Hello and welcome to my second trip report.
The trip was a short weekend break to Madrid from London and as I have never traveled with either Iberia or British Airways before, I have decided to book to fly from London to Madrid with Iberia and the return flight from Madrid to London with British Airways. I hope you enjoy.
Date: 11 February 2012
Airlines: Iberia
Flight: IB3163
Route: LHR - MAD
Aircraft: Airbus A320-200
Class: Economy
Arriving London Heathrow Terminal 3
Self Service Check-in machine
Check-in / bag drop counters. For the flight, I checked-in online the day before and, fortunately, emergency exit seats were available to choose and I selected it.
Security screening was rather quick given the busy half-term weekend in the UK
At this point, I still had a more than 1:30 hours before the flight and it was time for breakfast so I found myself a cafe
Arriving at the boarding gate
Boarding call was made and passengers travelling with children were invited to board first and Business Class and One World Elite card holders could board at leisure. Economy Class passengers were boarded by seat row number. I was among the last to board.
Very good leg room on the emergency exit. However, the seats on the exit rows cannot be reclined. Soon after everyone was seated, Spanish and English newspapers were distributed. Then safety demonstration was shown, after that, cabin crew came to me and other fellow passengers seated in the exit rows to make sure that we read safety card carefully.

In Economy class, food and drinks were available for purchase. I bought a cup of cappuccino
some pictures during the flight
Descending to Madrid Barajas Airport
Landing was very smooth
My seat
Passport control was straight off the aircraft. Then it was a long walk to the baggage belt.
Baggage claim area. Unfortunately, it was a rather long wait, well nearly half an hour, until the first bags arrive.
Here are some pictures taken in Madrid
As for the return flight with British Airways, I paid for an upgrade offer which was available on BA's 'manage my booking' page
Date: 13 February 2012
Airline: British Airways
Flight: BA461
Aircraft: Boeing 767-300ER
Class: Club Europe
Check-in at Madrid Barajas Terminal 4. I was told by the check-in agent that my flight would be delay for at least 1 hour due to bad weather.
Security check
I walked around the terminal before getting a train to my gate
Train to Terminal 4S
Iberia Lounge. I really like the space in this lounge.
Getting to the boarding gate. The airport was very quiet at that time
Boarding call was made by seat row numbers in Economy Class. Club Europe and One World Elite members could board at their leisure. At the aircraft door, we were greeted by very friendly crews.
The cabin. I am sorry for the poor image quality. This is a Domestic / European configured 767, so the seats in Club Europe are more or less the same with Economy Class, with the seats in the middle row being left empty. The seat configuration is effectively 2-2-2 in Club Europe, and 2-3-2 in Economy Class.
leg room
Safety card
Soon after took off, drinks and snack were served
Then dinner was served

Arriving Heathrow terminal 5, we had to take a train to the main terminal. Passport control was very quick indeed and so was the baggage waiting time. Overall, it was a good travel experience with both IB and BA. The outbound flight was around 20 minutes behind schedule but managed to land 10 minutes before planned arrival time. The inbound flight was delayed due to adverse weather condition. Crews on both flights were friendly and energetic. The only negative thing for the trip was the long baggage waiting at MAD airport.
Thanks for reading, please feel free to leave your comments / feedback.

Good TR!
Would you say that the Club Europe upgrade is a good deal? Ive been offered a similar thing for my flight in a few weeks and although its tempting, I'm not too sure weather its worth it on such a short flight.

Nice report and pictures Win, thanks for sharing.
Once wonders how long it will be before IB reinstate a snack and free drinks to bring them in line with BA, AA have announced free booze again, so hopefully not so long.
The IB lounge in T4S is pretty good, nice selection of drinks, food and comfy seats with decent views of the apron to watch the passing traffic, will be visiting there again in March

- It's good value if you need the extra Tier points for your status. I have the option to upgrade on LHR-FRA next week but I don't need the Tier points, I can eat in the lounge and the flight has free booze, not worth the upgrade on this occasion.

I've done this a number of times between AMS and LHR, which is even a shorter flight. The reason for that is that Schiphol and LHR Terminal 5 are very crowded and the possibility of check-in, passport control and security taking more time than the flight itself is very real.
Especially a short flight should be trouble-free and I found the Club Europe check-in very smooth and passport control with Fast Track was a breeze. And besides, if I do have some extra time I love the BA-lounge in T5,

I never understood why IB discontinued free drinks or snacks. It seems that the only difference with a LCC is the airfare.

Very nice report, thanks for posting! I covered LHR-MAD a couple of times in the past, including a few legs in Club.

Did they spot your bag under the seat?

Me too, one of my favourite lounges. Good food, drink and views.

You need to dissect the things available, and decide for yourself. Tier points would be the biggest factor I think - if you need them, go for it. Need more luggage allowance? Go for it. Lounge/food/drink/comfort/service, I don't think so. The better meal is only worth a few pounds, and those little bottles of champagne cost around £5. I flew LCA-LHR in C last week, and if I hadn't got a good deal with airmiles, I would have happily flown back in Y rather than C. I think 9/10 it's just not worth it.

For my sector, I wouldn't say it's worth the upgrade. The load in Economy was light, almost everyone could have a seat next to them free. I would think it would worth the upgrade if there is a full load in Economy.

Hello

Hi
Great trip report, enjoyed the read! IB and BA seemed to be ok but not impressive! Nice to see a 767 on your MAD-LHR sector.
MAD's T4 looks wonderfull
Greetings
Marc
Thanks for commenting Marc! and sorry for the long time to get back.

Hi ! ...me again .... Isn't it cool to experience a two full carrier's service in one trip ... ah beautiful MAD ... thanks stipica
Hi Stipica! It was indeed. However I was slightly disappointed when I found out that if I chose to fly with Iberia on the return sector, I would be on Airbus A340-600. Nonetheless it was a good return flight with BA. Really like Madrid too. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Win,
nice report of 2 different airlines, albeit the same group. I've flown through MAD a few times (my first ever TR on here, no pictures unfortunately) but never visited the city. It certainly looks worth a visit!
With SK now offering a free drink in Y, the onus is on IB to start the same. Perhaps charge for more "expensive" products? I considered BA last year to MAD, from LCY, but didn't in the end. That's another option. I noticed when pricing that up that the LHR flights to MAD were all insanely expensive, £200+ for a one-way, whereas the LCY one was only £65.

Thanks! glad you liked it. Yes, Madrid was definitely worth the visit!
I agree with you that IB should offer at least a free drink and perhaps charge on 'expensive' items. 200+ GBP per sector is indeed very expensive. I did manage to get a ticket LHR-MAD-LHR for around 180GBP in Y when booked around a month before departure date.

Hello Win,
Nice short story with good pics! I’m glad you had a good flight on Iberia, the Spanish carriers aren’t too popular over here but at least you had some positive words in favor for the airline. Some years ago I had some long haul flights on IB as well to Lat Am. No complaints for me back then since I paid a bargain fare but looking back now I realize they’re still way behind the competition in terms of cabin comfort and most of all crew.
BA is nice as expected and good to see you got to sample the B763 intra Europe. Too bad you missed out on the IB A346 though. Another bonus goes for the T4 at MAD, truly a wonderful terminal and a niece piece of design and engineering.

Hi Sultanils! Thanks for your comment! It was my first time travelling with a Spanish airline and I was happy with the experience. I was also happy when seeing BA operates 767 when I booked the flight. I agree with MAD T4, it was indeed a wonderful looking terminal.

If you can remember, what seat did you have on the BA 767? Got a flight on one in myself in a coupe of months and want a seat where the window lines up with the seat - from your pics it looks like some seats don't line up all that well!

Hello James, my seat on BA flight was 4A. I am sorry, I can't remember which row doesn't have windows. Hope you have a great flight .
