I'm taking a trip to San Antonio from San Diego this December to go see the Alamo Bowl, a college football game. I will be taking America West, and it will be my first time on that airline. I tried to SAT on AA and WN but the fares were too high. Anyway, I will be flying the A320 to and from PHX from SAN and 737s to and from SAT from PHX. I have heard some pretty bad things about this airline; my relatives fly it pretty often and their flights have varied greatly. So how is the seat pitch, cleanliness of the planes, service, etc.? I expect the A320s to be fine, but the 737s are pretty old and probably dirty. And when I say service, I mean amenities and meals, not the attitude of the FA's. Thanks for any info  .

Well...hmmm...America West shall be interesting. I've never had a good flight with them, not even in first class. On their transcontinental red eye flight in first class i got a bagel. Thats as far as service is concerned. If you're flying economy, snack mix and a drink is what you'll get. A movie is shown as long as you pay for headphones. At the airport, keep a look out on the monitors regarding the status of your flight. My experience with America West is that they tend to cancel flights without telling their customers over the PA system. They let you find out yourself by checking the monitors. Hopefully you built in some extra days as your flight may be cancelled for unknown reasons. Its a common event with America West. BUT...i stated once before on this forum, seat pitch in first and economy, especially in economy on the A320 series is terrific. Better than any other US domestic carrier I have flown with. Even tons better than VS or BA international seat pitch on the 744 in economy class. Let us know how your trip was.

Thanks for the info. Considering how short these flights will be and also that I am used to Southwest Air-type service, seat pitch is probably what I would care most about on these flights.

The only thing I am apprehensive about is delays...I am scheduled to get back into SAN at 10:45 PM December 31st!!

I flew America West SJC-PHX earlier this year. The flights were on-time. However, I know that America West has continued to suffer from delays and cancellations this year. Things improved significantly in September...only to get worse again. However, they have managed to score better than UA on the on-time stats this year.

I would DISAGREE regarding the seat pitch on America West. Unless they've made radical changes to their planes lately, the seat pitch is 31 inches in coach, on pretty much all of their planes. My personal experience would attest that.

The old HP seats are thicker, but not very comfortable. The new seats are thinner, and have adjustable headrests. The A320 had them, and I thought they were quite comfortable. In First Class, the seat cushion pushes forward when you recline, so that you don't take away from the space of the person behind you.

Both the A320 and the 737-300 I was on had video screens. The 737-300 also had non-functional b & w mini-PTVs. They were disconnected, due to the demise of the company that manufactured them. As America West installs new seats, you will see the PTVs disappear with them.

America West has vowed to return hot meals to many of their flights, but I doubt you'll get one between PHX-SAT. I've heard that on some HP flights, you pick up a plastic snackbox as you board.

I remember the PTV's on my flight to PHX.They were turned off all the time. And Aaron,I tell you you will regret flying on HP.Their planes are dirty, pillows stink and some aircraft toilets are sealed with duct tape.

Hey dude. My best friend works for America West as a ticket agent, though he does get on the plane and clean it up etc. But my point is: Dont fly America West. The workers joke around there and call it "America Worst". They are a bunch of goofballs. I have never been on a flight, and dont intend to.

G'day Aaron,

We flew America West last year when in USA. Without any doubt they were the worst airline I have ever flown. Staff were uncaring and offered no support for elderly passengers who had missed connecting flights, aircraft were filthy and crew were most discourteous. I complained to America West and was told that they were alarmed at my report. Mate do yourself a favour fly with someone else. When we return to USA in 2001 we would rather walk to Denver from LA than fly with America West. Their motto is Every flight counts. I ask counts for what

Sorry to hear the bad experience from our Aussie friend Getaway. HP has had some operational and service issues to say the least.

GUNDU: When did you fly AWA?

BlingBling: Why talk sh*t when you haven't even tried something? Plus employees at most every airline or company joke or bitch about where they work at. That's human nature. I guess that makes us all "goofballs".

As for Trvlr's question, HP has improved somewhat but beware of cancellations/delays, as they seem to be prevalent at PHX. Since your flights are short-haul, expect the snack-bag on all segments if anything. Do tell us how your trip goes. I've flown over a dozen segments on HP and I've had a couple of crappy ones, but I've also had some really good one, both in coach and in first. It's all in the cards I guess. I hope you enjoy your flights.

Cactusa: Now that I look at it, I was a bit harsh. But everyone else agrees that thier experiences havent been so great.

The only good thing I have heard about that is good from America West is flights on the Airbus. People I know seem to like that.

Cactususa, I apologize, it was a bit harsh, but still, I would avoid America West.

Blingbling: Don't worry about it. You're right about the Airbus, it's the most popular plane among HP passengers. One of the reasons they're ordering tons of them and planning on going to an all-Airbus fleet in the long run.

I have flown America West twice, once SLC to ONT and another time PHX to SLC. Both flights were fine, infact, I had no idea that they were so "bad" until I read posts in this forum. On my SLC to ONT flight, someone else bought my ticket, so that is why I flew them. It was a 732 to PHX and a 733 to ONT. My time from SLC to PHX I helped a friend drive to Pheonix from UT, and flew back. I picked the America west flight 'cause it left in time to get back to SLC for work, and because I was tired of SWA. Not that SWA is bad, it is just fun to change around.

It seems that most of the people who participate on these forums have something against HP. As a former training specialist for a major CRS (computer reservations system) I had the opportunity to fly many different airlines and I find the service and attitude of HP personnel to be comparable to any other major carrier's. If you follow statistics published by the dept. of transportation (on most major newspapers) you will see that in the last 3 months HP reliability has improved considerably and that out of 890 daily flights perhaps an average of 7-10 are affected by irregular ops. Do you guys really think that everything is so perfect at DL,CO,AA? Get real and give HP a chance, they have had a lot of difficulties but are working to fix them. Yes, some of their people are rude, but hey, I have encountered people just as rude or worse at AA,NW,DL,BA,CO and UA. My last two flights with HP were on Halloween Day and both aircraft were spotless (737-300 and 757-200),service was very friendly and ON TIME. Everyone has a right to an opinion and no one deserves rude treatment from any kind of service provider but please be very neutral and fair when judging the service that you have been provided with. Some people just like to whine like children.

I think the brother and sister that were behind me in line at LAS for our flight that was cancelled three nights in a row had something to complain about since they ended up missing their sisters wedding because of HP's cancellations. The supervisor would not approve another airline taking them to their destination cause National was the main carrier they were trying to put the cancelled HP passengers on and National was to capacity by the time we reached the ticket counter. If you would've been in the America West line at LAS waiting for a rebooking you would know why many people have negative feelings toward HP (took four hours). I have experienced lots of European carriers and all US Majors and believe me HP...IS the worst. My opinion and I am being neutral and fair.

G'day Prinair,

I read your comments and those by Crossair145. I am being fair and honest in my summary of America West. I am fortunate to fly regularly both with mainstream airlines and also smaller domestic airlines. Christmas 1999 was the worst disaster I have ever seen. Unsympathetic ground staff and supervisors turning their back on elderly passengers who missed connecting flights due to delays, and inturn missed family Christmas gatherings. I was dismayed at the treatment. No reason was given for 5 hour delays save to say "Sir we are missing a plane" Aircraft were dirty with loose glass in the built in monitors, dirty toilets, incorrect information at terminals and poor management at check in counters.
America West need to look at the impression they create after all first impressions count. I believe that "Every Flight Counts is a good phrase BUT they should chaneg that to "First impressions count" the demeanour of staff sets the scene for a flight and they need to start fromt he ground up.

I've flown on America West Airlines many times, and I have had good experiences on all but one. First flight on them was from STL-PHX-LAS. My family & I took a 733 from STL-PHX, service was good, small breakfast on the flight. The PHX-LAS leg was operated on the Phoenix Suns 757-200. Flight over the Grand Canyon. We flew them back to STL also.

The second vacation with em' was in spring 97. Again, my family and myself flew a 733 to PHX (from STL), and an old livery A320 from PHX-SAN. The A320 was a little dirty, but nice flight over the deserts.

The third time was from STL-PHX-LGB, all on 733's. This was the only "bad" experience w/ them. When we landed at Long Beach, we smacked down on the runway with great force, I think over half the cabin thought we had crashed. I would give them an 8/10. Happy Traveling!
