle it pretty well
Indeed Roger they have handled my last two issues very well.
Quoting ROGERBCN (Reply 17): I have always thought the same on the BCN-FRA/MUC legs, they give you a cold meal, which is not the most appropriate in winter months..
Yes I agree they could offer something hot as a choice for those that want it. Im not into this cold stuff
Quoting ROGERBCN (Reply 17): BTW, the load factor on the DUB-FRA leg seemed not to be very high... I wonder why they use an A321 on that hop, probably the night flight to DUB is much more consistent.
Yes I noticed that also. The inbound the night before seemed full as I looked it up . I guess the morning is popular on certain days and periods. My date was not that peak really.
Quoting ROGERBCN (Reply 17): Didn't you get lost with so many lounges to choose from? Did you sample the food and drinks in all of them?
Not really the best ones we went too.
Quoting ROGERBCN (Reply 17): What has happened to the healthy Mediterranean diet? Too many years out of Greece....???
Haha like I said everything in moderation . Im back to healthy for another few weeks .
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 18): nice report about your LH A380 experience. But you included too many pictures this time IMO.
Thanks glad you liked it . Well it was on the border line but I like to give a total experience which many appreciate so I had to include what I thought told my story best. I always re size them so people with slower / older PC's and broadband speeds dont have too much hassle loading them . My style is lots of photos and thats what makes my TRs mine . I try to be myself
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 18): The problem is the seat pitch alone - otherwise it would be okay.
Not for me thank you . As I said I dont like longhaul I did that from the age of 16-30 where I was longhaul most months. I am more into shorter flights now and if they are long Id rather save up and just do longhaul once a yearin J . I find it too much hassle otherwise.
Good to know shame it wasnt in place for the A380 but hope they will upgrade them to keep up with their competition Im sure LH wont want an inconsistent product for too long?
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): In fairness this was my first longhaul and trip to the USA in years so I was a bit nervous dont ask me why
I flew long-haul several times, but a trip to the USA would make me nervous as well.
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter): After a while we headed back to T2 for a hot drink to warm up
At Chocolate Lounge, I assume.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): Gareth and you were undoubtedly the most favorite passengers of the flight.
Yeah we're both of the opinion that being nice to the crew really pays dividends. Being able to converse with them in German also helps a great deal as they don't expect an English native speaker to know their language. Lol!!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): One good turn deserved another.
Yep. I was more than happy to take a few pictures for Philip. I think my shots came out quite well.
It wasn't an entirely selfless move. I was fleeing a little unwell as I'd got very hot by the window so I moved to thje aisle where it was cooler. That was my only complaint about the A380, the fact that it didn't have individual air vents which I find almost essential when flying. My loss was Philip's gain though so I wasn't too worried overall. The tail camera gives a great view even if you don't have a window.
I'm sure Philip will be along soon to respond to the rest of your kind reply.
