VII. Space Museum - Peter & Paul Fortress
VIII. Space achievements - Political History Museum
IX. Metro tributes
X. Rail-air "wonder" - October Railway Museum

While the St-Petersburg has its fair share of Churches, other heritage buildings, canals and Art Museums, it also has more unexpected attractions, including a broad range of museums other than the Ermitage or the Russian Museum.

Among these, there are interesting air & space attractions (well, more space than air actually).

VII. Space Museum - Peter & Paul Fortress

This major heritage attraction also accommodates a small Space Museum, which I can certainly recommend to all of you if you happen to be in Piter.

Press cuts about the successful launch of Sputnik:

Among all non-Soviet Newspapers displayed in the Museum, French L'Humanité has the most extensive coverage...

Mock-up of Sputnik and other medals:

Spaceport in Baikonur:

Sputnik full scale mock-up:

Cosmonaut training attended by Yuri Gagarin:

Press cut on Gagarin's achievement from French L'Humanité (again seemingly the most vocal Publication about this event in the "Free World")

Tributes to Gagarin:

Short-lived Space Shuttle "Buran":

Little exhibition next to the Museum (Sputnik, Belka & Cmrelka, Gagarin):

VIII. Space achievements - Political History Museum

Another place where to spot tributes to the Space achievements of former USSR is the Political History Museum, located near the Peter & Paul Fortress.

"The dream became true on 12th April" (1961):

Other tributes to Gagarin and Soviet space achievements:

"Glory to the Party's son":

Official belongings of Gagarin:

Facing the press:

Some 50yrs +2mths after his achievement, Yuri Gagarin remains very popular in Russia. While in the Museum, I had the opportunity to feel the enthusiasm of a school party of children aged 6-7...

Могучая воля, великая слава
Твоё достоянье на все времена!

IX. Metro tributes

Metro Station Tekhnologicheskiy Institut, on Lines 1 and 2:

It has various tributes to the achievements in which this prestigious institute was involved. This of course includes the Space achievements of 1957 and 1961:

X. Rail-air "wonder" - October Railway Museum

St Petersburg just flows with Museums. One of these if the October Railway Museum, which is packed with loads of heritage railway stock. Well, it has also has some rail-air goodies, really unexpected.

Even though the USA and former USSR agreed to SALT then START bilateral treaties, both parties kept improving strategic warfare equipement.

In the mid-80s, missile launching railway mobile complexes were designed and built on the Soviet side.

More background:

Launching Unit (Locomotive + control car + launching car + power-supply car)

Further details about the DM62 Locomotive, a tailor-made version of Class M62 locos, still very widespread in the former Soviet bloc:

Control car:

Launching car:

Power-supply car:

A great museum, and this very particular attraction was doubtless unexpected and very impressive. Thank god, it never went beyond experimental use...
