Going to mainland Europe for sports! Pt. 1/2
Welcome all TR readers. This is my 1st trip report (technically my second after my failed 1st attempt on this trip ) so please be gentle. I think I‘ve sorted out the photo problem, so fingers crossed!
In December, I started to look for ski trips in Europe in February. After some looking around I found Kitzbuhel, Austria to be tempting. We (me and my family) booked a hotel in the Alps there and a MUC-LHR-KEF routing on BA 319 and FI 752. Before we booked the flights we decided to look for ways to get to Austria and we decided to do it split – me, my dad and my brother would fly on Friday to LHR, sleep there and take the early BA flight to FRA on the 767. We could book it as multicity on ba.com for around 170 GBP. We then bought tickets for Hoffenheim-FC Köln in the German Bundesliga. Meanwhile, my mom and sister would fly FI532 to MUC and we would meet there Saturday evening. We would then drive down to Kitzbuhel and spend 3 days there before going home on Thursday.
This report will cover the flights to Germany, pt. 2 will cover MUC-LHR-KEF on BA 319 and FI 752.
I came home in the afternoon and my dad picked me up for the 40 minute ride to Keflavik. We arrived at the airport 14:40, 1 hour and 20 minutes before scheduled departure time. Security didn‘t take long because it was earlier than for the N-American passengers and later than the usual CPH/LHR afternoon passengers. I grabbed a hot chocolate at Kaffitár (the Icelandic Starbucks) and went to the gate.
TF-FIX, FI sole 753, coming from London/Heathrow as FI451.
Our plane today would be TF-FIP, one of the 10 752s flying for FI in the winter (some planes such as TF-LLX are leased out in the winter).
After takeoff there were some nice views as we crossed the coastline. We then got through the clouds and saw the sun again. I‘ll just let the pictures show you.
There was some hot meals offered for Saga Class and Economy Comfort but I opted for the Y crossaint with ham & cheese as I was gonna eat at the hotel in London. Simple but tasty.
The flight went by quickly and soon we were over Scotland. As we were getting over English airspace the sun started settling in to the distance. Sunset in 3 steps:
We descended and landed at runway 27L. The taxi to the gate was relatively short and we arrived just about on-time.

We took a taxi to Hotel Renassaince, had dinner and got asleep for the early flight the next morning.
We woke up at 4.30am the next morning, had breakfast and arrived at T5 at around 5.30, hour after we woke up. I had checked-in the day before, and had chosen seat 9K for myself while my dad and brother were in seats 11K and 14K. After dropping off our luggage we proceeded through security which didn‘t take long. We then had breakfast and when it was over, the time was 6.55 and boarding had started. When getting to the gate, I saw G-BZHC sitting outside, a new reg for me.

There wasn‘t a long queue at the gate and I was inside quickly. After a warm welcome from the crew I turned left to my window seat. I was hoping that the aisle seat would remain empty but soon a man sat down in the seat aside me. Oh well, the flight wasn‘t long. At 7:25 the pilot announced that we would need to wait another 10 minutes for departure but the flying time of 1:40 would catch that time back. As we were in no hurry I wasn‘t stressed at all, but it's never fun to wait at the gate.
Rainy weather in London
At 7:34 we pushed back and taxied to rwy 27R for departure. After waiting for two BA 320s we took off ahead of an AZ 321. There were good views of T4 on climbout.
Soon after takeoff snack service was started. I had the choice of chocolate chip cookie or chips and chose the latter. Together with it I ordered a Coke. I have to admit these 0.1L cans look pretty silly. Later in the flight I ordered Coke again and got a 0.33L can. Not sure what is usually served? ?
It was cloudy all the way so no views of the ground. I took 2 pictures which show how nice the RR engines look in the sun.
Soon descent was started and we flew into the clouds. I started my video just as we broke out of the clouds and flew over the stadium of Eintracht Frankfurt. We soon touched down on 7R (now 7C). After landing we had a good view of the runway and I took some pictures of aircraft movement there.

We walked out, got our bags and were out landside in under 15 minutes. Before starting our drive to Sinsheim, we got ourselves a burger and a Coke at McDonalds, a new tradition for me after McD got away from Iceland and left us with a place called Metro Burgers. Thoughts
FI delivered good service again as in all my over 100 flights on them. BA were good, service was great but to wait at the gate isn‘t fun – but that‘s Heathrows fault, not theirs. They should serve bigger Coke cans though!
I will end on some photos from the Sinsheim Museum. For your information, the game ended like this: 1899 Hoffenheim 1-1 1.FC Köln.

Seems like you had a nice flight on Icelandair, and airline I would love to try out sometime. However, I'm just a bit curious how you managed to get the Y Comfort fare? Normally those tickets cost half a fortune, or perhaps you bought the full-fare? Would've been interesting to know what meal they served. Did Y have to pay for the croissant, or was it offered to them for free?

Thanks for sharing your report of Icelandair! You don't see Icelandair covered too much in this forum; I flew them back in 1996 from JFK-KEF-JFK ... Very nice airline if I can remember, but back then we got a free meal in Economy.

Yeah, I've always been pleased with them. Value for money.

I remember buying a Happy Meal from McD in Reykjavik and it costing at least 3 times as much as it does in London - so expensive!

Thanks! Well, there are much more slopes in Austria and the ski areas in Iceland often are closed all but 10 days a year, so Austria was fine.

Yes, it's much cheaper elsewhere in the world than it was here. Now it's gone. But we have a local place called 'Hamborgarabúllan', it's great!

Great Photos too, especially at the museum! I would have loved to have flown on a Concorde, oh well.

Yes there aren't many reports of them here. I'll show them better in my later TRs where you will get legroom, seat pics and stuff like that.

You should have catched the FI 757 that was flying for PX until last year! Maybe fly BNE-POM-SYD or something like that. Now they got rid of it for more 763s (from FI too). My dad flew to POM last year and told it was a great experience. Papua New Ginea also have one of the best resorts in Oceania with a view right over the airport! 5*, my dad stayed there while metting Air Niugini. He worked for FI back then. His route was KEF-LHR-HKG-MNL-POM-NRT-CPH-KEF on FI 752 (2x), BA 744, CX 77W, PX 763 (2x) and SK 343.
Sorry that pt 2 has taken so long, I wrote it but it didn't work, guess I have to start from scratch because I can't find the error.

Great first trip report, thanks for sharing them with us! I' ve actually flewn on TF-FIP from AMS to KEF back in 2006!
I found them to be quite average, however a lot of changes have been taken since.
Good job logging the 763 as well!
Next trip report: Well worn A330s and Hassle free MUC transfer
