Hello and welcome to my first trip report.

I have been a regular visitor to this forum and I have decided to share my most recent trip experience here. I hope you all enjoy. The trip took me from Bangkok to London on Thai Airways International's Airbus A340-600. According to the check-in lady, I was told that there was a change of aircraft from the usual Boeing 747-400 THAI operates on Bangkok-London service. I have always looked forward to be flying on an Airbus A340-600, so it was the good start of the trip.

Class: Royal Silk (Business)

Business class dedicated check-in area at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is very spacious

Fast track passport control security screening was very quick. Immediately after is the Business and First class lounge. Notice THAI has removed the Star Alliance Gold sign. This particular lounge is connected to a spa facility which is available to J and F passengers. I decided to use the lounge closer to the boarding gate.

Lounge: very busy at this time as this is a peak time for European bound flights. I do apologise that I did not manage to take pictures inside the lounge. However, despite being busy, the lounge was kept clean and food bar kept refilled.

This is my seat on the flight and the seat control. The seat itself is an 170 degrees angled-flat but I did manage a good night sleep.

Soon after, the dinner was served. I went for THAI's signature dish on the first serving. I was glad that the food service was very quick. Business and First Class passengers can pre-order their food on European-bound flights on TG, but I didn't pre-order the food.

Before cabin lights were turned off, cabin crews handed out a bottle of water for everyone. Approximately 2 hours prior to arrival, breakfast was served. When I woke up, we were over Poland

Cabin impression, this is the forward section of the J cabin on A346, 6 rows on the forward section and 4 on the aft section.

The cabin service was very smooth, efficient and personal, despite the flight being very busy. The food quality was fine, however, I would hope to see TG slightly improve its signature dish. The flight departed slightly behind schedule but it arrived on time and overall it was a pleasant travel experience

Thank you, welcome to this forum, a well written debute on Airliners.net with good pictures. Good you got on the A-340-600, a bit rarer then the 747. Do you have other experiences flying long haul in business? How do you think it compared to these. Or if not, was it like you expected it to be and worth it?
In what way was the signature dish disappointing? (I must admit on the picture it doesn't look much better then the (good) food they serve in economy.

Hi Servaas, Thanks for your comment. I usually fly long haul with TG in Y and occasionally in J. I haven't traveled long haul in Business with any other airlines yet. As for the travel experience in J, I was very happy with cabin crews especially the flexibility in their service.

Congratulation on your first review here. It was very nicely done! 5 Stars report on a truly 5 stars airlines!

The 340-600 is neat but I do miss the 747-400 which is now rarity!
The food served was plenty, made with quality.
Laurent-Perrier is always one of the best mid-price champagne out there!
I'd love to see the cover of the menu, I love those menus in all 3 classes with different orchid cover.

I thought this was an excelelnt first report with plenty of pictures and nice detail. Thoroughly enjoyed, please keep them up.

Interested in the A380 articles, they are badly needed as the product of the 747 is mostly poor and rapidly putting people off. Hopefully this will reverse fortunes. But 6? Really!

Food looked well presented for most dishes.

They serve at least 1 dish exactly the same in C and Y, and I'd put a wild guess it's this Thai dish on this flight. Just the container is plastic in Y.

Compared to other airlines, I find their Y food great, C very mediocre, F well above average.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but why does this come up always on these forums? F/C is exactly the same on 744/346, and the staying 744s are being refitted with new seats and full AVOD. A few are in service. And they have already stated the A380 will not have any suite in F.

I think it was only a temporary switch to A340-600. In the next few months I will be travelling on the same route in Y, hopefully on a refurbished 747-400.

I agree with you Luke that some of the oldest 747s are poor. However, the 1st batch of 6 747-400s has been refurbished in Y class only with AVOD. This year, the second batch of 6 (oldest) 744s will be refitted in all classes. First class will feature very nice looking TG own design mini-suites. Business seats on these 744s will, however, be still angled flat. So Business travelers may be better off with a fully flat seats in J cabin in A380. Economy Class in 744 will be more or less the same as in A380.

- It's nice to see the wonderful Thai A340-600's @ LHR, makes a nice change over the 747's.

Food and presentation looks excellent as always, been a while since I last flew them, hopefully will do again later this year.

THAI has 5 international Business class lounges at BKK airport, and this particular one is next to Royal Orchid Spa, and unfortunately the spa facility is not available to frequent travelers. So Star Alliance Gold card holders will have to use the other 4 (smaller) lounges which have more or less the same food offerings and lounge ambiance.

The seats looks good. I don't need a fully flat seat to sleep, just flew on EK's 77W and found the J Class seat fine.

Seems like you had a really nice flight on Thai, everything "Smooth As Silk" as they say   Interesting that *G don't have access to the Royal Silk Lounge anymore, or did I get it wrong? How much does the offerings differ between TG's J and *G Lounges?

Food looked rather standard I'd say. Portions a bit small, and especially the main course presentation which basically looked like a slightly enhanced YCL meal. Maybe suitable to be served in Premium Y but not in J I'd say. Is it still possible to ask for 2nd servings?

So far, I have never travelled in a lie flat J seat, so it was (to me) very good indeed.

Well, *G still do have access to Royal Silk Lounge, but just not on the particular one next to the spa facility (access to spa facility is for F and J pax and not *G). There are 4 other international Royal Silk lounges that *G can use at BKK airport. All of them are more of less the same

Its unfortunate that TG send its old 744 to ARN, but I think, TG sell tickets on the old Business class as Premium economy, and sell tickets on the old First class as Business.

In general, I am always happy with the food offered on board TG (quality and quantity). I have never asked for a second serving when in J, but a few times when I did in Y cabin, the crew were happy to find something for me, and on one occasion I was given a food from J cabin.

TG A346, beautiful birds. Count yourself really lucky to fly this, instead of the 744. Actually yesterday I noticed a TG A346 overflying my house (near AMS), enroute to BKK of course. Just beautiful.
Service seems great, love the colour design in the cabin, and food looks of great quality and quantity. Is just a good offering I think.

Welcome to the 'writer's side' of the TR forum!
Neat report with the right amount of descriptive pics, well done   
BKK never ceases to amaze me, I feel it has some resemblance with CDG due to the rounded and backlit ceiling.

I'm glad you got to enjoy TG's A346 iso B744, the -600 version is my favourite long hauler. The cabin looks nice and spacious, yet it is not the most modern one around. Meals look decent enough. How was your crew?

I only flew once on the A340-600, and I'm afraid to say that I hated it. Of course, I was in economy and you were in business, so that explains it. But on LH I barely fit into my seat. The flight was only five hours. I don't know if I could have tolerated more. My connection was on an LH 747-400 and though it was a bit old and worn, it was far more comfortable.

Anyway, I'm going to show my colleagues your pictures because they were recently in Thailand. This will bring back fond memories.

Service seems great, love the colour design in the cabin, and food looks of great quality and quantity. Is just a good offering I think.

I really like TG A346, its a lot quieter than the 744. Its sad that TG will decommission all of its A346 between 2015-2017. I agree, the A340-600 is a beautiful aircraft. Also agree with you on the TG cabin and service, it was great!

We had 4 crew member on this cabin of 36 seats, I think this is a good ratio. They all did their jobs professionally and were naturally friendly.

I only flew once on the A340-600, and I'm afraid to say that I hated it. Of course, I was in economy and you were in business, so that explains it. But on LH I barely fit into my seat. The flight was only five hours. I don't know if I could have tolerated more. My connection was on an LH 747-400 and though it was a bit old and worn, it was far more comfortable.

I have been on TG A340-600 on long haul flights (BKK-LHR and BKK-SYD) in Economy class and I quite like it, as it offers a great seat pitch of 34'' (and I am not a tall person at all   ). Although I felt that seats on TG A346 were somewhat narrower than TG 744, I prefer the A346's 2-4-2 than the 744's 3-4-3 configuration.
