TAP C Class To Zurich: I'm Not Impressed!

Hello dear reader and welcome to my latest trip report!

In November 2011 I had to travel to Lisbon on business. I posted a trip report about that here:
KLM, TAP, A Lot Of Fog And The Greve Geral (by knightsofmalta Nov 25 2011 in Trip Reports)

This had been my second visit to the city. Even so, I still could not really say that I had ever really seen Lisbon. On the first visit I was only passing through on my way to a place called Cascais, which by the sea – about 35 minutes away from Lisbon by regional train – and really beautiful. The second time, as I already mentioned, was on business and, save for an unexpected day off due to the strike, I did not get to see much of the city either, apart from the journey from the hotel to the airport where the course I gave was held.

So I decided to give Lisbon another go, to try and figure out what I’d missed previously. By the time I left I knew I had really missed something. Lisbon really took my breath away. I think it is such a beautiful city. It’s old in places and looks very tired in others. But even so, it lures you in and before you know it you just know you’ll be back! Of course, the beautiful sunshine and a spotless blue sky helped matters.

This report covers the return journey form Lisbon to Zurich on TAP in Business Class. The outbound was also on TAP but in Economy and featured a small but rather tasty hotmeal. But alas, the return in Business was a bit of a let down. The crews were friendly but uninspired and the food was certainly nothing to write home about.

Before we start, just a word of apology. I forgot my camera at home on this trip. So all the pictures you see here were taken with my iphone.

When I left Switzerland, the weather was pretty much like this:

And here are a few images of how Lisbon greeted me:

But on to the report.

My flight back to Zurich left at 14h30. So after a very leisurely, lazy breakfast I went back up to my room to back. I stayed at the Sofitel on Avenida de la Liverdade. From here there are two busses to get to the airport: the Aerobus, which costs EUR3.85, or the ‘normal’ bus 745, which takes a slightly different route and stops more often.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0161.jpg

Yours truly...
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0163.jpg

I had actually intended to take the Aerobus, but when it still had not arrived after 30 minutes I gave up and simply chose to take the next 745.

The Aerobus that never came...
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0162.jpg

The bus does not actually stop in front of the terminal building and there’s a short walk of about 3 minutes from the stop to the terminal. What I thought was particularly funny is that there’s writing on the roof of the airport stating that apparently ‘Lisbon airport just keeps getting better’. I’m still not sure if this was meant to be taken seriously of if the airport’s management simply has a hilarious sense of humour. Lisbon airport is a complete mess and far from good, let along better!
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0164.jpg

As I was travelling in Business, I was allowed to use the ‘green way’, which is the express channel for security. And indeed, when I arrived I was the only passenger there and the staff were very helpful and chatty.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0167.jpg

After getting myself a lovely bottle of 30 year old Port, after all this is Portugal, I headed passed the Harrods outlet and straight to the TAP lounge.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0170.jpg

The lounge was quite busy, although it cleared up pretty soon after I arrived.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0173.jpg

When the time came to board I headed to the gate which was a complete mess and evidently not large enough to accommodate a full A320 load of passengers.

Once on board I settled into 1A and watched as seemingly entre hoards of passengers boarded the plane. At some point I really started to wonder where they were all supposed to fit.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0182.jpg

The cabin looked rather old-fashioned but clean.

Once we were airborne, it took a while for the crew to get the meals ready for serving. I found this rather odd as it’s not as though they were waiting for the hot meals to warm up or anything like that.

A cool, jasmine scented towel was served prior to the meal. That was followed by the meal itself.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0190.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0191.jpg

During this entire time interaction with the crew was minimal. And once they had completed the service they disappeared in the galley to have their lunch, which was a hot meal.

Here's the meal. Rather frugal for a flying time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0192.jpg

This here is a Portugese sweet you find everywhere in Lisbon. But alas the TAP version of it includes candied fruit with a subtle hint of moldiness...
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0193.jpg

The mango was good though. Then again, that's not really TAP's achievement is it? The brown paste thingy was banana jam I'm told...

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0199.jpg

After the meal I went to the loo. Not so much because I needed to but rather to see if the crew were actually still on board.

I like this picture here. The reflection makes my fingers seem enormous.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Lisbon%20January%202012/IMG_0200.jpg

After verifying the presence of the crew I settled back into my seat and enjoyed the rest of the flight and the view.

All in all I think TAP Business Class was a bit of a let down, especially after the good experiences I've had with them in Economy. I certainly would not pay extra for the low level of service they provide in Business. Which is a pity really and certainly does not do justice to the Portugese people, whom I found to be very friendly and polite.

That concludes this very short report. I hope you enjoyed it just the same.

Cheers,
William

Same here actually, on the two flights with TAP I've been in in Economy I was rather impressed with both the service and the quality and quantity of the food. But their business class product is not worth the price.

Cheers,
William

Hi William, a nice report as usual!

TAP didn't provide a great Business class product by the sounds of it. The meal sure don't look very substantial.
Lisbon looks like a cool town, I hope to go there myself one day.

Hey William, nice report. Pics looked quite decent for being taken with an iPhone. Guessing it was the 4, as the 4S can pretty much replace the compact camera

By judging those short glances of the city seen from taking off and landing at LIS, the city looks really wonderful. LH have some cheap fares there, so maybe I'll go there soon. Hotels are cheap too.

Surprised that they have hot meals in Y on the ZRH route. Flew TAP from ARN to LIS in 2010 Y, and the meals were quite generous for being a 4 hour flight intra-EU. Then again, what's the point to fly C on short haul when you have *G status anyway, + many proper airlines already serve up sufficient food in Y on short haul flights. There's booze in the lounge anyways. At least that's my opinion.

Yes I can only agree with you. Very crowded, quite boring terminals, and the security staff were very rude to me. But I guess you were lucky to have gotten the friendly staff in the fast track lane.

Interesting, so was this towel designed for use on the ground? Or was it overly scented like the ones they have on LX?

Okay, that doesn't look generous at all, considering you got a hot meal in Y on the outbound. They could've at least offered a plate of hot food in addition to the cold cuts.

Thanks for sharing!

Yes you must. It is really such a nice place and the sunshine brought out the best side of it. It's also a fascinating place if you're interested in history. I was quite amazed at how much of the Arab influnece is still visible.

Hi Jonas

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 4):

Yep, it's an iphone 4. It's not bad I guess but without a zoom you're always somewhat limited. It's also a lot easier to end up with shaky pictures with the iphone I think.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 4):
LH have some cheap fares there, so maybe I'll go there soon. Hotels are cheap too.

Well from what I understand you don't really need much encouragement to get on a plane anyway. So yes, why not combine that with a visit to such a lovely place as Lisbon?

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 4):
Then again, what's the point to fly C on short haul when you have *G status anyway, + many proper airlines already serve up sufficient food in Y on short haul flights.

To be honest, my only motivation was that I wanted to try out their Business Class onboard product. At least nnow I know I haven't missed much.

The strangest thing about the airport is that you walk into the departures hall and there are no check-in counters. You really have to know where to look!

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 4):
Or was it overly scented like the ones they have on LX?

It was quite heavily scented, but at least it was a pleasant smell.

The flight left LIS at 14h30. I'm not sure if perhaps the time of day had an influence on the meal they served as well. Maybe the return, which leaves ZRH at 19h05, would have a hot meal in Business too.

In any case, thanks for posting guys!

Cheers,
William

Hey William,

Nice bite sized report. I'm sorry TAP's C class didn't meet your expectations... Given they are a *A carrier you'd expected more I guess. The meal looks mediocre at the best, something more substantial would've been better of course. One good thing: they thought about a typical Portuguese dessert, albeit the 'faux' version of it... Was the flight full?
And btw: lovely sunny pics of Lisbon, but it looks so empty?

Lisbon is a beautiful city.

I was there during the new year. The people were polite and made me feel really welcomed. Much better than spanish.

However, the airport is tiny and dirty. The seats are so dirty that should belong to 3rd world country.

TAP service is not good. The C class is a joke on the narrow body. Simply move the arm rest wider on 3 across economy seat is not C class seat.

Both the outbound and inbound were completely full. It's amazing, I really thought they wouldn't stop coming! On my flight in November they were even using an A321 on the Zurich route instead of the A320.

That's quite deceiving actually. There were tourists all over the place. But I guess there's so much to see that they spread out over the city.

It was just a trench coat and I was wearing it more out of convenience than because of the temperature. And I needed it too by the time we landed in Zurich again.

No idea, I was wondering about that too. I guess they mean green as in traffic lights. The boarding pass said 'FAST' so I was looking out for something called the FAST lane...

It's not only that. The back of the seat has these two flaps, one on either side. It must have something to do with how they push the three seats together to make two out of them. In any case, the flaps are quite hard and very uncomfortable on the back.

Well, yes and no. It's certainly very stylish. But there's no natural light and it is rather dark and gloomy, with this strange blue light everywhere. The F & B selection is good and quite extensive. They even have a steamer for baby food.

Thanks for commenting guys!

Hi William,

Nice report. Your photos bring back the nice memories of visiting Lisbon myself in 2006.

Sad to hear about the poor service in J. My only experience with Portugal airline was with Portugalia in Y where we got served hot meal. But that was in 2005.

Probably one positive point. It looked like that the crew members did not bother your photography.

Thank you for sharing.

Hi sdate747

Quoting sdate747 (Reply 13):
Once flew TAP C LHR-LIS on a weeknight and was one of 2 pax in C, got great service and the food was pretty good. However agree from your TR, paltry level of service indeed

I'd read a trip report about TAP C class from LIS to LHR before I took this trip. Granted the report was a couple of years old I may have had rather high expectations.

Hi LXM83

Quoting LXM83 (Reply 14):
Thanks for this nice report, after all the iphone pictures turned out quite well.

Thanks, I was pleasantly surprised myself by the quality of the pics actually.

Quoting LXM83 (Reply 14):
Maybe they should choose smaller plates to make the meal appear bigger.

If they make the plates any smaller they might as well not serve anything at all as far as I'm concerned. Oh well, win some you lose some.

Thanks for posting guys!

Cheers,
William

Hi Willam! Thanks for sharing the pictures of Lisbon - looks very nice

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
A cool, jasmine scented towel was served prior to the meal. That was followed by the meal itself.

I quite liked these towels - good quality for something pre packaged

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Here's the meal. Rather frugal for a flying time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Oh dear. It looks very similar to my CMN-LIS meal I had last week, but that flight is less than an hour. I'm glad i went with SN for my LIS-BRU flight

That's what I though as well. I think I prefer them to the ones SWISS uses. Also, they were made of real cloth and not out of that strange kind of strengthened paper.

Indeed, I read that report. The hot meal you got on that flight looks like an opulent delight compared to what TAP had on offer.

Thanks for posting!

William

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 5):
The flight left LIS at 14h30.

William, your flight departure time was after lunch and your meal was one of the snacks served on "outside
main meal times" flts. As I said before, commenting on another TR also featuring a flight leaving at a time between
lunch and dinner, I agree it is not a substantial offer and many passengers are complaining about the offering so
hopefully the catering dept management might change it soon

Quoting sultanils (Reply 6):
The 'Pastel de Belem' is usually quite delicious, but this one obviously is a let-down

Sorry to disappoint you, but that is not a pastel de nata (de Belem) even though the 2 cakes look very similar!
It is a "bom bocado" and has dried fruit in it...

Quoting roberts87 (Reply 8):
Is that all? And Y gets a hot meal, but C doesn't? Disappointing really.

On this particular flight, it would not be a hot meal in Y either!

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 16):

You are right! My personal opinion (and that of many crew) is that this meal is good for a flight of up to 1h30, not longer
ones like LHR and ZRH

Good report William. Thanks, enjoyed reading that.

The food looks miserable, and I laughed on your attempt to find the crew. haha.

Rgds

Thanks for the clarification. I guess at the end of the day it's always a question of finances too, although I'm not familiar with TAP's current financial situation.

There's a shop close to the monastery in Belem where you can buy the Pastel de Belem. I thought I'd give the place a try. That was until I realised the queue for the shop was spilling out onto the pavement!

My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.

Well okay, perhaps I may have watched just too many airline disaster movies, and perhaps I may have a slightly overactive imagination...

Thanks for the comments guys!

Hi William,

Thanks for this one. Have never been to Lisbon so I enjoyed your pictures. Bet that dose of winter sun did you good.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
When I left Switzerland, the weather was pretty much like this:
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
And here are a few images of how Lisbon greeted me:

One way to LIS please.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
I headed passed the Harrods outlet and straight to the TAP lounge.

Harrods in Lisbon, interesting, wouldn't have expected that.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
The lounge was quite busy, although it cleared up pretty soon after I arrived.

Why, what did you do?
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Here's the meal. Rather frugal for a flying time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Doesn't look inspiring and the presentation is minimal, food looks like it's just been chucked on the plate.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Not so much because I needed to but rather to see if the crew were actually still on board.

And were they?!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
I certainly would not pay extra for the low level of service they provide in Business.

Nah, you should stick to LH or BMI, you get much more action and in-flight entertainment for your money there!!

Happy flying

My pleasure. Good to hear from you.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 21):
Bet that dose of winter sun did you good.

You can say that again! I couldn't get over it how pleasant the weather was. Funny thing is, when I arrived at the hotel the receptionist was complaining about how cool it was for this time of the year!

Quoting infodesk (Reply 21):
Why, what did you do?

Don't you start too.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 21):
And were they?!

Well yes,. But they sure looked as though they wished they weren't.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 21):
Nah, you should stick to LH or BMI, you get much more action and in-flight entertainment for your money there!!

Finally somebody who understands. I'm mean is it really too much to ask to be entertained? I hope you're not too disappointed that nothing went wrong this time.

Thanks for posting Hannah!

Cheers,
William
