Hello and welcome to my report. I had been working hard all Summer and lots of overtime was available at work. I decided to take advantage of it and some weeks I was working 66 hours. It was a great way to boost my vacation fund and also to earn extra annual leave. I started to plan my Winter trip and decided to take a month off. The funds from the overtime allowed me to book and pay for whatever flights I wanted and also to treat myself to some luxury goods. I bought myself a iMac/iPhone 4S and a 50'' 3D TV so at least I could see the fruits of my labour. Of course the Irish tax man was pleased too   One week they got EUR300 in taxes from me but I guess at least Im doing my bit for the country

With all my flights/hotels booked the weeks flew and soon it was time to leave the Emerald Isle in search of warmer climates. Fellow Anetter and friend Gareth was to keep me company on the DUB-FRA-MIA sector and then fly back right away . Any excuse for a A380 trip huh Gareth   In fairness this was my first longhaul and trip to the USA in years so I was a bit nervous dont ask me why so I was glad Gareth would be coming with me .

My last day at work was great I said goodbye to all my colleagues who wished they were coming with me. I promised to keep them updated on FB and that I would see them in a month.

The plan for Gareth and I was to stay at the Airport hotel as we decided to take the new early morning flight with LH from DUB-FRA. The morning of the 23rd November I took the bus mid morning to Dublin Airport. Gareth was working and not arriving til that evening so I checked in and had arranged to meet another fellow Irish Anetter to go spotting. Something that I never do so was looking forward to it . We met up at Terminal 2 and walked round to the perimeter road. We spent a few hours there spotting amongst others EI A330 TK A319 IB CRJ etc... After a while we headed back to T2 for a hot drink to warm up and then it was time to say goodbye.

Later that evening Gareth arrived and we went for something to eat before getting some sleep .

We were spending a night in FRA to see the Christmas markets so we couldnt check them to MIA. We then made our way to the BMI Lounge to relax before the flight.

Soon it was time to board the flight so we made our way to the B Gates .

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/LH380/file-23.jpg

We were waiting to board when we saw the gate agents chatting and on the phones. It seemed there was a problem with the aircraft and they then made an announcement that further information would be available at a later time. Being used to these things Gareth and I looked at eachother and thought ''oh here we go '' lol.....

Checking on my iPhone Star Alliance App and on the LH iPad App the news didnt get any better. We decided to head back to the BMI Lounge as we were not going anywhere soon.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/LH380/file-24.jpg

We were welcomed back in by the friendly lounge agent who also asked us if we would like a drinks/meal voucher. Gareth and I said yes and we decided to go back to T2 to my favourite place the Chocolate Lounge. The Lounge agent was so kind and said to give her our mobiles so she could call us if we were suddenly boarding. We both thought that this was a nice personal gesture.

So Gareth and I made our way to T2 and placed our order.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/LH380/file-33.jpg

Soon after we had got stuck into our items we got a call from the lounge agent to advise we would be boarding soon so we made our way back to the lounge to get our bags and head to the gate. I said to Gareth that I wanted to get the girl in the lounge something for her kindness so I bought her a Christmas muffin.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/LH380/file-34.jpg

We walked briskly to the lounge and thanked the girl for what she did and I gave her the muffin. She was so surprised and was really touched. She said she would save it until she got home and make a nice cup of tea.  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/LH380/file-35.jpg

We boarded and were welcomed onboard.

nicer.

Soon we were at the baggage reclaim and our bags were off in no time. We made our way to the subway to take the train to Frankfurt HBF. We were staying at the InterCity hotel which is right next to the HBF and a decent enough hotel.

That night we decided to visit the Christmas markets and was something we were looking forward to . We were not dissapointed either. The whole thing got me in the Christmas mood.

Soon it was time to leave after having a really nice time. We had to get some sleep for the long journey ahead the next morning.

I woke up early and gave a call to Gareth in his room to make sure we were both ready to leave. We made our way to the HBF and took the train to FRA .

Soon it was time to board and we made our way to the Upper deck. We were greeted and shown to our seats by friendly FA's.

Main course which was very nice. Gareth had built up a rapport with the crew and we had a good chat I think they appeciated the fact we made an effort to interact with them and it was nice to hear their stories as I had told them I was going on a cruise. Soon after Gareth walked with me to the Terminal where my next flight was departing . I checked in and said goodbye to Gareth before going through security.

So thats the end of this part of my travels. I have to say it was a great trip with LH depsite the delay at DUB which was beyond LH's control. They handled it well and I was just glad we were not connecting the same day to MIA. The bonus of a stop in FRA to see the Xmas markets was really nice and added another thrill to the trip.

Onboard LH DUB-FRA was ok but a hot meal option would be good , it doesnt have to be big just scrambled eggs and hot croissants etc...

The lounges at FRA were great and I was pleased with them.

Onboard FRA-MIA great crew and great service. The food was ample and the seat was comfortable. I do feel its time for LH to upgrade their J class to proper flatbeds though. They need to keep up to date with airlines such as TK . The A380 well what can I say it was my third time on one and I will always choose this for longhaul where available.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate all your comments as usual.

Regards

Philip / OA260

Hey Philip, fantastic report. I was really looking forward to this one.

Seems like LH deliver a great Business Class product on the A380. Apart from the starters being served on a tray without the linen (just a small detail, nothing big) everything else looked fantastic. I was a bit surprised to see the dessert cart so well stocked, and with everything so nicely presented.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
One week they got EUR300 in taxes from me but I guess at least Im doing my bit for the country

Well, I suppose the tax man would also be happy for us Swedes who give away a little bit of our hard worked salary to the Irish government
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
We checked in at the First Class area and then our way to Mc Donalds.

Micky Dee's?? Why? Isn't there much better food in the lounge, and on the plane? See no point to get stuffed on that then, especially for a weight conscious man like yourself

Hi Phil

what an amazing report about LHs long haul product.
The seat looks not really on par with the latest lie-flat models, but the service seems to be nice.
Great to see a MIA report, as I have been there in summer on LX.
Thanks a lot for sharing this great read
Cheers

What a great summary of our trip. It was fabulous! I'll have to post my report from the return legs now. Hopefully I'll get around to it this weekend.

I agree with all of your observations. LH short-haul was pretty poor but the lounges and the long-haul flight were excellent. I wasn't impressed with the seats though. I know you managed to get a bit of sleep but I couldn't sleep at all due to the slope. I slept much better on my return leg but that was to be expected. Lol!!

Thanks again for documenting this trip so well. I know my return leg isn't going to be up to the same standard but hopefully it'll be acceptable.

Looking forward to our next adventure together!

Hello Philip,

Very good that you finally got your deserved holiday after working many days and long hours. You treated yourself right it seems! The A380 is a good aircraft on long haul, mainly for me because it's so quiet inside. That can make all the difference after some hours.
I wonder why LH sends their A380 to MIA. Must be a popular route. Do they have several departures a day?

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
We walked briskly to the lounge and thanked the girl for what she did and I gave her the muffin. She was so surprised and was really touched. She said she would save it until she got home and make a nice cup of tea.

You're a true gentleman

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
How long to walk or run this off ?

Quite some miles to burn for these and for the fries as well methinks.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
I have to agree with other people that I would not want to do a long flight in this cabin. It was very packed.

Well, if I were to take this flight, that's the cabin where I'd spend my time on board

Hola Philip!

Thanks for publishing this informative report on your well deserved vacation this winter after

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
some weeks I was working 66 hours. It was a great way to boost my vacation fund and also to earn extra annual leave

which you really deserved of course... and being an a.netter you chose a great way to spend some of it.

Despite the delay LH seemed to handle it pretty well, I wonder what happened to all those having connections at FRA that very morning. The attendant at the lounge was a real bless and very kind, nice to give her a muffin... seeing your dietary pattern,  , it seems a nice gesture.

I cannot agree more on this comment:

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
This was OK but a nice hot meal such as eggs etc.. would be nicer.

I have always thought the same on the BCN-FRA/MUC legs, they give you a cold meal, which is not the most appropriate in winter months.... anyway, nice presentation.

BTW, the load factor on the DUB-FRA leg seemed not to be very high... I wonder why they use an A321 on that hop, probably the night flight to DUB is much more consistent.

FRA Christmas market looks very nice despite being FRA not such an interesting city. Thanks for the pictures.

FRA is an interesting airport, I have always liked it. Didn't you get lost with so many lounges to choose from? Did you sample the food and drinks in all of them?

The A380 is an amazing plane, I have yet to fly one but from your pictures I guess LH would get my business the first time I fly one... it looks impressive. LH C seat is not the very best out there, you are right on that, but it is comfortable on sitting ands relaxing positions, sleeping is another story.
The service seems one of the great assets of LH and it really shows in your pictures... nice presentation and great food offerings, I do really enjoy it every time I take them for long haul.

The IFE is as well a great feature and plenty to choose from, not a moment of boredom when on the plane. I like the new map they feature on this plane... really great feature.

Last but not least,

Quoting OA260 (Reply 1):
we indulged in some health food
Quoting OA260 (Reply 6):
Has to be done

What has happened to the healthy Mediterranean diet? Too many years out of Greece....???

Salut!

Thanks glad you liked it . Well it was on the border line but I like to give a total experience which many appreciate so I had to include what I thought told my story best. I always re size them so people with slower / older PC's and broadband speeds dont have too much hassle loading them . My style is lots of photos and thats what makes my TRs mine . Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 18):

Not for me thank you . As I said I dont like longhaul I did that from the age of 16-30 where I was longhaul most months. I am more into shorter flights now and if they are long Id rather save up and just do longhaul once a yearin J . I find it too much hassle otherwise.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 18):
The new 748s will have them.

Good to know shame it wasnt in place for the A380 but hope they will upgrade them to keep up with their competition Im sure LH wont want an inconsistent product for too long?

Yeah we're both of the opinion that being nice to the crew really pays dividends. Being able to converse with them in German also helps a great deal as they don't expect an English native speaker to know their language. Lol!!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 20):
One good turn deserved another.

Yep. I was more than happy to take a few pictures for Philip. I think my shots came out quite well.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 20):
Good move, Gareth!

It wasn't an entirely selfless move. I was fleeing a little unwell as I'd got very hot by the window so I moved to thje aisle where it was cooler. That was my only complaint about the A380, the fact that it didn't have individual air vents which I find almost essential when flying. My loss was Philip's gain though so I wasn't too worried overall. The tail camera gives a great view even if you don't have a window.

I'm sure Philip will be along soon to respond to the rest of your kind reply.

Hi Phil,

excellent as usual!

When I saw the photo of the Chocolate Lounge, but no visit, I wondered what was happening! Then, luckily you got to return to it   A very nice touch to get something for the lounge attendant, at lot of people don't appreciate those who go above and beyond.

A shame about the delay, it appeared to be handled well, but it would have been nice to stay in bed a bit longer!

The Christmas markets look good, how did the Currywurst compare to others?   I went looking for those markets, I found some but I'm not convinced it was the same market as you!

And finally, the main event. LH's C product looks fantastic, attentive service, comfy seats, and good preparations for the flight in the lounges. The ammenity kit presentation looks good in the tin. Food looks delicious (but then I find almost any airline meal to be tasty!). The route accross the Atlantic does look to be a more southerly route than normal - perhaps due to winds?

I hope you had a great time in the USA, and looking forward to the next part!

Thanks again,

Great report Phil, amazing pictures!

I miss the Christmas market in FRA. I used to go there every year; however, with recent moves all around the world this is something I missed to do for more than three years now   thanks for the pics, atleast the memories brought some warm smiles into my heart

Interesting fact that they tagged your bags in DUB with HON tags, but the other way around. Probably they went out of regular Prio-Tags

I have to agree with other people that I would not want to do a long flight in this cabin. It was very packed.

Very recently I did the FRA-SIN-FRA on the A380. Both flights were packed in Eco, but the cabin didn't feel that bad. I think it also depends on the seat (window, middle, aisle...). I had an aisle so maybe this was the reason...

A few weeks ago you did the TK experience. Of course, the lenght of the flights are not comparable, but overall from ground to onboard product, lounges and etc. which airline (LH or TK) is in your oppinion better and why?

It sure looked like a pleasant experience. The 2nd lounge looks really good, and how convenient that it gives direct acces to the A380 gates. I did find the C gates area in FRA to be quite a maze when I was there this October, though.

How did you like Miami? Or did you hop on to a cruise quickly after arriving?

Arr ok maybe if I had a row of three to myself   Or at least middle row free . For me the ability to lay flat or semi flat on such a long flight is a must. I just cant do longhaul otherwise its too much for me . One reason I rarely do longhaul these days I dont enjoy it .

Quoting stylo777 (Reply 30):

Well for me TK wins purely for the style of their cabins and their flatbed. Food IMHO is equal to LH and of course TK win on the lounge aspect.

I think the key is to allow plenty of time I always do in these hub airports. I always ignore min connecting times and give myself at least 2-3 hours if not more. FRA has certainly changed since I was there on a regular basis.

We made our way to the subway to take the train to Frankfurt HBF.

From the Regional or the Mainline station?

Quoting OA260 (Reply 1):
We were staying at the InterCity hotel which is right next to the HBF and a decent enough hotel.

InterCity Hotels were developped from the late-80s by the German Railways, as a business-class accommodation, complementing their flagship IC rail services network. Usually located within close reach from Mainline stations (300m at the furthest). I think some are managed by Accor (Ibis) nowadays.

I have to agree with other people that I would not want to do a long flight in this cabin. It was very packed.

Looks- like a bit of a cattle room.

This notwithstanding, large J cabins on some 380s (EK and also LH) have also smack of a cattle room. Some light partitions (curtains or so) near the exits wouldn't hurt.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Soon after take off the meal service began. This was ok but a nice hot meal such as eggs etc.. would be
nicer.
Quoting OA260 (Reply 6):
Onboard LH DUB-FRA was ok but a hot meal option would be good , it doesnt have to be big just scrambled eggs and hot croissants etc...

Very much agreed, as this was a 2hr15min flight. On LX, you would have got a hot breakfast...

Overall, the food you had looks got and well-presented, but servings could be a tad more generous...

Other inpression which I got from your TR:

- DUB still very much looks like an EI fortress, notwithstanding FR

- BMI Lounge is really something, and the demise of that airline from LH-Star to IAG-OW is such a waste of opportunities

- The Xmas market in Frankfurt looks very busy, well busier than that in Nürnberg, which I vsisted on Sat 17/12

- Senator Lounges fly a world higher than Business Lounges. LH should do something about it, really.

Hi Philip,

Great report and pictures, thanks for sharing.

The DUB-FRA delay was quite lengthy, good job you did not have one of the 'tight' connections LH offer via FRA, did you find out the reason for the delay?

The meal on the DUB-FRA flight looked ok, but I agree a hot option could well be offered on a flight of this duration, for example BA offer this on LHR-AMS!

Nice pictures of the Frankfurt markets, the wife was there with her mother and sister too, they really enjoyed it, even brought back the same mugs you had your drinks out of!

I'm flying LH J on an A380 PEK-FRA next month, your pictures show how dated the LH J product is, it's very behind the times, shame, especially on their flagship aircraft!

Not impressed with the catering and it looked like some of your drinks were served in plastic 'glasses' - not great!

Oh well, at least I know not to be too excited!

Cheers

Mark

I am very hard-core when I want to be. Lol!! My best ever weekend was DUB-EWR-IAH-LAX, overnight in LAX and then LAX-DEN-EWR-LHR-DUB all in Y with CO. It was a bargain and earned me 13K BD miles.   I've also done CO SNN-EWR-SNN in one day too with 8 hours to see New York and then back to Shannon. Immigration gave me a hard time about that one! most has been said already, but wonderful tripreport. LH definitely delivers a good product here. Only the coloursetting on LH is so 'cool' or 'German'. It lacks some warmth, which is more my taste and in relation to the luxury of Business Class. Of course, personal opinion here. Great pics throughout the flight, and indeed, the lowerdeck Y-cabin is also not my kind of liking.

Hi Philip/

Hvae seen this one floating about for a bit, finally getting round to a read and a comment.

Really well done, it was enjoyable and thorough as all your reports are.

I must have accidently skipped it, but what was the reason for the initial delay? Tech? Well, it seems you did not suffer too much.

The crew on next flight looked like good fun, and providing a good service too. Impressive. However, I find the catering a little on the underwhelming side, and don't think I like the idea of foil-wrapped mains being paraded about the A380 in business. Also, the LH A380 seems to lack any wow factor selling points. Perhaps this is just an LH business model thing, I guess not every A380 has to have an aquapark onboard.

But overall, I was suitably impressed, especially with lounges that stock Hendricks gin!

Wonderful report!!! Excellent! And nice to see that you liked the Frankfurt Christmas market... makes me nearly homesick... i was living in Frankfurt for 10 years  Well done!

The service in LH Business on the A380 seems to be great, food looks fab, staff seems to be having a great attitude... now they just need to change the seats to fully flat and i will definitely give them a try from SIN-FRA on the A380. This is the only reason actually why i dont use them longhaul... so many alternatives which offer you a bed to sleep in...

But the flat bad seems to be on the way and i can only say: Well done LH! The First class is one of the best design i have seen ever on a plane... its looks classy, elegant, stylish, cozy all at the same time...
