Jetting the Blue way to New York!

Background:
May 2011, bad need to get plans and bookings started for the upcoming summer season. As it is not the most well kept secret to most of you anymore. Continental has been and still will be my favourite airline for many reasons. As the merger with United is already in progress, and rumours where going around that Continental’s Newark-Brussels flight would be going over to United metal. This summer would be one of the last chances to fly Continental, so I started looking to all kind of fares and combinations. After a while I found myself booked on Continental’s daily direct flight from Brussels to Newark and connecting trough to Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport. The aircraft combination would be a Boeing 777-200 for the long sector and the Embrear 145 from Expressjet on the short haul service to Greenville (See Part I)

After the long haul sector was booked it was time to look at some domestic sectors! Southwest airlines, a famous US-low cost carrier started flying into my regional airport of Greenville/Spartanburg international airport in March 2011 with quite a bit of advertising in the area. This is quite good news for the area since Greenville/Spartanburg is one of the most expensive airports in the US resulting in people rather driving +2hours to Atlanta or Charlotte. Well, since we are here. Time to book, I booked a flight from Greenville/Spartanburg to Fort Lauderdale stopping in Orlando Muncipal International Airport on their 737-700’s. (See Part II)

Still having about 10 days extra until my next flight it was time to make a small sidetrip. Looking into options some interesting choices popped out. Originally I wanted to catch a Star alliance comination with US Airways and Continental Airlines from West Palm Beach to Dallas FW via Charlotte, Philadelphia, Newark and Houston adding me 2 767-200’s on both routes. However, pricing changed and I had to look for something. Then I found something to Las Vegas on US Airways and Virgin America consisting a flight on the Boeing 757-300. I almost settled in for that one. However, after a lot of attempts to convince me by Planehunter, airbuseric (Eric), Flieger67 (Markus) and others.. They finally convinced me to try another combo consisting 2 767-200’s. The first flight would be with American airlines from Miami to New York JFK. I was not excited at all about this leg as I would not get any miles and I flew with them back in 2008 from New York JFK to Miami on the A300 leaving me rather mixed impressions.. Oh well, they deserved a second chance and try to clear my toughts. At least the flight would be operated by a 767-200. I would travel on to Philadelphia by train. (see Part III)

Since my next segment started in Fort Lauderdale, I needed to get to South Florida. Off course I could fly Southwest airlines down to Southern Florida. But logged them just a week prior did not made it to inviting take them again (however, I still think they are a great airline). Another option was flying US Airways directly to South Florida on a Airbus A319 or Boeing 737-400, still quite boring. However, US Airways operates a few flights between it’s hubs in Charlotte and Philadelphia with it’s Boeing 767-200 aircraft. Since the 767’s other mission is long haul, I opted to book the 767 flight to Charlotte connecting on to the Boeing 737-400 down to West Palm Beach. (see Part IV)

Back to the original Itinerary. Some way I needed to get back home, off course the most logic way was just booking a return from South Florida to Brussels on Continental via Newark and I would have done it most probably. But hey, I’m an A.netter right who loves to find all kinds of crazy combinations that outsiders would call you crazy. Right? Soon my attention fell on an pretty popular and loved American carrier named on jetBlue. One of the two only airlines actually making profit (the other one is Southwest) and usually gives out perfect and flawless service based on many other opinions and trip reports that I’ve read. Even my recent Southwest crew was bragging about jetBlue. However, I had the chance to fly jetBlue back in 2008 from Charlotte to New York JFK and must say I only had a pretty average flight that did not impress me that much, especially one male flight attendant who would make his appearance in the media when deploying the emergency slide while taxing to the gate in New York JFK. To be honest, even on my flight 2 years prior did not give any sign that he was actually loving his job at all…
As we all know that this act was very exceptional and there had been some changes over the years (New York’s JFK Terminal 5 p.ex) and to form a real opinion about an airline you have to fly them at least twice. So, In the hope to have better words for them (or a similar opinion as others). A flight from Fort Lauderdale to New York JFK was booked. I opted for JFK to experience the most-advertised terminal in the world I supposse. The aircraft was scheduled to be on a standard A320 flight!

Pre-departure:
So about a weekend to go here in South Florida and just relaxing and enjoying my time. Trying to write Trip reports about snowy and cold conditions while I was sitting in shorts and a short sleeve shirt and still feeling hot. One of the nice parts was the Palm Beach area is the Palm Beach Gardens mall. Look at this waterfountain and waterway inside the mall



Soon August 14th came in and at 10.00 I received an email invinting me to check in for my flight to New York JFK. While jetBlue has only Economy seats in it’s planes we where offered seats in the first few rows that they called ‘Even more legroom’ This section has 38 inch seat pitch, all yours for just 40 dollars. Since the 33 inch seat-pitch is more than sufficient for me I stayed cool with my seat 16A. Soon the next day came and at 7.00 my long journey to New York and onwards commenced! The ride down on I-95 was very smooth, making me arrive at Fort Lauderdale’s terminal 3 just a bit before 8.00. Terminal 3 is used by American, Bahamasair, Canjet, Sunwing, Westjet, US Airways, jetBlue and Jazz

After saying goodbye my first stop would be the check-in desk to get my luggage checked in to New York JFK. Since my next leg would leave from Newark my bag could not be checked further on to my final destination (which is logical off course). No bag fees on jetblue and a friendly agent. Now that is a nice beginning of a domestic trip. After getting rid of my luggage it was time to search the FIDS. Our plane would arrive from New York JFK as B6 33 at 9.05, 15 minutes later than scheduled. This would result in an on time departure back as B6 16



On the Arrival FIDS I noticed something strange B6 7700 from Havana, Cuba arriving at gate TEST. Would this be a real flight?



A quick visit to the food concessions pre-security. Isn’t the atmosphere beautiful over here trying to imitate a typical Florida street.



Next stop, the security lane which was more crowded than expected. By the time I arrived in concourse F it was already 8.40 Concourse F is used for jetBlue and Jazz flights while the other airlines use concourse E. In the meanwhile some action at the gate had started and soon there was an A320 in sight. It was clear that this would be our plane, soon after my thoughts got confirmed. jetBlue flight 33 from New York JFK had just docked in gate F4, today N503JB would be operating this morning Fort Lauderdale rotation.



Named bluebird. Quite interesting that this is the first plane delivered to jetBlue airways.



Alongside there was N178JB, Jetblue’s first Embrear 190 and number 4 off the production line she is also known as ‘It’s a blue thing’. Being prepared for it’s flight to Cancun as jetBlue 1795



It seemed to be pretty calm in the E-concourse as well. Just a US Airways Boeing 737-400 due to depart to Charlotte as US 1168 at 10.20



For the remainder of the time I sat down in the F3 gate area. This gate was boarding jetBlue airways flight 503 to Newark, If course it was more convenient for me to book this flight. But opted the JFK flight to see the new terminal. It was actually quit interesting to see that jetBlue had flights to JFK, Laguardia and Newark leaving at the same time. Soon it was 9.15 and the boarding started. The first group that was allowed to board was people purchasing the even more legroom seats and those in the emergency exits! After that boarding was done from rear to front. At 9.30 I was allowed to board.

When I boarded the plane I noticed one female flight attendant who was just standing there, no greetings, no help… no anything.. Just standing and staring in front of her. I greeted her, she greeted me… and she kept on dreaming and staring while other passengers where boarding! While boarding the usual announcements came to stow your luggage or just how to board an airplane as quick as possible. However, I could really hear some annoyance in her voice. Don’t know what’s going on.. but for sure not a good impression for an airline I’m giving a second chance. When seated in row 17 I could find the typical Airbus condensation! Actually, back in 2010 I’ve seen it as well on a US Airways A321 from Ft Lauderdale to Charlotte. You can find the review here.

My view for the next few minutes, note the cones. Earlier arriving passengers where allowed to use the rear exit as well for deplaning.



An airline I would not try in the near future. I guess after flying this airline some people would say airlines like Vueling and Spanair are 5 star companies

By now all the bins where being rapidly closed and the manual safety demonstration began. By now it was clear that this crew had rather been doing other stuff than working this early morning Ft Lauderdale run from New York. They did their tasks, but nothing more.. and most certain with no smile, sometimes even a bit in a harsh manner. Oh well… Here is a view of the executive jet apron over here.

Soon I noticed the inflight entertainment system has been switched on. Actually, it has been on since I boarded. jetBlue only pauses the entertainment system when demonstrating the safety video. jetBlue offers 36 channels of live-tv, however I did find this on at least 10 channels.

But not for long, seems like jetBlue haves a lot of parterships in JFK

By now it was already 10.45 and our drink orders are being taken, some OJ in the morning for me. In the meanwhile we are still above the Atlantic ocean, quite far from land as you can see.

15 minutes later our choice of beverage came, in the meanwhile the passenger in 17F fell asleep, the flight attendant woke her up by brutally yelling “MAM,… MAM, MAM” so at least the few rows around could hear her as well, not a very professional way of costumer care. Soon the choice of snacks followed as well, I chose the Bluechips… Snacks and non-alcaholic drinks where for free.



After service was competed I went back to use the lavatory. Not that I’m a regular lavatory photographer, but kind of liked this design of the chequered floor



Next stop was back to my bag to give the routine gift. The flight attendants quickly said thanks, asked me why I was giving the gift. After explaining why they went on with their talking and gossping, like my Southwest flight a few weeks prior there was one uninformed flight attendant again. The remainder of the flight I spent some time playing with the audio channels.




Before actually realising it, it became 11.45 and the engines where pulled back commencing our decent in to the New York area. Looks pretty cloudy down there, doesn’t it?



The captain announced a bumpy approach and wanted all the cabin preparations done early, soon the flight attendants started their preparations for their decent. When reaching 13 000 feet everything was stowed and everybody was in their seats. Almost there now

After a rather uneventful approach in the New York skies Bluebird made a nice touchdown on runway 4R ending my last domestic flight in this trip report series.

An engine was turned off and soon thereafter an annoying squeeling sound. Ten minutes later we came to a full stop at gate 19 in Terminal 5 besides the Embrear 195 N219JB.



Soon a familiar plane for he Belgian aviation enthiousast was seen. VT-JWH just completing her journey from Chennai and Brussels making it’s way to Terminal 8.



Both front and rear doors where used for passenger deplaning. Unlike most other members, I did use the front door for deplaning. No underwing shot, but at least I could take a picture like this one.


Arriving in New York JFK International airport

After a rather average flight from Ft Lauderdale I bid farewell to the crew and setted foot in jetBlue’s new terminal 5 in New York JFK. First a final picture of Bluebird, now being prepared as jetBlue flight 209 bound for Long Beach, CA. Quite a long journey for an A320 In my opinion, even with all the whistles and bells.



First we follow a corridor down to the arrivals hall, this looks like any modern US-Airport



Then up to the main atrium, must say quite impressive!



Today we “should” be claiming our luggage from Carrousel 4.



Since it was already 20 minutes after the plane had shut down its engines, I was expecting luggage delivery soon. However, we waited… we waited and we waited. Nothing to come. In the meanwhile I started walking a bit! Here you can see the old TWA terminal.



Let’s take a peek at the arrivals board, not such a healthy day for jetBlue here in New York!



After another while of waiting bags from other flights started to appear, and all passengers claimed their bags. It was now 13.20, 45 minutes after docking in at JFK still no sign of any bag. Suddenly an agent walked up to us screaming out that all bags had arrived on carrousel 6. His information was soon to be confirmed as all bags from jetBlue 16 from Ft Lauderdale where jammed in to each other. Soon thereafter the mad dash started to get their bags while I made some arrangements for ground transportation. Once the majority left I could claim my luggage at 13.30.

As some of you noticed this is the first leg in a long trip from West Palm Beach to my house in Belgium. To follow my journey onward from New York JFK… please stay tuned.

Overall verdict

It’s no secret anymore that jetBlue has become one of America’s favourite airlines. As well the media as many trip reports justify this information. Back in 2008 I had a rather average to slightly disappointing experience with jetBlue. But hey, everybody deserves a second chance. Don’t they? This trip was an excellent opportunity to do this.

Let’s start off with the good points of the airline. In Economy class you have a 33 inch seat pitch which is way above any of it’s American competitors, the addition of having free in flight entertainment (even with quite a few blank channels)and free snacks is a nice feature as well on a short flight from Ft Lauderdale to New York. However there where a few major downsides and similarities to my 2008 trip, to start off I found the crew to be a indifferent. Not at all was I expecting a Singapore Airlines greeting or anything, but this set was way behind it’s US counterparts. This crew was clearly not interested in working today being very indifferent and sometimes even rude, similar to my 2008 trip.New Yorks Terminal 5 is very good looking with quite an interesting design, however I was disappointed in how the situation concerning our luggage was handled. No announcements, information or anything. Just after a half an hour somebody yelling on top of his longs, quite shamefull for an airlines home base (and especially the given attention to it). While jetBlue does have several good facts that are above industry average The inflight crew and the arrival at JFK quite disappointed me making my experience with jetBlue rather an average one. Will I choose for jetBlue again? Only if there is no decent alternative.


Overall Remarks.

jetBlue Airlines 0016 from Ft Lauderdale to New York JFK (Total score is 71%):

Departure: 70% (Nice airport, security was a bit on the slow side however)
Aircraft cleanliness : 80% (kept clean and maintained)
Seat Comfort: 90% (Seats where firm and provided more than enough legroom)
Crew: 40% (No greeting, not interest in their job, sometimes even a bit rude!)
IFE: 80% (Great choice, Just sorry that quite a selection was unavailable.)
Catering: 80% (Snacks where free and ok for the time of day, drinks served by hand)
Arrival: 60% (Nice terminal area, however disappointed by the way our arrival was handled.)

Nice to read about your experience with B6, which is an airline I'd like to try some day. Your experience didn't seem to be the best one but as you said, that legroom sure seem great.

I have been waiting for this part of your report as I was curious about your JetBlue experience. You made me even more curious when you said to me earlier that you were not really satisfied.

I was asking myself what could have gone wrong. The legroom? Impossible. The on board service with signature Blue chips and free non-alcoholic beverages? I can hardly imagine it. But now I know why. The attitude of one particular flight attendant who presumably got up at the wrong side of her bed. What a missed opportunity. Did you write any comment to JetBlue regarding this?

Nevertheless, your report was a real joy to read. Not to mention about accompanying nice pictures. Thank you for sharing.

Very interesting trip report!

In my experience the "honeymoon" period between JetBlue and the general traveling public is long over! While having snacks and good IFE on domestic flights was novel when JetBlue started.... Both Virgin America and even Delta have followed suit... In fact on Delta you also have a good chance of having wifi onboard.

Virgin America has definitely usurped JetBlue's reputation for being hip, trendy, and passenger friendly.

While T5 at JFK looks really nice...I've heard complaints that it can be really crowded and the walk from the JFK airtrain to the actual terminal is REALLY long....this is because you have go around the classic TWA terminal.

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Interesting.

I recently flew AA from NYC to Punta Cana. I regretted not flying JETBLUE because:

1. The excellent legroom and
2. Entertainment.
3. They were $50 cheaper.

AA serve nothing now unless you pay The crews were nice and we got our bags fast.

I have never flown them but my sister likes them.

Too bad that JetBlue was a disappointment. I agree with that I would be disappointed with the same behaviour. Especially bad was the baggage situation at JFK, their main airport. Very bad. That's one reason why I never check bags.

Hey Marc! Another great TR in the series, looking forward to the next one.

Rather surprised to hear how unfriendly the B6 crew were, I have never flown with them but I have heard they was suppose to be a really great airline. Anyway what great luck catching the first ever B6 aircraft (and also being next to the first B6 E-190 at the same time!), im sure that is a pretty good achievement!

In my experience, JetBlue's on-board friendliness is usually at least as good as any other US airline, which is to say hit or miss. My company is too cheap to spring for anything other than Y class domestically, but I have often tried to fly JetBlue if the price and timing are right. I've flown B6 many times and I have seen it all from surly staff to very warm and welcoming FAs. I must admit seeing much more of the latter than the former but this is at least consistent to what I have seen on US, UA and DL. Not that this is an excuse for providing excellent service all the time. I have never been a FA and cannot imagine the varying amount of people one has to serve and be responsible for... it takes a special kind of person and I'd think that if you are not a "people person" being an FA is not the right job for you!

Luckily I don't really care about FA's attitude too much as I'm too busy looking out of the window but I can see how a bad attitude can be dissappointing. But at least the legroom was good and you went through some nice terminals. That picture of the mall in Florida looks really nice as well as the terminal you flew out of. Did you spend some time in Manhatten? I haven't been to New York for many years but it would be interesting for me to go back again as a tourist.

Nice read and good pictures, thanks for sharing.

Not managed to fly B6 yet, fog delays @ Long Beach some years ago made me give up on the flight.

Overall looks like and ok flight, shame the crew were on an off day - shame too about the luggage delay, not good.

Love the fact the old TWA signage is still in existence.

Your Dash is C6-BFP, not CT-BFD...

Just to follow-up on my previous post, I have flown B6 a lot and the vast majority of flights have had good or great service. On only a few occasions have I had problems with the satellite tv or noticed other people experience problems. I haven't always checked a bag but the times I have done so have been generally problem-free. Along with 40-50 other passengers, we had to wait 30+ minutes for our bags at HPN recently, which at 11PM after a long day is not great, but that is the exception not the rule in my experience. JetBlue has never misplaced my bag and in some cases the bag reached the carousel before I did (I walk slow knowing there is no rush!)

It does sound like the two JetBlue flights did not meet the OP's expectations and I don't know whether that was unlucky or perhaps the result of hyped-up expectations. I am not blaming the OP but when the expections exceed the reality, it is very tough to ignore even small shortcomings. I have not tried VX yet but I generally have felt B6 service was as good or better overall than competing service from the legacy carriers. Perhaps these negative experiences were the result of unfortunate timing or maybe this is a sad trend.
